hen buying a property, “To refurb or not to refurb?” is a common quandry. There is a lot to be said for a property that needs a little work; not only can you make it exactly how you like it but you usually pay a little less for it too. Be careful though, the “doer uppers” are usually popular, with our last property receiving 10 offers over the asking price – you have to be very quick and decisive. My husband and I are currently doing up our new house. It does mean that half of our house feels like a building site and that, rather than spending our evenings and weekends familiarising ourselves with the area, we are getting to know B&Q instead. It is still very fulfilling. Slowly unpacking room by room allows you to see all of the finer details come together. You get to know how you want each room to look and feel, and it finally begins to look like your home. In this turbulent property market it’s not always easy to find a place that needs work. If you do find that perfectly finished property you can still make small changes so that it feels like your own. Change fittings, light switches or add shelving and bespoke pieces of furniture. If you love a bargain as much as I do, head to a furniture auction as it’s a great opportunity to find something that needs a home. If you can’t find a house that needs rennovating, turn to furniture instead – it’s just as rewarding and less time consuming. u BlakeStanley 11-13 Broadaway Market, E8, 020 7254 7554; blakestanley.co.uk
