W
e’ve become a nation of food obsessives and ‘world food’ has become synonymous with the zeitgeist. A trip to Haggerston’s Friday night Street Feast is case in point: full-on festival vibes where the headliners are smoked ribs and a pint of mojito instead of bands. Queues stretch round the block.
Generation Pop-up likes its food fresh, fun and infused with imagination, which is why a bunch of talented amateurs are suddenly proving more popular than the fast food empires of old, while the outdoor element calls to mind the food markets of farflung places and exotic adventures in strange lands. No doubt our hunger for travel runs parallel to our newfound love of exotic foods. We’re now much more on a par with New York, and it’s finally possible to get good tacos, street food and ceviche in pretty much every part of London. There’s also the fact that food now carries the currency of cool – the whole ‘Have you tried the mock duck dumplings at HKK? They are insane,’ type thing. And naturally, a decent meal has to come with an equally decent, mixologist-sanctioned cocktail. We’ve come to expect more and better: as such, feel free to pore over our food and drink feature on the latest and best street food offerings around – and be sure to sample some before the summer is out. This is a foodie issue, so between stuffings we found time to chat with chef Bruno Loubet, mainstay of the London restaurant scene. Loubet, who was trained under Raymond Blanc and has redefined rustic French cuisine in the capital, just launched his new King’s Cross eatery, Grain Store. With so much happening in the culinary world, it’s intriguing to wonder where food might go next. Whatever comes along, we’ll do our best to bring you the scoop.

BFI Southbank is celebrating the life and career of ‘the Love Goddess’ with screenings of classic films including Gilda, Cover Girl and You’ll Never Get Rich. Hard Rock Calling OLYMPIC PARK 29 - 30 June
Kasabian have been announced as headliners for the annual rock fest, kicking off what will be the first of a series of shows at Olympic Park. The band make their appearance at the festival on the Saturday night, joined by other icons of the British music scene – Paul Weller, Miles Kane, the Cribs and the Klaxons. The Sunday is shaping up to be a US invasion, with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band headlining for a third time alongside the Black Crowes and Alabama Shakes. WHY DON’T YOU? The Wilding Festival ST GEORGE’S CHURCH 13 - 16 June
A multi-arts festival inspired by the remarkable story of suffragette Emily Wilding Davison comes to Bloomsbury this month. A hundred years ago in June, 6000 women dressed in white marched through the streets of London to pay their respects to the pioneer at St George’s Church, Bloomsbury; the young woman lost her life in a dramatic act of protest when she placed herself in the path of the King’s horse to highlight the cause of women’s suffrage. The festival will present dynamic and discursive new music, theatre, dance, visual art, collaboration, discussion and intergenerational community engagement in a spectacular and immersive setting. MACMILLAN’S MAYERLING VICTORIA PARK

On the 13 June, the Royal Opera House will be showing Macmillan’s Mayerling on the big screen in Victoria Park. A dark drama of political intrigue, twisted romance and morbid obsession, set to dramatic music by Liszt, the production was created for The Royal Ballet by one of the 20th century’s greatest choreographers and is a signature work for the Company. Once I Was An Eagle
Don’t miss this extraordinary exhibition from Romanian-born twins Gert and Uwe Tobias at the Whitechapel Gallery. The pair’s expressive and unique artistic style is heavily influenced by a fascination with European folklore mingled with the post-war communism that they grew up with when they relocated to Cologne in 1985. Working across a variety of media including woodcuts, sculptures, drawings and collage, the end result is a sinister and interesting mix of playfulness and violence. Debuting her fourth album at the tender age of 23, its hard not to be impressed by Laura Marling. Her distinctive voice and enchanting lyrics have earned her numerous awards and nominations including the Brit for Best British Female Solo Artist in 2011. This fourth offering is set to be darker than her previous efforts, a result perhaps of her maturing as an artist, but fans of her folky and gentle style will surely find what they’re looking for. Fans of Whedon will find a lot of familiar faces in this modern day rendering of one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies. Although it is obvious to their friends that they are perfect match they remain at odds with one another, constantly bickering and sparring until all around them reach the end of their patience. With new album Songs of Scarecrows on the horizon this six piece phenomenon are ones to watch. Comprised of members Henry Charles Pritchard, Matt ‘Slice’ King, Craig ‘Arge’ Brown, Nicholas ‘Peanut’ Willes, Kathryn Sian Williams and their most recent addition, Daniel Padmore on bass, the band originally formed ten years ago and have met nearly every Tuesday since then. runo Loubet is very much London’s chef of the moment, with Clerkenwell’s Bistrot de Bruno Loubet bringing normally ferocious food critics to their knees in admiration. Feted by the likes of Jay Rayner and AA Gill, the Bordeaux native’s reputation is built not on fashion, celebrity or gastronomic gimmicks, but on classic French cooking executed with masterful modern flair. Loubet, who came to London at 21 and earned his first Michelin star a few years later, trained under some of the greatest chefs of the day, including Raymond Blanc. In the years that followed, he went solo, establishing some of London’s best-loved restaurants in the process (Soho’s Bistrot Bruno and L’Odeon on Regent Street, to be precise). In 2001, he horrified his hungry fans by decamping to Australia to raise his family, but in 2009 he returned to these shores and opened his latterday bistro at the Zetter Hotel. The new venture was quickly hailed a triumph, prompting a renewed wave of adulation among the city’s culinary cognoscenti and lots of talk about what Loubet would do next. Well, now we know: June will see the opening of Grain Store, a new restaurant at the heart of the King’s Cross regeneration zone that promises to become a leading light in the area’s rejuvenated dining scene. What this means is that Loubet is busy, with more pressing things to do than, well, nattering with the press. Nonetheless we find him calm, composed and utterly congenial – a superb storyteller with an accent thick and French enough to make you hungry all by itself. We start by asking him if his interest in cooking came from his family. ‘Everybody was cooking, it was important. We used to grow everything, we had chickens and rabbits and pigeons. We used to go foraging – today it’s a big, fashionable thing but for me that was my childhood. We used to go and pick dandelions for the salad, wild leeks and mushrooms and walnuts.’ Skipping forward a decade or three, what occasioned his recent return to London from Australia? ‘Well, firstly it was my wife! She wanted to come back, she missed the family and life in London. So I said, “Okay, we’ll come back on one condition, which is that we buy a nice little place in the country, a pub or an old farm or a restaurant. At the end of the day I want a big garden, I want to grow my veg and have my pigs and chickens and live the chef’s dream.” She said “Yes, yes, yes.” Then I end up in London.’ Another big laugh, but the move was a wise one, and the Bistrot Bruno Loubet was soon established and winning plaudits from all corners of the culinary world. Loubet’s first London venture outside of the West End – does he like Clerkenwell? ‘Yeah, I love Clerkenwell. It’s a very affluent area but cool and with very nice people. I really like all the architecture, the market, the atmosphere.’ And what about Grain Store, which is set to open in the same renovated King’s Cross warehouse that contains Central St Martin’s college and the much-loved Caravan? Loubet has already told the world that he wants the menu at Grain Store to put more focus on vegetables. Is he excited that the restaurant is now a reality? ‘I’m really excited. Many years ago I wanted to do this, I thought about focusing on the vegetable to be the star of the plate. And you know, now was the right time and and it’s been a bit of a dream come true.’ Is this what Loubet sees as the future of food in the capital? Are there still boundaries left to push? ‘Obviously there is a massive movement in food to keep things moving and try new things but that’s not the business we’re in. I respect it a lot, but for me the biggest challenge at Grain Store is to make the veg, the garnish, the most important part of the dish. To make it exciting I have to use flavours and techniques from all over the

world. I want to show that eating less meat may make the food more exciting because you have to be more exciting. When the veg becomes the star, you have to scratch your head a little bit more.’ On the subject of doing things differently, we mention that we recently ran into cocktail king and proprietor of Islington’s Bar with No Name, Tony Conigliaro, the man behind the cocktail menu at both Loubet’s current ventures. Loubet lights up. ‘Yes, we’re doing a few things together! Tony is a great scientist. He does the drinks and we try to match a few things to the menu – obviously not everything, but certain dishes. You know, why not? Because it’s not really been done the proper way before, and obviously Tony is fantastic.’ Does Loubet have a favourite Conigliaro concoction? ‘I don’t drink much alcohol myself’ he laughs, before a throwaway comment that captures the man’s modesty perfectly – and perhaps the secret to his success. ‘I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I’m a boring person! I’ve never been on holiday to Africa, though I have done a charity trek up Mount Kenya, DJ’d at a festival called Lake Of Stars in Malawi and last year visited Ethiopia with Oxfam. Each trip has undoubtedly been among the best of my life for different reasons. Africa has a solid place in my heart. It’s so big and I want to explore more of it.

Vivienne Westwood, she makes clothes that make me feel like it’s the best to have a big bottom and boobs that look delicious squashed together. Her dresses are like a cheer for bodies bigger than a size 8. I also love Coco Fennell, an independent designer whose dresses have similar effect.
Still Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. Such a superbly crafted album, it’s modern r ‘n’b, hip hop at its best. Smooth, emotional and easy to wail along and nod your head hard to.

Anything that makes you understand love, like Klimt’s kiss. Or art that gives an insight into a wonderful, creative brain; there is an illustrator called Jessie Cave whose pictures make me smile, without fail, every time she posts them on Twitter.

Maybe my bed? It just reached peak comfort. We bought the frame a few years ago on Ebay when we were skint and nicknamed it ‘The Grandma’ because it’s old-skool pine and very high, compared to a trendy low bed. We then bought a memory foam mattress which everyone warned us against, but after some time it’s recently become the most comfortable thing EVER. It’s my favourite place to be.

Jesse Stevens, Creative Director of East London eyewear brand Finest Seven, tells Absolutely how to choose the perfect pair of sunnies Tell us about Finest Seven: how did the company start? Finest Seven started out of a desire to express myself personally in an eyewear collection. Designing for many different brands is fantastic but at some stage you discover designs that you love that are not necessarily right for any of your clients. The idea evolved from the concept of taking seven of the primary components that make up a pair of sunglasses and searching to find the most unique or finest examples of each. Where is the studio and why did you decide to settle in East London? Our Studio is on Fish Island – hence its name, Fish Island Design. I love East London, it’s our home. Having travelled around the world a lot, I can safely say that the East End is one of the most culturally diverse, interesting places I have visited. Tell us about the design process. The design process is difficult to standardise. There are various starting points, several ways to traverse the contents and only one final solution – the finished product. We surround ourselves with eyewear and bits of eyewear past and present. We also look at other designs, buildings, cars, fashion accessories. Design is, at best, a melting pot of life and experience distilled into a product. So tell us... how do you pick sunnies to suit your face shape? Sunnies and face shapes – there are rules and guidelines. However, there are also personal choices that go against all these rules and the wearer still looks great. Style outweighs rules. What trends are we seeing in sunglasses this year?
project – it just flowed. For full-on design work, I’ve always admired the quality of the Louis Vuitton collection and it would be amazing to do some design work for them. Who do you consult for? Currently I’m consulting for Roland Mouret, Claire Goldsmith and Alexander McQueen. Last season I did a collection for Zeiss lenses and previously I’ve worked for Victoria Beckham and Prada.
Heavy acetate sunglasses have been on-trend for some time. I think we can expect to see more of the same with a leaning towards metal and acetate combinations and full metal frames. Most of our styles are the result of a collaboration with someone we love to work with or are based on finding unique vintage components we think are marvellous. For SS13, we worked alongside our plastics manufacturer to develop acetate frames in a palette of colour pop and neon tones that are entirely exclusive to Finest Seven. Tell us about your recent collaborations... do you have any more planned? Collaborations are usually a very organic process. We wait to meet someone we like or get approached by someone that likes us. We recently worked with Felder Felder; they’re a great team and we both saw a similar solution when we first discussed the
What do you love about running your own business? When the going gets tough, how do you stay motivated and inspired? Running my own business is fullon. It is a huge challenge to me to build a robust business and to keep things interesting and growing well. When the going gets tough, the tough get going! I work harder and treat it as another creative hurdle to be overcome. My wife helps and supports me tremendously; I’m not sure I could manage without her strength. Who would you most like to style? It would be great to do bespoke work for Elton John, for example – he really loves eyewear and it makes up a part of his public persona. Finally... name your iconic eyewear celeb of all time. Hmm, my eyewear celeb of all time... We have done a lot of work around Audrey Hepburn lately, she wore some amazing sunnies. The right direction Absolutely talks to David Wellesley Wesley about inspiration, imagination and The Independent Schools Show So, tell us, what exactly made you launch the ISS? It was actually the result of chance encounter with my old school in 2006. That, and an obvious lack of information for parents when choosing the right school for their child. League tables had far too much influence and prospectuses all seemed to say the same thing. I wanted to do something which would change this. How does the ISS help potential parents make their decision? Firstly, ‘The Theatre’ provides lessons in education – we create talks which are of maximum value to parents themselves. Secondly, there’s the ‘Wise Heads’ area, which provides free, independent and impartial advice on all pedagogical matters. Finally, and probably best of all, representatives from each of the 170 exhibiting schools are there for parents to talk with face-to-face. It’s especially good for busy parents, as all your questions can
be answered under one roof in as little as a couple of hours. What was your personal experience of schooling? I started off at The Mall School in Twickenham, before moving to Ashdown House at the age of eight, and The Kings School, Canterbury at thirteen. I loved them all. Personally, I don’t think London is the best place for teenagers, so I’m a firm believer in weekly boarding at that stage. Not only does it let you fit in vast amounts to a school day, but you’re also surrounded by all of your best friends. It’s a great way to nurture a child’s interests, confidence and imagination. How has the show developed in recent years? New for 2013 is the London Schools Pavilion, a selection of leading local nursery schools and pre-preps. In fact, each year we attract a finer selection of school options. For instance, this year Winchester and Eton are coming for the first time.
What will be the next big education trend? ‘Teaching in the round’ – that is to say, teaching in smaller groups with far more student-teacher interaction. I’m also expecting to see a reduction in final exam assessments and an increase in continuous assessment, much like the GPA system in the US. And finally, what do you hope parents will take away from a day at ISS? I would hope that they’d find attractive solutions to London’s crazily competitive places. There’s a vast amount of schools on offer, each with a different curriculum and ethos. Consider alternative options – a different route isn’t necessarily a bad one. For example, two siblings may well attend completely different schools and then converge at university level. It’s worth having an open mind. How old is Yum Yum now? How do you explain its success? Yum Yum is now the grand, old age of 21, and the secret to its success is that we are are a family-run business with family values to the core. How did you the come up with Yum Yum’s glamorous decor? We travelled around, visiting our favourite restaurants, then worked with Ignite marketing and design. You also own Stoke Newington’s Japanese eatery, Oishii; is the restaurant business exhausting work? Yes! But the energy levels are very high as the team who run it have a very loyal customer base. Has the national obsession with food and global flavours helped business? It’s been very challenging. I started training in 1982 as a south Indian chef, specialising in Keralan cuisine and working on achieving the real, authentic taste, textures and flavours of that specific cuisine. Now, 31 years later, I am finding that people want the real taste and ingredients of authentic Thai street food... but I have to say, I am really excited. This widespread appreciation of food in general has contributed to our success.

Why did you decide to settle in Stoke Newington? What was the area like when you first arrived? Originally, my mum decided to set up an Indian vegetarian restaurant in Stoke Newington back in 1982; at that time every third shop in the area was boarded up and quite a lot of properties had squatters. We’ve since taken that over. Where do you get your inspiration for dishes - do you return to Thailand much? Inspiration comes from travelling; we’ve just got back from Cornwall, where we spent time at the fish markets and on fishing boats, catching the fresh produce of the day. We do really look at the ingredients available locally and marry them up with authentic Thai tastes. What kind of cuisine do you most like to eat yourselves? It’s varied. We love to cook using pulses and vegetables and last week cooked a large pot of Aloo Gobi – potato and cauliflower curry – using an amazing combination of garlic, ginger, chillies with tomato puree and onions with freshly roasted ground cumin seeds and turmeric. Pad Woon Sen Ta Ray (Glass Noodles with Mixed Seafood)
SERVES 2: INGREDIENTS: • 4 tablespoons corn or vegetable oil • 400g glass noodles • 2 teaspoons dark soy sauce • 2 teaspoons caster sugar • 2 tablespoons light soy sauce • 2-3 teaspoons pickled garlic • Few pieces of mixed seafood – clams, mussels, squid small prawns, scallops, crab meat (as per choice) • 1 dozen slices carrot • ½ dozen mushrooms • ½ dozen shallot onions • ¼ dozen scallions • ½ dozen small broccoli florets • 2 medium eggs METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Heat the wok, add the oil and heat up until medium hot. 2. Stir-fry the noodles for about 30 seconds, making sure they are well coated with the oil. 3. Add the dark soy, followed by the sugar and light soy, again making sure the noodles are well coated.
4. Add all the vegetables and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes: the larger the cuts of vegetables, the more time will be needed to cook them through. 5. Add all the mixed seafood and start stirfrying along with the soya sauce and the vegetables. 6. Crack the eggs over the noodles so they land whole, as if you were frying them for breakfast. 7. As soon asthe eggsbeginto cook, scramble them vigorously into the noodles along with thevegetablesandmixedseafood,sotheystirfry and mix well together. 8. Serve very hot.

O
ld Street’s continued evolution gathered pace with the recent launch of Rotary Bar & Diner, a temporary pop-up from the crew behind the Milk & Honey members’ clubs. For this new venture, which is open late every night until December, they’ve gone for a retro après-ski vibe, with ‘70s-style deep leather sofas, lots of wood and a mural of snowy mountains and chalets conjuring the cosy, kitschy feel of a ski lodge. The effect is warming, and even before we’ve eaten my partner and I are happily ensconced, watching a host of hip young things fill up the bar stools and window counters. As befits the lounge lizard décor, cocktails are big here. A tenner nets you a pint of whatever classic you fancy, from a mojito to a margarita. We chose the former and a Hawaiian stone sour. The menu is neatly ordered and aimed squarely at the capital’s ever-growing taste for high-end comfort food. With three categories – buns, wood grill and barbeque – broken down into chicken, beef, fish and veggie sections, there’s all manner of smoky, sticky grub on offer, and it’s tough to decide which option sounds most alluring. We eventually share a starter of sticky chicken wings, which
arrive fried in buttermilk and completely irresistible, followed by a classic Rotary beef burger and a Day Boat bun – featuring Cornish pollack, pickled fennel, spicy crab and, yes, more buttermilk. Both were set apart from London’s current glut of ‘gourmet’ burgers by their sweet, wood-smoked flavour and fluffy, buttery brioche buns. The dripping chips, too, were amazing, crunchier and tastier than any we’d eaten elsewhere. There’s no point denying it: by this point, we were full, but we scrambled together some small reserves of hunger and ordered the salted milk chocolate pudding – a whippedup, creamy dream coated with your choice of toppings. We went for smashed Oreo cookies and white chocolate crumble, and as you’d imagine, were left with no cause for regret. It was the perfect sweet treat after the meatier start to our meal, and put us in the mood for further adventures. Fortunate for us, then, that Milk & Honey itself is just downstairs, and allows non-members to reserve a table up till 11pm in the earlier part of the week. The low-lit bar’s ‘50s-style Mad Men vibe made a perfect ending to an evening lounging at The Rotary – though it’s the salted caramel pudding that will keep us coming back.
ew to Islington, Como 3 Cantina Chic lives up to its name. Both the food and the decor are superstylish, and although the concept can be a little hard to get your head around, it’s very easy to get your fork into. The menu centres on sharing plates, and with chefs from Spain and Japan, sharing dishes are in the restaurant’s culinary DNA. Sitting at the counter (which is soon to become a proper sushi counter), I take a look at the menu – and am immediately grateful that sampling a number of dishes is the order of the day. Bread by Boulangerie de Paris is a good place to start, together with a glass of Spanish wine to whet the palate. The wine list has a lot to offer, featuring over 40 regions ranged across several continents, and there’s a tipple to suit every dish. Next stop are the tradicionales, and I can’t get past the croquettes y caramelos board, a perfect starter that includes goat’s cheese and blueberry wrapped in wonton pastry. Up next is stuffed squid ikameshi, a special that proved so alluring it permanently (squid) inked itself onto the menu. And rightly so: it’s delicious. One of the defining principles of Como 3 is to include customers in the creation of the menu, a savvy move that sees popular dishes evolving and improving according to feedback. The carnivorous will love the cured Spanish meat, Japanese Wagyu beef and suckling pig, which you can order whole and which can feed groups up to eight-strong. This is a telling point, because along with the ‘share and share alike’ ethos, groups are made very welcome here. There’s a convivial atmosphere and plenty of space, with long tables for larger parties. Fun light shades and a papier mâché bull’s head have come all the way from France, and add to the lively ambience. An impressive new offering for worldly-wise London locals and visitors alike, Como 3 Cantina Chic is beyond fusion dining, a smart blend of classic dishes and ingredients put together by truly talented chefs, bringing world flavours to Islington’s food scene. 11-13 Theberton Street, N1; Como3.com

here is nothing remotely like 18 Folgate Street anywhere else in London. Its dream-like, fantasy interior was the life’s work and vision of Dennis Severs (194899), an oddball but gifted American collector, who acquired the house as a shell in 1979. Over the next 20 years he painstakingly assembled each room as a sequence of experiences or “spells” reflecting the decoration, furnishings, textures, light, sounds and even smells of different periods of the past from 1724 to 1914. Meticulously researched, many of the finishes were mocked up in the manner of stage scenery using inexpensive materials like discarded timber from the nearby Spitalfields Market to replicate panelling or chimneypieces. All is artifice. Nothing is what it seems, yet it conveys a haunting sense of the past embalmed. Marked by a bracketed Windsor lantern over the entrance door, externally there is little to distinguish the three-bay-wide house of 1724 from its neighbours, other than the unusual trellis pattern carved into the box frames of the first floor sash windows. However, on entering, the visitor is transported into an atmospheric time warp as though walking through a frame into a painting with a time and life of its own, where he becomes part of a tableau vivant , part theatre, part fantasy, part invisible performance art and part still-life drama. The visitor experiences each room in silence, absorbing the moods and ambience of each as a mute witness. Severs’s aim was to give visitors “a rare moment in which they become as lost in another time as they appear to be in their own”. Severs invented an entirely fictional silkweaving family – the Jervises – around which the experiences revolve. Half-eaten food and
half-filled wine glasses lie strewn around the rooms amongst bowls of fruit, guttered candles and pungent pomanders as if the family has just left the room as one enters. Recorded sounds of the 18th century city outside and from next-door rooms are used to startling theatrical effect to convey the impression of being a silent observer of everyday household life. Clocks chime. A canary chirps. The stairs creak and whispers can be heard just outside the door. The smoking room is artfully arranged to reflect the Hogarth picture which hangs within it: the miasma of cigars pervading the air. The drawing room is aggrandised and dressed with garlands of walnut shells (opposite below). The boudoir above is left as though the occupants have just risen, with an unmade bed and unemptied chamber pot. As one rises through the house to the top floor the scene shifts to Dickens’s London and abject poverty. Washing is hung across the staircase; the paint is peeling. Cobwebs hang in the corners. A thick layer of dust coats every surface and rags hang at the windows. For all its artifice, stagecraft and illusion, 18 Folgate Street conveys a much more compelling presentation of past London life than the rather sterile, sanitised approach of the great heritage organisations and museums. The Hotel
When we get to Calcot Manor, it is abuzz. People are arriving for a wedding in the 14th century tithe barn, 4x4s are disgorging blondes at the entrance to the hotel’s spa, small children are running around immaculate lawns in chill winter sunshine and the Gumstool pub, one of two restaurants in the hotel, is packed with visiting families and well-heeled locals in shiny wellies. This country house hotel, set in more than 220 acres of Cotswolds countryside near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, has managed that rare thing; it is all things to all people. It is both brilliantly family-friendly, with a staffed creche plus a raft of children’s activities, and the perfect hideaway for weekending, couples.
The Spa
To sit immersed, a glass of cold champagne in hand, in the bubbling outdoor hot tub whilst a well-stoked fire roars in a brazier behind you and the reddening sun sets on a cold winter’s day must be one of life’s true pleasures. Calcot Spa is hugely popular, and rightly so. It offers both an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steamroom, gym and a wealth of treatments for guests and members alike. A recent addition to the treatment menu is the Rodial skincare brand. An hour’s Sculpt Facial using Rodial’s Dragon’s Blood Serum range (£70) was not only relaxing but left my tired, windswept skin feeling really soft, smooth and rejuvenated.
The Damage

There are 35 individually designed rooms to choose from. These include ten dedicated family rooms housed in converted farm buildings which surround the courtyard, whilst the ancient Cotswold stone manor house is home to 12 bedrooms to suit couples. Our room was a so-called ‘large family suite’, although ‘house’ would be a more accurate description of our picturesque little clapboard cottage with its own garden and front door. Inside was pure luxury with a huge double bed in a large open room, plus another bedroom with bunks and an entire first floor given over to bathroom heaven. Under the eaves, two large adjacent baths faced a wall-mounted TV, and there is also a large walk-in shower. Naturally, we opted for a his ‘n’ hers bath (each filled to the brim with Aromatherapy Associates bubbles courtesy of the hote)l and wallowed in front of trash telly until we had both turned into prunes.
The Restaurant
The more formal of the two restaurants, The Conservatory, underwent an overhaul last year with a new look, new cocktail bar and a change of menu. Out went the classic ‘finedining’ and in came a more informal, eclectic menu. The chef, however, has stayed the same and, as a result, the menu is somewhat missing a distinct identity. However, our starters of risotto Milanese and beef shin were delicious and a main of marinated beef fillet was a notable highlight. Save room for starters rather than dessert – the better end of the menu. 75

LE MEURICE, PARIS Renowned as a safe haven for English aristocrats, deposed monarchs and fallen heads of state, the regal Le Meurice is Paris’s oldest palace hotel. Situated under the arches of the Rue de Rivoli and overlooking the Tuilerie Gardens, you’d be hard pushed to find a more central Parisian hotel. Here, it’s all about the degustation menu – eight courses of the very hautest of haute cuisine, think duck foie gras in hibiscus flower jelly, roast pigeon with wild garlic, and mimolette snow with comice pear flakes, all served on silver trays by discreetly attentive waiters who seemingly glide around the room. Indeed, service here is key. With over 400 staff, guests are provided with every single
luxury they could possibly desire, from dog walking to personal shopping. Back in the restaurant, Head Sommelier Estelle Touzet provides wine pairings for each of the degustation menu’s courses from the hotel’s impressive 30,000-strong cellar. Upstairs, the 160 rooms are mirages of pastel silks and Bourbon bergère chairs, complete with huge walk-in wardrobes. However, the pièce de résistance is the Belle Etoile Penthouse with its own private lift, butler’s pantry and panoramic views from its rooftop terrace – the perfect place to enjoy your Michelin-starred meal as you overlook the Eiffel Tower. a beauty and serenity rare for such a vibrant city. Designed by Spanish architect and furniture designer Patricia Urquiola, the look is contemporary chic meets cool Catalan. The 98 rooms and suites sing of elegance with white walls, stylish furniture and lashings of light. Splash out and stay in the penthouse suite with its rooftop terrace and gobsmacking views of the city. Then flop in the spaceage spa offering every treatment you could possibly want (ask for one of their signature therapies – bliss). It’s just the type of place where everything is so brilliantly done. oincidentally, both of us are originally country bumpkins – not from the same place mind you – that really would be coincidental! But apart from our origins what we truly share is our absolute love for Hackney and East London. We both moved here as young graduates and really can’t see ourselves living anywhere else now. Long gone is the negative stigma of East London and in its place is a trendy, vibrant and richly diverse place to live. The villages of Hackney and the wide open spaces of Victoria Park also strike a direct chord with us both, providing a tranquil refuge from the often loud and busy pace of urban living. For me though it’s all about watching a cricket match in London Fields on a Sunday afternoon, whereas Alex is a little more about Broadway Market and shopping, more of which to follow… Since the London Olympics were announced we have seen such huge changes to the area with parts of Hackney now unrecognisable to those who may have visited only five years ago. The regeneration of the area has led to improved transport, new developments, boutique shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. There have been some impressive projects such as Dalston Square and The Arthaus providing sleek modern accommodation for generations of demanding young professionals moving here. The re-development continues with the David Adjaye designed fashion village which is set to utilise dis-used railway arches on Morning Lane. This is one project that Alex

is particularly excited about! In fact, for those who love shopping and fashion, Hackney has become a mecca for the bargain-hunter with the presence of Burberry, Pringle and Aquascutum outlets and we hear that Gucci has bought under the arches on Morning Lane. We’re always commenting on how much we love the immense cultural diversity, which is self-evident to anyone who walks the streets here. There genuinely is something for everyone, with the numerous theatres, jazz cafés, galleries, restaurants, and range of beautiful properties. A firm favourite eatery though is definitely Lardo (an excellent name for a restaurant - perhaps too many visits and it may become an all too relevant soubriquet for us too!) with its amazing setting in a converted warehouse providing a reminder of the borough’s industrial past. For a great local restaurant, there’s Green Papaya, but Alex hates it when I give away this secret hidden gem! You may also find us after a long day in the office unwinding with a drink at the Cat and Mutton or The Cock Tavern on Mare Street with its bewildering range of ales, ciders and craft beers – a range sufficient to satisfy even the most demanding of connoisseurs.
