USE EXIT 234 FROM BOTH DIRECTIONS TO ACCESS ROADS AND BUSINESSES AT EXITS 233 & 235 • WESTBOUND ONLY EXIT
Dumont was founded in 1859 as Mill City, but changed its name in 1880 to honor Colonel John M. Dumont, a pioneer and influential mine owner. It was once an important stage coach stop known for ore stamping mills and smelting. Today, it is a quiet community with an active historical society and well-preserved school house.

The Dumont-based Mill Creek Valley Historical Society was formed to restore and preserve the Historic Dumont Schoolhouse at 150 Dumont Lane to its Philadelphia Mill Site Open Space former glory. It is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites. The society also cares for the Coburn Cabin, which sits in the school’s yard. The building was originally located in the nearby town of Lawson was forced to move during construction of I-70. Visit mcvhs.org to learn more.
PHILADELPHIA MILL SITE OPEN SPACE PARK
Two fishing platforms along Clear Creek, restrooms, parking, a picnic table and additional creek access are at this three-acre Clear Creek County Open Space property, 70 N. Spring Gulch Road. All are ADA accessible. It is off Stanley Road/County Road 312 between Exits 235 and 238. Dogs are permitted on leash.
To Downieville Dumont It is open an hour before sunrise to an hour after sunset.
