Market Day helps women in crisis

Fair day mixes fun with art SOMERS Primary School will be transformed into a magical arena of children’s activities, music, food and market stalls for the Somers Arts Fair, Sunday 25 October. A dedicated exhibition space will be filled with artworks by collectable and emerging artists who, each year, create art exclusively for the fair’s art auction. Organisers say the fair is the only event of its kind on the peninsula to combine the festivity of a fair with an exhibition and auction of rich and diverse art. It will run 10am-5pm with the art auction 2pm, at Somers Primary School, 87 Camp Hill Rd, Somers. Visitors to the 13th fair can bid to buy selected pieces, including totem poles, sculptures and paintings by award-winning artists. As well as the traditional art auction, the fair will also feature market stalls selling glass work, jewellery

and textiles, alongside activities tents, gourmet food, barista-made coffee and local wines. Children will be entertained on the main oval with rides, games, show bags and a variety of hands-on activities and workshops. A highlight will be the main stage with bands and live acts – all broadcast by RPP FM. Somers Arts Fair raises funds to improve classrooms, provide educational programs and playground equipment and maintain the grounds. It embodies the best of Somers with its relaxed and friendly family atmosphere, combined with an appreciation of the finer things of life on the peninsula. There’s a bit everything – atmosphere, art, music, food, fun and entertainment for all ages. A HASTINGS market day will help raise funds for Impact for Women, an organisation that aims to make a difference for women in crisis. Organiser Jenny Scott said around 30 stallholders would add to the event, which will have face painting for the kids and raffles throughout the day. “International fashion designer Henry Roth will assist on the afternoon, Tyabb Scouts will be cooking, plus we will be running a live auction to help raise money for the cause,” Ms Scott said. The market will be opened by Impact for Women founder Kathy Kaplan OAM. She launched the idea in May, 2006, with a group of friends. Their goal was to make a difference to women and children in crisis – specifically to Victorian women and their children living in crisis accommodations due to domestic violence. Mornington Peninsula mayor Cr Bev Colomb said the shire was committed to raising awareness and working to prevent family violence in the community. “In May the shire adopted its Prevention of Family Violence Implementation Plan which complements its endorsement of the Statement of Commitment for the Prevention of Family Violence in November last year,” she said. “As a community we support activities that promote the peninsula as a safe place and that act to eliminate violence in all of its forms. “I encourage the community to get behind this market day event to help raise funds for the work of Impact for Women within our community.” The market will run 10am-4pm, Saturday 10 October, at Hastings Community Hall, High St. Entry is by a gold coin donation.
