Bridge program goes too far - Opposition TWO bridges under the Mornington Peninsula Freeway are to be strengthened under a state government $35.8 million “stronger bridges program”. The bridges spanning Devilbend Creek and Tuerong Creek at Tuerong are two of 48 listed for work in “regional Victoria”. The state Opposition says 10 of the bridges on the list are within four kilometres of the suburban Mulgrave electorate of Premier Daniel Andrews. Mr Andrews and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan went to Traralgon to announce the funding to strengthen the bridges. The first stage of the bridge-building exercise will concentrate on 17 “priority bridges that have deteriorated to such an extent that semi-trailers and B-doubles cannot use them”. “We’re improving productivity for our freight industry and reducing costly detours. It’s good for regional Victoria and it’s good for business,” Mr Andrews said. Mr Donnellan said some bridge
work “will wipe up to 70 kilometres off the length of the route”. The Opposition sees the bridge program as an opportunity to attack the government, with Liberal party media adviser Michelle Zydower urging MPs “to proactively push it to all regional papers, TVs, radios, newsletters and social media”. “The interactive map has been very popular with journalists I have spoken to, so I would suggest sending that around to any additional media you do,” Ms Zydower stated in a letter to MPs. “Regional media would probably be interested in a photo with you at a local bridge that requires maintenance or replacement and may normally have money directed from the Country Roads and Bridges Program.” Ms Zydower attached a news release from Opposition roads spokesman Ryan Smith which could be adapted for “a local media release to make it more relevant to your papers”. A ‘vision’ assessed for Hastings A “VISION” to make High St and its laneways, the “vibrant heart” of Hastings is being assessed by Mornington Peninsula Shire and Western Port Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The vision – or long-term plan – aims to unify the street to create a local link of regional significance connecting the community to the activity
centre, civic and recreation destinations and Western Port Bay. Three design principals include providing opportunities for activities to occur which create a vibrant High St; connect the railway line to Western Port, and reinforce the character of Hastings as a coastal village.

Walking to school has active benefits A HOST of Mornington Peninsula primary schools are taking part in VicHealth’s Walk to School activities this month. The mayor Cr Bev Colomb joined pupils at Mt Martha’s Osborne Primary School on Wednesday, while Cr Antonella Celi took part in festivities on Thursday at Our Lady of Fatima Primary School, Rosebud. Walk to School’s month of activities encourages pupils to walk – or ride,
scoot or skate – to and from school throughout October. It improves health and fitness, increases social connections and confidence – and helps care of the environment by reducing car emissions. “Mornington Peninsula is pleased to once again be part of this important initiative having coordinated Walk to School activities in local primary schools for a number of years,” the mayor Cr Colomb said.
“Our Youth Services team will attend and support Walk to School activities across the whole peninsula helping students build healthy habits and work towards meeting the 60 minutes of physical activity recommended for children each day. “I would also like to congratulate parents and children that walk to school and who organise walking buses as they inspire others to get on board.”
