On Monday a celebration took place at the factory, which was attended by dignitaries including a representative from the O’Farrell Government, the President of Marrickville Chamber of Commerce and Councillor Morris Hanna.

Current ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ star Peter Everett was in attendance and was responsible for winning the company the contract.

“I came across Alpino Gelato some time ago and decided to have some of their gelato. I thought it tasted great,” he said.

“A couple of months ago, I received a phone call from someone I worked with in Australia 25 years ago who was looking for top quality gelato to import to China. The gentleman organised someone to come here and do a taste test.

“I recommended a few places, and I brought them here last. They decided to go with Alpino Gelato because it’s all natural and has delicious

Time to throw away the spin manual, we just aren’t buying it

oliticians have perfectly rehearsed lines tailor made for the media. That’s no secret.

Most politicians think that if they repeat their preferred message enough times – TV, radio and newspaper journalists will run it.

24 hour news channels, like Sky News, have been able to expose this type of simplistic and patronising method – by running media conferences in full.

The Prime Minister’s office has media spin doctors who every morning identify the issues and the stories of the day – and then deliver ‘talking points’ to MPs and Senators planning to do any interviews – this is a practice to make sure they are ‘on message’.

Th is week – a Labor politician called that tradition for what it is. Ridiculous.

On live TV he openly mocked the practice.

“I just brought the manual with me,” Mr Fitzgibbon told ‘Sunrise’, referring to the daily talking points issued to Labor MPs. “I’ll see what it says. It says I should say, ‘Polls come and go, but the only poll that matters is on election day’.”

It got worse when a poor soul, Yvette D’ath from Queensland, then delivered

the exact same line, but in a serious context.

Government MPs were making themselves look like fools.

Then another Rudd backer, Doug Cameron, came out to attack the spin doctors, suggesting those operating in the Prime Minister’s office should be sacked.

“Forget the spin, forget people telling you what you should say. Be yourself in politics,” he said.

All this talk was prompted by MORE bad opinion polls for Labor.

They immediately sent Labor MPs into a frenzy publicly and privately – like ants

in a thunderstorm.

The election is less than 100 days away.

They’re fretting over predictions 35 seats could turn blue. Maybe more.

So they’re demanding change.

But they aren’t suggesting changing the leader or the policies – just the message.

The trouble with that strategy is that the public isn’t listening.

n Monday Shadow Minister for Education and Training, Carmel Tebbutt urged the community to show unified support to celebrate the positive outcomes TAFE provides both socially and economically to NSW. Speaking at Ultimo TAFE as part of National TAFE Day, Ms Tebbutt said the campaign to support the institution has been gathering momentum since the O’Farrell Government made the fi rst round of funding cuts last year.

“Studies have found that every dollar invested in TAFE returns benefits worth $6.40 to the NSW economy. It provided opportunities for people changing careers and importantly second chance education for kids who might not have got the skills they needed fi rst time around when at school,” she said.

Ms Tebbutt said similar cut backs were introduced at Victorian campuses with dire outcomes. “ More than 2,400 TAFE workers [were] sacked and students being forced to pay tens of thousands of dollars for courses previously accessed for a modest cost,” she said.

The job losses in the Marrickville area will be equally devastating according to Ms Tebbutt.

“We’ve already seen job losses at the TAFE campuses that are in my electorate.”

“We’re losing language teachers, hospitality and IT teachers. I’m concerned that there will be job losses at the Enmore design centre. No TAFE campus has been excluded from these job cuts. The O’Farrell Government needs to use the [forthcoming] budget to provide

adequate funding for TAFE,” she said.

Rob Long from the NSW Teachers Federation and organiser for Ultimo TAFE said major cuts were felt in trades.

“We are very concerned about areas such as Enmore and Petersham TAFE, where you have trade areas like book binding and jewellery,” he said.

he wheels of progress are turning slowly in the development of pedestrian access for people with disabilities at the newly upgraded concourse at Sydenham railway station.

In April this year Marrickville Council were concerned the upgrades by Transport for NSW (TNSW) were not adequate and failed to provide acceptable pedestrian access to people who had disabilities, particularly from buses dropping passengers at Burrows Avenue

and Railway Parade.

A TNSW spokesperson said the talks were on-going and hoped to have a resolution soon.

“TNSW continues to work with Marrickville Council to understand their concerns,” the spokesperson said.

A Council spokesperson said they were contacted by TNSW about a month ago, and were informed that internal meetings regarding the issue were being conducted between representatives from various divisions. The Council spokesperson said progress was being made, however the issue remained unresolved.

push to have formal legislation to protect cyclists when they are being overtaken by vehicles is gaining momentum.

The move comes after NSW was named the most dangerous state for cyclists, with statistics over a decade showing 30 per cent of cyclist fatalities occur in NSW. State Greens MP, Jamie Parker, has given notice of a Bill to require at least one metre overtaking distance when passing cyclists.

“The Australian Road Rules are failing bicycle riders and we must act urgently to save lives. I am appealing to the

Government and Opposition to support this crucial and practical reform,” Mr Parker said.

“Th is legislation would also provide drivers with a clear, easily recognised measure when overtaking bicycle riders.”

NSW guidelines already recommend a minimum of 1 metre passing distance but there is no way currently for this guideline to be enforced.

“The existing recommendation is failing because it doesn’t have the force of the law – we must have a legally enforceable minimum passing distance to protect cyclists,” he said.

Fire bombing: Molotov cocktail thrown at vehicle Police are investigating an arson attack after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a car in Marrickville. About 8.45pm, Wednesday, June 20135, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a Subaru WRX, which was parked at the rear of a house on Bourne Street, Marrickville. The device exploded causing a small fi re which caused minor damage to the underside of the Subaru. The owner of the car heard the explosion and extinguished the fi re with a garden hose before police were contacted. Officers from Marrickville Local Area Command attended the house and established a crime scene that was examined by specialist forensic officers. ver wondered what a pet must be thinking when you see that glint in their eyes? With her love for pets Jennifer Rowlands wanted to bring that glint to the canvas.

“Whether real or imagined you can see something in there, like they have a secret [it’s as though] they have one up on us humans,” Ms Rowlands said.

She should know, having grown up with a cat, pet chooks, native doves, frogs and lizards. She has also worked as a tour guide and Tasmanian devil handler

at Trowunna Wildlife Park in Tasmania and for cruise ship the Spirit of Tasmania, showing tourists Tasmania’s unique wildlife.

She said she had a strong bond with the animals because she raised them from babies.

More recently she visited the El Caballo Blanco dancing horses in an exhibition in Tasmania.

Jennifer was so moved by the beauty of the horses, she decided to paint them and is now showcasing the works at the Red Cross Shop at 359 King Street, Newtown until June 17.

The paintings will be on sale with proceeds from the art collection going to helping people in need.

Two teenagers have been arrested following the alleged robbery of a taxi driver in Sydney’s inner-west. About 3.40am on Tuesday, June 4, three youths – two males and a female – got into a taxi on Elizabeth Street, Redfern, and asked to be taken to South Street, Marrickville. When the taxi stopped at South Street, the trio got out and allegedly refused to pay the fare. The two males then allegedly kicked and punched the 51-year-old driver before taking cash from him. The driver ran and hid a short distance away. The two males then allegedly stole cash from the taxi before driving away in it. The vehicle was spotted travelling in local streets in Stanmore and turned onto Parramatta Road where a short pursuit was initiated before the vehicle drove away. It was later found abandoned in Hawthorne Parade, Haberfield. After a search of the area, officers located and arrested two youths, aged 13 and 15, in Dover Street, Summer Hill, and took them to Newtown Police Station. Disgraceful act

On June 14, rail commuters will be able to use electronic ticketing on trains travelling on the City Circle. Those who swap to the Opal card electronic system will receive a discount of up to eight per cent compared to single ticket prices. The system will be rolled out progressively to other stations.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner said diverting the life-saving care of paramedics is a disgraceful act, which comes with serious consequences.

Mrs Skinner said on more than 150 occasions this year, the precious time of paramedics has been wasted on triple zero prank calls.

“It’s important for the community to understand that NSW Ambulance takes all triple zero calls seriously,” Mrs Skinner said.

“Paramedics have no choice but to respond to triple zero calls even if they suspect a hoax. “NSW Ambulance has the technology to track calls, so if you’re dialling triple zero to prank, NSW Police will investigate.”

Under the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995, it is an offence to improperly use emergency call services. The maximum penalty is three years’ imprisonment, with fi nes of up to $30,600.

“Prank callers may think it funny to send paramedics on a wild goose chase but there are serious consequences for diverting their emergency care.”

Drug Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Nick Bingham, said police have received a number of reports in recent months of teenagers and young adults acting recklessly after ingesting 25B-NBOMe and 25I-NBOMe, synthetic hallucinogenic substances available online and marketed as mimicking the effects of LSD. “The fact is that both illicit drugs and synthetic drugs are dangerous, and people taking these substances don’t know how they are going to be affected,” Detective Superintendent Bingham said.

“What we are seeing with 25B-NBOMe and 25I-NBOMe is that people are engaging in reckless, risky behaviour, such as running into traffic, having psychedelic crises which cause anxiety, panic attacks, acute paranoia and fear, as well as undressing due to feeling overheated.

“That’s not to mention the countless people who have experienced adverse reactions, including some who have died, after taking different illicit and synthetic drugs.”

Open Marrickville is now in its second year, and takes the form of a festival – 11 days celebrating multiculturalism through storytelling, music, dance, art, theatre, food, and simply gathering together. These activities are organised by local community groups, schools and community organisations, with support from Marrickville Council through a grants program.

Govt funding desperately sought by Addison Road Centre for upgrades

he Federal Government has allocated $4.55 million of grants that will benefit community organisations in the Inner West as part of the Building Multicultural Communities Program.

Federal Member for Grayndler Anthony Albanese encouraged community groups in the Inner West to apply for the grants.

“The Inner West is a vibrant multicultural area and the Federal Labor Government is committed to supporting our diverse multicultural communities,” Mr Albanese said.

The program consists of two streams.

The fi rst grant is for amounts for between $1,000 and $10,000 to support groups with equipment such as computers, printers photocopiers, kitchens and sporting equipment.

The second grant is for funds of up to $150,000 for capital works, including multicultural hubs, community radio stations, performance studios and meeting rooms that form part of a public building.

General Manager for the Addison Road Community Centre for the Arts, Rosanna Barbero, said the centre would be vying for the funding cuts.

Ms Barbero said one of the buildings that would need defi nite upkeep is the Gumbramorra Hall with its leaking roof, dilapidated kitchen and main video screen in the hall also in disrepair.

“The hall is used for social activities for many cultures. It is crucial for bringing people who belong to various cultural communities together in a social setting they enjoy. We will defi nitely be applying for the grants the government is releasing,” she said.

people using the centre continues to grow, repairs will need to be made in order to provide suitable facilities for the different cultural groups.

Celebrate Aboriginal culture Street Warriors take to the stage for NAIDOC in the City celebrations ulti-award winning hip-hop group Street Warriors will take centre stage at the City of Sydney’s free NAIDOC in the City event at Hyde Park North next month.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the event – part of a major opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture organised by VIBE Australia – will help launch NAIDOC Week on Monday, July 8.

“NAIDOC Week is an incredibly important recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and identity,” the Lord Mayor said.

“The city of Sydney has a strong Indigenous community and we’re proud to be working on projects such as the Eora Journey, designed to acknowledge their significant history, celebrate their culture and to promote reconciliation.

“Th is event is an open, free and fun way for people to take part in NAIDOC Week and I hope people from around Sydney join us in Hyde Park.”

Newcastle-based Street Warriors will appear on the main stage from 1pm, performing songs from their debut album, ‘Unstoppable Force’, which includes their cover of the hit song, ‘Solid Rock’ with Shannon Noll.

The brothers, Abie Wright (aka Predator) and Warrick Wright (aka Wok), will be fresh from shooting a music video in New York for their upcoming single, ‘Champion’.

“NAIDOC Week has always been important and we’ve always made sure we’re a part of community events,” Abie

said.

“NAIDOC is a celebration of our culture, and how important it is to have community input, whether it be through music or song and dance, Aboriginal people make a very important contribution to Australian society and we want to celebrate that.”

Abie was working as an Aboriginal tour guide and his brother as a youthworker, when they started performing over a decade ago as a way to inspire young people around them.

They were the fi rst Aboriginal band to perform on Triple J’s Live at the Wireless and began touring across the country.

“We saw many young people who needed more positivity in their life and we found they connected really well with hip-hop and that’s a great tool to encourage and inspire them,” Abie said.

“It was a time when hip hop was new to Australia, and there were groups like the Hilltop Hoods who were pioneers. It was an exciting time, because we were really young and getting right into it.

“Now, we feel we’re just fortunate to be at that point where we’re doing things that we’ve always wanted to do.”

VIBE Australia executive producer Gavin Jones said NAIDOC in the City was an opportunity to not only experience our oldest living culture in one of Sydney’s well known locations, but for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people to come together and celebrate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity of Sydney.

Residents told to speak up

Council encourages locals to provide feedback on amalgamation, planning

esidents are being urged by Marrickville Council to take part in current State Government community consultations.

In April this year the State Government asked the Independent Local Government Review Panel to analyse the current model of councils, all 152 of them in NSW, with a view to potentially creating 15 “super councils”.

Mayor Vic Macri said it was vital Marrickville residents actively take part in nominating whether they would support an amalgamation.

The Mayor said new planning rules should also be taken into consideration by residents interested in providing feedback on this issue.

“The new planning rules will see about 80 per cent of development proposals fast-tracked and determined in less than 25 days. Residents will be informed but not consulted about such projects, and Council will not have the power to knock them back,” he said.

The Mayor said if a merger was to go ahead, and if people wanted to complain, accountability for Marrickville residents would be lost.

“Of particular relevance to Marrickville, the Draft Metro Strategy proposes a ‘Global Sydney’ region would be overseen by a Sub-Regional Planning Board, which would not be directly accountable to the public,” he said.

Council’s challenging choice

Greens say $1 million turf upgrade would be better spent on childcare centres

$1.5 million shortfall has been discovered in Marrickville Council’s 2013-14 budget that would help fund a new childcare facility in Marrickville according to Greens Councillor Melissa Brooks.

Cr Brooks, whose Ward covers Dulwich Hill and Marrickville, said the Inner West has a low number of childcare centres and a growing waitlist of children, around 2,000.

“The Inner West is in the midst of a massive childcare boom, with a near 20 per cent increase in children aged under two-years in the last five years,” she said.

Cr Brooks said a major study undertaken by the Council called the ‘Facilities Need Study’ estimated that it would cost $2.5 million to build a new early childcare centre.

She added that the issue is that Council has allocated at least $1 million for the re-turfi ng of Arlington Oval even though it was opposed by half of the Marrickville councillors. It was passed in the draft budget with the support of the ALP and the fi nal casting vote from Mayor Vic Macri tipping it in Arlington Oval’s favour.

However Mayor Macri denies the Greens’ version of events.

“The Greens are telling bold-faced lies. If you go back three to four years ago the Greens voted to build Enmore pools over building a childcare facility. I opposed it. I will always oppose anything that goes against childcare centres,”he said.

The Greens argue that money allocated to fixing Arlington Oval would be better spent on meeting childcare demands.

Labor Cr Sam Iskandar said it’s as though the Greens want to oppose decisions for the sake of it.

“Every time the Council agrees and has

a majority vote on something, the Greens devise a tactic to combat the decision. The Arlington Oval returfi ng we agreed on, and we must fulfi l that commitment,” he

said.

On the question of developing childcare centres for Marrickville, Cr Iskandar said Labor supports increasing facilities.

Around 20,000 men are diagnosed, and 3000 men die from prostate cancer in Australia each year. But the issue of testing for prostate cancer is the subject of much ongoing debate creating confusion for many men.

So what are the recommendations for Australian men? The peak body for urological surgeons, the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand regularly reviews all the international studies and trials on prostate cancer testing, treatments and outcomes.

The world’s largest study – the European Randomised Study on Screening for Prostate Cancer - shows testing for prostate cancer reduces cancer deaths by 21%.

The Urological Society recommends that Australian men, after being advised by their doctor of the benefits and potential consequences of testing for prostate cancer, should have a first prostate cancer test at or around the age of 40, regardless of family history or symptoms. (Men with a family history are more likely to develop prostate cancer).

This recommendation is based on evidence that the earlier diagnosis of prostate cancer will reduce the risk of death from the disease. We also know that a man may have prostate cancer without revealing any symptoms of the disease.

Testing involves both a digital rectal examination and a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test, which will help stratify them into risk categories based on the test results.

The future risk of prostate cancer is closely related to a man’s PSA level; a baseline PSA level above the median for age 40 is a predictor for prostate cancer. Such testing may not only allow for the earlier detection of more curable cancers through more frequent testing, but equally will identify which men are unlikely to develop the disease, and therefore allow for less frequent testing.

Not all prostate cancers are the same – some are aggressive while others can be extremely slow-growing. It’s important to note that if cancer is diagnosed, unless it is immediately life threatening, it may not require any treatment and be monitored safely with Active Surveillance for many years without surgery or radiation.

Residents on variable home loans should receive reduced mortgage repayments this month.

Relief for home owners: Rate cuts to be passed on in June

espite no cash rate drop by the Reserve Bank of Australia this week, most borrowers with a variable rate home loan will receive some relief over the coming weeks, according to Australia’s leading fi nancial comparison website RateCity.

The majority of lenders in RateCity’s database (86 lenders or 76 per cent) dropped their standard variable rates following the last rate cut on May 7. Out of these lenders, 72 passed on the Reserve Bank’s full 0.25 percentage point rate cut.

Alex Parsons, CEO of RateCity, said

borrowers with a variable home loan will start to receive the benefits of May’s rate cuts this month.

“Last month’s rate cut by the Reserve Bank spurred most lenders to follow, by passing on the full 0.25 percentage points,” he said.

That means most borrowers would have received letters from their lenders about their rate changes and their next mortgage repayment will be lower. For a typical $300,000 mortgage, repayments will fall by about $50 per month.”

Th is is the highest level of lenders passing on full cuts in six months.

Get the vaccine or else! The media barrage that equates to emotional blackmail

G

ood parents vaccinate their babies and bad parents don’t. Or so the media reports suggest.

Firstly let me say I’m not for or against another parent getting their child immunised. Th is is a decision they must make themselves.

There are sound risk-to-benefit arguments for getting a vaccine to the life threatening diseases. I have a grandfather who just survived Polio and can tell you all about it. But not since ‘weapons of mass destruction’ has there been such one sided ‘news’. Some of the reporting makes a Coco Pops ad seem like a well-researched scientific argument. There were emotional interviews from parents of a child that died from a vaccine preventable disease.

But none from any relatives of people who have suffered serious side effects from the vaccine and yes, this does happen. The journalists have decided you need the jab and they will do whatever they need to make you have it.

There must be plenty of doctors feeling silly now, they have wasted time and money learning all about medicine prescription. All they needed to do was get a job at a newspaper and they can advise everyone what pharmaceuticals they need. They don’t even need to see your child face to face!

Each vaccine is huge stress to a child’s immature immune system. Are they healthy enough, are there any contra-

indications? Doesn’t matter just line up, No Jab No Play! We’ll even mix a heap of vaccines together in one shot so it’s more convenient.

But “it’s all for the kids”? If certain papers are so worried about the kids, what about that colour insert brochure, eight pages of alcohol ‘specials’? Go down to the emergency ward next Saturday night and see if alcohol plays any part in injuries or deaths. I wonder if there is a kid anywhere in Australia who suffers from some sort of abuse at the hands of a parent or carer under the effects of alcohol. But there’s no urgent story in the paper on banning that.

In fact, you’ll fi nd many paid advertisements to sell more of it. All for the kids? Maybe if the drunk parent got a good deal on their bottle of rum they’ll go easier on the child?

What about obesity, is that a concern for Australian kids at the moment? Try fi nding the story on outlawing junk food. Surely, somewhere between the full page colour ads for cheap two-litre bottles of soft drink or sugary cereals and fast food, surely, the paper that is so worried about our kids has a story trying to outlaw those products somewhere? I can’t fi nd it.

But I did see other brainless parrots jumping on the bandwagon saying yes it’s just bad parenting not to get your kids immunised. The inspired, critical reasoning on their view? “I got vaccinated and I’m OK!” I’m guessing that the guy

who died from it won’t be writing an answer to that opinion any time soon.

If an opinion can become law because people with the power to decide otherwise lack the spine to go against what comes down to emotional blackmail, where next?

There is scientific evidence that a higher BMI increases your chance of many illnesses and death. I’ve got it! Let’s ban the fat kids from school. We’ll make it a law! Parents are too dumb to decide things like that anyway right?

I’m wondering where all the big mouths will be when a parent is told that unfortunately their child ‘is one of the few’ who has suffered a reaction to the vaccine.

Japan stopped immunising when at least four babies died after receiving vaccinations. I bet the columns were on a different topic that week.

Where will the ‘know it alls’ be when a devastated parent asks what the hell is Guillain-Barré syndrome and why does my child have it now? Why is a parent considered a ‘conspiracy theorist hippie’ if they want some independent research done into drug safety? At the moment the drug company selling the product, does all the safety checking and reporting. That’s like asking the used car salesman if the car he’s selling is okay.

But vaccines aside, I hope this isn’t the thin edge of the wedge of laws that decide what you must do to your own child.

a profit. That’s normal. But when they intentionally sway public opinion into an actual law change, someone out there with a lot of money has to be thinking, how can they get that working in their favour?

Every parent should get involved and do real research and make a well informed choice, whatever they believe is the correct decision, as to what happens to their child.

Just hopefully they are still able to legally make that call.

She won three Emmys as Archie Bunker’s long suffering wife from 1971 – 1979. She also had roles in ‘Touched By An Angel’, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ and ‘Grace Under Fire’. Jean Stapleton was 90.

Channel Seven are set to launch a brand new entertainment and news show to combat Channel Nine’s ‘Nine News Now’. ‘The Daily Edition’ will be hosted by the loveable Sally Obermeder and will feature “the hot issues of the day with lively discussion, interviews and crosses to newsmakers around the country”. No word yet on a timeslot or airdate.

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj are the latest causalities of this year’s failed ‘American Idol’ series. The feisty pair join Randy Jackson who left the show earlier last month. There’s been no confirmation yet whether Keith Urban is staying on but it is understood the entire show will get a full revamp next year.

The always popular ‘Grand Designs’ returns to the ABC this Sunday, June 9 at 7.30pm. This season has already aired on Pay TV but is a first for free-to-air viewers.

Episode one kicks off with a fantastic

project that will see a ruined castle transformed into a home.

Lastly, there’s some chatter that Nine’s popular ‘Celebrity Apprentice Australia’ could be headed for an ‘All Stars’ version

next season. I’m not sure if I’m a fan of this idea but if they can get tough girls like Deni Hines and Roxy Jacenko on board to spice things up, that would make it very interesting. We will just have to wait and see though.

City Conversation: Live Music Is our live music scene in dire straits?

CLUB GIVES ITS SUPPORT TO PATRON IN DIFFICULT TIME M

arrickville Bowling Club is one of the area’s most popular venues, and is holding a fundraiser tonight at 7.30pm for one of their much loved patrons, Rhonda Borriero.

Sadly, Rhonda Borriero lost her husband in a motor bike accident recently.

Entertainment for the night is from a selection of music from Country, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues and Celtic.

One of the performers on the night, Dave Hibbert who will be playing with his band The Hibbert Band, said the night will be a special one for Rhonda who needs the love and support from friends and patrons alike.

“We’re hoping to help Rhonda out as she goes through a very difficult time.

There will be a lot of activity on the night and we’re hoping for a good turnout for her,” he said.

The other bands performing tonight will be Hunter and Suzy Owens band, Rob Luckey, Mark Lucas and the Dead Setters, Murphy’s Law and Finn McCool.

There are chances to win a holiday, dinners, small appliances and bottles of wine.

The main prize will be an acoustic guitar signed by this year’s Golden Guitar winner at the Tamworth Country Music Festival Troy Cassar-Daly.

So for a night of fun and dancing and to help raise funds for patron Rhonda Borriero, why not drop by?

ewtown defeated CanterburyBankstown 30-18 in last Saturday’s VB NSW Cup local derby at Belmore Sports

Sport Swimming star Sam

Seven-year-old might just be the next Geoff Huegill BASIL NAIMET

T

he Inner West may just be cheering on a swimming star of their own in years to come with seven-year-old Samuel Geha making ripples in the swimming scene.

Samuel, from Kingsgrove, competes for two clubs: Marrickville RSL Youth Swim Club and the Col Jones Swimming Centre in Tempe. Samuel’s mother said he loved the sport and didn’t need any motivation for getting up at 5.30am three days a week for training.

Samuel’s passion and dedication has translated into results. In March he took part in the State Championships in Muswellbrook and came away with a swag of medals, in a higher age group, against eight-year-olds.

“He just loves his swimming and enjoys competing. He won four medals at the State Championships,” Ms Geha said.

He won a silver in the 50 metre butterfly and a silver in the 50 metre backstroke. He was in the medley relay where he swam butterfly and freestyle legs, winning silver in both.

The young swimming star aspires to be like Geoff Huegill one day.
