A local single mother, through no fault of her own, suffered a series of unfortunate financial situations. Luckily, the Friends Foundation was there to provide scholarship funding for music education classes to her son. It wasn’t long before he was recognized as a very talented young musician.

Tragically, this young man’s mother was struck with cancer. She went through treatment only to have it reoccur. With limited resources and fighting this battle alone, the family was greatly affected. The young man’s grades suffered. Sadly, his mother lost her battle with cancer. He then lived with a series of legal guardians and later was sent away to a military academy. Through all of this his Civic Arts Ed teacher understood: music was his therapy.

His foundation of scholarships for music lessons at Civic Arts, his love of music, and the structure of the military school allowed him to excel. He was recently one of only four cadets to be chosen for the Military School Honor Band in Washington D.C. after earning a Silver Medal by scoring the second highest audition score. In the fall this young man will be going to college at the Citadel!

This summer he returned to his long-standing Civic Arts teacher for a visit and lessons to prepare for his music program at the Citadel. His teacher noted “he was a different person than when I last saw him. He was confident and articulate. His playing was outstanding!”

This is a happy ending story. Although you do not know him personally, his teacher will tell you this is an incredible accomplishment for such a young man who has been through so much. Music has been the one thread of hope in his life, has brought him immense comfort and now is the basis for his collegiate future. He has a great future ahead of him and we wish him the very best!

It’s a great story and your support helps make these stories possible.
