The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing has educated individuals at the baccalaureate level since 1950 and serves as a leader in nursing education Its partnership with Wallace State Community College’s nursing program continues to evolve as both colleges attempt to stay at the forefront of the healthcare field.

The symbiotic relationship between the two partners provides individuals incredible access to training Dr Terri Poe, Chief Nursing Officer at UAB points out that the Wallace State nursing program offers students experiences such as the Simulation Center that are rarely seen at community colleges or even at some four-year universities. Furthermore, Dr. Poe describes the opportunities awaiting Wallace State nursing students at UAB which include a healthy work environment, diversity, and 50 different units in which to work including 11 critical care units

Chief Nursing Officer, UAB:

Our relationship with Wallace State allows us transparency and the ability to share. We experience open communication, freedom to think outside of the lines, and an opportunity to be creative. This is not a rigid relationship It is a fluid, creative, brainstorming session every time we collaborate.

UAB Nursing

UAB Nursing has long been a partner with Wallace State in the more traditional sense through attending career fairs and orientations, providing Wallace State students clinicals and preceptorships, and hiring LPN and RN graduates.

More recently, UAB collaborated with Wallace State in two unique ways First, UAB launched a unique Nursing Workforce Initiative for its own employees, such as CNA’s, looking to further their career by attending Wallace State and working towards their LPN and RN licensure. They are able to do so while maintaining their full-time employee status at UAB and receiving tuition assistance.

UAB also participates in Wallace State’s Registered Apprenticeship in Nursing which allows students to be compensated for their clinicals; receive tuition assistance and an opportunity to graduate debt free; experience dedicated mentorship to prepare them for their field; and an option for full-time employment upon completion UAB’s first apprentices will be graduating soon, and the organization has added additional slots for apprentices in their second cohort due to the success they are seeing
