4 Quick Steps to Prepare for Your Baby’s Lip and Tongue Tie Evaluation

Maybe you are struggling with feeding your newborn baby, and a fellow parent, Facebook friend, or Pediatrician has told you about a lip or tongue ti e that might be at the root of your troubles. Now what? It can be an overwhelming thought that our litt le one might need a ‘procedure’, but don’t fret! In Northern Virginia, we are blessed to have many ways of getti ng help!! Here are some “basics” and quick ti ps for the best preparati on if you are looking to schedule a Lip & Tongue Tie Consultati on for your infant.

Contact a Lactation Consultant

Begin by reaching out to an IBCLC (Internati onal Board Certi fi ed Lactati on Consultant) that is experienced in caring for babies with ‘tethered oral ti ssues (TOTs)’ aka lip and/or tongue ti e. If TOTs are interfering with proper functi on, they may have some great recommendati ons for release (frenectomy) providers who have the training and experience with oral assessment. These providers have the proper tools for a thorough frenectomy procedure like a Waterlaser.

Schedule Your Consultation

You can call or text our offi ce to schedule your virtual or in-person consultati on. You will be given a link to complete all pre-appointment questi onnaires. If you complete the paperwork right away, this gives the offi ce team the best opportunity to help you with any medical or fi nancial/insurance considerati ons prior to your appointment. Pro Tip: Try to make sure that both parents/caregivers are able to att end so that everyone benefi ts from the educati on and instructi ons.

During Virtual or In-Person Consultation

The doctors will perform a detailed exam and have a conversati on about clinical oral fi ndings including anatomy of tongue, lips, buccal/ cheeks, jaw size/shape/positi on and their impact on functi on. The doctors will review current symptoms and future considerati ons. This is the best ti me to discuss the benefi ts, risks, aft ercare, any other medical concerns and opti mal ti ming for procedure with your doctors in detail. Above considerati ons are reviewed and ruled out, we are always happy to schedule procedures for babies so that we are minimizing the number of appointments for your litt le one.

Plan to Rest Post Procedure

Plan to keep your schedule clear post procedure (no travel or major acti viti es) and arrange for support at home with siblings if needed. If you have any questi ons, please reach out to the offi ce, and we will be happy to make sure you feel 100% prepared for your visits with us!
