THOMAS DOWDESWELL CHRISTOPHER DEAR MARK ELLIOTT SMITH

Three artists who are quite unique but have a commonality in the striking graphical nature of their paintings. Inspirations are drawn from very different sources but the outputs share a bold application of colour and an abstraction that demands attention. These vibrant colourful images are full of dazzling movement and are not only impossible to ignore but draw you into another worldly experience as you journey through the complexity of form and perspective.

THOMAS DOWDESWELL Futuristic, mechanical and geometric, Thomas Dowdeswell’s art reveals a sense of order out of chaos. The early twentieth-century art movements; Vorticism, Constructivism and Futurism predominantly inspire Dowdeswell’s art. He combines this with an avid interest in current affairs and how people interact with each other within our society. Ultimately his work is an illustration of his fascination with the human form. Within this latest collection of works, it is also possible to see his modern twist on famous figures in the art world such as Goya and Manet, references of which are infused within his art in a unique manner. His highly detailed and densely packed cityscapes are rich in narrative and vibrant in colour.

CHRISTOPHER DEAR Christopher Dear has been a practicing artist for over twenty years, exhibiting in galleries, music events and public spaces ain Australia, Miami, Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica and England. With a Modern futurist style his paintings radiate vibrancy and colour. Creating quadriptych canvases and mixed media works adorned with gold leaf, Chris’ canvases have reflective and illusionistic qualities. He often creates paintings that are musically synesthetic and when exhibited in tandem with professional music, of all varieties, the sounds cascade though the design and resonate in the patterns, enabling the viewer to have a multi-leveled synesthetic response. Impasto in style and vibrant in colour, his style of painting can compliment any modern space.

MARK ELLIOTT SMITH The paintings explore the realms of suggestive, enigmatic apparitions, seeing thoughts and ideas almost as patterns, interlacing to define the optimum image in new forms and shapes which symbolise their existence. Prompted by a collection of childhood drawings, which show a playful approach to the monsters of the imagination, Smith’s earlier self is revisited and explored in an ongoing reinterpretation, allied with visual resonances within the urban, contemporary scene. The large, crisp edged, intensely coloured forms emphasise a pristine flatness of the painted surface whilst gently hinting at the paradox of a three-dimentional dynamic within an essentially flat, spacial rendering. By altering and dramatising the scale of the original, often very small drawings, and representing chance actions in a controlled, deliberate way the process of painting reveals and amplifies previously hidden information, both visual and psychological, hinting at some other, perhaps meta-narrative beyond our conscious grasp. What is sought, in this interaction between the abstract and the surreal, is a combination of spontaneity and control: a chaotic precision that extracts and re-presents the lost and found on an epic scale. Likewise, the titles of the paintings, though they parallel rather than describe the work, are precise and analogous to the images as they emerge and are defined.
