At t he firs t meeting of the Coll ege Club for the second semes ter the qu es tion of more deeply entering into a constr uc tive program for t he r es t of the scholastic year was brought up. Mr. Watson, the college club president, s poke briefly on the lack of con cr ete acco mpl is hmen ts during the p~1t semes ter a nd the present unsa ti sfa'ctory state of a ffairs due most probably to the inact ivity of the club m ember s. The soda l ca lendar, which is bei ng worked on by t he faculty socia l commi ttee, was discussed . It was a g r eed that the college clu b would benefi t very lit tle from t his calendar this year because th e prese nt term is fast drawing to a close. In terest in g S ubject Deba t ed ' The forensic season opened officia lly and with a grand flouri s h of arms in t he college clu b-room last Wednesday night, F ebruary 23, when the Bergin Deba ting Soc iety defeated Dayton Univers ity in a closely contested debate. The proposition discussed, 11 Resolved that a substit1:1te for trial by jury be adopted," is one of ge'neral interest and importance, consequently its disc uss ion .proved entertaining as well as en lightening. The arguments were restricted to t hose issues of pa r a mount importan ce. They we r e comprehensively treated and etfective.J y · deli vere'd. Clas hes were fr equent and th e rebuttal s flew back and forth at a merr y pace. Authoritative arguments were decidedly in vogue. Even in the rebu ttals Blackston e a nd Bullivan were quoted with reckless profus ion. T he trouble started when Mr. Staff ord, after chiding the Affirmative on their dearth of authorities, quoted h!.mself, reminding the audience all the while t hat, w er e it convenient, he could stand t here a ll night reeiting more. A reply was not long fort.hcoming. The next Affirmative came out like a bull after a r ed flag. W ith a determined look in hi s eyes, he relirl off at an a larming rate quotation after quotation, and t hen informed his opponents that t here were tCins mor e w her e that came from. The ar g ument of incompetency \\as anothe r bone of contention . In deve loping this argument t he t eatr.s strove to outdo or "outfah1·icate" each other, the one in empPas izing the amazing s tupidity of jurors, t he other in s tressing the notorious ~>c rookedness" of judges.
