Proclamation Song

1932

by M. L. Saunders and R. Fiske

• ¡Seeking we came and were molded With the skill that a potter knows. Now some in patterns are scrolledi Some set with jewels aglow, Others inlaid with old ivory, And some painted richly in gold.

Great potter, we go from these portals Bearing your work to the world, Keeping the clear gold undarkened, The ivory's smoothness unspoiled. Brighter these jewels shall sparkle And the scroll ever deepen with age.

Athle tic Season 1 1931-32 A. LMOST before the

freshmen knew that they had really arrived at college, they had been pulled out on the hockey Field and taught the rudiments of the grand old game. The fall was unusually clear and beautiful, with the result that when the varsity swung into action, their foundation work had been wel I done . Consequen tly the season record was one that both the school and the team were proud of. A visit to the second State Tournament which was held at Harrisonbu rg was, if anything , a greater success than last year.

r\

The regular varsity season began with the game at Sweet Briar, and Westhampton managed to break their losing streak of several years, and won by the score of 3-0. It was a swiftly played game full of beautiful hockey. The following week the Farm ville game was played on home ground, and although not a particularly outstanding game, Westhampton won 2-0. The closing and one of the most exciting of games was that with Harrisonbu rg- it was between the teams that had not been previously de feated in varsity competitio n, and the Final score was 1-1 . The basket-ball season was only fair, but the school gave excellent support to those games that were played in the Roger Milhiser Gym . Although the varsity was handi capped by a lack of material, the girls who played gave the best of their support, and the Final record for games was three won and three lost. Certainly one of the most enjoyed games was that with Sweet Briar, and although Westhampton was defeated , the game was never one-sided but full of hard Fighting and clean sportsmanship. The varsity hockey record was excel Ient and there was a fair basket-ba II season, but the greatest value was that of good team work under the most able coaching of Miss Crenshaw. Better teams have been on the Field and greater athletes have starred for Westhamp ton, but the contributio n of the Centennial Year was the great one of good team work.
