Impact Beyond the Economy by Alexa Benson-Valavanis For most people it’s no longer a question of “Why Local?” but rather “Why Not?” When the quality and cost of local goods are competitive with outside providers why wouldn’t we choose to support local endeavors? Focusing resources locally yields great economic returns as well as cultural and environmental benefits. Local businesses also play a critical role in nurturing and preserving a community’s unique character. Perhaps the most common pro-local argument is the economic impact. A 2003 economic impact study in Austin, Texas by Civic Economics, concluded for every $100 spent at a chain, $13 remained in the community while $45 remained when spent with hometown businesses. Just as there are compelling economic reasons to buy the local beer or hire the local architect there are reasons to direct our charitable giving near home too. I recently heard the nonprofit sector in the United States is responsible for 11 million jobs and 5.5% of our GDP. I’d speculate that based on the number of nonprofit organizations in our area, our sector’s impact on the local economy is even higher than the national figures. Just as the benefits to supporting local businesses transcend economics, so do the benefits of directing your charitable dollars to hometown nonprofits. Local nonprofits play a significant role in social and political issues in our community as well as promoting civic engagement, enhancing overall quality of life, and preserving civic and religious values. I’ve worked in the field of philanthropy from one side of this planet to the other. The only constant I've found is that the closer community members are to creating and implementing solutions to their community’s challenges - the more effective those solutions are. Local may not be the only way to spend and give but it’s certainly a great way! So next time you buy from a family-owned shop, or community-based firm, or even give to your local charity just know you are doing a great deal more than boosting our economy. You are promoting and preserving the very things that make our community - ours. 7 9

UPGRADED LIVING LIFE IN CHICO

Beyond the Chair Premiere Beyond the Chair follows the story of Andrew Shelley, a courageous young man born with muscular dystrophy who decided at age twenty-nine that he wouldn’t let the disease slow him down. Armed with an all-terrain wheelchair, Andrew silenced critics by completing an international adventure relying solely on himself. Local film-editor extraordinaire, Alex Bridgman, helped bring that journey to film and on February 18th wowed us all with its premier at the El Rey Theater in Chico. We wish Alex, Andrew and the film's crew all the best of luck in their journey. See more at btcmovie.com

Topping trees is a bad idea! by Marc and Shuree Wesley of M&S Wesley Tree Service

Topping is cutting branches back to stubs or lateral branches not large enough to sustain the remaining branch. It is an unacceptable practice of pruning that uneducated tree care businesses sometimes recommend to clients to reduce the size or height of a tree, without explaining the damage, safety risks and true costs involved in improperly pruning trees.

Topping will cause decay in your trees:

Restoring History By Royce Peterson

You may recall that in last month’s article I embarked on the restoration of a classic mid-1800’s walnut library desk that had a number of issues. Along with a failed finish, the structure of this piece was compromised by poor decisions throughout its history. Whenever something broke or glue gave up, the default decision was to hammer a few nails in to attach an inappropriate new piece to the original. Despite a busy schedule that included construction of a dining room table, two benches and two chairs made from a deconstructed barn, I was able to completely change the destiny of this fine piece in just three weeks. As the above photo shows, this desk now sits upright with its legs set firmly supporting the body. It has been given new walnut accents and stretchers across the width of the desk made of the appropriate woods. 12

Trees are biologically equipped and can recover from small, properly placed cuts provided that the tree is healthy. But the survival mechanism that causes a tree to produce multiple shoots below each topping cut comes at great expense to the tree. These shoots develop from buds near the surface of the old branches and are anchored only in the outermost layers of the parent branches. The new shoots grow quickly and are prone to breaking, especially during windy conditions. Restoration Company 2139 Esplanade - Chico, CA (530) 894-5138 The drawers are now fully functional and the one oak face has been replaced with walnut as it should be. The old finish was removed, a light walnut stain applied and fresh water-based lacquer sprayed on to seal the stain and create luster. This desk has a new life. I expect the finish to outlive myself and its current owners and be a gift for the next generation to enjoy. With simple upkeep, several more generations will benefit from its presence. If I can assist you with repairs, restoration and perhaps the construction of your next heritage piece of furniture, feel free to drop by or call for an appointment. See you next month as I show off the dining room collection I am in the middle of making. There is a deadline looming! It will be done, it will be done, it will...

UPGRADED LIVING | MARCH 2012 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

Topping Makes Trees Ugly: Topping destroys the natural form of a tree. When trees lose their leaves in the fall, a topped tree will appear disfigured and mutilated. When the leaves are present, it will be a dense ball of foliage and lack the simple grace it could have. A topped tree will never regain its full natural form.

Topping Is Expensive Topping is a high-maintenance pruning practice, with some hidden costs, not limited to the initial cost of service. Healthy, wellmaintained trees can add 10 to 20 percent to the value of a property. Disfigured, topped trees are considered an impending expense. If the trees survive the topping, they will need to be pruned frequently, and create more clean up from storm damage. Save yourself the trouble and hire a TCIA Accredited tree care company that has Certified Arborist's & Tree Workers. An arborist can determine the type of pruning that is necessary to improve the health, appearance, and safety of your trees.

Sutherland Glass Art Gallery Written and Photographed by Aveed Khaki

(top: Bryon and his wife Charla at their new studio. above: Signature chili pepper series. below: Signature Fizzle Fruit.)

Sutherland Glass Art Gallery 853 Hazel Street - Gridley, CA 530.588.3648 SutherlandGlassArt.com 20

lass is a funny thing; as any professional glassblower or instructor will tell you: either you get the bug or you don’t. To the delight of glass art collectors across the globe, Bryon Sutherland did. As an art major at Chico State in 2010, Bryon decided to take the glassblowing class on a whim and fell madly in love. The adrenaline rush compelled him, like any other adrenaline junky, to push forward, each time looking to better the rush and the product that came from it. By the end of the semester he had the bug and it was clear there would be no way to rid himself of it. He found himself running “yart sales,” as he called them, front lawn yard sales that sold art at deeply discounted prices. It was here in Chico that Bryon also fell madly in love with his wife Charla. Natural progression took him to Orient and Flume, Chico’s legendary art glass studio, where he worked for three years honing his skillset and eventually making a name for himself in the art glass community. His work here earned him an invitation from one of the nation’s most sought after venetian glass artists, Bill Gudenrath, to work alongside him in New York. Our little pocket of northern California has a bug all its own though, and Bryon soon found himself homesick and ready to return to the area. After his first wholesale show in 2006, he and Charla garnered a loan from both Chico and Gridley to purchase a $35,000 furnace and start a new studio in an old cannery that had since been abandoned in downtown Gridley. The facility was perfect and afforded them the kind of abilities and freedoms that few artists are so

UPGRADED LIVING | MARCH 2012 | UPGRADEDLIVING.COM

lucky to have, allowing him to create art on his own schedule and having full access to whatever resources he needed to develop each piece to the caliber he is known for. The facility was so successful, in fact, that Bryon and Charla decided to open Sutherland Glass Art Gallery on November 1st, 2011 at 853 Hazel Street in downtown Gridley (former home to Serendipity Unique Gifts & Home Decor which moved across the street... and onto the next page as well). The new location was met with incredible fanfare and over one hundred people in attendance at the grand opening gala. It also quickly turned into the one-stop shop for custom glass ornaments during Christmas this past year. The gallery is about as wellrounded as you could hope for, offering options for every art collector’s budget. From wine glasses to lamps and hand-sculpted paper weights to high-end museum pieces, there is something for absolutely everyone here and simply viewing the pieces is a treat all its own. For those in search of wedding table centerpieces that truly stand out, there’s little that can compare to the creations at the gallery, and if customization is a requirement, Bryon is available to make those custom dreams a reality. Whether you’re interested in setting up a glass art registry for your wedding, stopping by to grab a signature fizzle fruit or other handsculpted piece of glass art, or simply interested in seeing something that will absolutely dazzle you, drop into the gallery when you have a few spare moments. It’s a long way from the “yart sales” Bryon was used to in college but it’s clear to see that the passion for his art remains the same.

A Gift to Gridley written and photographed by Aveed Khaki ou might recognize Kathryn Sheppard from our profile on Wondrous Women in the December issue of Upgraded Living Magazine, though her story was so inspiring that the space we had simply couldn’t contain it all and we were only able to touch on her store as the next step in her journey. The first steps into our exploration of Gridley found us on Hazel Street with Bryon Sutherland Glass Art Gallery (see previous page) and a short crosswalk away from Kathryn’s store, Serendipity Unique Gifts & Home Decor. What better reason to visit Gridley than two great reasons to visit Gridley? Opened on July 1st, 2010, Serendipity Unique Gifts & Home Decor was founded as the means for Kathryn to help a photographer friend open her own studio by splitting the rent. The store quickly gained a following though and completely

Serendipity Unique Gifts & Home Decor 860 Hazel Street - Gridley, CA (530) 846-2314

outgrew the space that was originally meant to only supplement her friend’s business. By October 15 of the next year it was time to move and it just so happened there was an interested party ready to take Kathryn’s old space over. She moved Serendipity across the street and soon opened the doors of her new 1,500 sq. ft. shop at 860 Hazel Street in Gridley. Serendipity Unique Gifts & Home Decor has something funky and quirky that’s sure to please any woman on your to-shop-for list. From gourmet foods produced locally in Butte, Yuba and Sutter counties to art and clothing, the options are absolutely endless here. Hand made goods juxtaposed against national brands set a level playing field in the shop. Whether you’re interested in larger names like MOGO, Naked Bee and Sugar Vine or more niche brands like Natural Life, Olive Tee or The Farmer’s Wife, Serendipity

seems to carry them all and carry them well. But there’s more to it than just the brands or products carried in the shop. There’s a certain nostalgic feeling you get as soon as you walk in; it feels like home. The pleasant aroma welcomes you as you enter and time seems to slow. There is no interest in rushing about and each display is designed to be a treasure trove of items that thrive on detail, just waiting for you to discover that special something that has since gone undiscovered. The staff furthers this by making you feel like long lost family as soon as you step through the doorway. There are plenty of reasons to visit Gridley, but having two that exist right across the street from each other in one of the most quaint downtown areas in northern California is something we simply can’t get over. If you’re reading this, we doubt you’ll be able to either. 21

WEDDING FILM AS PARTY FAVORS by Lisa Clark In 2002, Ricky Gutteridge began working in the wedding videography field. After a few successful years he decided to expand on what he had learned in the field and joined film school at the Academy or Art University in San Francisco. After graduating, he was invited to become part of a small team of highly trained videographers that produces a world wide television show called Andaaz for Sony Entertainment. During his time with Sony, Ricky hired countless wedding videographers to assist in producing the show. He came to realize that these videographers, much like himself, could produce video without multiple takes due to their experience in the wedding industry. He decided to experiment and see whether or not it would be possible for a group of these videographers to film an entire wedding and reception, edit it, and be able to

replicate enough copies of the film to hand out as party favors. The findings? They could. Utilizing their mobile editing studio, Ricky and his small team are about to film an entire ceremony and reception, edit it on site and print the film to 150 DVDs (or more) by the end of the night for all attending guests to take home as party favors. Ricky is the cinematographer, technical director and editor for Sony Entertainment, and the quality of the work produced for these packages is truly impeccable. He is currently offering a discount in the Chico area for his first five clients. You can contact him directly at rickygutteridge@gmail.com for more information.

Chapelle de l’artiste 3300 Inspiration Lane - Paradise, CA 530.228.0941 ChapelleDeLArtiste.com

Founded by Cliff Jacobson and Melissa Schuster, Chapelle de L’Artiste may single-handedly qualify Paradise, California as a city for destination weddings. This charming château offers an undeniably peaceful retreat from the world that exists below while providing everything you could possibly need for your wedding getaway. Chapelle de L’Artiste’s grounds are unlike any other you’ll find in the area. From the stunning lagoon pool and large spa, to the double-sided waterfall and island set atop the mini-lake stocked with beautiful koi and catfish, the water features alone conjure up breathtaking images from bayous of old. We found ourselves instantly transported to our first experience with the immaculately designed Blue Bayou at Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean theme ride. The idea of warm spring and

summer evenings set off by the fire-lit glow of lanterns mirrored in the water below provided such an atmosphere that we quite honestly couldn’t help but set this destination at the very top of our list for those looking to escape the norm. If you’re more of a land-lover, visit the retreat’s fully stocked underground wine cave with Sierra Nevada beer on-tap and a selection of wine that will pique even the most staunch of critics. With plenty of room for a small band to play, melodic notes are often shared in this cool and quiet getaway. Wondering about the frequent use of maritime termionology? Look no further than the main house for explanation. Cliff’s nine years in the navy inspired much of the décor within, such as the fourteen foot sailboat lodged in the entryway, collection of sea captain oddities throughout and

“Captain’s Quarters” master-suite. Beyond the main house lies a quaint chapel, an artist’s barn and the popular Pavilion where all meals are served. Finally the gatehouse, a staple unto itself, has sat guard over the property for over one hundred years. Featuring a private wrap-around porch, furnished with table, chairs and glider, this location provides unbelievable views of nature unfolding below. Pitched by many as Paradise’s only bed & breakfast, the Chapelle de L’Artiste is simply so much more. With the ability to cater to your every waking whim and desire, the owners of Chapelle de L’Artiste custom tailor all-inclusive packages for any wedding they can accommodate. A true credit to the city of Paradise, the Chapelle de L’Artiste is quickly helping the city exemplify all that its name implies. 31

Jimmy Jacks Rib Shack Address : 305 Main Street, Chico, CA 95928 Phone: 530.893.1903 Website : www.jimmyjackschico.com About to celebrate its first month in business on the corner of East 3rd and Main Streets, Jimmy Jack’s Rib Shack is an inviting locale for down-home cooking right here in downtown Chico. Open from 11am to 11pm seven days a week, this new country hangout is doubling down on a pocket full of secrets. From the sauce to the prep, everything here is a closely guarded secret brought over from their sister bar in New Zealand, and try as we did to coax those secrets out, we came away completely unsuccessful! What we did gather was that time is the one ingredient too obvious to miss. The ribs take a day and a half to prepare, six hours for the pulled pork, and nearly nine hours for the brisket! And we thought making croutons at home was time consuming, sheesh! Their signature catfish is cornmeal breaded and served with deep fried pickles and a spicy remoulade sauce. The specials here change daily, so get over to their facebook page and discover them for yourself! Whether you’re in search of falloff-the-bone ribs, quality hand-shaken drinks with an emphasis on the classics, specialty cocktails, or simply want to revel in the news clippings from bygone eras, Jimmy Jack’s has something for everyone. For those looking to get married in the near future, the folks behind Jimmy Jack’s have been catering events for over ten years. Stop on by and see what this new corner of downtown Chico has to offer for yourself! You’ll be glad you did. 48

Most notably, the location was caught up in the fire that destroyed the corner of First and Broadway Streets downtown back in December of 2009. Though frustrating, the fire didn’t keep Tassa or her dreams of succeeding as a restaurateur down for long; she had her sandwich shop completely rebuilt and was back up and running within eight months of the fire. A complete unknown in the Chico food industry, Tassa’s original interest was to open a retail store downtown, but stumbled upon the opportunity to open a small franchise restaurant at one of Chico’s most sought after and trafficked locations directly across from Chico State. A longtime lover of the energetic vibe brought to Chico by our student population and the fun atmosphere provided by downtown, Tassa jumped at the chance to open her restaurant at 215 West 1st Street and has been there ever since. Just over a month ago, Tassa took an opportunity to expand her creative palette and re-brand her business with the freedom she was originally looking for. She renamed her restaurant, doing away

with the security of franchise branding, and decided that a new name should also come with a new look. The result? A completely revamped design inside and a new menu filled with gourmet quality sandwiches at prices competitive with the rest of the downtown landscape. Perhaps best of all, Marcelli’s focuses on the word “fresh” above all others, which these days seems to be an increasingly difficult focus to find. From the bread baked in-house daily to the homemade specialty sauces, and the premium meats to the made-toorder salads, there is simply nothing about Marcelli’s that doesn’t scream, “FRESH!” Their party and luncheon catering options are no different and Tassa guarantees the same level of freshness at your get-together as she does in the restaurant. Favorites on the new menu include the Hot Italian Meatball sandwich, and our personal favorite, the Reuben, which is simply out of this world. Tassa is looking forward to expanding the menu to include new panini options and items to help get past that brick wall we all experience on our way to work in the mornings. Her restaurant prides itself on cleanliness and customer service, and it’s no surprise why it is quickly becoming one of our favorite hangouts in downtown Chico.

UPGRADED YOU

Hello movers As we continue our nose-to-toes exploration of the body, this month I will discuss neck posture. For all of you involved in weddings this season, now is a great time to start paying attention to your posture! Not only will you be capable of breathing more deeply, you will begin distancing yourself from 2/3 of the population that will have some form of neck pain in their lifetime(1). When it comes time for those wedding pictures that we all look forward to, few things pull down the beauty of a group picture more than a row of young ladies and gentlemen dressed to the nines, slumped over at the shoulders, captured in film for all time. Stand up tall, pull your shoulders back, and be proud to be a part of the wedding party! Here are a few situations in which we are most likely to roll our shoulders forward and “stick our neck out”: -When texting on our tiny text smart phone -When driving with our seat in the “low rider” position -When typing on the computer -When crossing our arms in conversation

Any of these sound familiar? Are you sitting up tall yet? Take this moment to label situations in your life in which you might find yourself in these postures. Sticky notes, dry erase reminders on your mirror, and for all you Mac users-- apps such as PostureTrack can be great tools to help you sit up tall and begin to correct your neck posture. While you are at it, take a deep breath and smile. Until then, Move with Intention.

with Michael Burke

I love to dance and want to dance the night away at my wedding! How can I keep my makeup from “melting” off and keep my skin looking shine-free for pictures? Dear Michael:

1. Control oil: Skip moisturizer (if skin tends to be oily) or switch to a lighter, oil free lotion that contains SPF of at least 30. Oil controlling moisturizer, makeup primer, and foundations with added powders can also help absorb oils and shine. Two of my favorites are Mac-studio tech foundation and Prep & Prime loose powder. I don’t leave for a photo shoot or wedding without these two great products. These two products have a beautiful finish and wear until you take them off. 2. Apply powder, lightly: dust loose

powder, first. This will set your foundation. Pressed powder is for touch-ups throughout your day. Dust loose powder with a powder brush from hairline to jawline for a smooth finish. If you are touching up with your pressed powder, a sponge absorbs the oil as well as leaves a smooth finish. A great way to help keep a nice smooth finish is to use a powder blush. Although cream blush is beautiful, it doesn’t lend itself to a long wear. My secret weapon for blush is Nars-“Orgasm”. It is the most beautiful color. It’s great on all skin tones.

3. Prep eyes and lips: eye shadow primer is a great help when it comes to your eye shadow staying in place. Try “Make up forever” eye shadow base. Apply over entire eyelid (brow bone to lash line) then follow with loose powder. Lips are very simple. You want your lips to be moisturized; you also want to use an SPF of at least 15. My favorite lip moisturizer is Nivea “kiss of moisture”. 4. Mascara should be waterproof. My all time favorite is Maybelline “Turbo” in black. It’s a fantastic price, and gives you the most beautifully lacquered eyelashes. 5. Be prepared: touch-ups are a must. As skin oils mix with your makeup, shades tend to darken. Keep a small bag with pressed powder, a sponge and of course your lipstick.

Congratulations and best of luck on your big day!

Get Confident! By Dr. John Nelsen, DDS

aul Ekman, professor of psychology at the University of California Medical School in San Francisco and arguably the most notable name in the field of facial expression research recently explained the importance of a single smile in Psychology Today magazine. According to Ekman, human beings respond to a smile as far as 30 meters away. A genuinely warm smile lets us know that we’re likely to get a positive reception by the person pointing that smile our way and it goes without saying that a genuine smile is undoubtedly difficult to resist returning. This interpretation of a potentially positive reception can completely alter how we interact with that person and dictate which direction the meeting will take. Most will agree that a person’s smile is one of their greatest assets and research shows that it is often the first feature people take notice of during a first impression. Not only do others take notice of the teeth that comprise our smile, but it turns out we critique them ourselves day-in and day-out. Our teeth, and the smile they create, play a large role in how open we are to interacting with others and are often regarded as the main center of confidence when conversing with those around us. Our patients say it best when they stop by to explain

how much easier it was to approach that certain somebody, be confident during the interview that earned them their new job, or speak without fear in front of a group of their coworkers. Thankfully, your smile is also one of the most affordable features to improve. Results are often seen in as little as one week with treatment that can be completed in the comfort of your own home while watching your favorite TV shows each night, surfing the Internet, or better yet, diving into the newest issue of Upgraded Living. The most common form of teeth whitening is completed through bleaching and is a simple noninvasive procedure that changes the color of your natural tooth enamel. It can remedy staining from excessive fluoridation during childhood tooth development, normal wear of the outer tooth layer, staining due to medications like tetracycline or staining caused by habits that we simply can’t seem to kick. Whatever the reason may be, a simple whitening procedure can make all the difference in your smile and add that extra bit of confidence that’ll put your interactions over the top. Stop in today and take the first step toward a more confident tomorrow.

Magnolia Gift & Garden by Aveed Khaki

Opened by Chris Hunter and Courtney Paulson in December of 2008, Magnolia Gift and Garden has quickly made a name for itself as Chico’s favorite, and arguably friendliest, nursery. With over fifty years of combined experience and a core staff that have each worked on the property for eight to ten years, this youthful nursery brings as much knowledge and experience to the table as it does fun. Since its inception, Magnolia Gift and Garden has grown considerably. Acting upon encouragement and advice from customers, the space has evolved from a landscaper and professional driven nursery into a mecca for greenthumbed homeowners, hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers alike. Providing products from vendors with the absolute highest in quality standards, Chris and Courtney have ensured that their customers get the

very best in both service and items for their gardens. Perhaps best of all, Chris and Courtney choose to support growers who use rich soils, high in organic material, nutrients and beneficial biota; growers who refuse to sell diseased, undernourished or undersized plants, or those which have not yet developed a mature root system. The result? Quality plants whose lifespan you won’t have to second guess! The inventory here is guaranteed to be in season, each and every season. You won’t find a single stretch of frost cloth on the nursery grounds and every item purchased can be planted the day you purchase it. The plants are also carefully selected to also ensure drought-tolerance, something that this year has proven is of utmost importance in our region. A quick discussion with anyone on staff or a short walk around the nursery will prove Chris and Courtney’s obsession with creating a happy, relaxing and fun environment for friends and soon-to-be friends to enjoy. From the school bus to

the newly installed “Lofty” modern space by Eric Enns, Magnolia has something fun for everyone young and old alike. It’s this same fun atmosphere that is echoed in their educational programs that help bridge the gap to the younger generation that historically hasn’t been as involved in gardening. It seems as if every time we visit, there’s something new to see and experience, and this year should be no exception to the rule. On the heels of the benefit concert by the Yule Logs at their nursery last year, Chris and Courtney have decided to host four or five new events in 2012, furthering the positioning of their location as an up-and-coming entertainment venue in the Chico area. Whether you’re looking for imported Asian pottery, fruit trees, quality plants, unique products grown from partnerships with local businesses or advice on creatively managing your outdoor space, the folks at Magnolia Gift and Garden are here to help. Stop by today and see why we can’t get enough of these guys.

IS ASSISTED LIVING THE RIGHT CHOICE? When we consider moving a family member to an assisted living community, the benefits are not always immediately crystal clear. Though we know it will allow our loved one to be safe and social, there are some benefits that will become apparent to the resident and his or her family only after living in a community for several months. Family Roles Restored Assisted living communities allow us to advocate for our parents while trusting the staff to do the rest, which provides the very powerful benefit of restoring the family roles. A spouse who has been acting as a caregiver to her husband, can get back to being a wife. A daughter who has neglected the needs of her own children to care for her failing parents is able to resume the role of mother and daughter once again. Improved Health On-site nurses and emergency services, regular nutritious meals, exercise sessions and even seminars on healthful habits help promote healthy living in a variety of ways. Sense of Community Assisted living can bring a sense of community into an individual's life. Residents are surrounded by members of

Connecting with others who may be dealing with some of the same health or psychological issues can also aid in a resident's general happiness. Almond Blossom Senior Care: Assisting Your Search As you search for an assisted living community, be prepared to ask each provider how it might accommodate your needs, and any changes in your needs over time. Most of all, if you are seeking a community for someone who cannot visit personally, it’s important to respect their needs and wishes by including them in the process as much as possible. The spring wedding season

is quickly approaching and who doesn’t dream of looking great in a wedding dress or that summer bathing suit? On a daily basis at our office, Chico Spine & Wellness, people are able to look their best by shedding inches off their waistline and pounds off their body. The first place to start this journey is by knowing where you stand. How much lean mass do you have? How much body fat do you have? What are realistic and healthy weight loss goals for you? A highly accurate and easy way to measure and monitor these weight loss parameters throughout your journey is called Body Composition Analysis (BCA). Measuring your BCA is as simple as grabbing onto a handheld BCA unit and waiting for the computer to do its thing. After about 30 seconds we can get a gauge on what you weigh, how much of your body composition is fat versus lean mass, and how much fat you have to lose. At Chico Spine & Wellness, we utilize a web-based module to accompany our BCA unit which conveniently tracks and records each patient’s progress. This allows our patients to regularly check their BCA numbers from home, share with friends for support, and be encouraged about achieving their weight loss goals. Looking thin and trim this wedding season is really quite simple. It takes a quality assessment of where you are at to begin, a simple diet plan to follow, and knowledgeable support from a physician throughout your weight-loss journey. If looking and feeling your best “fits” into your goals for the spring and summer wedding season, then call us at Chico Spine & Wellness. We provide Life Changing Care through exceptional chiropractic care, massage therapy, and physician directed weight loss.

So Who are the Soroptimists? by Aveed Khaki nless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve undoubtedly seen the name “Soroptimists” on signage and event advertising or heard it echoed throughout the streets of Chico. Yet, for all of the work these women do to support our local community, it seems that there are few people who truly know about them or the work that they carry out each year. “Soroptimist” literally means, “best

for women” and these wonderful business women take that message to heart each and every day, striving to be the best they can be and helping other girls and women do the same. This international organization spans over 120 countries and is home to some 95,000+ members, each contributing time and financial support to community-based and international projects that make the lives of the women around them better in some way. Locally, our first Soroptimist chapter was founded in 1930 and has, for over 82 years,

Emma A. Wilson

Hester Grimm Patrick

Charter President

On January 10, 1930, at a dinner attended by local and visiting dignitaries, the Chico Soroptimist officers were installed. President Emma Wilson then accepted the Chico club’s charter. Remembered by Hester Grimm Patrick as a strict disciplinarian with a “terrific sense of humor” who was rarely seen without her big dog. Emma was one of Chico’s

Last Charter Member first educators. She came to Chico’s Normal School in 1895 as a teacher and went on to become principal of the Chico Normal Training School (elementary school). In 1926, she became the registrar for the Chico State Teachers College and held that position until she retired at the age of 86. In 1993, a local elementary school was named in her honor.

Laura joined the Chico Soroptomists in November of 1994 and has enjoyed the community service and camaraderie immensely. Hester Grimm Patrick was the youngest of all the members attending the inaugural meeting of the Chico Soroptimist Club. She was then Chief Clerk for California Water Service and due to this age difference, it was difficult for her to break with social etiquette and address the other club members by their first names—a club rule enforced with a fine. However, Hester’s age

didn’t keep her from being elected president of the Chico club just six years later. This early involvement in Soroptimist later shaped the club’s 50th Anniversary Project: converting the former Carnegie Library building into the Chico Museum. Her bequest of her home and grounds, the Patrick Ranch, to the Chico Museum Association fulfilled her desire to keep history alive in Chico.

Jeanne Rawlings Producer Writer

Jeanne joined the Chico Soroptomists in 2008. A personal goal to progressively be a better person and make a difference in the lives of those around her, she found that being around people who did

so on a weekly basis was a sure way to reach her goal. As a Soroptomist, she is deliberately choosing to give something back to her local community, and furthermore, women and their families around the globe!

The Power of Compounding Financial advice from Renée Michel, MBA Financial Advisor at Asset Management Group Jenny and David are two hypothetical investors with the same goal – saving for retirement. Both receive an average 7% annual return and will retire at the end of 2011. However, Jenny got started earlier than David. Jenny started investing $5,000 in an IRA every year beginning on December

David was a procrastinator and put off investing until 10 years before retirement, December 31, 2001. He made sure to invest $5,000 annually until he retired. here are not many animals that can inspire such utter terror and sheer awe as the tiger. Whether your experience is with tigers in their native land or closer to home where it is much safer to see them at the local zoo, Las Vegas, or even your own television, there generally seems to be some strongly mesmerizing force that draws everyone to just stare and admire the beauty of such powerful creatures. The Barry R. Kirshner Wildlife Foundation has five tigers living at its sanctuary – all five of the tigers that reside in Butte County. The Bengal tigress featured here mesmerizes us with the novelty of feline beauty mixed with a paleness that is normally associated mostly with polar bears and albinos. Her name is “Chuffy” and she has us under her spell. In truth, Chuffy is not an albino; she is the result of inheriting a recessive gene from her parents that causes less pigmentation in her coat than her more orange relatives. Along with that recessive gene come a few birth defects and health problems that require serious care. When the Kirshner Foundation received Chuffy from a private facility in 1998, she was between 12 and 14 weeks old. Her birth defects, including kidney, liver and skin problems made her a target for euthanization. But Chuffy tugged hard

at the Kirshner Foundation’s heartstrings and was welcomed into their family where they are able to give her a high quality of life and the best medical care possible. Today, Chuffy is 14 years old and weighs about 480 pounds. She eats about 10-18 pounds of food each day. Sponsorship for her care hovers at $1,000 each year. With less than 5,000 Bengal tigers worldwide and only a few hundred white tigers in existence, Chuffy’s relatives are all on the critically endangered species list. She joins her tiger friend, Nyla, as an ambassador to show people how beautiful and intelligent these big cats reveal themselves to be – they are even able to mind a leash and use a litter box! During the month of July, the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation reaches out to the youth by hosting a summer camp with three different sessions for various age groups. Kids have the opportunity to learn about the wild animals on the Kirshner Sanctuary and see how to be good stewards of the animals and those natural habitats that remain in the dwindling wilderness of the world. If you (or any children you know) want to learn about animal management and actively conserving the environment, try visiting the Kirshner Wildlife Foundation. They will teach you some interesting facts about tigers and you’ll get to meet Chuffy.
