Introduction


A Message from His Excellency: | Prof. Abdullah M. Al Rubaish, President of University of Dammam Nearly Five years ago, in the month of Ramadan 1430H/ September 2009G, the University of Dammam “UOD” became a fully independent University after being a branch from King Faisal University since 1395H/1975G. The UOD carries an academic and research legacy spans over almost four decades where some of its early colleges received their first students in Since the OD has gone through drastic demographic and geographical changes ts si e increased to a number of colleges and ma ors The number of its affiliates increased to 41705 students, 2067 faculty members and 4917 employees. The University branches extended to cover the City of Dammam and six other Mohafa ahat along the Eastern Pro ince atif Al ubail aryah Olyah oayriyah Kha i and Hafrubatin). On 2/6/1435H (2/4/2014G) a Royal Decree separated four branches from the UOD (Qaryah Olyah, oayriyah Kha i and afrubatin to form a new ni ersity named afr Al atin ni ersity Recently OD has Colleges speciali ed disciplines students faculty members and staffs Since its foundation, the UOD is determined to update its curricula and develop new ones, to provide academic en ironment that promotes arious areas of nowledge and science and to conduct scientific research directed to and associated with the problems of the environment and society. The UOD has managed to accomplish a great deal of development in physical infrastructure as well as in existing and new programs. The UOD does its best to o ercome all types of difficulties and obstacles The ni ersity is eager to achie e more successes and draw its pace toward global leadership, bearing in mind challenges which confront institutions of higher education. The University is looking forward to participating in achieving national goals through national and sector development strategies represented in the 10th National Development Plan, the Higher Education Plan “Afaq” and the National Strategy for the Transformation to Knowledge Society and Knowledge-based Economy. These strategies are thrusts to prepare the UOD alumni to meet the requirements of knowledge society and to participate in building the knowledge-based economy. Our graduates are prepared to have higher capabilities to make use of the experience accumulated through proper management of Knowledge and through being prime source of knowledge required to support growth and development.

Since education is located in the heart of the economy of knowledge, because it is based on the platform of research, innovation and learning, the UOD pays considerable attention to building the skills of students by focusing on improving their performance. The UOD applies output quality-based education systems which center on the student and support his basic skills, especially the skills of project management, digital technologies, problem-solving, critical thinking, and integrating learning with knowledge. These skills increase the opportunities of UOD Graduates to be employed in the labor market. The UOD has also promoted the use of communication and information technologies in education and taken the advantage of high quality open-source education systems. The University insures the provision of high-standard study programs by encouraging innovative teaching, intensifying quality assessment and assurance of programs and building systems of internal and external quality. Furthermore, the UOD moves to strengthen its role in the area of research as an engine of innovation and growth. As such, UOD’s research focuses on projects, which contribute to solving local, regional and global problems; achieve community partnership; promote excellence and innovation in research quality, contribute positively in the national research priorities, observe the rights of intellectual ownership, and adhere to traditions and standards of scientific ethical research The OD is careful to establish appropriate en ironment for research excellence and to encourage conducting joint research within the University with other local or global institutions. With the permission of Allah the Almighty, the University of Dammam, with various roles will do its best to provide the righteous graduates with good citi enship and effecti e participation in the achie ement of de elopment of sustainable and prosperous society in the nation and the world at large. As I introduce this brief manual about UOD achievements to our valued readers, I pray to Allah to bless those who participate in and assist the ni ersity of Dammam to fulfil its role positi ely as one of the institutional actors charged with shaping the future of this nation and building its civilization and prosperity.

The University of Dammam opened its doors to women and men in 1975 with two pioneering colleges: the College of Medicine and the College of Architecture. Almost four decades later this academic institution has grown into a leading research university with 21 colleges spread throughout the Eastern Province and a student population of over 45,000. As a preeminent research-based institution, the University of Dammam continues to grow and develop, continually assessing and improving its curricula and expanding its academic capabilities in all disciplines, while at the same time engaging the public in addressing environmental and community challenges. This book, The University of Dammam: At a Glance, provides just that, a glance at one of the largest and inspiring universities in the Kingdom.

College of Architecture and Planning | The College of Architecture and Planning was opened in 1395-1975 in King Faisal University (now the University of Dammam) in the city of Dammam as a cornerstone in the Architecture, Planning and Built Environment Education in Saudi Arabia The Faculty has fi e departments granting achelor s degrees in Architecture Urban and Regional Planning, Building Engineering, Landscape Architecture, and Interior Architecture. Since its inception the College played an important role in building generations of ualified personnel capable of contributing to advancing progress in contemporary history of Saudi Arabia. The College managed through the last three decades to graduate more than 2000 Saudi Engineers (1,600 males and 400 females) in addition to 180 engineers from other nationalities. The College offers Master s degree in the disciplines of Architecture rban and Regional Planning uilding Engineering and Landscape Architecture. Besides, the College grants a PhD Degree in Urban and Regional Planning. So far, over 200 students have been graduated from these programs. Since the beginning of the academic year of 1426/1427H ( 2005/2006G), the College has developed a program of grants PhD Degree in Urban and Regional Planning. Environmental Engineering Department : Environmental Engineering concentrates on the application of the fundamentals of science and engineering towards the improvement of the environment (air, water and earth resources) for the provision of potable and palatable water, clean air and land and for treatment of polluted areas. College of Sciences | The College of Sciences at the ni ersity of Dammam was the first ni ersity in the Eastern Pro ince to offer bachelor degree programs in the sciences for women The College was founded in 1399 AH/1979 CE and four years later, 112 students graduated from the College of Sciences. Since that time, the College has steadily grown with over 216 faculty members and over 3,100 graduates. In 1983 postgraduate programs for teaching assistants and lecturers from within and outside the college were set up and in 2004, master and PhD programs were implemented. Several of the College’s faculty members have received prestigious academic awards of excellence in scientific research such as the Almarai Award for Science nno ation the Scopus World Award and the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology Award (KACST). In addition, the College has received the Prince Mohammed bin Fahd Award for Government Excellence during its third session in the Standards of Organization and Procedures. The College is currently involved in the accreditation process under the auspices of The National Commission for Academic Accreditation and Assessment (NCAAA). The Deanship of Library Affairs The Office of the Dean of Library Affairs was first established at King Faisal ni ersity in A CE and in it became part of the ni ersity of Dammam The Office of the Dean of Library Affairs at the ni ersity of Dammam is responsible for all libraries found throughout the many campuses of the ni ersity of Dammam including the original central library which was founded almost four decades ago on the main campus the library at King Fahd ospital the College of Medicine Library the Central Library for omen and the libraries of the colleges in atif ubail airiyah Kha i and afr Al atin The staff of the ni ersity of Dammam s libraries is engaged in pro iding a wide range of ser ices to the academic community These ser ices include the careful and informed selection of rele ant learning resources and the implementation of a streamlined organi ation and retrie al system for both print and electronic resources that cater to the academic community s re uirements for information nowledge and research The D Libraries ser ices extend beyond the ni ersity community through numerous outreach acti ities

ni eristy Counseling Center The ni ersity Counseling Center at the ni ersity of Dammam was established in an effort to offer comprehensi e counseling ser ices for our students The Center promotes the intellectual emotional and physical de elopment of all students The Center pro ides counseling in se eral areas including academic educational psychological and social There are plans to expand our ser ices to include uni ersity employees and their families and community members in the framewor of an integrated Center that promotes scientific excellence for students and sponsors creati e talents Since its inception the ni ersity Counseling Center has been an acti e member in the region as well as in international institutions concerned with guidance Our Center has adopted the criteria and standards of the nternational Association of Counseling Ser ices ACS and the ational Commission for Academic Assessment and Accreditation CAAA All the ser ices we pro ide are guided by the ethics code of the counseling profession

Center for Scientific Publications Scientific publications are one of the pillars of academia as well as being the tributaries of scientific research Scientific publications also play a ey role in the academic accreditation process in all uni ersities These were contributing factors for establishing the Center for Scientific Publications at the ni ersity of Dammam The Center of Scientific Publications is under the authority of the ice Rector for raduate Studies and Scientific Research The Center is responsible for printing and publishing any scientific wor recommended for publication by the Scientific Council after they ha e re iewed it according to the terms of the Scientific Council

Documents Center The ni ersity of Dammam has wor ed on establishing the Documents Center with the aim of preser ing all types of documents from the ni ersity itself the Eastern Pro ince and other documents related to the country s heritage The Center will also wor on organi ing and preser ing all documents generated by the ni ersity as well as adopting successful ways that will ensure the safety and confidentiality of the content The Center will wor hand in hand with the ational Center for Documents and Archi es and other documentation centers at different uni ersities to reco er process photocopy and preser e all types of documents and archi es related to our country and nation as we ma e them a ailable for researchers and those who are willing to pursue nowledge and research according to the enforced regulations instructions and rules
