Researchers explore sp i l l e f f e cts
oil
In the wake of the April 20 Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion, UNCW researchers immediately began to monitor, measure and mitigate the impact of the huge oil spill through collaborative efforts with other universities and emergency response teams. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and other federal agencies called on research-strong universities to provide the scientific expertise, equipment and baseline data needed to recover and protect as much wildlife and human habitat as possible. Because of its longstanding history of research in Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean waters, UNCW had a team of technologically savvy researchers with long-term data sets and access to advanced oceanic equipment, ready to spring into action.
