As in sudoku, each vertical and horizontal column is to have the numbers 1-4 appear only once. Within each bold area, aside from the ones with the number already listed, use the small number at the top with its symbol as directions. For example, in a two block bold area with the directions 1-, you must list two numbers, that when subtracted equals one. If the directions state 2+, your answer would be 1 and 1. The same number may appear more than once within a bold area, as long as it’s not repeated in the columns.

Labor Day is a Federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September, and it celebrates the accomplishments of American workers, both past and present. The efforts of these workers have helped to form the United States of America as we know it today. The holiday is a day of rest, family gathering time, and the last day of summer to many. All schools are closed on this day, as well as all Federal and state offices, banks and many private businesses. In June of 1894, Congress officially made the holiday the first Monday of September. The origin of Labor Day is not completely clear. There are many theories regarding who first celebrated the holiday. The Knights of Labor, a labor union that was formed in 1869, decided to hold a parade in New York City on September 5, 1882, to honor its members and all other laborers. The parade was such a success that another was held in 1884, and since then, it has become an annual event. Some believe that the origin of Labor Day came from a man by the name of Peter McGuire. McGuire was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, as well as a member of the American Federation of Labor. Others believe that the holiday was suggested by a man named Matthew Maguire.

Wolverines dominate Brevard after jersey change by Fulton Hampton

In an unusual turn of events, the Polk County Wolverines, who came out for warm ups in silver jerseys and black pants as they have done before at home, had to go back in and change their jerseys. The referees were not certain they could tell the teams apart because the jersey colors were so similar (Brevard had white). Unfortunately for Brevard, that was the only time the two teams would be confused. The Wolverines switched to their royal blue jerseys and came out and scored at will against the Blue Devils, finishing 74-0 Polk. Anytime a football game has a score like this, the question of “running up the score” understandably surfaces. Polk threw only four passes for 42 yards and had a total of only 231 yards total offense from scrimmage. The Blue Devils continually gave

the Wolverines excellent field position, turning the ball over via interceptions and fumbles. A total of eight different players scored for the Wolverines – nine including Gage Stone, the kicker. Coach Ollis played Polk’s second and third teams the second half, and the last score was by Polk’s JV team and quarterback. This opportunity was set up by another Brevard fumble on the 12-yard line. Brevard simply was not able to generate any offense against the Polk defense all night. Scoring broken down by quarter was 28, 27, 12 and 7. First quarter Polk’s Jordan Smith started the scoring with a 29-yard run, set up by a great block by guard Floyd Graber. Anthony Carson returned a punt for 60+ yards, and Alec Philpott then scored on (Continued on page 11)

Cardinals lose season-opening game to Broome, 42-0 by Joey Millwood

It wasn’t the start that Landrum wanted for its season. The Cardinals, coming off their best season in recent history, traveled to 3A Broome on Friday night and came away with opening night heartache. The Centurions ran for 333 yards en route to a 42-0 victory. On the one hand, the Cardinal defense had trouble with the Centurion run game. On the other hand, the Cardinal offense

couldn’t get things going. The Cardinals went into this season with new offensive coordinators and a new quarterback. Some struggles may be expected on the first night under the lights. It wasn’t as though Landrum didn’t move the ball, however. The first drive of the second quarter for the Cardinals stalled out on the Centurions’ 26-yardline. Landrum turned the ball over on downs. That was Landrum’s best

drive of the half; the Cardinals went into the locker rooms down 21-0. On the first drive in the second half, the Cardinals had a costly turnover. Broome’s Kenny Herr picked up a fumble and ran it back for a 31-yard touchdown. The Cardinals got just three drives in the rest of the half. All three ended in punts from Landrum’s side of the field. That’s exactly how the “double wing” Broome offense is designed to run. The Centurions run the ball

and run the ball and run the ball, wasting the clock away for opponents, who get few opportunities for their offenses to get on the field. The Centurion offense was working overtime on Friday night. The Cardinals ran for 54 yards and passed for 62. T.J. Fincher led Landrum in rushing, with 21 yards, and in receiving, with 32 yards. Chris Shulman had 30

a five-yard run. Smith intercepted a pass and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown.

Second quarter, 28 - 0 Carson scored on a 20-yard pass from Philpott, immediately following a Reece Schlabach interception.Philpott scored on a one-yard run set up after another long punt return by Carson. Schlabach then scored on a 10-yard touchdown from Philpott after a Brevard fumble, and Tyler Jackson scored on a nine-yard run. Third quarter, 55 - 0 Donte Poston scored on a 12yard run. Matthew Darden then scored on a 30-yard run to make the score 67 -0.

“I told them to look at the scoreboard and see what that feels like inside of you,” he said. And even with the rough start, Mahaffey saw a positive. “We didn’t give up and just roll away,” he said. “I’m proud of my team. We fought hard.”

Fourth quarter, 67 - 0 Tanner Garrett scored on a one-yard plunge after a Brevard fumble on the 12-yard line. Coach Ollis said after the game: “It’s always fun to win. As a head football coach these [type] games can be disconcerting with the scores getting out of hand, etc. The thing I was most proud of was our second and third team guys and our eight-quarter guys (JV players) came in and played hard. Our return game was very good… we had a punt return for a touchdown from Anthony Carson, Alec [Philpott] ran the offense to perfection in the first half and everything was clicking. It’s a big win, we came out healthy…. I think this will give us some impetus going into next week’s ballgame.” Polk plays R-S Central next week at R-S Central. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

When you can’t wait until the next day, we’re here. When Colleen Stich started feeling bad one evening, she decided she needed to see a doctor. Since her primary care office was closed for the day, she opted to go to The Clinic at Walmart. “I hurt all over,” Colleen says. “I had never had strep before, but the nurse practitioner said she thought it was strep and tested for it, and it was. It’s nice to we have this option. I didn’t feel rushed, but yet I was and out quickly. The staff was very professional.” Colleen’s sister, Cathleen Kress, was so amazed by Colleen’s experience that when she, too, became ill, she went to visit The Clinic at Walmart. “I’m a nurse, and I was completely impressed because the nurse practitioner never took her eyes off of me as she put my information in on the computer and she washed her hands numerous times.” The Clinic at Walmart is open every day, offering day and night hours, for your health and convenience.

Many of us have aging parents whose actions often make us wonder, is mom really okay? I remember the day several years ago when I stopped by to visit my mother late one morning. I rang the front doorbell – no answer. I let myself in and heard what I thought was running water. I checked the garage and mom’s car was gone. Something didn’t add up. I knocked on the bedroom door and walked into an empty room. The shower in her bathroom was running, and I guessed that it had been on for some time. When I saw my mother later that day I mentioned what I had found, and as expected, she denied having left the shower running when she left the house that morning. Not good. If you are seeing confusion or forgetfulness with your loved one, and are wondering if it might be time for a physical and/or mental evaluation to determine if there is a problem, the short answer is yes! Some occasional forgetfulness is normal, increasing forgetfulness or confusion is a red flag. It’s not necessarily a sign of dementia, because there are a lot of things that can cause seniors to demonstrate changes in behavior, attitude, energy and cognitive skills. Among the many possible reasons for temporary symptoms are: depression, prescription
