ZassDesign, founded by mother-daughter team, Stephanie and Zulay Smith, began in 2009 with a focus on upcycling day-today waste (such as printed material, plastics bottles, aluminum cans, cork, scrap fabrics and mesh fruit bags) into unique jewelry pieces. Each piece has a history or starting point with ZASS an element of rescue and an idea DESIGN of transformation – something useless becoming an item of value. In ZassDesign’s ideas, they upcycle found/recycled materials from a diverse range of things. The marriage of aluminum, plastics, paper, cork, textiles and such are combined in their work to create sustainable contemporary and wearable accessory pieces. This gives the wearer a sense of personal environmental awareness. They’ve even upcycled such items as Formica samples into gorgeous earrings (shhh…no one will even know unless you want them to!) and have turned upcycling into a fine art.

On where they get their inspiration, Stephanie, says, “We are inspired by the beauty inherent in the disposable, the ordinary. We find our graphic design background bleeding into our pieces with accents of typefaces and experimenting with new forms that printed material can create.” The philosophy behind ZassDesign is that every creation is made with respect to the environment and the fundamental principles of ecodesign: reduce, reuse, recycle. Materials are collected from friends and recycling bins, the gathering of old magazines, postcards, plastic soda bottles, aluminum cans, wine corks, scrap fabrics and mesh fruit bags to name a few. Mamie Wilkins is the face behind the playfully named CockaMamie Designs and she has always loved jewelry. As a girl, Wilkins has fond memories of her mother adding to her own jewelry collection with vintage and other pieces from an upscale flea market. As she got older, Wilkins would borrow her pieces and once the 80s hit, her love for vintage jewelry was fueled even more. Once Wilkins entered college, she found herself scouting out antique stores between appointments as a sales rep, and continued to build a collection of her own. When she realized that her passion had gotten out of control, Wilkins turned to selling some of

While she’s always been drawn to the vintage, Wilkins went through a confusing year or two in the beginning where she was following trends too much and not focusing on developing her own style. She decided she wanted her pieces to continue using old buttons, buckles, interesting chain and small curiosities as her focus. While she still creates a small ‘line’ using old findings and beads that she’s foraged to sell to boutiques, those pieces are limited editions. Most of Wilkins’ work are one-of-a-kind crafted from vintage findings, and the boutiques she sells to appreciate the exclusivity. Melissa Lowery, designer of ssd jewelry, dabbled in jewelry-making as a hobby about 11 years ago. She began making pieces for friends and for herself, and soon found herself setting up at small craft shows. What started as a hobby became a full-time affair after the birth of her second daughter. “I finally found my own style which was a process and took me years to discover, but once I did, my business quickly took off,” says Lowery. After years of hard work, persistence, and an incredibly supportive husband and family, her business is now a fulltime gig and she employs a few parttimers who assist with studio production and packaging. One aspect of her career that she really loves is providing jewelry to fashion shows. Because she spends so much time doing production and wholesale work, the shows are a wonderful creative outlet for her and help push her outside her comfort zone. The shows also help invigorate her wholesale lines and bring in new energy.

Lowery describes her work as being very eclectic with a general earthy, organic and rustic look. She works with mixed metals – copper, bronze, brass, nickel, and sterling silver – and specializes in base metal etching, textures and layering metals. She also includes patinas in her work that are her own homemade recipes, including some that are 100% natural. To add texture and diversity and bring a recycled element to the work, ssd jewelry also includes organic materials such as found wood, drift wood, leather, repurposed leather, vintage items, antiques and natural fibers such as hemp, yarns, lace and hand dyed muslin and cotton. Lowery’s work is featured in more than 40 boutiques around the country. Learn more about ssd jewelry and where to find it at ssdjewelry.com. TS

STYLE SPOTLIGHT

THE BRA PATCH ••• Ruth Dowdy••• THE BRA PATCH HAS BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 30 YEARS. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STORE TO A NEW CUSTOMER? The Bra Patch is simply a store all about women and bras! It’s a very friendly, happy environment where we are dedicated to helping women find the best and most comfortable bra possible. What makes us different and sets us apart from other lingerie stores has got to be the personal service we provide along with the extensive selection and size range of bras we carry. Nearly all the fitters on staff have been at the store for many years and are very experienced and knowledgeable. We carry bras ranging in sizes from 28-56 bands with cup sizes from AAA up to N. With the huge selection of bras and sizes we can truly “fine tune” your fit. YOU DO A PERSONAL FITTING IN THE STORE. DO YOU FIND THAT MOST CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN WEARING THE WRONG SIZE? Most women coming into the store are there specifically for a bra fitting. Our fitters will accompany them into a fitting room, take a measurement and talk about any issues they are having and what they are hoping for in a bra. Then we use that information to select the bras

22 | triangle style

that we feel will best address her needs. That’s really when the real “fitting” begins. Measuring is only a starting point. All bra manufacturers use their own sizing scale, therefore all bras fit differently. That’s where our expertise comes in. We know how one bra fits differently from another, even if they are the exact same size. We use that knowledge to take the guesswork and frustration out of a women’s quest for a good fitting bra. And yes, what you hear is correct; nearly all women are wearing the wrong size bra. THE BRA PATCH HAS RECENTLY EXPANDED THE SHOWROOM. ARE YOU CARRYING ANY NEW PRODUCTS? We have recently renovated and expanded the store, almost doubling our size. This has allowed us to add six spacious new fitting rooms, with one dedicated to mastectomy fitting. With the additional showroom space we have been able to bring in many new items. The most exciting being “bra sized” swimwear. Just as difficult as finding the right size bra can be, finding the right size swimwear can be just as frustrating. We are happy to be able to offer swimwear from Freya, Fantasie, Elomi and Panache. Our selection of sports bras, bridal foundations, and nursing bras has also expanded.

I SEE THAT YOU HAVE CMS ACCREDITATION AND BOC CERTIFICATION. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? We also work with women who have had breast cancer. The credentials mean that the store is fully accredited with CMS, which is Center for Medicare Services and we have two, soon to be three BOC certified mastectomy fitters on staff. As of this year we are an “in-network” provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield. Working with women who have had breast cancer is absolutely one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. YOU CARRY A LOT OF DIFFERENT BRANDS, INCLUDING THE LE MYSTERE, WHICH IS ONE OF OPRAH'S FAVORITE ITEMS. IS THIS ALSO A CUSTOMER FAVORITE? We do carry many different product brands. The Le Mystere continues to be a popular tee shirt bra, as well as Fantasie, Freya, Panache, Elomi, Wacoal and Natori, to name a few. WHAT ARE MOST PEOPLE SURPRISED BY WHEN THEY VISIT THE STORE FOR THE FIRST TIME? I think what surprises people the most when they visit the store for the first time is how busy we are. We are not a sleepy little bra store. Women travel from all over for our expertise in fitting. New customers quickly become believers and frequently return to the store within a short time bringing with them another family member, a friend, or a work colleague. Our customers are truly our best advertisement. Nothing beats a good recommendation from a trusted friend. THE BRA PATCH 1603 NORTH MARKET DRIVE RALEIGH, NC 27609 (919) 876-8677 summer | 23

When I first walked into the Palm Avenue boutique located in Cameron Village, I was greeted with brightly printed frocks, charming accessories and an aromatic atmosphere. The cheery surf rock music playing in the airwaves up above made me want to escape to the Caribbean islands for some fun in the sun. As I started my journey of browsing the shop, my eyes first fell upon this lovely, little yellow summer dress. I wanted to sip tea in the middle of a secret garden whilst wearing it. The best part was trying it on. It fit like a glove. I couldn't wait to bring this gorgeous dress home and explore the ideas of styling it. With just the right shoes, and accessories, the only thing left was selecting the right setting.. a scenery filled with fresh, green foliage and beautiful blossoms. And, Voila!

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... Mixing prints with bright accents is one of my favorite things to do. I felt the dress and sandals alone would have been too expected and easy. By introducing the shocking pink socks and geometric beaded day clutch, I gave the summer dress some added punch. What I wouldn't give to live in this dress the entire Summer through. Airy, fresh and delightfully pretty.

I knew when I spotted this dress in Fab’rik, I had to wear it with simple, flat sandals. I wanted the dress to be the focal point of the look. With it's electric hue, how could I even attempt to steal its spotlight away? Instead, I dressed around the frock. Adding in only basic accents: black sunglasses, and sandals. “Albeit, yes, the clutch is trying to steal some of the dress's thunder, it also complements the hue. And the bone white cuffs and bracelets only bring out the blue of the dress that much more. Overall, I found this look both playful and fun to dress up. I would wear this piece to a summer luncheon or a romantic stroll on the beach. Either route I choose, this dress would fit in nicely. Easy, effortless dressing is what Summer weather is all about. I would also suggest loosely tying a scarf around your shoulders, for those uncomfortable with baring their arms or wanting to fight a chill in the air. Try color blocking, maybe wearing a scarf in a strong orange or you can keep things in

Page 4

the same color family by using a pale blue color. Whatever your choosing, this dress will always pop and stand out.

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... I'm always drawn to maxi dresses in the Summer. It's the kind of piece you can wear without overheating in the sun. Also, you look pulled together without having to give up comfort. The bright blue both reminds me of the ocean and Prada Spring 2011. When wearing such a vibrant color, keep the accessories simple and subtle. I brought some neon into the mix by way of the small clutch. The necklace dressed up my neckline and the sunglasses add both glamour and protection against Summer's harsh rays.

NICOLE RICHIE

Born into pop royalty, Nicole Richie has seen her famous father, Lionel Richie, sport some of the last three decades’ hottest (and not so hot) styles. Nicole has now made a name for herself thanks to reality television, her thriving boho-chic clothing line and one of this year’s most popular shows, Fashion Star. As a mentor to up-and-coming designers, Richie has found a new passion – helping future fashionistas make their dreams come true. We’ve got the scoop on this celeb's fierce fashion tips, style regrets, and what it's like to hold someone's dreams in the palm of her hand.

WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO BE A PART OF MAKING FASHION STAR CONTESTANT’S DREAMS COME TRUE? You know, it’s something that I can't even really put into words because the thing is that I have grown so close with these designers and consider them friends. To watch them have this opportunity is just something that is mind blowing! It's an opportunity that John, Jessica, and myself don't even have. I'm constantly asking these designers, “Do you know how lucky you are to have these buyers focusing on your collections each week?” Personally, I have buyers look at my collection once a season, and they pretty much like it or they don't. But to get that feedback and that kind of runway show is just something that people only dream of. It is so exciting for them and for me to watch their dreams come true. DO YOU AND THE OTHER MENTORS – JESSICA SIMPSON AND JOHN VARVATOS – EVER HAVE DISAGREEMENTS ABOUT WHO TO SAVE? Yes, you'll see that a lot on the show. We do have disagreements and sometimes we’re there for hours, you know, really just discussing who we believe deserves a second chance. It's really hard because we don't want to see any of them go home. There are some tears; it's definitely a hard decision to make. HAVE YOU LEARNED ANYTHING NEW ABOUT FASHION, BUSINESS OR THE INDUSTRY FROM BEING ON THE SHOW? This is the first time I’ve spent so much time with buyers. And it was really interesting to hear their detailed feedback. As a creative director and designer, sometimes when meeting with buyers you meet with them once a season. Often, they've got back to back appointments, and you do run into a situation where they’re just kind of giving you minimal feedback.

To spend time with all three of these designers and to really pick their brains and know where they're coming from is something that was very informative for me. WHEN YOU STARTED OUT IN THE FASHION BUSINESS DID YOU HAVE A MENTOR? Both of my parents have always been ones to encourage me to be myself and stay true to myself, and not fall into what other people want me to do. You know, it is important not to copy other people's careers but rather set the tone of who you want to be. And my father's always encouraged me to do that. COULD YOU SHARE MAYBE SOME FASHION MOMENTS THAT YOU REGRET? Well, I was a huge Punky Brewster fan, and I used to wear a green sock and a red sock and then wear a white shoe

11:05 PM

and a black shoe because I wanted to be just like her. My mom wouldn’t take me anywhere; she was mortified. I did not understand it at all. She told me not to take pictures in that outfit because I was going to look back and realize I looked nuts. And, you know, I never want to give my mom too much credit about being right, but she was right in this particular situation. COULD YOU SHARE SOME BRANDS THAT YOU'VE BEEN SHOPPING LATELY? I shop all over. I shop at boutique stores, department stores and thrift shops. It just really depends on my mood. I don't really have a strong preference. WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU AFTER “FASHION STAR”? I am doing another QVC launch of my clothing line in August. So that would be the next big move for me.

WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING CLOTHES, DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO LOOK GREAT ON A BUDGET? I am always one to never really focus on the actual label. I dress for myself and I encourage women to do the same. You have to know yourself, know your body, and know who you are as a person in general. I'm 5’1” and I don't buy something because it looks good on a hanger and has a $50,000 tag on it. I shop at thrift stores all the time. And every time I go to an event I'm not buying a new dress. I’m always encouraging people to borrow things from their girlfriends. And, you know, that's just who I am. Catch Fashion Star Tuesday night at 10pm eastern on NBC. ONLINE AND IN

LOVE

Dating used to mean meeting someone in your circle of friends, fellow students, or co-workers, hitting it off, and going out. Today, dating often takes place online—through websites like Match.com, eHarmony, or Zoosk. It may surprise you to know that computer-matched dating, far from being a recent idea, actually debuted at the World’s Fair in 1964. According to a recent article by Nick Paumgarten in The New Yorker, for five dollars you could answer a lengthy questionnaire and then a (very large) computer would “match” you with five possible candidates (in the form of a punch card).

5/20/12

These days, things have advanced a bit. You can choose from a number of online dating sites, including ones more specific to where you live (It’sJustLunchRaleigh.com), or what you believe (ChristianMingle.com), or even your age (OurTime.com). While I don’t know how many relationships were started in 1964 at the World’s Fair, an unscientific poll of my own circle of single friends reveals everyone has used at least one online dating site. April Smith is one example. A twenty-something nurse, she finds that there isn’t a lot of time in her schedule to meet new people. Her favorite site is Match.com, which, in her opinion, attracts people who are serious about meeting someone for the right reasons because the site is not free— it require users to pay a monthly subscription.

Keeping an Open Mind April admits she has had both good and bad experiences with online dating. “It’s important to be selective and open-minded when online dating,” she explains. “You want to get the best experience possible, but at the same time be safe and not lower your standards.” This can be difficult when potential matches do not live up to their descriptions. “For the most part, the people that I have met have been honest about big details and dishonest about little ones. I think if you go into the situation expecting perfection…then you will most likely be disappointed. Be open minded yet stick to your standards.”

user from contacting her. Her advice in this situation—“trust your gut” —don’t keep in contact with anyone who makes you uncomfortable, and don’t meet up with them “just to be nice.” Your first priority is keeping yourself safe, April says. Here are some other suggestions for being smart and safe: • Do be honest and authentic in your profile. Include a recent photo, not the homecoming photo from your high school yearbook.

your comfort & style specialist

• Do get to know the person online and by phone before you meet in person.

Raleigh: North Hills (919) 782.6565 Chapel Hill: Eastgate Shopping Center (919) 933.1300

• Do let a friend or family member know when and where you are going on a date, and with whom.

www.comfortablesoles.com

• Don’t let someone pick you up at your home on the first few dates. Instead, meet them in a public place, such as a restaurant or movie theater. Don’t give any information that could lead someone to your home or workplace.

There are also some potential red flags you should consider when out with your date. • Drinking too much: someone who drinks too much on a first date will probably drink too much on every date. And if you drink one too many, your judgment is impaired and your safety may be at risk. • Saying too much: it’s good to be open and honest, but someone who airs his dirty laundry right away (i.e. a wild past, weird habits, bankruptcy, etc.) is not likely to show discretion in other areas either. 40 | triangle style

• Calling too often: if someone decides after a couple of dates that you are “the one” and has to talk with you all the time, or needs to know where you are, or who you are with….can anyone say stalker?

Enjoying the Experience “With each date I became more comfortable with the experience and had a better understanding of what to expect,” explains April. “While I have not met my perfect match, I have met some fun people with whom I’ve remained friends. I think that as far as dating goes, the more people you meet and the more

experiences you have, the better you are able to figure out what you want and who you are looking for.” There are some happy endings, for sure. Becca (20) of Raleigh says: "My online dating experience was pretty good. There are a lot of creepy people online just looking for one night stands and such, but…there are a few awesome guys. I got lucky since one of those guys messaged me and we instantly clicked. We did not have our first date though until about a week and a half later, but now I have the pleasure of calling this special guy my boyfriend." TS

During The Summer We Tend To Wash Our Hair More Often. We spend more time swimming in chlorine and salt water. Our natural reaction is to want to shampoo everyday. Daily shampooing removes oil from the scalp and can dry out your hair and fade your color. When we shampoo everyday we are not allowing the natural oils from the scalp to protect and condition the hair. The staff at Joule Salon have been using and recommending the Absolute Repair Cleansing Balm to use in between shampooing. This cleansing balm cleanses the hair from products previously used on the hair, it gives you the ability to restyle your hair, leaves the hair more manageable and conditioned with out the drying effects of shampooing every day. This product is also great for people who workout everyday and like to shampoo often. Stay Cool This Summer With An Icy Shade Of Blonde.

3:45 PM

Page 14

Ida Claire offers fun, personalized gifts for any occasion including engraved acrylicware, monogrammed gifts and accessories

These white shades are becoming increasingly popular and add a more dramatic look to help you stand out from the crowd. If you have naturally dark hair, keep in mind that your roots will grow in dark, so make sure your committed to the hair color before you make the plunge. If you’re not ready for all over color, jump in slow by adding a few blonde pieces to the ends of your hair. This will still give you that icy cool color, but also incorporate the still, very popular, ombre look. Women with cool skin tones generally look better in platinum colors than women with warm skin tones. There are many different shades of blonde, so don’t worry! If platinum’s not for you, you have many other options when it comes to being blonde. You may need several visits to the salon to get the shade you're looking for. So be patient, take our advice, and move at the pace that one of our colorists’ recommends. If you go too light, too fast, your hair can get dry and damaged, which isn't pretty regardless of your hair color. If you want to stay on top of this summer trend, call Mark Christopher Salon today to find out how to give your hair that icy twist and keep your style nice and crisp. THE JOYS OF SHOPPING LOCAL

MIXING PLEASURE WITH BUSINESS According to Shop Local Raleigh, an organization that promotes and supports locally-owned businesses, there are a number of great reasons to buy from nearby shops. To begin with, it’s environmentally friendly, helping to promote local jobs, and it’s a good investment in the economic future of your community. But for many folks who like to buy local, often the most compelling reason is superior customer service! Individually owned businesses work hard to mix pleasure with business, building trust and relationships with customers to make sure that theirs is the company you keep. We caught up with some local customers and found out what they like best about their favorite shops.

Judy Hoffman : Mobley Shoes HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A CUSTOMER OF MOBLEY’S SHOES? I’ve been shopping at Mobley’s for over 34 years, back when they were located downtown! I’ve followed them as they grew and moved to their three locations. I’ve been shopping with them for three generations, bringing my children here and now my grandchildren. We love it!

WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU INTO THE STORE? When I first moved to Raleigh, my pediatrician suggested Mobley’s because one of my children needed a special fit for his shoes. My mother had always impressed upon me the importance of well-made and well-fitted shoes, and Mobley’s had all that.

Comfort & Style For Every Occasion

WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? The quality of their customer service; I completely trust them. Today, most shoe stores are self-service and you have to fit yourself. But when it comes to children, it is so important to find the right fit for their feet. Things are so mobile today; it’s nice that Mobley’s is something stable. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BUY FROM MOBLEY’S? I just love my Dansko confetti shoes with the yarn. I get more great comments on these shoes than any other pair I’ve ever owned. It’s always nice to walk into the shop and be greeted with warm smiles. Mobley’s is truly interested in you as a whole person, not just your feet!

WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU INTO THE STORE? I came in for help with a simple decorating project. One thing led to another and now Paula has helped me with several things. The work she did for my living room is unbelievable! Paula worked at my pace and considered my personal taste and style when making suggestions. When I told her that I wanted to do my whole house in beige, she said, “Gosh, you don’t look like a beige person.” And she was right! Now my collection of NC artwork looks right at home in my living room. With touches of apple green and magenta, it’s stunning and sophisticated. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING FROM SEW FINE II? I’m in love with my new powder room! They turned an ugly, drab room under the stairs into a glamorous space with a gold leaf ceiling, crystal chandelier and a wall lined with lily pads that blends perfectly with my koi pond on our deck. ANY SHOPPING SECRETS TO SHARE? Paula is happy to do as little or as much as you want. I suggest calling her and just setting her free; she’s unbelievably creative and really knows what she’s doing!

Judy May Smitten Boutique WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU INTO SMITTEN? A girlfriend said, “Come on, you really need to see this store.” And she was right! The shop has evolved over the years, but Nancy’s excellent customer service has been consistent. WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? Smitten carries great designs that really fill a void in the marketplace today. I don’t want to look matronly, and at Smitten, I can find things that are unique and age appropriate. They have choices that are designed to fit a woman’s body. For example, they carry skinny jeans that have the same designer look as my daughter’s, but are much easier

DO YOU USUALLY COME IN TO REFUEL OLD FAVORITES, OR DO YOU LIKE TO TRY NEW THINGS? I have some favorites, but like to mix things up and see what’s new. Nancy has gotten to know my style and calls me when new things come in that she thinks I’d like. I have so many favorites from this shop, but really love the dress I bought for my 50th birthday. I have to say, it looked fabulous! ANY SHOPPING SECRETS TO SHARE? When you go in, let the sales people help you. There’s so much in the shop, and they really know their stuff. Trust them to pull out some great things for you!

They don’t often repeat styles, so if I see something I like, I’m sure to buy it. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM FROM THE STORE? I get so many compliments on my favorite floral blouse. It’s done in a very comfortable stretch fabric, and the pewter and pepper colors are wonderful. I also have a buttery baby doll blouse that fits and feels great!

Not only is the staff talented, their customer care and quality of services is outstanding. I’m always greeted and treated as person rather than an appointment. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE STORE OFFERING? WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? Ora is home to some interesting and talented designers, and I have enjoyed several of their lines. The people in the store make it special; they are friendly, welcoming, and helpful but not pushy. DO YOU USUALLY COME IN TO REFUEL OLD FAVORITES, OR DO YOU LIKE TO TRY NEW THINGS? I love seeing what’s new and trying things on for future consideration, but I have also had pieces repaired, rings resized, and will be having a couple of older pieces reworked. I also recently had some inherited jewelry appraised. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM FROM ORA? My “go to” pieces include 2 necklaces from designer Echo of the Dreamer; black onyx earrings and ring by Andrea Candela; and a ring and earrings I bought last year. Jewelry is an investment as well as a pleasure. Shopping with a reputable jeweler you trust is reassuring and makes the experience a good one. This is why I continue to shop at Ora Designers.

Diane Baron At Ease HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AN AT EASE CUSTOMER? We developed a friendship when they first opened their doors about 11 years ago. I cannot remember not being a customer. WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? Lots of things, including Carol’s friendship. It is a wonderful welcoming environment. And of course the clothes are fabulous. DO YOU USUALLY COME IN TO REFUEL OLD FAVORITES, OR LIKE TO TRY NEW THINGS? All of the above. Carol manages to stock favorites in all price ranges and sizes. The look is sophisticated but comfortable. It’s less buttoned up and more easy to wear.

Her clothes have a lot in common with the European Lagenlook (simple fabrics, layers, and large jewelry), but she has other styles as well. NEW ARRIVALS!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM FROM AT EASE? I purchased a beautiful tie dye knit dress from Kedem Sasson. It was pricey, but when you calculate the price per wearing it was a steal. I wear it every year to many events. It fits snugly on top, but then has a loose skirt with interesting pleats and tucks. I just bought the black version of that same dress at a trunk show. Other favorites include anything by Blanque (interesting jackets, skirts, and pants – nice for work if you want a polished look but don’t want an uptight suit); the quirkiness of Rundholz; and Moruyu. Carol always finds unique accessories too. ANY SHOPPING SECRETS TO SHARE? I have generally always been larger than the average bear, and I think it’s important to look good at any size. Finding your style – what you feel comfortable and look good in – make it easy to shop. And when I find something that I like, I buy in multiples and put some away for the future. Then I go shopping in my closet!

Laura Hall CT Weekends WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU TO CT WEEKENDS? I’ve been shopping there for about 10 years – since Kristi's first store opened over by The Glenwood Grill. I was inspired by the beautiful window display, walked in and bought my entire spring wardrobe.

WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? Kristi has a great eye for fashion and makes shopping fun. She knows her product well and will often bring you something to try that you would not have chosen for yourself off the rack. If there is a jacket or top that is perfect for me, I will purchase the item in many colors. Just two weeks ago, I got some fabulous new spring pieces that you will not find anywhere else in the area. Kristi also had some unique fun jewelry to match. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM FROM THE STORE? I have a classic jacket that goes with about anything – and believe it or not, I have shoes and a handbag purchased about eight years ago that I still bring out. Kristi has high quality products that last – I like pieces that are timeless. ANY SHOPPING SECRETS TO SHARE? When my children were small, I would go to CT Weekends because I knew I could find an entire wardrobe in one place – and I could watch the little ones while I shopped. Kristi makes shopping easy for someone with a complicated life.

Jan Richards : Opulence Of Southern Pines WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU INTO OPULENCE OF SOUTHERN PINES? I’ve been a customer in Southern Pines for almost 13 years, and was lucky enough to discover the shop in Cary before that. I was first drawn to the

store by their beautiful window displays. They had lovely arrangements of linens, bedding and nightwear and I just wandered in to explore. WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? I love to shop for my bedding here – it’s divine! Their sleepwear is wonderful, and comfy too. They really know their products, and their customer service is fantastic. Lately I’ve purchased a lot of bamboo products. They’re soft, but hold up well and are very low maintenance. When it comes to my bedding, I’m the one that should be taken care of and fussed over – not my sheets! DO YOU USUALLY COME IN TO REFUEL OLD FAVORITES, OR LIKE TO TRY NEW THINGS? I love to go in to pick up unique gifts in all price ranges – including baby gifts as I’m going to become a grandmother in June. There is always something new and interesting at Opulence; my friends know I love the shop so much that they buy gifts for me there too. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE STORE ITEM? I just love my high quality bedding. It’s a great value as it washes well and will look great for years. ANY SHOPPING SECRETS TO SHARE? Go in for gifts – they do a beautiful job with the presentation and wrapping. But don’t forget to treat yourself, too! TS

AGING GRACEFULLY Written by Lou Scott

Writing a memoir is something most of us don’t do. Perhaps we’re too busy or are under the impression this sort of thing is best reserved for the famous. Or perhaps we simply think we have nothing terribly interesting to say and that it would be presumptuous of us to even try. That just isn’t so. Everyone is a legend—or someday will be-- in the eyes of their own family. Someday someone in your family will want to know more about you and about the times you lived through. They will want to know the details of your daily life. About the food you ate, the books you read, the details of what your life looked like. Even the world news that most affected you. They will want to know what it felt like to be you. When I read my Irish great great grandmother’s few surviving sentences from the 1800s, they meant the world to me. She said that the wind was howling, that she was cold and that she had only had a part of a potato for dinner, but that it was the best-tasting potato she’d ever eaten and she had had a lovely fire to roast it over. My mother, her great-granddaughter, kept a birthday journal of just one or two pages a year. Like birthday cake and ice-cream, it became a family tradition. And when I discovered the tiny pocket diary my dad kept during the Second

World War, I felt I had been given part of my father back. I read about his night parachute training, saw by his changing handwriting how long it took the worst of his wounds to heal and how he felt when VE and VJ days were announced. But suppose you’re experiences are more routine? Or suppose you are a recluse and your habits never change? You can write about that. That in itself would be worthwhile to mention. It’s the things in your life which may seem incidental at the time, that are often the most telling--the way something looked or smelled, the name of your favorite song. For example, whenever I hear the song “Key Largo,” the smell of eucalyptus trees and the steamy heat of Charleston at midnight, the windows of my VW rolled down and the music blaring— sit right here beside me. Then the rest comes tumbling back: the pride of my first marriage, the devastation when it ended; the sheer joy and hard hard work of hand sanding floors in an old house; the despair at leaving a town and friends I had loved; even the years I was imitating being a hippy. Life is like a kaleidoscope—your childhood, adolescence, work, retirement -all of it is significant but it gets scrambled up and some memories invariably get pushed into oblivion. Sure you may remember most of the highlights. But life really is after all in the details. That doesn’t mean it’s too late for you to begin to write them down. Nor does it matter how old you are when you do or even how many sentences you write. Someone someday will read what you have left and they will be grateful you took the time. And after all is said and done, so will you.

THE ART OF COLLECTING FILLS OUR HEART & HOME

HUNTING AND GATHERING Whether you’re a hunter or gatherer, our desire to collect things probably dates back to prehistoric times when Neanderthal newlyweds spent their weekends antiquing and dragging their newest knick-knacks and paintings back to hang in their caves. In fact, it was likely these early collectors who were also responsible for the invention of the wheel - how else would they drive all their fabulous new finds home? Even today, just the sight of a yard sale or an auction sign can fan our primal flame to seek out just a few more items to schlep back to our abode. Written By Audrey D. Mark

Some collectors seek out items of whimsy, like Sharon Norton of Raleigh and her collection of mermaids, which fill her home and her heart with memories of her childhood dreams. Other collectors look for items which are more regal, like Judi Hinton, also of Raleigh, who has an assembly of all things Anglo. Hinton, an English history buff, loves her assortment of teapots and commemorative items that beautifully celebrate British royalty and their special occasions such as weddings and anniversaries. Whether she’s home or abroad, when she finds something unusual that she’s confident would fit in just fine with her collection, she’s sure to scoop it up and worry about finding a place for it later. The Triangle has some excellent sources for serious collectors, as well as those of us just starting out. For example, Soho Consignments in Raleigh is great place to start your search for hard-to-find vintage furnishings and decorative items for your home. Owner, Trish Yovanovich, has a great eye for tracking down unique furniture, as well as antique art work and interesting international decorative pieces, all at great prices, which rarely stay in her eclectic shop for long. On the weekends, the Raleigh Flea Market at the N.C. State Fair Grounds is always a wonderful place to spend a few hours wandering around and you're bound to find something fun, whether you’re looking for it or not! In addition to area consignment and antique shops, craft fairs, flea markets, yard sales, estate sales, and online sites like Craigslist and eBay - live local auctions can be a really exciting way to build upon or even kick-start your collecting habit. Owner and auctioneer, James McCoon, of Tory Hill Auctions in Raleigh, explains that regardless if you’re an avid

collector, or strictly an amateur, “There’s no need to be nervous about checking our your first live auction. It’s fun, really easy to do, and there is absolutely no pressure to bid.” His local auctions, as well as thousands of others, are listed at www.Auctionzip.com, where you can literally find millions of items to bid on around the world. McCoon, who was recently featured on the History Channel’s series, “Real Deal,” holds auctions down at his Hillsborough Street location every few weeks. “Auctions are really enjoyable and a great place to come in and learn about so many different things,” McCoon says, “It’s a good idea to take advantage of the preview times, often as early as the day before the actual auction, where you can take a closer look at the items before you actually bid on them.” Once you’ve toted your treasures home, decorator, Sally Williams of Color Concepts Interior Design in Cary, has some great tips for incorporating your collections into your decor. “First and foremost,” Williams says,” Don’t worry about whether or not your collection “matches” the décor in a particular room of your home. If the collection is something you love, expresses your personality, or brings back memories, it’s important enough to showcase and make a statement all its own. This goes for original artwork as well. Contemporary art can hang in a traditional space, and vice versa. A broad collection of art can set the tone of a home and become an overriding theme.” Sally has a few other tips to consider when displaying a collection in your home:

TSM Collector Piece:TSM Beauty Myths

5/21/12

What’s Your Your style? Are you formal or informal? Think about your overall style first, or the feeling you want to project with the display of your collection. Generally speaking, symmetry and balance evoke order and formality, while the lack thereof will evoke a more casual, fun and informal feeling. Consider this when decided how to place artwork on the walls, and pieces on your fireplace mantel or bookshelves. Super Grouping If possible, put together groupings of items that complement each other in some way (color, theme). Don’t be afraid to put large groupings together. If you have a large enough collection to fill up a full bookshelf, do it! Showcase it! Be bold! If not, put smaller groupings of items together, and place among other décor on shelves, and in various spots in the room. A small grouping works

11:03 AM

Page 4

nicely on a cocktail table or side table. If you have plenty of books, your other collections can show off fabulously intermixed on various shelves, sitting on top of a stack of books or in between rows of books. When displaying items on the fireplace mantel or on bookshelves, vary the height so that they’re not all sitting next to each other in a row. You may do so by using decorative boxes to raise the height of a couple of items, or books stacked at different heights. Also, various heights of pillar-size candle holders work well for this purpose. If your collection is made up of very large items, and perhaps they have to be grouped on the floor, you can use various –height pedestals and architectural capitals or wood or stone, to achieve the same effect.

Depending on the intricate nature of your items, you may want to place them on a mirror, or in front of a mirror, so that the back or other details of the pieces can be seen without picking it up. Archival shadow boxes may be appropriate for smaller and valuable collectibles. These boxes can be hung on the wall in a grouping, or set on shelves.

Places & Spaces Built-in shelving and fireplace mantels are perfect spots. Above kitchen cabinetry is another spot where certain larger collectibles can be displayed. Be sure to place your items some sort of platform so that they can be seen from below. You’ll need more space between items at this height, so that items can be clearly seen and distinguished from each other. Less Room = More Creativity Several wall-mounted shelves of varying widths can be a great way to display small items. Stagger the shelves on the wall. (for a more formal look, use shelves of the same widths and place in a symmetrical pattern on the wall). The versatility of these “floating” shelves allows you to bring your collection to any room or space in your home. Even the powder room is a fantastic spot for few shelves and a small group of interesting gems from your collection. Consider adding some floor-to-ceiling built-in shelving to your family room, living room, or office. Alternately, an entry wall or wide hallway can be converted in to a gallery for your collection. Bring an unused corner in your home to life with built-in shelving to display your collection. Stairway walls and landing areas are also wonderful spots for display. 72 | triangle style

11:04 AM

If you have a large collection of items that you’d like to keep dust-free and hands-off, a glass-front curio cabinet dedicated to the display of your special items may be the way to go. A cabinet that has interior lighting is ideal, with glass shelves so the light will shine all the way through on all the items. You can have interior lighting added to an existing cabinet as well.

The Right Light Lighting is very important, to best show your collection, day and night. Be sure to have lamps on tables with your collections, and directional lighting shining down from the ceiling. Less Can Be More... If you still don’t have enough room to display your entire collection, consider the idea of rotating it seasonally.

LEMONY CHICKEN THIGHS

This versatile chicken recipe is great on the grill for summer or can be simply broiled in the oven. The onions are pureed in a food processor or grated so that once it’s cooked, the onions are sweet and syrupy. Serve it with rice or couscous and vegetables lightly sautéed in olive oil for a healthy and easy meal. Recently, I substituted lime juice for lemon, cut the cooked thighs into strips and added a few sautéed peppers and onions for a quick fajita dinner with friends! • 2 ½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs • ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice • ¼ cup grated or pureed onion, including any juice • Salt and pepper In a large baking dish or a re-sealable plastic bag, combine the onion, lemon, salt and pepper. Add the chicken thighs, turning to coat and allow the chicken to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4-6 hours.

To grill: Lightly brush the grill with oil and heat to medium-high. Grill chicken until cooked through, about 5 to 6 minutes per side, being sure the juices run clear when pierced. To broil: Pre-heat the oven to 450 degrees. Place chicken thighs in a baking dish, at least 2 inches deep and cook for 12-15 minutes until chicken is almost cooked through. Raise the oven temperature to broil and allow the top of the chicken thighs to brown, being careful not to overcook. The chicken is cooked when the juices run clear. Serves 4-6

40 Days to Fabulous As women, we should be forever evolving, creating and re-creating who we are and who we want to be. We juggle and struggle with being Wonder Woman in a Superman world and can find ourselves lost in the immense number of hats we wear. Yet with the constant roles we play and hats that we wear we need to remember not to lose sight of the hat rack. Underneath all those hats lies an elegant, strong and beautiful structure that should not allow itself to be ignored. Our hat rack can become full of rust spots, the loss of a loved one, a breakup, divorce, maybe it’s the challenges we face as new mothers, or we are seasoned mothers progressing into the next stage of life. Whatever the reason, whatever life has thrown us somewhere along the way we may have become jaded, rusted and unmoving. 40 Days to Fabulous the newest program offered at Flaunt University in Historic Downtown Apex, will help you recapture your soul and teach you how to balance your inner beauty with your outer beauty. Jessica Lamarre owner of Flaunt Boutique and life and style coach at Flaunt University believes that women deserve to not only feel their best but look their best. She created the 40 Days to Fabulous program around one of her favorite quotes, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?” To Jessica this quote has assisted in molding the 40 Days to Fabulous from coffee talk with girlfriend to its precise implementation. The mission of 40 Days to Fabulous is to empower women and teach them to use the gifts they have been blessed with. The program will offer participants life, style and image consulting. Closet purges, daily and weekly affirmations and meditations designed to clear the mind of stress and clutter. 40 Days will also challenge its participants to step outside of the dressing room by giving them daily and weekly challenges. These challenges fluctuate from fashion to physical, mental or social. What you are noticing commonly occurs in women in their mid-30’s and beyond. They often notice brown spots on their skin, which is referred to as hyperpigmentation. This is caused by prior years of environmental exposure, primarily sun exposure. In essence, this is old damage that is now coming to the surface of the skin. The challenge is, even with proper treatments often times once you stop the pigmented lesions are likely to come back. It is important to note that some pigmented lesions are not standard hyperpigmentation but rather melasma. Melasma is a hormonally induced form of hyperpigmentation which is more difficult to treat and will not be addressed in this answer. There are various ways to treat hyperpigmentation, however for the best results I recommend a combination of both in office; medical oriented spa, physician’s office as well as homecare. In a facility you can choose to undergo IPL photo facial treatments or a series of skin peels, most likely TCA or Jessner. For homecare you will need to use prescription strength 4% hydroquinone (HQ) a pigment suppressing product that contains Kojic Acid and Arubtin as well as a topical vitamin C and broad spectrum SPF. A word about HQ, the FOA states HQ should only be used for 3 months. While HQ is effective at skin lightening, it’s a photosensitizing agent making skin sensitive to light. Therefore, sun block must be worn. You cannot use this product while pregnant and HQ will not suppress the melanin that caused the lesions. Therefore, once you stop HQ if you do not continue to use a suppressing agent such as Kojic Acid and Arubtin along with SPF the lesion will most likely comeback. By doing both, facility and homecare you should clear up the hyperpigmentation in about 2 months and the lesions should not return. Anna Porrazzo owns Synergy Spa in Raleigh and teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, estheticians and spa owners worldwide. MOVIE NIGHT Written by Heather S. Parsons • heather@trianglestyle.com

In the days before my family had air-conditioning, I escaped the oppressive heat by going to the movies. It didn’t matter what was playing; every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon, I was standing in line. From that time forward my taste has been eclectic. For June About a Boy Hugh Grant, in one of his best performances, stars as a do-nothing young man who plays video games, lives on the royalties from a Christmas jingle his father once wrote, and “invents” a son so he can join a single parents support group. He thinks single mothers will be grateful for sex but won’t have time to want something more.

Rebel Without a Cause features Natalie Wood and the legendary James Dean in a groundbreaking film about suburban, middle-class high school “delinquents” during the 1950s. Dean plays a lonely, emotionally distraught and rebellious new kid in school -- the target of the “in-group” who deliberately provoke him. Natalie is the girl who loves him. In this film, as in real life, not everyone gets to go on from the angst of adolescence.

Tom Jones, an adaptation of Henry Fielding’s novel, features the delightful Albert Finney as a sometimes hilarious, always good-natured lad who enjoys himself in spite of his adopted father’s determination to make him into a grown-up.

The Straight Story is a touching old-fashioned tale about an eccentric man who travels from Iowa to Wisconsin on a riding lawn mower to visit his estranged brother.

The History Boys are eight bright but unlikely candidates who prepare for the entrance exam to Oxford under the tutelage of two teachers. One teacher focuses on strategies to pass the exam; the other, bizarre and offbeat, focuses on the passion and joy of learning for its own sake. It is this teacher whose influence brings out the best in each student and stays with them for the rest of their lives and careers.

For July Rabbit-Proof Fence is a true story. It’s about three young aborigine girls who in the 1930s walk 1500 miles through the Australian outback to rejoin their mother from whom they were forcibly taken. Because until 1969 it was Australia’s racial policy to separate half-white, half-aborigine children from their parents in the hope they would grow up to marry whites -- thus in just a few generations obscuring their aborigine heritage. 80 | triangle style

For August Shrek is just plain fun. It’s about an ugly, and very very cranky man who falls in love with a beautiful princess. A bouncy, toe-tapping film, with an unexpected twist at the end. Anne of Green Gables is a heartwarming and lighthearted miniseries about a spunky redheaded orphan who is assigned to an elderly brother and sister who don’t know what to do with her. They had specifically asked for a boy. The Secret Garden Maggie Smith and Peter O’Toole star in this excellent interpretation of the classic novel about a spirited little orphan girl, an invalid boy and the secret garden they find together. It is a film adults as well as children will really like. Miss Potter is one of those happy films -- perfectly charming and visually enticing. Starring Renée Zellweger, the story is about Beatrix Potter, the creator of the children’s book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
