Philosophy: My view of architecture is one of hope and profound optimism. This is grounded in the fact that we have the ability to create spaces that elevate our existence and presence on this earth.

Architecture is first and foremost about people, not buildings. It is a facilitator of human experience and a creator of place.

Because we are part of the world around us, and influence how people interact with their environment, we need to be aware of our actions and how they will affect others. Sustainability of not only the planet, but of the places we create is imperative to our future. Our spaces need to elicit some sort of emotional response, either to the architecture itself or the milieu in which it exists. This emotional connection is the only way that our spaces embody a strong sense of place, and remain socially sustainable.

Other Interests: Outside of architecture, I maintain a sense of curiosity and optimism about the world around me. I am concerned about social, cultural and environmental issues that affect the world in which we all live.

I enjoy travelling and experiencing other cultures; hiking, running and generally being outdoors; spending time with family and friends; being around dogs; playing the french horn; and biking around the beautiful city of Portland.

GELISEN SANAT PASAJI (Passage of Transformative Art) sustaining the urban streetlife of Istanbul

Graduate Design Studio, 2014 University of Oregon, Portland Turkey, although more progressive than many middle eastern countries, is still fraught with turmoil. Situated between Europe and Asia, it has struggled for centuries to define its identity. The city of Istanbul has always been the heart of Turkey, and itself quite literally spans the two continents, separated by the Bosphorus. The current government of Turkey is one that actively censors the public and stifles free speech.

Riot police in armored vehicles are visible around the main public squares or anywhere protests may take place, as a show of governmental power and the limited rights of the people.

My design proposal, Gelisen Sanat Pasaji (Passage of Transformative Art), is an architectural response to this act of censorship. This linear building contains an internal passage that links a bustling 24-hr pedestrian street with a quieter and more secluded alley. It also contains theater spaces and art galleries, both dedicated to the free expression of traditional and modern Turkish art. This public building provides a place of refuge and enlightenment in an environment of censorship. The theaters allow users to attend cultural performances and share in a common experience, while the art galleries afford a more intimate and personal connection between someone and a piece of art.

GELIŞEN SANAT PASAJI TIM SCHNEIDER SITE PLAN & PASSAGES

The site touches Istiklal Caddesi, an important pedestrian avenue in the heart of Beyoglu, a portion of Istanbul that touches both the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus Straight. In recent years, it has become Turkey’s icon of capitalism and democracy. On the north end of the Avenue is Gezi Park (famous for its protests beginning in May, 2013).

Because of the heavy foot traffic along and around Istiklal, many informal passages have emerged over time, connecting the Avenue to its many side streets. Whether they are interior or exterior they all have their own unique character and work together to form a network of well-known paths that residents use on a daily basis. This then becomes an important part of the ritual of passing through the city. The inclusion of a passage in my building is a way to tap into this network, using the program of the building to inform the experience and atmosphere of the passage.

PEARL DISTRICT/OLD TOWN NEIGHBORHOOD LIBRARY re-linking two of Portland’s most disparate communities

Graduate Design Studio, 2014 University of Oregon, Portland Libraries are the last free public spaces that are open to all. They are in a constant state of transformation due to changing technologies, and changing social, economic and cultural conditions. Neighborhood libraries need to be especially attuned to their location because they are geared toward a specific group of people, in a specific area of a city.

The site of this library is on the North Park Blocks near downtown Portland, between the affluent Pearl District and the poverty-stricken Old Town/Chinatown. This library functions as the heart of two extremely polarized communities, and acts to bring them together through the act of learning. This library would leverage the skills and knowledge of the residents of the Pearl District by letting them hold workshops and classes to teach others their skills. These could include anything from drawing, to sculpture, to knitting. The lower-income residents of Old Town would have free access to these classes, and would benefit by learning alongside people who may be in the same situation as themselves. Here, they can develop a healthy sense of community, which is difficult to do on the street.

Urban Analysis The site is located on the southwest corner of the intersection of NW Glisan St and NW Park Ave. To the north and west are low-rise offices and retail, to the south is a mid-rise mixed-use building, and to the east lie the Park Blocks. The connection to the Park Blocks is extremely important since they are a highly-used public space. The entrance is located on Park Ave and the circulation is organized along an axis that leads out to the park, so it maintains a strong visual presence while one is moving through the building.

Concept The form of the building is composed of four main volumes that are linked by an atrium and main staircase. The four volumes are each rotated in order to provide a playful intersection of interior spaces. Each volume houses a different type of learning program. The first is the main library space, used for quiet, intrapersonal learning. The second is for digital learning, the third for kinesthetic learning, and the fourth for interpersonal learning.

The overlapping of these programs alludes to the overlapping of different styles of learning. People use multiple styles of learning simultaneously, and so the lines between each are blurred.

The building program includes not only spaces for learning such as reading, computer, maker-space, and lecture space, but it includes an important social component. It contains two offices and a meeting space for social workers that are part of the full-time staff of the library. It is vital that there are people who are actively working on a day to day basis to make a connection with library users that may be homeless or very lowincome and need access to social services. final model

LLOYD DISTRICT MASTERPLAN re-connecting to the river

The Lloyd District sits directly across the Willamette River from Downtown Portland and the Pearl District. It is home to over-scaled buildings such as the Memorial Colosseum and the Moda Center (both sporting arenas) as well as the convention center and the Lloyd Center Mall-the suburbs brought to the city. There are numerous highrise office towers here as well that bring people in during the day, but very few people actually live here. This lack of residential development has left the district prone to crime and unsafe conditions. Bringing residents into this area is key to the redevelopment of the district and in order to draw people in, the urban form needs to be designed in a way that sustains the social and economic needs of the city.

This project envisions the potential of the Lloyd District as an ideal place to live within the city of Portland. To this end, a set of goals were set forth to address and improve upon the existing conditions. These include: 1- decreasing scale to accommodate pedestrians 2- increasing pedestrian connectivity 3- increasing density 4- utilizing existing public transit 5- improving the character 6- developing the riverfront

Site In order to increase connectivity and decrease the scale of this area, a number of large moves had to be made.

These include the tunneling of I-5 and the heavy-rail lines along the Willamette under the city streets in order to increase the connectivity of the area. The Lloyd Center Mall, which currently takes up 18 city blocks, has been dismantled and broken into smaller blocks that allow pedestrian, bicycle, and some level of automobile traffic.

Defining the zoning regulations and the amount of each building type is key to the success of this area. The incorrect placement of building types or the incorrect proportion of retail to residential to commercial can completely destroy the viability of an urban area.

I have left the main civic and commercial buildings that draw people into the area, and have added numerous residential neighborhoods, each at a mediumdensity scale. The main commercial area is in the SE portion and is concentrated along the Max line and Multnomah, a main east/west arterial. Shopping/retail is concentrated along major streets such as Broadway and Multnomah (E/W), Grand and 9th (N/S). These streets are where mixed-use commercial or mixeduse residential are located.

The connection to the river is also an important part in developing the character of the place. This connection is made apparent by a carefully-designed sequence of public spaces that lead you from the intersection of Broadway and Grand down to the riverfront.

Market Square The Market Square is the largest in the sequence and is suited to hold large public events as well as weekly farmers markets for the Lloyd District.

It is bisected by Broadway, one of the major shopping streets and is enclosed by mixed-use development with restaurants and shopping on the ground floor, and office space above.

The focal point of the square is at its SW corner where a Community Center faces the square, and also acts as the beginning of the squence of public spaces.

Neighborhood Square

This square, although still public, is the smallest of the three. It is surrounded on three sides by twostory rowhouses with apartment units above.

A Neighborhood Library sits on the northeast side of the square and has a large paved public space in front which extends across the small residential street. This turns into a grassy park with a small bandstand at the end where the Library (or any other community organization) can hold public events or small musical performances, in order to form a cohesive sense of community.

Waterfront Amphitheater

The final square of the sequence is an outdoor amphitheater that overlooks the Willamette River between the Broadway and the Steel Bridges. The shell of the amphitheater emerges out of the water and protrudes through the pier.

The amphitheater space is overlooked by a music hall on its northeast side, and by mixed-used residential on the northwest and southeast sides.

The amphitheater is connected to both bridges by an esplanade, providing pedestrians and cyclists access to views across the river to downtown Portland.

THE HEARTH nature as design catalyst

Design/Build Project, 2011 Black Hills near Custer, SD How should architecture and nature coexist and respond to one another? This became the central question we explored in the creation of The Hearth. It was completed as a design/build project, led by Paul Neseth of LOCUS Architecture, Minneapolis. The program called for two separate buildings: a kitchen area for the storage and preparation of food, and a gathering/living space for groups of various sizes to gather and enjoy each other’s company.

Our intention was to create spaces in which the architecture becomes the interface between people and nature. The idea was to provide the ideal level of enclosure so that users are sheltered from the wind and rain, but still have a visual and physical connection to the surrounding landscape.

The approach to and arrival at the site became extremely important because of its location between two very different natural areas. The architecture acts to emphasize the distinction between the two while also enhancing the experience of transition. The path to the site leads you through dense groves of douglas fir. Once there, you are thrust between the two buildings, becoming even more compressed, before the view expands out to a vast meadow beyond.

In order to complete this project from start to finish in just two weeks, we needed to have a strong sense of teamwork and be committed to the end goal. We all took part in the design and build phases, and in turn we each acted as project manager. In this role, we oversaw the construction process, took inventory and made sure building materials arrived at the site on time, according to the overall schedule of the project. design phase

CABINET OF CURIOSITIES british lawnmower museum

Undergraduate Design Studio, 2011 University of Minnesota, Twin Cities The premise of this project is the Wunderkammer, or Cabinet of Curiosities which has its origins in Renaissance Europe. In these cabinets, strange, obscure, or intriguing objects are displayed and are intended to be appreciated for their material or physical properties rather than any sort of cultural meaning. For this project, I took the existing collection of the British Lawnmower Museum (Merseyside, England) and used architectural space to re-imagine how and where people engage with these historical artifacts. The goal was to eliminate the pre-conceptions of what a lawnmower is, by removing it from its familiar context and allowing people to interact with it in new ways. This way, users are allowed to experience a lawnmower as if for the first time, and are able to appreciate it as a material object.

The site I chose sits between two buildings on the University of Minnesota campus which both house workshops. The industrial qualities of the site (physical, visual and audible) resonate with the industrial qualities of the lawnmower collection. They are industrial machines that are finely-tuned and crafted out of many intricate parts. The building can be conceptualized as a link between the two workshops on either side, that has been fragmented and shifted in a way that heightens awareness of key pieces of machinery located on the site. There is a path through the building which allows people to pass through while sparking their curiosity by exposing them to glimpses of the lawnmower collection within.

The modular construction of the building includes clerestory windows that provide ample diffuse light for the display of the collection.

Greece/Cyprus Field Study In the summer of 2010, I attended a field study that travelled to various sites in Greece and Cyprus. The intention of this field study was to investigate places that are experiencing rapid political, urban, and cultural change.

Our main focus was on two cities: Athens, Greece and Nicosia, Cyprus. In the rapid change of these cities, they have both had to deal with (in one way or another) remnants of past civilizations and cultures that have inhabited their city at one point in history. So the real question is: how do we address the inevitability of globalization in our world and how we hold on to our cultural heritage?

In these two sketches, I sought to convey the timeless beauty of these architectural works through the presence of decay.

Card Cantilever Project This project involved designing and building a cantilever out of playing cards. The goal was to design the longest cantilever that could still hold a tennis ball. This was an exercise in structural design as well as the ability to graphically communicate the intent of the design using standard architectural drawing conventions.

Value Drawing Light is essential to architecture. Without it, space and form cannot exist.

The play between light and shadow creates a sense of emotion and atmosphere within a space, and the subtle manipulation of light and how it enters and flows through a space has the potential to result in truly powerful architectural experiences.

These are construction documents for a hypothetical office building in Downtown Portland that includes both an opaque wall system and a curtain wall system. The main goal of this project was to focus on high-performance building enclosures that focus on continuity of the five main control layers (water shedding surface, water resistance layer, thermal control layer, vapor control layer, and air control layer). Another component to this project was to calculate the total R-value and find the dew point in the wall assembly.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography, to me, is very similar to Architecture. Both involve viewing the world around us differently. They require curiosity that involves a sense of investigation and discovery-leaving behind preconceived notions and allowing new, unexpected realities come to life.

Photography and Architecture contain many of the same components: subject, background, composition, depth, pattern, texture, tone, but most importantly they both contain a story and an emotion. Without these, they cannot connect to a viewer or user, and this renders them unsuccessful.
