ITH two full days of celebrations, the Embassy Consular Annex in Washington, DC, fulfilled its mandate of engaging the Bahamian diaspora while highlighting the people and culture of the Bahamas.

With the support of Bahamas Embassy, the fun kicked off last Friday evening with a cocktail reception at the St Regis Hotel. More than 200 guests were in attendance from various embassies, international

organisations. A large contingent of persons representing the Bahamian diaspora living in DC, Virginia, Maryland, and as far away as Chicago, also came for the party.

Guests enjoyed entertainment by Bahamian musician Funky D and got a taste of Bahamian cuisine and drinks. On Sunday, the Bahamians were welcomed with open arms by the historic Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church to give thanks for 44 years of Independence.

The sermon was delivered by Reverend William H Lamar IV, Pastor.

aul Harding can credit his father with introducing him to two of the biggest loves of his life – aviation and the Bahamas.

The senior Harding moved his family from England to the Bahamas in 1960 when he accepted a three-year contract as an aviation flight engineer.

“Before we came here, my father used to take me to see all the air shows in England, so the love of flying has always been in my blood stream,” Paul told Tribune Weekend.

And the more time he spent in the Bahamas, the more he fell in love with the country.

“After Independence in 1973 it became possible to apply for citizenship. I did because I wanted to say here,” he said.

Despite his love of airplanes, initially Paul chose a career at the sea. “Instead of going up in the air, I went down on the water.”

For almost 18 years, Paul operated a boat charter company which took visitors on trips around the islands.

“I was actually given a Pride and Joy Award for having the most repeat visitors, which was presented to me by Sir Clement Maynard and which was a real honour for me, and I have been nominated for a Cacique Award, although I did not win the year I was nominated,” he noted.

While he truly enjoyed his time at the sea, Paul admits that his interest in flying never waned.

“There was just a day where I saw a seaplane flying overhead and just like that I decided that the time had come to start flying. So I ordered my self a seaplane.

When I told my mother that I had ordered the plane, her first reaction was, ‘But you don’t even know how to fly a plane’. So I said, ‘I know, but I will just go to flight school’, and she said just, ‘I knew your father’s input would come up sooner or later.’ So I had to start flying school while I was waiting for my seaplane to arrive.”

Eventually, he not only secured his private licence, but became certified to become a licenced commercial pilot as well and started Safari Seaplanes in 1990, the first seaplane charter business in the country.

“There is absolutely nothing that can compare with seeing the Bahamas from up in the air. Nothing compares to the amount of beauty that this country has.

Even astronauts have raved about the colours and beauty of the Bahamas from space. It really is the best way to see the country,” he said.

Paul explained that the benefit of using a seaplane is the convenience of being able to land in the water – perfect for an archipelago where airports are sometimes few and far between.

“I would take people on trips around the Out Islands. I mean, consider Exuma alone has an island for every day of the year. We would land and they could have lunch on the beach and people just went crazy for it,” he said.

From childhood, Paul had a love for both the air and the sea He also was able to provide a provisions charter where he would deliver supplies to yachts.

“It worked really well, because of course I could just land basically next to them and we could offload their supplies,” he said.

Since starting his charter business in the 90s, Paul has also flown his share of celebrity clients, including actors Michael Keaton and Johnny Depp. In fact, it was the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star who

encouraged Paul to embark on his latest adventure – writing his memoirs.

“I met Johnny when he was looking for an island to buy in the Bahamas. At the time he was being mentored by Marlon Brando and we became very good friends. I would fly him and his family back and forth whenever they came over to visit. We had a lovely relationship. It was really Johnny, one night while we were having dinner, who planted the idea in my head that I should write a book.

Johnny has actually said that, ‘If fate had not handed me the path taken, I want to be like Paul,’ which was very flattering.”

Although he had the wish to write his memoirs for a while, life and making a living intervened, and it took a while to bring the idea of a book to fruition.

“It was not really until I retired and went back to the UK for a few years that I began to write the book. It took about three years to complete,” he said.

The result, “Sharks in the Runway”, is not only the story of his life, but also of how history has shaped the Bahamas over the course of the last 50 years.

“I found that a lot of writers who write about the Bahamas focused on the 1940s and the 1950s, but very few have

written about the 1960s and onwards. I have included stories about persons from all walks of life and tried to connect the timeline of what was happening with me with what was happening in history,” he explained.

In addition to the historical component, the book also gets very personal. It chronicles Paul and his mother’s personal struggles after his father left the family stranded in the Bahamas and his long wait to get legal status.

“My father left us with nothing and we literally had to survive off the ocean.

Part of the reason that I wrote the book is because I wanted to show young people especially that it is possible to make a living from scratch. If you have the will there are a number of opportunities and choices to help you make a sustainable living in this country. It is a very special place,” he said.

The book also chronicles his career as a professional underwater diver and the years he spent working as a photographer and cameraman for the Discovery Channel and freelancing for the Water Flying Magazine.

His book has been described as part globe-trotting memoir, part history of the Bahamas and aviation. Reviewers have also said it takes readers on a dizzying ride through a life of travel and adventure, presenting a story of perseverance and survival that will inspire the inner thrill-seeker and entrepreneur.

Sip, chat and explore womanhood Sip N Chat was such a success last year, that it is back for a second instalment this Saturday.

or women who want to have a simple chat, or bare it all in a no holds barred, judgement-free gathering, the Sip N Chat brunch might just be the right event.

Hosted by The Little Lady Diary organisation, the brunch will take place this Saturday from 12noon to 4pm at the Avista Lounge. Entertainment will be provided by singer Charisa.

Sip N Chat will also feature a selection of vendors displaying everything from novelty tumblers to journals, wallets, hats, makeup and mobile phone accessories. There will also be a photo booth on site.

Chat sessions will feature panelists including photographer Denell Watson, youth activist Ashley Pratt, blogger and TV host Aneka Stewart, and public relations consultant Nikki Jae. Sonovia Burrows, founder of The Little Lady Diary, said last year’s inaugural Sip N Chat gave women a outlet and an opportunity for them to be inspired. And she wanted to repeat that experience.

“I wanted to put together something that would bring young women together from all walks of life with just one thing in common: being a woman.

I was determined to keep it intimate and small, but obviously God has other plans as it is getting way more exposure than I expected,” she told Tribune Weekend.

“You see, so many parties are happening nowadays but you don’t see a lot of events like Sip n Chat. Events that allow us as women to be women; to be ourselves with no restrictions, no expectations and no judgement. Everyone needs to be able to go somewhere they can be completely themselves and that’s what Sip N Chat aims to do and be. Of course it was inspired by my blog and a lot of the feedback that I get

from my blog posts. I realised that we as women needed to sit down, sip our favourite drink and chat about all that’s on,” she said.

That is one of the main reasons Sonovia said she selected panelists who support the event in the name of womanhood.

“I came across the ladies whether in person or via social media and it just made sense to have then be a part of the event. They graciously accepted, and voilá, my all lady panel was birthed. In addition to the panel, Charisa will serenade everyone with her most phenomenal voice during the social moments. I love brunch and I know a lot of people who do as well,” said Sonovia.

Ultimately, she hopes that all those who attend walk away with a new perspective of womanhood.

“I believe that they would leave more appreciative of being a woman and they will see that we all want the same things and we all basically feel the same way. I believe that those who attend will recognise that we have to stick together as we journey through womanhood. For those who attend the event, it will be beneficial because they will realise that they are not alone and that we are far more valuable than anyone wants to admit,” she said.

3 Tides a charm New seafood restaurant opens at Baha Mar

resh is the keyword at 3 Tides, Baha Mar’s newest restaurant at the Grand Hyatt, which prides itself on using locally-sourced ingredients.

Although just recently opened, the cashless venue – guests can pay via room key or credit/debit card – has quickly become a popular spot for Bahamians looking to enjoy a girls’ day out or a romantic date night.

Featuring three open theatre kitchens and a display of colourful Bahamian art, the seafood restaurant serves breakfast (buffet and á la carte), lunch and dinner.

Waitresses like Kelly Clarke dish up menu favourites such lobster and grits; the fish fry, which includes rice flour-

crusted waffle fries, buttermilk slaw and tomato remoulade; roasted free range chicken; pan-seared fishmongers choice, and desserts such as mango guava cheesecake, rum cake and chocolate pots de créme. Meanwhile, bartender Ombre Moss mixes it up with crowd-pleasers like the popular “Cloud 9” cocktail.

Chef de Cuisine Terrance Copland told Tribune Weekend that 3 Tides is a much bigger operation than what he was used to in his native Canada, but said he is off to good start and enjoys working with his Bahamian staff.

Chef Copland started out where many young cooks find themselves at beginning of their careers – washing dishes and eventually working himself

up the ranks of the culinary industry.

“I worked at a few restaurants in central Canada for a little bit, then I got my first job at a Grand Hyatt restaurant there. They gave me a shot even though I hadn’t done much fine dining. I worked there for four years and decided to go to culinary school. After that I got another job at a Hyatt restaurant; a job at a fine dining sea food restaurant, which is where I got my passion for seafood and fresh fish sustainability. I was there for a total of four years and after a while the Baha Mar opportunity presented itself,” he said.

Chef Copland said it is extremely important to him that 3 Tides focuses on all its ingredients being as fresh as possible, from the vegetables to the fish.

“We have fish deliveries at least three times a week; all fresh. We have a hot and cold section, as well as a pastry

ummer is a time for travelling – be it for shopping, taking your child to college, or just enjoying a well-deserved vacation ‘off the rock’.

And while these jaunts abroad are always enjoyable, one concern has always loomed large in Bahamians’ minds – the fear of incurring high mobile roaming charges.

But this summer, BTC is aiming to bring their customers – both preand post-paid – relief in this matter with its “Roam Like You’re Home” campaign.

“At BTC, we are a family, and our new Independence roaming campaign is just one of our limitless summer specials for customers,” said BTC Vice President for Mobile Alphanique Duncombe.

“We are promoting a family concept, and we want our customers to remain in contact while travelling, with the best rates possible.

Purchasing international SIM cards is now a thing of the past as BTC has made roaming rates simple and cost effective.”

unit manager, explained that all incoming calls are totally free so there is no need for travellers to turn off their devices upon arriving in the United States or Canada.

“Whether you answer it or goes to your voicemail, it’s free. No need to hurry a phone call by saying, ‘I’m just calling to let you know I landed and reach safe’. You can now speak longer; there is no reason to time yourself. You can ask your loved one to call you right back on your phone and you don’t have to pay a dime,” she said.

And customers won’t even have to visit a store to activate the “Roam Like You’re Home” package; all it takes is simply turning on your mobile device and allowing BTC to take care of the rest.

While incoming calls are free, outgoing calls are just 25 cents per minute. Data is billed 15 cents per MB and text messages are five cents each. Once the phone is turned on, BTC automatically connects persons to one of the company’s preferred carriers abroad.

Customers travelling to the US

this summer will receive the message “Welcome to the USA. Please connect to AT&T, our preferred roaming partner in the USA.” In Canada, carriers include Rogers, Telus and Bell.

“The promotion will run until the end of August. We want persons to stay in contact with their family and friends. So that is the biggest goal right there, to make people feel as if they are still home,” said Ms Coakley.

Also in partnership with the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), for the entire month of July BTC team members will be on-site this and every Friday for a happy hour from 10am to 2pm, sharing more details about roaming rates, while offering brochures and flyers to educate customers who are leaving the country.

“We will be giving them some tips on how they can use their device while roaming, even on how they can save for their data usage, because even though we have reduced our rates on data, we don’t want our customers to still get ‘bill shocked’,” said Ms Coakley.

“With all of the data usage when

it comes to the smartphones, there are apps running in the background.

Even if you are not using them they still take up a lot of your data, so we just want to educate persons on this.

If you are not using an app, shut it off.”

Since launching the campaign, Ms Coakley said the feedback from customers passing through the airport has been great. Last week, BTC team members distributed brochures to more than 2,000 customers, many of whom could not quite believe the campaign’s benefits.

“Some doubt it by saying they are going to check their bill statements when they get back or check to see how much minutes are left on the phone after a call. So it is unbelievable, and out of all our promotions this one was one of the toughest.

We are also promoting limitless and family life, so again it is all about tying the family together and keeping it intact, whether you are abroad or still at home. We are giving customers the experience that they wouldn’t normally have,” she said.

Reggae star Sizzla comes to town

J

amaican music sensation Sizzla Kalonji will be taking the stage in Nassau tomorrow night, sharing his unique brand of reggae with his Bahamians fans.

The prolific singer is the first artist to be featured in Heineken’s Bahamian edition of the “Live Your Music” concert series.

Tomorrow night’s event kicks off at 6pm at the Burns House grounds on John F Kennedy Drive, the site of the annual Beer Fest. Tickets are $25 at the gate for general admission and $50 for the VIP package.

The concert series is a global campaign by Heineken that celebrates music fans and their passion for music.

Heineken will also run a series of DJ competitions the week following the concert. The first will be held at Carmichael Wholesale on July 21 and the second at Best Deals, also known as Kirki’s, on July 28.

The best DJs will get a chance to perform at the second “Live Your Music” concert on August 26.

“We know that when it comes to great music, you don’t just listen to it, you live it,” said Barrington Archer, Heineken brand manager. “ ‘Live Your Music’ creates the music inspiration that lie at the heart of our daily lives. It’s our

Behind the camera Bahamian becomes photographer to the stars

e has shot music stars like Chris Brown, T I and DJ Khaled, social media personalities like Blac Chyna and Gigi Gorgeous, but Bahamian photographer Jamie Bruce is still dreaming of the day when his home country fully recognises his art.

Jamie has been capturing moments with his camera for as long as he can remember.

In high school he was always the go-to person for shooting photos of his classmates. He referred to himself as a “mini photojournalist,” leaving pen and paper behind to create stories with his camera.

He went to college at The Art Institute of Miami, where he majored in Audio Production. During his studies, he learned a lot about film and photography.

Jamie’s career as a photographer was jump-started after he was approached by a model in Miami to cover a photo shoot. At this time, Jamie did not consider himself to be a professional photog-

rapher, but he believed that he could deliver something beautiful nonetheless.

“I really didn’t know what I was capable of, but I knew I had a good eye, so I started shooting stuff with her and then when those pictures came out people started to notice my talent,” he recalled.

Jamie and his camera became inseparable as he began to receive a lot of requests for photo shoots. His life as a pop fashion photographer unfolded and he finally came to the realisation that this talent could take him places.

Jamie has captured well-known Bahamian models and travelled all over the US to shoot different subjects. His camera has taken him to Miami, Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta. His work has also been featured in several American magazines and on MTV True Life.

Jamie said his work mirrors his personality. “I’m all over the place and I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing, but I’m not just going in one direction; I want to capture everything,” he said.

He looks up to famed American fashion and portrait photographer Terry Richardson. And on his shoots, he gets inspiration from music, which

Jamie also spends a lot of time educating himself on ways to perfect his work. He buys major editorials such as Vogue and Seventeen Magazine to gain inspiration from and hopes that one day his work will make it onto the pages of those magazines.

When it comes to photography in the Bahamas, Jamie said he sees the talent that exists, but believes that going outside of the country is something that photographers should be consider in order to gain as much experience as possible.

“We have some amazing photographers coming out here and that makes me so happy,” he said. “I feel like we’re putting our foot down as photographers and just showing that our work is art and shouldn’t be taken as anything less.”

Jamie also laments the lack of support from the Bahamian community, saying that many parents are

not willing to allow their children to explore the possibilities of a career in photography or other forms of art.

“I’ve seen that many parents don’t really support photography as being a career, but they fail to realise that this is an art and those passionate enough have the potential to make it big,” he said.

“How will these photographers go far with their craft if they don’t know someone who will encourage them?”

Jamie said it is his wish that Bahamians will start to support each other and hopes that his work can inspire budding photographers to go after their dreams.

Eventually, he aspires to start an editing and shooting workshop for young Bahamian photographers, especially those interested in fashion and portrait photography.

I do like that she was going for this celestial, all-white look, but it’s not quite working. And what little we can see of her shoes looks hideous.”

Cara says: “This is gorgeous. Tilda always makes these fashion choices that are just perfect for her. She is someone who always remains true to her sense of style. It’s simple, classic and elegant. It looks really lovely on her.”

Karin says: “This looks like classic Chanel. And it suits her perfectly. It’s the perfect length, the perfect style (I even like the pockets), and black always goes great with her red hair. The beaded tassels look like they could be heavy, but they don’t weigh her down.”

Cara says: “This dress is interesting. At first glance I wasn’t certain if I liked it, but after studying the photo for a while, I think I actually like it a lot. Of course it is like traditional Chanel with a modern twist, and she looks very elegant in it.”

y day she rules over a magistrate’s court, but in her free time Ancella Evans uses poetry as an outlet to deal with life’s joys and

challenges.

The themes of love, victory and death are all brought together in her first collection of short poems called “Any Way the Cat Jumps”.

“The title of the book itself encompasses the message of the book and it is very relatable. The message of the book is simply this: no matter what happens in life, you must have faith to believe that in the end it will be all right with you,” Magistrate Evans told Tribune Weekend.

“While my grandparents are deceased, I draw strength from the life lessons that they taught me during my formative years. For example, the poem ‘My Granddaddy’s Hands’ is a tribute to my grandfather, Rev Byron Smith. The poem ‘Mother’ celebrates the legacy of my maternal grandmother, Ruth Smith.”

Another poem, “A Child’s Prayer”, is based on her experience of working with street youth in Brazil. The first part of the poem is written in Portuguese.

Meanwhile, “Another Time, Another Place” talks about her idyllic childhood summers spent in the picturesque settlement of Smith’s Hill, South Andros.

“I have loved literature all of my life and poetry has always been my favourite genre. As a magistrate I find that I do need a creative outlet to express myself. I have been writing poetry for over 20 years and wanted to publish a book, but the time just never seemed right until now. Before he died, my father told me to publish my poetry.

promised him that I would publish my book. The time just seems right now,” she said.

In addition to being a magistrate, she is also a speech writer, motivational speaker and lay minister. Over the years, she has drawn inspiration from the people who have touched her life along the way. Her personal philosophy is that life is a journey, and as such, more important than the destination.

“After attending the College of the Bahamas, I attended Union College in Schenectady, New York. It was while attending Union College that I had the opportunity to live in Brazil for three months where I conducted research for my thesis on street youth.

All of the interviews were conducted in Portuguese. I studied law at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill,

Barbados, and at the Eugene Dupuch Law School. This is my first book and I feel exhilarated,” she said.

Informative listens for writers

F

OR those who love books and writing, a wealth of podcasts are out there to let you delve beyond the word written on the page. This week, we look at three shows that take you deeper.

The Wicked Library The Wicked Library is a podcast that focuses on horror stories. They take short stories written by authors all over the world and record readings of them.

First of all, the quality of the show is fantastic.

Fronted by a voiceover from The Librarian – the show’s equivalent of the Cryptkeeper from ‘Tales From The Crypt’ – it sets the tone for a creepy experience, then dives right in with the story chosen for the episode.

The latest episode I have to confess a partial interest in – the story is by Ricardo Victoria, a Mexican writer, and I edited the story when it was published in an anthology. But the recording is great to hear.

The performance by the voiceover artist is great and really helps the story to burst from the page. It’s a Lovecraftian tale of ancient beings, drug hazes and the Mexican Day of the Dead, all wrapped into one, and it’s a smashing listen.

Beyond that, there’s also then a lengthy chat between the host and the author, talking through the inspirations for the story and approaches to writing. It’s really like a DVD extra at the end of the show, where you get to peek beneath the hood of the storytelling.

Production-wise, it’s superbly done, and if you’re a fan of horror shows, it really should

be in your podcast queue. It’s heartily recommended.

Keystroke Medium From horror, we turn to science fiction – with Keystroke Medium, a show that interviews a host of different authors.

The latest show features Jack Campbell, the author of the Lost Fleet series, and the chat certainly takes its time and gets in detail on his work and his writing process.

Running for an hour, the hosts discuss the books themselves, the possibility of film adaptations of them, the way in which Campbell approaches his writing week, whether he plans out his stories or writes in a more off the cuff manner.

By the end, you get a real

sense of the author and his work. I’d not encountered his writing before but it’s great to get an introduction in such a way to someone new.

One of the eternal bugbears with interview shows can be sound quality – you’re often stymied by the quality of the Skype call or similar – and that does cause a little hiccup here every now and then, but not so much that it causes a problem with listening.

The show came recommended to me in an author group – and you can see why.

The hosts really do their homework and love the genre.

The Self-Publishing Podcast Another highly rec-

ommended podcast is the Self-Publishing Podcast – though be advised there’s plenty of swearing in here.

That’s appropriate for the show I listened to – which picked out nine movie moments that writers can learn from, and one of the moments is the first swearword on the big screen. Which movie?

That would be Gone With The Wind, and Rhett Butler getting frank with Scarlett O’Hara.

It’s a neat premise for a show, picking out the parts of a film that are great examples of writing. The analysis varies – the discussion of moments from Up and Inception is a bit soft, but there’s a really great look at crucial points in Memento and Lost In Translation and why they have such an impact because of the way the writing leads you up to them. Particularly the look

at the unheard whisper in Lost In Translation and the very un-Hollywood nature of that is well done.

I will say, it would be nice if the hosts could stay on track a little more – they veer all over the place early in the show before settling down to the discussion.

Spoilers, of course, for the movies discussed, so don’t dive in if you haven’t seen the endings of Memento or High Tension and want to discover them for yourself – but they avoid recent movies.

In other episodes, the hosts look at lots of different aspects of the self-publishing industry, so it’s quite nice that they vary it up with shows like this, where they focus on elements of the writing itself.

Growing in containers As the summer progresses, Jack Hardy says many gardeners appreciate the ability to grow plants in containers rather than in open soil

A

container can be moved from one place to another for decorative reasons or to a shaded area during the vicious heat of summer.

If a hurricane threatens we can do little for established earth-bound plants but container-grown plants can be watered and laid flat for the duration.

We all have potted plants at some time or another, maybe holdings chives, petunias or impatiens in hanging baskets, hot or sweet pepper plants, small ornamental shrubs, bonsai plants, or even a productive citrus tree. Last year I grew more tomato plants in containers than in the ground. This year the percentage will rise.

Tomatoes do well in five-gallon containers or larger. Tomato towers fit snugly into cylindrical pots to form a solid growing unit. As with open soil tomatoes, the seeds can be started in trays, moved to quart containers, then transplanted to large containers. Most sweet pepper plants produce well in three-gallon pots but some hot peppers such as jalapeno, wiri-wiri and bird pepper need five-gallon residence.

The black plastic containers available with purchases from nurseries are not pretty but are tremendously durable.

They may not be the best choice for displaying flowers but are fine for tomatoes, peppers and many other veggies. Also very handy are the sturdy five-gallon

For peppers, holes can be drilled in the base to allow complete drainage. For tomatoes the holes can be drilled two-inches above the bottom to allow a reservoir of water (and nutrients) to form. I use a contractor’s five-gallon container to wet my potting mix before filling smaller pots with my hands, never with a trowel. A few holes in the base prevent sogginess when I over-water.

Growing in pots allows us to start with pristine soil that is suited to the plants. We can use a potting mix or some potting soil (or a mixture of both). We can add composted material or soil amenders such as sulphur or chelated iron. One thing we should not add is fertilizer. The potting mix I use most regularly is Miracle-Gro in the yellow package. The blue package has moisture retention properties and this is used for specialist ornamentals and is rarely needed by vegetables.

It is the general wisdom that plants should not be fed for 30 days after being transplanted to a new pot or the open garden. Feeding is then done by adding granular, liquid or time-release fertilizer to the top of the soil and working it in gently. Although root systems are tough the hair-like adventitious roots are extremely sensitive. If your new location medium is enriched with fertilizer the young roots are likely to be chemically

burned and the plants will wither. With containers the fertilizer of choice is time-release and preferably Osmocote.

Your plants will only need to be fertilized once every three months so make a note of when you feed your plants as a reminder to do so again at the right time.

So far I have made growing vegetables in pots sound simple and relatively hassle free. But now we come to watering, and watering pots is a chore. You can water an open vegetable garden with a sprinkler and the job is easy, but every pot has to be watered individually.

Some gardeners use a measure to apply water to their pots. A plastic threepound coffee can is close to a gallon. Half a gallon of water is a good daily amount for plants in three-gallon pots while one gallon looks after a five-gallon pot. If you prefer to water your pots directly with a hose end sprayer do so after half-filling then completely filling a gallon container, in the meantime counting the seconds.

That will give you a good indicator of how long to spend watering each pot, regardless of size.

If a container is regularly under-watered the roots can enclose a body of soil and dry it out after a few months. Once the soil is dry it sheets fresh water off and the water goes around the critical area. So if you water a plant regularly but one day it seems to be suffering from dehydration – even after you have watered it solidly –

you may have a sheeting problem.

The condition is easily cured. Put a three-gallon container into a basin of water and allow it to soak all night. You can also use a five-gallon bucket that has no holes drilled in it. For larger pots you must use a drip system. Turn the faucet supplying water to your hose almost completely off. Then place the end of the hose right by the stem of your plant and gently ease the shut-off switch until you have a fairly steady drip. Leave this on all night.

If you are like me you have a hose that leaks even when everything is shut off – perfect for the job. In all cases one glance in the morning will tell you have been successful in breaking the dry root ball.

All gardeners love a good shower of rain as this means they do not have to water their vegetables plots, but container growing vegetables may still need watering. The plants you are growing tend to form an umbrella over the soil in the pot. Even without this factor, it needs an awful lot of rain to add a gallon of water to your pots.

Vegetables grown in containers tend to be free of nematode attacks for a long time. If nematodes are detected you can use the soil for petunias and other annuals and start again with fresh potting mix for your veggies.

A thrilling epic in ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES RUNNING TIME: 142 MINS

A

pparently all the new Planet of the Apes films needed to do to really hit a home run was take the humans out of the equation. It’s what this whole trilogy has been leading to, really, as we dipped our toes into the rise, dawn and now war of this burgeoning civilisation of apes and the humans who are desperately and often dishonorably fighting for their survival.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” is a riveting and surprisingly poignant epic that’s a shade above the rest of the franchise dreck populating every multiplex in the country. It’s as though director Matt Reeves, screenwriter Mark Bomback and the production actually put care and thought into what they were doing with their characters.

Reeves wastes no time getting the action started with a gripping opening battle. We enter the world through the eyes of some terrified intruders. A group of human soldiers walk through the woods in search of Caesar (Andy Serkis). They don’t know whether he’s still alive, but their leader is hell-bent on exterminating the apes.

Caesar and his followers have been operating from a secret hideout in the woods — a gorgeous little Eden tucked away behind a thundering waterfall.

When the soldiers find them, the apes fight back swiftly and effectively and nearly take out all of the combatants.

survivors to send a message back to their leader that the apes are not savages and just want to live in peace separately from the humans.

Of course the message inspires exactly the opposite reaction and the beautiful and harrowing and nearly silent nighttime raid that comes soon leaves the apes no choice but to abandon their home and hit the road

in search of safety. Caesar, however, decides he must go off alone and avenge his community by destroying the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), a deranged Kurtz figure who is truly one of the best true villains we’ve had in quite some time.

A few of Caesar’s comrades follow him on his journey to find the Colonel.

Along the way they pick up a young,

mute girl (Amiah Miller) and a tiny, manic and adorable zoo ape voiced

by Steve Zahn who has the same sort of comic energy as Yoda on Dagobah (without all the force stuff and Jedi training). When they arrive at the Colonel’s base, they find a much bleaker and more complicated situation than they could have ever expected.

To say too much more about the plot would probably be a mistake and part of the greatness of Bomback’s script is how even in following a pretty standard exodus story, it still manages to surprise and captivate throughout, and with minimal dialogue too.

Caesar also continues to be a fascinating and truly complex character that’s as well-conceived and executed as a live-action performance. Harrelson, too, is a menacing delight in his role that has more layers than might meet the eye.

“War for the Planet of the Apes” should be a satisfactory conclusion for the series, but that’s naively assuming franchises are even allowed to have intentional endings. Regardless of what happens or doesn’t happen next for the Planet of the Apes, this installment is very simply a great time at the movies.

Bahamian film ‘Passage’ gets US TV debut

areem Mortimer’s award-winning short film “Passage” will air on ASPiRE, an American television station, on July 18 at 8pm.

The film will be shown as a part of the ABFF Independent, a weekly series that presents the best independent short films and documentaries from emerging African-American artists and filmmakers.

The network was launched in 2012 by basketball icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

SPiRE is available in over 19 million homes in 22 of the top 25 African-American markets

“Passage”, a winner at the Bahamian Icon Awards in 2015, tells the story of a young woman and her brother fighting for survival while being smuggled into the United States on a fishing vessel.

The woman is trapped in the hold of a ship and must hide the fact that her adolescent brother is ill to avoid him being thrown overboard. It is the precursor to the recently completed feature film called “Cargo”, also a winner of the Bahamian Icon Award in 2017, which is currently enjoying a festival run.

continues to reach millions of people and remains a topic of conversation”, said Mr Mortimer.

A film with primarily Bahamian cast and crew, “Passage” has now been screened in more than 52 countries. In 2015, the Public Media Alliance acquired the short film for worldwide distribution. The PMA is the largest association of public broadcasters in the world and provides content for public stations for 2.5 billion people in 52 countries. In addition, the National Black Programming Consortium included ‘Passage’ in its popular Afropop series.

‘SNL’, ‘Westworld’ lead Emmy Award nominations with 22 nods

By LYNN ELBER AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Saturday Night Live,” powered by madcap skits skewering the Trump administration, earned 22 Emmy Award nominations, including bids for Alec Baldwin’s florid portrayal of the president and Melissa McCarthy’s manic, gender-busting take on press secretary Sean Spicer.

The long-running NBC variety show tied with HBO’s sci-fi drama “Westworld,” which also earned 22 bids on Thursday, to jointly top the field for the 69th Primetime Emmys to be presented in September.

Netflix big-shouldered the best drama category with three contenders, “The Crown, “House of Cards” and “Stranger Things,” a best-ever total for streaming as its platforms grow in strength and compete with broadcast and cable.

“Feud: Bette and Joan,” about the epic clash of Hollywood divas Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, reaped 18 nominations, including for stars Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. Other big-screen stars making a splash on the small screen Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, nominated for “Big Little Lies,” which is competing with “Feud” for best limited series.

“Veep,” the most-nominated comedy with 17 bids, has a chance for its third consecutive top comedy trophy.

Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus has the chance to build on her record of most wins for a lead comedy actress: She has five for “Veep” and one for “New Adventures of Old Christine.”

Jeffrey Tambor has a chance for the same Emmy hat trick: He’s nominated again as best comedy actor for “Transparent” after taking the trophy the past two years.

as well as diversity. Donald Glover’s freshman “Atlanta” earned a best comedy bid, as did “Master of None,” starring its nominated co-creator, Aziz Ansari, and “Black-ish.”

There was room in for an old favourite, “Modern Family,” although it earned only a handful of bids besides best comedy, including for Ty Burrell in the supporting actor category.

“Silicon Valley” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” round out the best comedy ranks.

Samantha Bee, who broke into the late-night male domain with “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” earned a variety talk show nomination for her efforts. Her competitors include Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, James Corden and Bill Maher.

The drama field opened up with the absence of HBO’s dominant “Game of Thrones,” which aired outside the eligibility window for Emmy consideration this year. It won 12 Emmys last year, including its second consecutive best drama award.

Newcomers were ready to step in, including breakout series “This Is Us.” It received 11 nods, including the first best-drama series for a network show since “The Good Wife” in 2011.

Sci-fi drama series “Stranger Things” received an impressive 18 bids, including one for star Millie Bobby Brown, while “The Crown,” a lavish peek at the life of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth as played by the nominated Claire Foy, received a total of 13 bids.

So did the dystopian Hulu saga “The Handmaid’s Tale,” including a nomination for star Elisabeth Moss.

“Better Call Saul,” the “Breaking Bad” spinoff is also nominated, along with star Bob Odenkirk.

Groundbreaking “Girls” didn’t get a best comedy bid for its sixth and final season. But it cleaned up for its guest actors, with nods going to Becky Ann Baker, Riz Ahmed and Matthew Rhys.

Louis-Dreyfus’ competition for top comedy actress includes Allison Janney of “Mom,” who shifted categories after twice capturing the supporting award. Other nominees are Pamela Adlon of “Better Things,” Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin for “Grace and Frankie,” Tracee Ellis Ross for “Black-ish” and Ellie Kemper for “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

The Emmys are scheduled to air September 17 on CBS, with Colbert as host.

uring one of their early visits to Kenya Pat Cavendish O’Neill met a tall, fit and superficially charming Mauritian by the name of Pierre d’Unienville. However, like so many weak characters, he had a surface bravado. She admitted in her biography “Lion in the Bedroom” that he was the only man with whom she had an affair for whom she had no admiration. However, he did change Pat’s life.

“Pierre came to meet me at the airport. Tucked under his arm was a tiny little fluffy cat, its eyes not even open. As we walked to the car, he handed it to me and said, ‘Darling, this is a present for you’. She had been found next to a dead lioness in the Tana River country to the east. The little lion cub was so small she fitted into the palm of my hand. Giving her the name of Tana, I took her home.”

For the next seven years this lion cub

would become the axis of Pat’s life, the object of so much of her love, and the cause of so many of her tears. She would become a part of her. She was to be her constant companion for many years, sharing her days and her sleep at night.

She was to save her life, and she allowed her to become part of her animal world.

She shared the freedom of her world just as she readily accepted the restrictions of human life. Tana became the reason for her life in Africa, and through her she became involved with all the animals of the wild.

The little lioness slept on her bed and she house-trained it just like her dogs. Pat soon realised that she was responsible for a very special being.

She was much more difficult to train than her puppies had been, but after about three months she was quite strong and considered herself to be one of the dogs. When Pat’s mother, Lady Kenmare, came out to Kenya she

discussed the problem of Tana with her.

The answer changed everything. Being the supportive mother she always was to her children she had the idea that her daughter should stay in Kenya and bring up Tana herself.

They were soon house hunting for the two of them. It had to be a very special place – far enough away from Nairobi. Eventually they found the perfect place – a house on the Ololua Ridge at Karen called Ol Orion – a typical Kenyan bungalow, with a shingle roof, leaded diamond-paned windows, verandahs, lots of rooms, and a large garden. The 25-acre property bordered the Ngong hills and Nature Reserve.

In front it was all Masai reserve – and behind a thick indigenous forest doing down to a stream. It was much the same as what Karen Blixen described in “Out of Africa”. Lady Kenmare bought the property for £10,000 and from then on spent the winters with her daughter

in Kenya. Of course she immediately plunged into redecorating the house with Colefax and Fowler and they shipped out what furniture they could from the basements at Fiorentina. Ol Orion might have had five bedrooms but they almost immediately added two guest cottages with thatched roofs, double bedrooms and bathrooms.

Pat was in her early 30s when she was given Tana. Ol Orion might have been a dream house – but the dedication of looking after a five-month-old young lioness was immense. One day a film company had imported a big black-maned lion and his trainer from Hollywood. Introducing herself to the trainer in the New Stanley Hotel she was given some advice that she never forgot: “Never let her bring her claws out, never let her become possessive of her food, never put yourself in an inferior position. You must always be the leader, the matriarch and always command respect. Remember, she must be punished for any infractions of the rules you have set. A lioness will give her recalcitrant offspring a swipe. Never hit twice as that is not punishment but an incentive to fight. All correction of animals must be administered at the time, not five minutes later. One of the most important things to remember is that animals, especially wild ones, are sensitive to human emotions. Aggressive and moody people should never have dealings with wild animals, though unfortunately they do.”

After Tana had been weaned from her bottle, her food consisted of about six kilogrammes of meat a day, plus two litres of milk. She was fed once a day at 6.30am. To prevent the lion cub becoming possessive of her food, Pat always put her hand in the food bowl. At night she shared her bed with Tana and the dogs. As she grew larger Tana took up half the bed. They came to know each other’s moods. When fully grown Tana was given seven kilogrammes of meat a day and two litres of milk. She had developed into an enormous lioness. She followed Pat, with the dogs, and either sat beside her chair or under the table at mealtimes. She was also taught to lie down if strangers were in the room. In the long hot summer days the lioness would jump into a large chestnut tree in front of the house, onto the house, and then lie astride the shingled roof under the shade of the tree’s branches.

Quite soon Pat was also given a baby chimpanzee which she called Joseph and which was added to her menagerie.

Within a few weeks Pat had, apart from Tana the lioness, Joseph the chimpanzee,

Duma the cheetah, a baboon named Jason, several Vervet monkeys, two Sykes’ monkeys, and a rare owl-faced monkey from the Congo. She also housed a bushbuck, two baby warthogs, two genet cats and two crowned cranes.

As well as the wild animals she had five Bahamian wild dogs – rescued in Nassau – two poodles, a pug, an Alsatian hound, and a little while later on an Alsatian bitch. There were also some domestic cats. It was too much to handle, and so Lady Kenmare sent out Miss Lane – a lady’s maid who had worked for the family in England. She was given her own cottage and saw to all the

feeding and grooming at Ol Orion in Karen. It was a full and busy life and, as Pat was not able to travel to France any more, they all came to Karen instead.

There would be lunch and dinner parties and overnight guests, and everyone soon got used to this somewhat eccentric English woman who lived with a large lioness and several other wild animals in her house. She had a Land Rover and, always with Tana the lioness and some other of her animals, they would go on their own little safaris to various lodges and tented camps in Kenya, but also further south to the Ngorongoro Crater in what was then Tanganyika, now

Tanzania. It must have been a strange sight, but the eccentricity was tolerated.

Lady Kenmare was now aging and sometimes stayed in Kenya for six months, supervising everybody in her usual disorganised fashion. She became part of the life in Karen, but eventually had to return to Fiorentina in France. She now always arranged for a wheelchair – not just because she needed it but also because it gave her an excuse for special attention, which she demanded. When she was away life veered away from any semblance of respectability to one of chaos ruled by the animal world.

“Life in this country I had chosen was endless days of happiness; I loved the sun, the air, the beautiful skies, the beauty of the landscape and the people.

The days turned into years and time passed. Tana matured into a magnificent and enormous tawny lioness with the character of an angel ... She would often spend her days going off to the Ngong Hills to lie up under a bush ... I was frantic but Mulete (the servant) assured me that she had been going off to the Reserve and was probably looking for a husband! I was not at all amused.

Assuring him that she was much too young for husbands, I took the jeep and went looking for her ... This became a daily pattern,” Pat writes.

Behind the camera Bahamian becomes photographer to the stars

e has shot music stars like Chris Brown, T I and DJ Khaled, social media personalities like Blac Chyna and Gigi Gorgeous, but Bahamian photographer Jamie Bruce is still dreaming of the day when his home country fully recognises his art.

Jamie has been capturing moments with his camera for as long as he can remember.

In high school he was always the go-to person for shooting photos of his classmates. He referred to himself as a “mini photojournalist,” leaving pen and paper behind to create stories with his camera.

He went to college at The Art Institute of Miami, where he majored in Audio Production. During his studies, he learned a lot about film and photography.

Jamie’s career as a photographer was jump-started after he was approached by a model in Miami to cover a photo shoot. At this time, Jamie did not consider himself to be a professional photog-

rapher, but he believed that he could deliver something beautiful nonetheless.

“I really didn’t know what I was capable of, but I knew I had a good eye, so I started shooting stuff with her and then when those pictures came out people started to notice my talent,” he recalled.

“I always thought of this as a simple hobby, but people were asking for more work which surprised me.”

The Bahamian said he became motivated to do something more with his talent. He staged mock photo shoots with his friends, capturing simple images in his living room.

“I did a lot of practicing with my friends,” he said. “I took advantage of the time that I had and practiced because I knew that my career

Forgotten facts Paul C Aranha

Pat has released two biographies, the first in 2004 and the second in 2012 Her elder brother Rory Cameron had sold Fiorentina and then Le Clos in the South of France before moving into an old farmhouse in Ménerbes, Provence.

He died of AIDS in 1985. Pat’s younger brother Caryll, who had inherited the title Lord Waterpark, had a distinguished career in England after all the family’s Kenyan properties were either abandoned or sold. He pursued his great passion, aviation, and visited Broadlands every year, sometimes staying for months helping with the property and accounts. At one time there were 300 racehorses, but those days are long gone and Pat has had to sell off much of her surrounding land. Lord Waterpark died in 2013.

Pat still lives in Broadlands with 35 dogs, nine donkeys, 10 cats, 12 baboons, 22 vervet monkeys, eight goats, two bullocks, two pigs, umpteen birds, and one beloved chimpanzee named Kalu who has found her way deepest into Pat’s heart. She wrote a new book about her life – “A Chimpanzee in the Wine Cellar” – in 2012, but her life is sadly diminished. Her husband Frank O’Neill, who used to spend part of the year in South Africa where he learned to share his wife with her animals, finally left to live in Sydney with someone else. He complained that he was fed up with his beer and cigarettes being stolen, and noted that when she wrote her will she

had excluded him but left $40 million to Kalu her chimpanzee. Now in her early 90s, Pat lives a very different life from the luxury and enormous wealth into which she was born.

Her fairy tale ended suddenly and viciously when she discovered that her $100 million (690 million in South African Rand) inheritance had been stolen from right under her nose. A “trusted financial adviser” in the UK is said to have cleaned out her investments and bank accounts leaving her with nothing and forcing her to sell her Broadlands Stud and Farm to a South African property developer, most of which was taken to pay off her debts.

It is believed her fortune was taken in small amounts over the years, and her financial adviser had taken advantage of her lack of knowledge about finances when he convinced her to take out a bond on the farm and disappeared with the substantial amount of cash. Luckily, when she sold Broadlands one of the conditions of the sale was that she could live in the house with her animals for the rest of her life. Friends help her keep going, as the little money she gets from her two books is not enough to pay her bills. It is a hand to mouth existence, but Pat has never laid charges against her financial adviser and refuses to name the person believed to have stolen her money.

“During my mother’s time I never handled money. I had a financial adviser who handled the money after my mother died. I’m a woman who does not know much about money. I’m not good with dates and figures. When he was alive my brother got auditors to investigate. They were here in South Africa for about a month trying to find out where the money was. What happened to me was unbelievable ... I don’t know what will be left when I die. I don’t want to spend much money because I am determined that my animals are cared for ... Anyway, I’d much rather have my animals than millions.”

Perhaps Pat Cavendish O’Neill’s only true legacy may be the outlandishly extraordinary life she led and which she recorded in her two personal biographies.

he front page of the June 16th edition of The Tribune Weekend talked about “endless love” as a lead-in to a story about weddings.

Weddings made me think of an old acquaintance named Bert Perry and the ‘helicopter wedding’ that he and I arranged. Sadly, Bert is not with us anymore, having moved on to a ring far greater than those in which he once boxed.

‘The Fight Goes On’ is the title of the autobiography of Bert Perigord, Jr, two-time boxing champion of the Bahamas, whom I got to know after he had transformed himself with another career as ‘The Wedding Man’ and was making a new name for himself, operating a limousine service focused on weddings.

Bert was canvassing for clients for his new service and I needed passengers for Trans Island Airways’ fledgling helicopter service. We came up with the idea of his using my helicopter to fly a bride and groom to their wedding reception and agreed that the first

couple would be flown for free. TIA needed people to know about their helicopter.

Bert’s want ad in the press was eagerly received and he describes his negotiations in his book: “I remember meeting with (Arthur) Barnett’s daughter, Ann, and her fiancé, Colin Cover. They both sat with brilliant smiles on their faces...as I was giving assurances that their wedding would be unique.”

The helicopter landed at the Holy Family Church on Robinson Road on Saturday, August 14, 1976, and when the couple left the church they boarded the TIA helicopter, flown by Captain Peter Lloyd, to lead a one-of-a-kind motorcade, escorted by police motorcycles, to the Nassau Beach Hotel for the reception. Along the route the lead limousine broadcast the tune “Here Comes the Bride”.

A large crowd had gathered at the church to witness this ‘helicopter wedding’ and Bert and I were hoping for a rush of repeat business. He did get numerous requests

for this type of service, but such a thing never happened again because a notice appeared in Monday’s newspapers pointing out that helicopters, like all other aircraft, were forbidden to land anywhere except on officially recognised airports, unless specific permission were requested, and granted, in advance.

This edict made it impossible to capitalise on a helicopter’s unique ability to land almost anywhere, made it impossible for TIA to operate its helicopter profitably, and continues to restrict all attempts to operate a commercial helicopter service in the Bahamas.

TIA’s Enstrom helicopter had partnered with BASRA to rescue a pilot whose plane had crashed north of Andros, a seaman from an oceangoing ship, who was flown to the Princess Margaret Hospital, and numerous other situations that could only be done by helicopter.

How can you help the Bahamas Humane Society?

V

ery frequently people reach out to me and ask what they can do to help the Bahamas Humane Society. I am always excited to hear those sentiments, but then have to ask the person what kind of help they are comfortable giving us.

Clearly the first, and in many ways the easiest, is a monetary donation, particularly one without strings attached. Though I understand that a cat person may want their dollars to go directly to the cats, it is not always easy to restrict where funds are destined to go.

There are times when we need every penny to go to salaries, and this frequently causes some consternation amongst donors. One hears: “I only want it to go directly to the animals.”

I hear you loud and clear, but how are the animals going to cope if we do not have a staff who clean their cages, feed them, put water in their bowls, take them for walks, and assist people with their adoptions? How will the animals fare without the three experienced vets who check them medically when they arrive at the shelter and monitor their conditions until the day they leave to their new homes?

These dedicated and caring staff of the BHS have homes and families of their own. They need to earn their livings. Without the salaries they receive from the BHS they could not care for themselves or their families.

Along with kennel staff, the BHS has a thrift shop manager, an accountant, vet techs, adoption coordinators, ambulance drivers, cruelty inspectors and a general manager. Every week these people, who are aided in certain

By The Bahamas Humane Society BEN is holding his best pose in order to attract the best adopters to him! At four months, Ben is more than ready for a home of his own, not that he minds sharing space with another dog or pup, but to have his own human(s) would be awesome.

Ben is very playful and loves to socialise. He wouldn’t mind learning how to swim, if you’re a beach-loving sort. And the leash is no trouble, either. Ben is currently included in the BHS dog/puppy adoption special, where pups are half price, and adult dogs are $5. If you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your home, why not come in and meet Ben? If you areas by volunteers, need to be paid.

Salaries are just one area where monetary donations are essential.

Food costs, medication, building repairs, insurance, electricity, communications and vehicles are all part of our enormous overhead. That is where your donation goes.

If you prefer to be a bit more “hands on” with your assistance, we have many areas where we require help. In the office there is always a large amount of information on different animals and their owners that needs to be uploaded, follow-up phone calls to new adoptive families to be made, surgery appointments to be confirmed, membership drives to be organised, telephones to be answered during clinic hours, and so much more.

For those who want to be more “around the animals” there is always dog walking, helping with behaviour issues, spending time with a shy dog, puppy washing, kitten interaction, and getting to know the animals looking for homes. Of course the hands-on volunteers need to spend time with our staff and be prepared to do it “our way” and follow our shelter

During the school holidays the BHS has summer camps, sometimes mini camps at Christmas and Easter. We would have more if we had more help.

The kids need supervision, but by people who love and understand kids, who are fun, who understand how serious being around animals is and can understand why children have to be closely monitored at the shelter.

Our thrift shop has become very successful. We are receiving more and more really nice, high quality items.

Frequently people are prepared to give us large quantities of objects they no longer want, provided we will pack them up and pick them up. We always need helpers for that. Just last week we had a huge amount of items at the Old Fort area. I put a post on Facebook and several people came forward to help. Four hours and five large loads later the thrift shop had a big inventory to go through.

Every November we hold our grand raffle. We desperately need people to be prepared to sit outside a supermarket for a few hours a week during the month to help us increase our street sales. In a perfect world there would be a volunteer in charge of sales in each major area of New Providence and a few in the islands too. We depend on the funds from the raffle to help us keep afloat.

During the year we hold smaller fundraising events and at each one there is always room for help. Suggestions will always be welcome, especially if people could come up with new ideas and actually help organise them. Our work force is small, but dedicated.
