STUDIOS

OBJECTIVE: The Studio began with discovering an original way to fold a buttondown shirt. Once the folding pattern was established we went to the Jim Kimmel Center located in downtown Lubbock (shown right), where we studied the structure. We then applied the folding pattern from the shirts to the structure of the JKC to create a new structural system that in turn created an entirely new building. This being an early studio, program wasn’t emphasized as much as form itself.

Therefore, general programmed areas were created to fulfill the idea of this building transforming into a place where artists can live, work, display, and teach.

DIAGRAMS:

The images on this page show the process that was used to apply the folding technique, I invented with the button down shirt, to the structure of the existing building. This process split the building into five unique structural sections that would later become the separations for the different elements programmed within.

The exploded axon highlights the different program areas that were created by the folding of the buildings structure. I used the three dimensional modelling program FormZ to make the exploded axon shown on this page. The drawing on the left is the full drawing and the rest are zoomed in for better detail.

The FormZ digital model and the laser-cut physical models shown here display the basic structure of the new building. From these views the climbing structure is highlighted, which creates a great space not only for climbing, but also as an inclined seating area for events in the courtyard.

OBJECTIVE: We began this studio by traveling to Roswell, New Mexico, and touring their current UFO Museum which was an old converted movie theater. After the tour we understood the needs of a UFO Museum and picked a small thin site down the street to propose our designs. This studio had a strong emphasis on programming which was addressed thoroughly in the design for the museum. The needs of this museum go beyond gallery space and include a small theater, research library, a small temporary living area for visiting researchers, and a cafe.

The rendering and section shown on this page, display the escalator and elevator tubes that provide vertical transportation throughout the building. The museum tour begins on the top level, reached by the elevator, and continues down through the building via the escalator tubes. These tubes were to give the patron the feeling of being in a spacecraft.

The goal behind the design of the Roswell UFO Museum was to separate the different required function while at the same tame arranging the spaces in a proximity to each other that creates a sensible and desired flow of traffic. The completely public space of the cafe and gift shop is located on the ground floor in direct proximity to the street and the side park. This gives normal pedestrians the oppurtunity to shop and eat at the cafe without any feeling of obligation to enter the museum itself. For those entering the museum, they are taken to the top story, which seperates them from the street level and gives the sense of a real threshold being crossed. The museum has large gallery space availabel for just about any exhibit that they would like to show off. The transportation between the levels is located outside of the used floor space so that it does not use any space that the gallery might need. The research center is located towards the back and is accessed through its own elevator. There are four overnight stay rooms, a large research area, and a lofted library. Also through the reasearch center receptionist area there is access to a theatre where lectures can be taught or movies viewed. The building contains three different functions in one unified envelope.

FACILITY

OBJECTIVE: This studio was a group project to jointly make an olympic swimming training facility. Each person was assigned an event to create a facility for. I was given the 200 meter obstacle which used to be an event but is no longer used. This space is meant to be used as an intense training facility, but can transform to be used for public recreation as well. This studio emphasized structure and even more specifically the roof.

FLOOR PLAN AND USE: The Plan shows the layout of all the elements involved in this training center and how they work together. While not in use for training the center can be used as a lazy river for guests represented by the green line. Below the plan is a diagram of traditional 200 meter obstacle race components compared to what those training here will have to go through.

SECTIONS AND DETAILS:

The sections on this page show how the structural system is tied together. The columns, which are disguised as a “light tube� with a skylight above, support a trussed roof system (shown below) that is masked by a layer of fabric hovering over the training center. As shown in the top section, the training boats are connected to the roof system and can be raised or lowered as needed.

The rendering to the right shows a good view of the climbing platform as well as the bridge that people would use to move to the lounge areas.

PDC OBJECTIVE: To take a Parisian shopping area that is located within a block of buildings, called the Passage Du Caire, and where the pathways join, create a node experience that creates a connection to the North side as well as an identity to revitalize the failing passage retailers. Also, we were to add a retail aspect of our own in an empty space located adjacent to the node. Our concept was to create a node where all passageways come together symmetrically in the vicinity of a restaurant the brings people to the shopping center.

Below is the finished roof plan of the node, which shows how we solved the problem of creating a symmetrical thoroughfare and celebrated junction point within the passage. The Plan shown to the right is of the ground floor and shows the walk-up crepe stand, the indoor/outdoor cafe as well as how the trees create a path that leads to the entrance.

The second floor plan (shown left) reveals the more intimate restaurant/bar area that overlooks the courtyard, node, and passage ways through the shopping center. Below is a FormZ rendering of the project shown from the designed walk-up and entryway.

This view also displays the node and glass roof structure that enhances the passageways throughout by providing an outdoor feel with weather protection.

The Section shown to the right displays the proportions of the hallway and node as well as how the restaurant on the second floor plays off of the opportunity for views by stepping up for the center booths while simultaneously lowering the ceiling for a more intimate feeling.

OBJECTIVE: The Lubbock Post Office was built in the 1930’s and has since undergone two renovations, but is currently sitting without a tenant. Our studio was run by a preservationist who gave us the task of creating a new program and layout for the interior while keeping the exterior and history of the building intact.

To solve this issue I proposed creating a downtown graduate architecture school for Texas Tech; within this program I was able to take the floor plans back to the way they were originally in 1930.

BASEMENT:

The basement has light wells on two of the sides which I thought would be conducive to use as a reading area in a library as well as a few classrooms and a print shop. The basement shop is where the machinery such as the laser cutter and CNC machine would be kept. The service elevator would be used to bring projects to and from the basement shop.

GROUND FLOOR:

The ground floor shop has access to the back of the building and is where most of the wood working and model building materials and machines would be located. The reception area would also house a small graduate administrative staff. The cafe would serve the students, public, and would be a great asset for after hours lectures or presentations.

3RD FLOOR:

The second and third floor layouts are almost identical except where there is a gallery on the third floor, instead there would be classrooms on the second floor. The third floor gallery is the original court room and is one of the few rooms still original to the building. These floors are where the original floor plans come to life and create small studio spaces for the students to work in privacy or small groups.

OBJECTIVE: Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, currently, has a small cancer treatment center. Our task was to add on to this center to create a complete treatment center, using the existing site. My concept was to mimic the experience one would receive when driving up to and entering a resort hotel. This would give the patient a better feeling about their treatment before they even enter the building. This studio emphasized having a successful program where all the spaces worked together and still entertained the main concept.

The site diagram below and Google Earth image to the left show that there is a creek to the south ofinfusion therapy the existing building bordered by many trees on both banks. The main idea behind my center was to capitalize on these views as much as possible, while maintaining an efficient flow of program throughout the building.
