Feeling Thankful at 10 Welcome to our tenth anniversary issue!

It’s hard to believe that it has been a decade since I started cold calling businesses on Village Road in Leland, doing my best to convince them to buy ads in this publication. I’ll admit that it wasn’t easy to get this magazine off the ground. For starters, I was trying to sell ads in something that didn’t yet exist. And then there was the fact that I was just 24 years old and looked like a small child — no grey hair, no aging in the face. Needless to say, it took some convincing to get those first advertisers in this publication, but the hard work paid off.

I am not from the “old Leland,” but I guess it would be safe to say that I have been around long enough at this point to have some local knowledge. When I started this publication, the Highway 17 corridor consisted of five businesses in Waterford and one in Magnolia Greens. Now, what feels like a lifetime later, a lot is changed!

I’m so very thankful for each and every person who put faith in our company. So many people helped get this idea off the ground and turn it into what hopefully is considered a community staple. Thank you to everyone who contributes, reads and especially advertises in this magazine!

In addition to this being our 10th anniversary issue, this issue is also special because it includes our annual real estate section. Here is how it works: Starting on page 56 is the introduction to the 2015 North Brunswick New Homes and Real Estate section. It’s odd, I know, but the page numbers 16

start over with 1 there. Why? Because we take that real estate section out and reprint it into a separate annual publication and distribute it to potential new home buyers in the area.

The regular page numbers continue on page 111. Trust me, this is the only way it can work.

If you can overlook this anomaly with the page numbers, I think you’ll really enjoy this edition. Moving to Wilmington has been a dream come true, and the life I have created for myself has been a blessing beyond words. I enjoy kayaking the Cape Fear, fishing the shores of Carolina Beach and picking up seashells and shark’s teeth wherever I am.

“Spare Me” Bowling Tournament Success

Pants Gala was the most successful in the event’s history. Another bonus was a live auction, conducted during the gala by WECT’s Jon Evans, for an electric, child-sized version of the raffle convertible. It also included a baseball bat and ball, signed by Trot Nixon, and a backpack and gift package from Polka Dot Palm.

Lori Butler had the winning bid of $3,300. Her employer, GE, generously matched her donation.

“All of our sponsors, gala committee members, hospice volunteers and guests had a hand in this year’s gala’s success,” Champion said.

Eight teams of six players competed in the Furever Friends Animal Rescue’s third annual “Spare Me” Crazy Bowling Tournament on August 28 at Thunder Alley in Leland. Team Friends Furever took home the trophy, and Capeside Animal Hospital won the cash as the winners of the 50/50 drawing.

Furever Friends Animal Rescue would like to thank all the teams — Family Dog Naturals -Waterford, Brunswick County Animal Protective Services, Chelsea’s Chicks, Paws for a Cause, RACE Rescue Animals Community Effort, Friends Furever and two teams from Capeside Animal Hospital — for all of their support, for making the night fun-filled, and for their own dedication and effort to helping animals in need.

Election Day at Charter Day School Charter Day School’s Student Government Association (SGA) election process closely mirrors that of our state and nation in hopes that each student will leave middle school with knowledge of, experience with and appreciation for political participation and the democratic process. For the recent election, student candidates campaigned for a month, with some even selecting campaign “staff” including managers and speech writers. In addition to clever slogans, presidential candidates also had to formulate a researched platform and legitimate plans of action, which they presented in speeches to their peers. Charter Day School invited local officials to join these student candidates behind the podium to share their experiences and advice. Leland Mayor Brenda Bozeman and Brunswick County Commissioner Pat Sykes spent the morning at the election event, providing candid insights to the middle school students.

Students voted in their new SGA slate by private, online voting.

Within an hour of polls closing, results were announced as all students gathered around the school’s flagpole. SGA officers for 2015-2016 are as follows: Luke Scacheri, president; Mikey Barcal, vice president; Issa Baggett, treasurer; and Elizabeth Edwards, secretary.

Catherine “Frankie” Beacham of Southport was the winner of Lower Cape Fear Hospice’s Last Chance for White Pants Gala raffle. She won a 2015 Audi Cabriolet convertible from Audi Cape Fear in Wilmington. The winner was announced at the gala on Saturday, August 29. Not only did Beacham drive away with a new car, but Lower Cape Fear Hospice took care of the federal taxes on her win. Only 1,500 raffle tickets were sold. Lower Cape Fear Hospice met its goal and sold all tickets about two weeks prior to the gala. Tickets sold for $100 each.

“Dave Pearce, a LCFH Foundation Trustee and hospice volunteer, sold the winning raffle ticket,” says Lindsey Champion, LCFH development manager. “We wouldn’t have met our goal without the support of our committee members and volunteers who worked hard to sell all of the raffle tickets. Also, we wouldn’t have been able to offer such a fantastic raffle prize without the generosity and support of Audi Cape Fear.”

Charter Day School Archers Compete in World Tournament Middle school archers from Leland’s Charter Day School joined nearly 5,000 peers from across the globe at the Music City Center in Nashville for three days of archery competition. Competitors came from as close by as Canada and as far away as Namibia, providing for all a unique microcosm of international community.

Currently state champions for the sixth year in a row, the Charter Day School team placed 36 of 90 middle school teams in world competition. Individual competition saw eighth grader Luke Scacheri place 76th of 1,110 middle school boys. Teammates Jack Boldt and Levi Lindbert were close behind in this field with ranks of 156th and 163rd, respectively. In the middle school girls division, eighth grader Mikaela Whitman scored an impressive 268 points of a possible 300, ranking her comfortably in the top third of her 959 competitors. eighth grade female archer in state competition this March. The successful team is coached by Art Instructor Daryl Lafave and parent volunteers Terry Boldt and Ashley Lindbert.

National Championship. The national championship, presented by Mercedes-Benz, will make its first visit to Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif.

Competition is through the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). Locally, NASP competitive archery is available to middle school students at Charter Day School in Leland and Columbus Charter School in Whiteville. The schools are members of a family of identical and tuition-free public charter schools that offer a classical curriculum. The family of schools also includes Douglass Academy in Wilmington and South Brunswick Charter School in Southport.

The planned 36-hole championship was cut short to 18 holes after extensive rainfall caused the course to become unplayable.

by Leland Tourism Development Authority and supported by Mercedes-Benz. King defeated local PGA Professional David Thore in a one-hole sudden death playoff, making birdie on the par 5 eighth. They are joined by PGA Professionals Rick Lewallen of Kannapolis, N.C.; Daniel Thore of Reidsville, N.C.; Mitch Adams of Troy, N.C.; Rick Morton of Jacksonville, N.C.; and John Faidley of Winston-Salem, N.C., in qualifying for the 27th Senior PGA Professional National Championship.

Wilmington Hammerheads FC Donates to Battleship North Carolina

Literacy Council’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

July 1 was Battleship and Military Appreciation night at the Wilmington Hammerheads FC home game. Through donations at the ticket window and a silent auction of the exclusive camouflage player jerseys, the Hammerheads presented a check to the Battleship Generations Campaign in the amount of $2,738.78.

Jason Arnold, general manager for Wilmington Hammerheads FC, says, “It is one of the Wilmington Hammerheads FC initiatives to show support to our community. Brunswick County Literacy Council hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 28 at Brunswick Electric’s conference center. Tutors, volunteers and board members were recognized for their valuable contributions to BCLC’s mission to eradicate illiteracy in Brunswick County.

Executive Director Dorothy Hoerr and board member Sue Railing (who has since assumed a new role with BCLC as its interim program director) organized and led the program for the luncheon. President Susan Shook offered words of appreciation to those who tirelessly give of their time, skills, talents and donations on a regular basis throughout the year.

Volunteers also shared their experiences and successes, offering suggestions for ways to maintain and advance BCLC programs and outreaches. One tutor shared how wonderful it was to be part of a nonprofit organization such as BCLC to help a student gain enough confidence to leave a “terrible job” behind and obtain better employment. BCLC’s working plan of action includes addressing several key areas of the cycle of illiteracy, including learning to read, completing educational goals through GED preparation and job foundational work (resumes, interviews and dressing for success). The luncheon menu was made possible by the generous donations of Calabash Deli and BCLC board and staff members. North Brunswick Newcomers Club First 2015 Meeting North Brunswick Newcomers Club (NBNC) kicked off its first meeting for the 2015-16 season on September 18 at the Brunswick Community College, Leland Campus, located at 2050 Enterprise Boulevard in Leland. Featured speakers were Robin Triplett, a retired history teacher from New Hanover County who has lived in Wilmington her entire life, and Felicia Green, the Director of Tourism for Poplar Grove Plantation, one of the oldest surviving peanut plantations in North Carolina. Both speakers provided interesting anecdotes and information about the local area for the club members.

NBNC is a social club that meets each month from September through June. Each meeting features at least one speaker or entertainer. The club searches for programs that will help members become more familiar with the area and its culture, history and lifestyle. At most meetings, speakers from the community talk about special local programs and events. Many speakers describe volunteer opportunities for those looking for an avenue to become involved in their new hometown. Membership dues are $25 per year, per household.

Compass Pointe Raises $25,000 for Disabled Veterans Compass Pointe Veterans Club just raised $25,000 for Chapter 11 of the Disabled American Veterans organization during a Memorial Day Weekend Celebration. This event was held at the Grand Lanai at Compass Pointe in Leland and included a golf cart parade, a flag ceremony, a silent auction, a gala, musical entertainment by Wilmington-based Harbor Towne Fest Band, and a very special visit from The Red Wolves team, an aircraft from HSC-84 Naval Station in Norfolk Virginia that conducted a flyover and acknowledgment of veterans from the air.

Miss Leland-Belville Pageant In the summer of 2009, 9-year-old Teddy Hiatt of Oak Island was visiting his grandfather in Belville, doing what little boys do the best: climbing trees. On this day, a limb broke, causing Teddy to fall. Teddy passed away, and his mother, Heather Skipper, decided to donate his organs so that his memory would live on. A 9-year-old girl got Teddy’s heart of gold. A little boy received some very wise eyes from Teddy.

To honor Teddy, Alecia Davis-Geddings, director of the Miss Leland-Belville Pageant, began the North Brunswick High School Teddy Hiatt Scholarship with Communities In Schools in 2014. The proceeds of the pageant go toward this scholarship.

Participants raise funds all year, and the pageant is held annually each August. This year’s recipient, Nikayla Bellamy, was awarded with a $1,700 NBHS Teddy Hiatt Scholarship. This year, the pageant queens hope to raise $3,000. For more information you can visit: misslelandbelville.webs.com.

Ladies Night Out Purse Bash

Ed Hulser, founding member and steering committee chairperson served with a similar team, the HAL-3 Navy Seawolves, in Vietnam. Hulser initiated the formation of The Compass Pointe Veterans Club, along with other veteran residents in 2014 to provide support for the many residents that are veterans, as well as give back to veterans in the greater Wilmington area.

The Veterans Club chose to support Disabled American Veterans as a way to actively support the greater community and was excited about the difference they are making in so many lives.

The Wilmington chapter of Disabled American Veterans has processed 2,100 claims for veterans and their families and has transported 720 veterans to VA Hospitals in Fayetteville and Durham, and another 120 to various local medical appointments.

Their Benevolence Committee also provides emergency support to veterans and their families by covering utility bills, rent and emergency advances in times of need.

The Compass Pointe Veterans Club currently has 47 members and is growing every day. This fundraiser was the second of its kind.

A benefit for North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce, the Ladies Night Out Purse Bash at 101 Stone Chimney Place was a big hit on July 23. With a drawing held every 10 minutes, lots of local ladies walked away with purses by Coach, Michael Kors and Kate Spade as well as gift certificates from local jewelers, salons and spas. Four hundred people enjoyed the giveaways plus dinner and a silent auction. Lori Harris did a fantastic job as mistress of ceremonies for the new chamber fundraiser.

OrthoWilmington Adds a Nurse Practitioner The region’s comprehensive center for orthopaedic care, OrthoWilmington, has expanded its staff with an additional certified nurse practitioner, bringing their medical staff to 23 physicians, 19 physician assistants and four nurse practitioners. A graduate of Vanderbilt University’s master of science in nursing program, Susan Sobel is a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP). She joins the care team of Mark D. Foster, MD, specializing in spine cases, conditions of the foot and ankle, and general orthopaedics. “Susan is a highly skilled, compassionate medical professional whose care of our patients will be well-received,” says OrthoWilmington Chief Executive Officer Stephen L. DeBiasi, CMPE, FACHE. “We welcome her to our group, and are made even stronger with her aboard.” Susan will treat patients in New Hanover and Brunswick county offices.

“Any community that wants to have economic development today must have an airport,” stated Air Wilmington owner Bill Cherry at the groundbreaking event. “New Hanover County and Wilmington are extremely lucky in that not only do we have a physically large airport, but also good commercial airline service, an international terminal to accommodate our international traffic and a very active and aggressive airport management and authority. Air Wilmington’s role as a FBO is to support all of the entities that use the airport, such as the airlines, military and general aviation traffic.”

Leland Area Rotary Installation

OrthoWilmington offers patients 47 providers in 13 physician and therapy offices throughout southeastern North Carolina. Many of the physicians are board-certified orthopaedic surgeons and pain management specialists who are fellowship trained in a variety of orthopaedic specialties, including spine, sports medicine, hip and knee joint reconstruction and revision, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, trauma, as well as pain management.

The passing of the gavel from 2014-15 President Michael Braddock to 2015-16 President Sabrena Reinhardt took place on June 18. District Communications Officer Lin Kelly performed the installation.

Rotary’s Assistant Governor David Morgan was also in attendance. Air Wilmington Breaks Ground on $3 Million Hangar

Air Wilmington, ILM’s fixed base operator (FBO), recently broke ground on the largest fully enclosed hangar at ILM, measuring 21,000 square feet and adding a $3 million in capital investment. The hangar will be located at Air Wilmington and will house larger, corporate aircraft. It was designed and will be built by local construction company Thomas Construction Group, LLC.

Wine & Design of Leland Changes Ownership

Jennifer Marsh-Colby, who owns and operates the Warwick, N.Y., Wine & Design, has taken ownership of the Leland studio from Claudia Wooten Outlaw and Kathleen Dunnigan. Outlaw had owned the Wilmington studio since 2012 and opened the Leland location at the end of 2014. Marsh-Colby and her husband have been considering relocating to the North Carolina coast for several years and after a discussion with Outlaw, Marsh-Colby saw the Leland studio as a great opportunity.

Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Awards $120,000 to Feast Down East Trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation have awarded a grant to Feast Down East to support the organization’s work of connecting low-resourced farmers to markets and other partners in an effort to keep local food dollars in southeastern North Carolina and to build local and regional wealth.

Feast Down East was founded in response to growing poverty rates and massive job loss in the region’s agricultural and manufacturing sectors. The organization is developing a strong and fair local food ecosystem by assisting farmers in identifying new markets, cultivating innovative partnerships, and providing educational opportunities on crop seasons, sustainable practices, and marketing techniques, as well as enhancing food security by distributing healthy, fresh food to low-income communities.

Smith Reynolds Foundation supports innovative organizations that are finding new ways to increase economic opportunities, build community wealth and foster collaboration,” says Leslie Winner, executive director of the Z. Lemonade Sales Benefit Animal Rescue Group Siblings and avid animal lovers Bella and Mason Hocker spent six hours selling lemonade during the July Fourth festivities in Southport, raising $101.09. The young entrepreneurs wanted to give the proceeds to an animal rescue group, but needed help doing so. Thanks to the efforts of Bridgett Rowley, chairman of Canines and Coutours and founder of Scarlett’s Rescue, a meeting was arranged between the Hocker family and Furever Friends Animal Rescue. Sharon Smith, one of the Furever Friends founders and director of Foster & Adoption, accepted the donation assisted by pups Rhett Butler and Scarlett Rowley. Rhett was a former FFAR rescue and Scarlett a rescue from R.A.C.E. Furever Friends is so very grateful for the donation and thanks Bella, Mason and their awesome parents for their generosity and efforts. The funds will be used to provide care and buy medical supplies.

Novant Health Expands Services to Leland On July 15 Novant Health Oceanside Family Medicine will open a new clinic location in Leland. The office will be located at Waterford Medical Plaza, 509 Olde Waterford Way, Suite 200. Staff began scheduling appointments for the new clinic June 15. The Leland clinic is the fourth Novant Health Oceanside Family Medicine location and will be staffed by Justin Asbury, D.O, previously of Novant Health Oceanside Family Medicine in Bolivia, and Tori Asbury, D.O., previously of Novant Health Oceanside Family Medicine in Southport. Communities In Schools Benefit Gala for Children For the 14th year, Community In Schools of Brunswick County will hold its CIS Benefit Gala for Children to further its mission of supporting local students in a multitude of ways.

Scheduled for November 5 at 6 pm at Sea Trail Conference Center in Sunset Beach, the black-tie gala will include a decadent tasting of the best foods of Brunswick County provided by the area’s finest chefs. Restaurants represented at the gala will include Angelo’s Pizzeria & Bistro, Art Catering and Events, The Purple Onion, Backstreet Café, Big Al’s Slam Dunk BBQ, Burney’s Bakery, Check 6 Brewery, Magnolia’s Lounge at Sea Trail, Papa John’s Pizza, Ports of Call, Yacht Basin Eatery and Coastal Catering & Events, and more are expected. The night will also offer live music by the Band of Oz, live and silent auctions, and raffles. Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David will be the evening’s host. New Facility Coming for Paws Place Paws Place Inc., a nonprofit, no-kill dog rescue, is one step closer to its goal of having a shelter for the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of dogs.

The organization recently purchased land at 242 George II Highway in Winnabow for its new shelter. Proposed construction plans call for a 6,000-square-foot service facility providing a combination of indoor and outdoor kennels, an exercise yard and rooms for adoption, grooming, laundry and veterinary examinations.

Established in 1999 Paws Place is currently at 3701 E. Boiling Spring Road with 43 covered outdoor kennels. The organization has been unable to build an indoor facility on the current property due to poor soil quality and setback requirements under Brunswick County UDO Standards.

“For the past 15 years we have operated at our current location, providing shelter, care and rehabilitation for countless rescue dogs,” says George Zimmerman, board member and project manager for Paws Place. “Faced with the critical need to bring the dogs and caregivers into an enclosed facility that would provide protection from wind, rain, potential hurricanes and extreme heat and cold, we decided to move the kennel. We are so happy to find a new location that keeps us in Winnabow, and will be much easier for adopters and volunteers to access.”

2015 North Carolina Rice Festival Scholarship Pageant The second annual North Carolina Rice Festival was held at the Brunswick Riverwalk in Belville. The festival celebrates the region’s rice growing history and continued rice production. Along with the pageant, the festival included rice cooking contests, arts and crafts, commercial vendors and a children’s zone.

Angie Smock, Wilmington native, was the Mistress of Ceremonies, and judges for the pageant were Dana Fisher, Katie Pace, Sonya Fields and Michelle Fisher. All contestants of the pageant took part in personal interviews with the judges and competed in a round of formal evening wear.

The winners of the Chilled & Grilled Competition were:

The Rotary Club of South Brunswick Islands presented the third annual Chilled & Grilled, Brunswick County’s food and wine festival, on September 16. The event raised more than $10,000 for scholarships and other projects to benefit the youth of Brunswick County. Hundreds of guests packed the Dinah E. Gore Center at Brunswick Community College to sample the fare of the 22 restaurants that competed in three main categories of appetizers, entrees and desserts. Guests voted on the best in each category as well as a People’s Choice and Best Presentation Award. They also enjoyed the music of singer-songwriter Tain Collins.

Leaving Leland What It’s Like to Live There, What It’s Like to Leave There

Recently, our little family moved from Leland after living there for five years.

It was not an easy decision, but our lives had changed since we’d first settled there. The need to get closer to work and relatives led us “back across the river” to Hampstead in Pender County.

What brought us to Leland in the first place? Well, we had outgrown the small Ogden house that my wife had 42

purchased before we met and we wanted to expand our family and square footage.

When considering where we wanted to live back then, we knew we wanted a neighborhood with originality, established trees and ample greenery, in a community with a rural feel, but with proximity to downtown and all the diversions that Wilmington can provide.

Leland was an obvious choice. Five years later, I can say that Leland delivered on its early promise and appeal.

As someone who lived in North Brunswick County for a good chunk of time, I feel like I’m entitled to write a review of what it’s like to live there. But rather than providing a precise drilldown into a particular place, my aim is to cover the community in its entirety with one thick brush stroke. So what follows is a casual guide to Leland from a one-time local who tried to wring it out for all it was worth.

Location Any self-proclaimed review worth its salt has to reflect on the location of a place. What features make it unique?

Does its geography add to its appeal?

Not that a town can help it, but is its placement a burden? The placement of Leland on the map made it very convenient to Wilmington, highways 17 and 74/76, and was a nice starting block for a westward push to Interstate 95 and beyond. My family is from the mountains and upstate South Carolina, so it was always easy to head off to see loved ones. It is also a perfect hub to branch out on daytrips in any location — Oak Island, Southport, Jones Lake and many other superb destinations are less than an hour’s drive away.

But the beauty of the Leland community is that you don’t really need to go anywhere to connect to the landscape.

Being right on the Brunswick River and other surrounding creeks and tributaries, there are countless natural settings that are undeveloped and underexplored.

My kids, Foster and Alice Wren, adored the Brunswick River Park — which they dubbed the “blue park” because of the blue playground equipment — and we spent many days exploring the riverbank at low tide, tossing sticks and rocks into the water, watching fiddler crabs scuttle across their holes, welcoming and sending off boaters and fishermen at the open launch ramp. It’s hard to visualize what the area will look like with a boardwalk and shops, but it’s no wonder Belville town planners want to use it as more of a recreational and commercial destination. For all the future kids with their throwing sticks and sense of play and discovery, let’s hope the development doesn’t bury all of that wonderful nature.

We also spent a lot of time walking the trails at the Brunswick Nature Park southbound down Highway 133 along Town Creek. This is an exceptionally imagined and maintained multi-use park that always provided a wild

respite. Both of my kids got a taste for hiking out there, and we have many sweet shared memories of sitting in trail dirt to have a snack, stopping to observe bugs, listen to birdcalls and feel time creep by with nothing pressing to do and nowhere really to be. There is much to explore there and I was always glad to see other locals

taking advantage of the outside offerings of the area.

A park that was always remarkably devoid of people whenever we visited is Ev-Henwood Nature Preserve, 175 sprawling acres of fields, trails and picnic space down Highway 17 S. near Winnabow. There is a feeling of serene abandonment at Ev-Henwood, Fall 2015

like the park used to be more of a destination and has been left behind and nature is reclaiming the landscape one vine at a time.

Long-owned by Troy Henry and his forebears, the land was acquired by UNC Wilmington in 1991 and is an ideal classroom for the study of local nature and history. Out in the woods of Ev-Henwood sit two derelict houses of unknown origin that will make you freeze in your tracks when you see them. They are creepy and look like a discarded set from a horror movie. Foster and I loved to gaze up into the domestic ruin and ponder what was in those old dwellings. The properties are giving way to all sorts of creepers and ivies, and the whirr of the cicadas and untold numbers of leg-rubbing insects out there in the woods are all that you can hear.

Our other local destination was the manmade pond off 74/76, between the

Leland exits where the power lines enter the woods. According to some guys at the fire department, soil was provided by a local property owner to build the highway and the resulting hole was filled with water to create the hidden pond. We enjoyed walking through the woods behind Sue Circle, heading down highways 74/76, finding discarded treasure amid the roadway litter, and cutting back through the woods at a rickety-old abandoned deer stand to the pond. My son must’ve thrown a thousand pine cones into the pond over the years, and his climb through the stages of boyhood can be marked with iPhone pictures taken along the banks of that random body of water.

The flip side to having a great location is that so many people want to be there, and in North Brunswick County this is manifested in really

painful traffic. Believe me, I sat in countless traffic jams and inched through many a merge to and from Leland. And while I won’t be there to experience the improvements created by widening the causeway, extending the bypass and whatever the cloverleaf shaped thing is designed to do, I am sincerely happy that those patient and long-suffering people will get relief in the very near future.

Service In a given community, service can mean a lot of things. I’ve come to look at it this way: How do citizens serve their fellow man? What do they do for each other? On a daily basis, I was fond of the people that I came into contact with around Leland. The staff at the Leland Library were like family to me during a four-month stint of Fall 2015

unemployment. When I came in to scan for jobs, print up résumés and check out books and DVDs for my kids, their kindness buoyed my optimism. The gang at Ace Hardware would patiently and non-condescendingly accept the random broken parts of my house that I would hand them, look at my cell phone pictures and help me figure out how to pull off whatever oddball repair needed to be done. They graciously pointed me in the right direction and didn’t treat me like the clueless hack that I am.

Being a militant tree hugger, I bring my own bags to the grocery store. This activity is more common in progressive San Francisco markets than in the Leland Food Lion, but all of the cashiers and bagboys saw me coming and were always accommodating. They were quick to say a kind word and would let me bag along even at the risk of creating a logjam of customers behind me.

I probably had a beer at every bar in town and appreciate all of the men and women who poured them. Having two small kids with wild tendencies, we ordered a lot of takeout rather than dining in and having our children terrorize people out for a quiet dinner.

We would call ahead and it was always my responsibility to go pick up the food. I would invariably leave the house early enough to have to wait a few minutes at the restaurant, giving me time to have a beer and decompress.

These were always golden moments — whether at PT’s, Half Time, Macgrooders or San Felipe — and I will miss all of those twilight brews while kind strangers bagged our food somewhere in the galley.

Then you have the cashiers at the Kickin’ Mule, where I would go to pick up a 40 of High Life or six-pack of suds for my wife and me to split after yard work — those guys were always pleasant and nice. And the white haired man who ran the produce stand just past the Sturgeon Creek Bridge off of Village Road, who has since passed and left that small dusty parking lot a ghostly place. I miss him.

It goes beyond workplace customer service with a paycheck or tip on the line — it’s about common decency when no one is looking and all pretense and obligation is stripped away. There were countless other places that deserve mention, and Leland excelled at a particular brand of casual professionalism.

Ambiance Finally, ambiance and atmosphere are vital to the enjoyment of any place — you have to plug into the overall mood of a place and make a connection. I think Leland delivered there as well. It’s lush and verdant, with long stretches of roadside that are undeveloped, and I think the open terrain creates a slow pace. Apart from rush hour, no one seems to be in much of a hurry. Outsiders may think it’s too small, but it’s really a great combination of town and country, and that’s the prevailing vibe.

People around Leland tend to share the same easy-going disposition, like they’ve not only synchronized their watches but also tapped in to the same spiritual grid. There’s a connectivity between people that’s hard to ignore.

We saw the community spirit up close through organized athletics. Foster had his first two sports team experiences in Leland — soccer when he was 4 and tee-ball when he was 6. I spent a lot of time on the sidelines of Northwest District Park and infields of Leland Community Park listening to the

coaches, parents and kids and how everyone related to each other. I never saw any hooligans or redneck dads swinging it out in the bleachers. It was amicable; we were all there so our kids could learn sports, teamwork, commitment and discipline.

What may be most telling about a place are the neighbors, the people who have ended up at the same place as you.

The neighbors we had in the quiet subdivision of Sue Circle were a fine lot.

We slowly marched the circle together every Halloween, the kids growing a bit each year, their costumes revealing the latest trending cartoon. On Fourths of July we’d stand out in our yards and watch the toddlers run with sparklers and hold their ears when the fireworks screamed and shot out of their 2-liter silos. Fire pits, cook outs, snow days, bonding over small things like weed control. What makes it extra special and difficult to drive away from all this is the fact that our old place in Leland is the foundation for Foster and Alice Wren, everything that comes after this is rooted firmly in Brunswick County.

All of these memories and places are just a sampling, merely small nibbles in a banquet feast. Each bite is delicious but may get lost in the surrounding spread.

And what may appeal to me may not appeal to you and that’s the beauty of a sumptuous array of offerings. Leland was a big meal and I’m grateful we had a chance to savor it all. n

Behind the business

The Perfect Fit

At BodyTherapy Inc., Sara and Ryan Godfrey merge massage therapy and physical therapy with their love of Leland.

When Sara Godfrey

was assigned the task of recruiting a PRN (as needed) physical therapist for the Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehab Center in Bladen County a few years ago, the trim and athletic New York native had no idea what she was in for.

“What are the chances of meeting your soul mate on the job in 48

Elizabethtown, N.C.?” she asks. “And a fellow New Yorker at that.”

Fortune winked that day, and Dr. Ryan Godfrey happened to be working at the outpatient clinic when Sara walked in. The two began to chat. “It was really magnetic,” she says.

Sara was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and moved to New Jersey to attend the

Institute for Therapeutic Massage in Brownsville to become a Licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist (LMBT). She then obtained her Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) license. Warmer weather called her, so she followed her parents, Jack and Kathy Henderson, to Leland in 2010.

Meanwhile, Ryan, a native of Holland Patent, N.Y., had attended the University at Buffalo for a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. The last part of his residency was scheduled in Fayetteville, N.C., in 2009 at the Cape Fear Valley Health System. He later transferred to Elizabethtown to an outpatient clinic.

“I had a full-time job and a part-time job up in Fayetteville,” he says. “The last thing I needed was another job at that time. But Sara walked in the door.

I said, ‘Maybe I’ll think about it.’”

That was in December 2011. They were nearly inseparable from that moment forward and were married in April 2013 at the old Angel Oak in downtown Charleston in an intimate family gathering.

Ryan continued to work in Elizabethtown, and Sara opened her own massage therapy business, BodyTherapy, Inc., in 2013, renting a room at North Brunswick Chiropractic and Acupuncture. She also experimented with shea butter and other natural ingredients and developed an all-natural line of lip balm, cream and sunscreen that she sells online.

The goal-oriented couple, whose very presence exudes a joie de vivre, developed a five-year plan to open a new private clinic to provide both massage therapy and physical therapy in one facility. That plan was accelerated to a year and a half.

“We had looked at several properties in Wilmington that just didn’t work out,” Ryan says. “When this Leland location came available, it was perfect.”

“We’ve been dreaming about it ever since we met,” Sara adds. “So hard to believe it is really here.”

One of the best parts of owning their own business is that they have total control.

“Working in an insurance-dictated medical system is very difficult,” Ryan says.

The private Leland Clinic will be cash based, no insurance required or accepted, and patients don’t need a doctor’s referral to visit.

“Of course, if we see that a client has a fracture, we will certainly refer to an ortho,” says Sara. “But we can offer an alternative to injury recovery without medication or surgery.”

The new BodyTherapy clinic in Waterford Station is a 900-square-foot space with two treatment rooms and one clinic room. Sara has a space for massage and personal training, and Ryan has two rooms, one for assessment and one for physical therapy treatment.

Sara and Ryan agree that it is unique to offer both massage therapy and physical therapy in the same facility.

“We are the only one in the region to provide both,” Ryan says. “The therapies share common modalities.

They really complement each other, but it is not common to find them offered in the same facility.”

Sara’s training and experience is in medical massage.

“My deep tissue work is less spa and more therapy,” she says. She is at the new clinic full time, and Ryan is working part time only a few evenings a week as he is working as a PRN again. For now, service is by appointment only and Sara averages a three-week waiting list.

Ryan is focusing on performance training, injury recovery, corrective exercise and running analysis. Their ideal work is in recreational strength and conditioning for weekend warriors and athletes combined.

“Leland is such an active community,” says Sara. “Almost everyone here is fit and active and wants to take a part in their health and wellness. They want to ride bikes and golf and play pickleball.

They want to play!”

Ryan is playfully quick to point out the downside to all that activity, though. “There are so many injuries in pickleball,” he says. “Yes, we can help to prevent pickleball injuries!”

The couple is adamant about one issue: No one should live with chronic pain.

“We know from experience that most injuries are fixable in most cases without surgery,” Ryan says.

“We are a very reactive society, we go to the doctor when we feel bad, but there are so many techniques that we can use to train your muscles to function more appropriately for an active lifestyle.”

The Godfreys are the picture of perfect health and fitness. Ryan ran his first half marathon last spring in Wrightsville Beach. “He did so well for a first timer,” Sara says. “He finished 105 out of 1,800!”

“I felt really good at the finish line,” Ryan adds. “I felt like I could keep running.” He felt so good, in fact, that the next day he signed up for the full marathon at Wrightsville Beach next spring.

Ryan attributes his success to proper training for the event — about 12 weeks of intense running and conditioning — and knowing proper techniques. Halfway through that

intense training, he felt the wear on his knees and knew he needed to do something different. He did some research and came across the book Ready to Run by Dr. Kelly Starrett, a fellow physical therapist.

“I put a lot of time into mobilizing my joints and applying different

strategies of outside-the-box exercises,” he says. “These were specific techniques that are very effective.”

Sara was really impressed with the success. “Ryan was running better and more importantly he was feeling better,” she says.

Sara works out four to five days a week doing Cross Fit, yoga and Pilates.

Leland life is keeping the active couple so busy these days, they barely have time for their two “very spoiled cats” Murray and Stella.

“Leland is really attractive to us because it has everything we want right here,” Sara says. “When I got here I didn’t really know if I would stay, but, wow, it is a perfect place to live. I love it.”

“Yes,” Ryan agrees. “For us, Leland is the perfect place to live and work.”

On the Menu: Winter Squash

Before the leaves even fall off the trees

we are bombarded with photos of Thanksgiving tables and cornucopias overflowing with a bountiful variety of fruits and vegetables. Among those are usually the acorn and butternut squashes.

An acorn squash resembles an acorn shape and has yelloworange-green flesh with a sweet but peppery flavor. You see it in the produce section of the grocery store.

Acorn squash is a great source of vitamin C, providing up to 20 percent of the recommended daily allowance in just a half-cup of cooked squash. Rich in potassium, it plays a vital role in muscle contraction and maintaining the body’s water balance.

In my opinion, the acorn squash is kind of like a pumpkin meets an apple.

Although a fruit, the butternut squash looks similar to an oblong pumpkin with a bright orange fleshy pulp and yellowish skin. The orange inner pigment is due to a certain antioxidant called beta-carotene, which is good for you.

Butternut squash has a sweet, nutty flavor. This squash is an excellent source of potassium, bringing in even more than a banana. It is also high in vitamin A, which is linked to keeping hair and skin healthy.

To me, butternut squash is like a pumpkin meeting a sweet potato. Baking a butternut squash with aromatics reminiscent of fall is a rich addition to any turkey or roast.

Try my tasty takes on goldenly delicious baked acorn squash and butternut squash.

Baked Acorn Squash Serves 2

1 acorn squash olive oil 2 tbsp butter 2 tbsp bourbon 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp soy sauce juice of half a lemon 1½ tsp sugar ¼ tsp thyme salt and pepper

Baked Butternut Squash Serves 2

1 butternut squash olive oil 2 cloves of garlic 2 tbsp butter 2 tbsp sherry vinegar 1½ tsp honey ¼ tsp ground sage ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp brown sugar dash of salt 2 sprigs of rosemary

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut the squash in half. With a spoon, scrape out inner webbing and seeds and toss out.

Rub the cut side with extra virgin olive oil and place on baking sheet face down. Bake for 10 minutes.

Take out of the oven and flip over – now use it like a bowl.

Blend the butter, bourbon, Worcestershire, soy and lemon and divide among the two halves. Sprinkle each squash half with half of the sugar, thyme, salt and pepper.

Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, prick with a fork, and spoon the collected liquid mixture around flesh. Bake an additional 35 minutes at 400 degrees. Enjoy!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Cut the squash in half lengthwise. With a spoon, scrape out the inner webbing and seeds and toss out.

Take out of the oven and flip the squash over – now use it like a bowl. Put one roasted garlic clove and half of the butter and sherry in each half, then drizzle each squash half with half of the honey.

Combine the sage, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt and sprinkle over the two halves. Lay a sprig of rosemary on top of each. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Take out and prick with a fork. Spoon the collected liquid mixture around flesh. Bake an additional 35 minutes at 400 degrees. Enjoy! n

f you haven’t stopped by to see Town Creek Park’s new look, it’s well worth the trip. The park was closed for about a year and a half while it received an approximately $5 million, much-needed renovation, and the result is impressive.

In Winnabow off U.S. Highway 17 N., Town Creek Park has been in existence for more than 20 years.

It is a popular outdoor destination for local residents, as well as a greatly appreciated rest stop for those passing through.

In 2009 Brunswick County Parks and Recreation created an improvement plan for the county’s entire park system.

Town Creek Park was one of the parks on the list that was due for a facelift, in part due to its age, the growing needs of the local community and the necessity for it to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

“This was the first park in line for renovation,” says Melinda Johnson, CPRP Marketing and Community Events Coordinator for Brunswick County Parks and Recreation.

“Because of the age of the park, many of the existing facilities were extremely outdated, and as I like to say, ‘well loved’ by the community and were often used by our department, as well as used by local leagues and citizens.”

Once Town Creek Park was targeted for improvements, the next steps involved the set-up of a steering committee, eliciting public input (through community meetings, surveys and questionnaires) and, finally, creating a master plan.

The county chose McGill and Associates as the main consultant for the engineering and design of the park. Along with the help of various companies, the Brunswick County Operations Service and the parks department, the Master Plan became a reality.

The renovations consist of upgrades to existing structures, along with the relocation of various features and

the construction of new additions. The design includes various athletic fields and activities facilities while preserving natural areas for picnicking, nature loving or simply going for a stroll.

To the left of the entrance are two newly surfaced and improved tennis courts (with one of the courts lined for pickle ball, which is growing in popularity within the community).

There have also been upgrades to a traditional playground, the expanded basketball courts and a large community center.

Conveniently located at the heart of the park, this much-used community building nearly doubled in size to 5,200 square feet. It holds public meeting areas, a kitchen, bathrooms and storage space.

Directly to the right of the entrance are two new multi-purpose fields that can be used for soccer and football. The soccer field has the ability to support tournaments, and the football field is ready for practices and games. To help with usability, the fields are equipped with lighting, bleachers and a concession/restroom building.

Adjacent to these athletic fields is an adventure playground with a rubber play surface, offering fun and discovery for varying levels of ability. A covered picnic shelter, landscaping and accessible sidewalks surround the space.

To the south in a unique pinwheel design is a baseball/ softball complex consisting of five fields. Two of the diamonds are 300-foot fields, and the other three fields are 200foot fields. Two of those have grass that meets Little League play standards. At the center of the complex is a two-story building that houses the concession stand, restrooms and the press box. Of course, no ball facility is complete without new dug outs, batting cages, bull pens and storage space for all of that gear. Ample parking is provided for large events and

tournaments. Additionally, a circled drop-off/pick-up lane is conveniently placed at the front of the diamond facility.

To the west of the complex is a new maintenance building to be utilized by park staff. Recycling and waste containers are aptly located for park use. An efficient connector path to Town Creek Elementary School is found south of the ball fields.

“The original park was 34 acres,” says Johnson. “We were able to work with Town Creek Elementary School and the Brunswick County School Board to obtain an additional 10 acres to connect the park with the school in the hopes that the school would be able to use the facility as well as the public, serving a dual purpose.”

For dog lovers, the northeast corner of the site features a dog park with two fenced-in areas, trees and a handy water spigot for filling water bowls.

A nature trail with fitness stations is available for those wanting to get in a bit of outdoor exercise. Each station holds exercise machines and equipment.

The trail continues around a pond and along the perimeter of the entire park, for a total of 7,300 feet (or a little over a mile) of 8-foot-wide walking trails. This area 60

offers plenty of natural, individual picnic areas and a large shelter surrounded by a tall pine grove. The shuffle board and bocce ball courts were relocated to this more serene and shaded space.

“I believe the renovations to this park will serve the residents of Brunswick County for years to come,” says Johnson. “Brunswick County is ever evolving and growing to meet the needs of its citizens. Brunswick County Parks and Recreation is thankful for the support of the community, the Brunswick County Commissioners, the Brunswick County government and everyone involved in making these projects a success.” n

Five Tips for Settling into Your New Home Moving is a stressful task. While it’s unlikely that anyone will ever actually enjoy it, there are ways to make it more tolerable. Whether you are moving this season or planning for a move in the near future, consider these helpful tips on packing up, moving out and settling in without a hitch.

1. Make a list. Before you start packing, it’s important, if possible, to visit your new home with a tape measure. Carefully measure and take note of the square footage and dimensions of every room in your new home. Do the same with any existing appliances and furniture you plan on relocating to your new home to ensure that everything fits through the door and in the space. If you aren’t able to visit before moving in, ask your broker or real estate agent to measure for you.

2. Pack strategically, unpack easily.

Pack and label items by category, such as dishes, winter clothes and books, or by appropriate area, such as bedroom, kitchen and living room. To limit damage, be sure to pack fragile and

valuable items carefully with padded packaging, and be sure to mark fragile items clearly for your movers. To save even more hassle, pack a couple of boxes of essential items specifically for the first night in your new home. You’ll thank yourself when items such as cleaning supplies, fresh linens and a coffeepot are right at your fingertips. Staying organized is the key to avoiding stress!

3. Find savings and convenience in new technology. Moving electronics can be a nightmare, especially with all the rewiring that’s involved. That’s why it’s a good time to buy modern, customizable electronics that require less wiring. For example, rather than choosing hard-wired surround-sound speakers, select a wireless speaker and TV surroundsound system like LG’s Music Flow. It offers a range of speakers and soundbars that you can mix and match to create a customized and easy-to-use home audio system. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Google Cast built in, systems like this let you can stream

4. Share your new address. Update your employer, bank, school, doctors, pharmacist and credit card company with your new address as early as possible. Be sure to call your electric, cable and Internet companies to swap your address, and inquire about any potential changes in your service. Sign up for USPS mail forwarding to ensure all of your mail reaches you in a timely manner. And don’t forget to keep your friends and family in the loop!

5. Upgrade your appliances. If you’re not planning to bring your current appliances to your new home, be sure to look for upgrade to new ENERGY STAR appliances with the latest technologies that can help you save on your electric bill, too.

Tips for Moving with Pets Utilities switched, moving truck reserved, boxes packed — as you work through your moving checklist, are you forgetting something? Have you taken steps to make the move as easy as possible for the family pet? Penske Truck Rental offers some pet-friendly moving tips to make the transition go as smoothly as possible for everyone in the family, including the four-legged members.

1. ID your animals. Pets can get lost and confused during a move. If a pet escapes from a carrier or hotel room during a stopover, you want to be sure you’ve taken steps to help increase the chance that the lost pet can be returned to you.

Microchip your cat or dog before you move. While animal shelters and veterinarians are most often equipped to detect and read microchips, the average Good Samaritan is not. So be sure to also have your pet wear a collar with an ID tag that includes his or her name and your mobile phone number.

If the worst does happen and your pet gets lost during your move, notify animal shelters and veterinarian offices in your former hometown and in the area where your pet got lost.

2. Prepare for health needs. If your pet is on medication, don’t pack it away until you are ready to get in the car for the move. Likewise, keep his or her food for the last minute and keep enough of it with you so you don’t have to feed your pet an unfamiliar diet during the move. Strange food can upset the animal’s tummy during an already stressful time. Additionally, keep at least an extra week’s supply of food and medications in your travel kit, in case your belongings get delayed in transit.

Get your pet a checkup before moving day so you’ll be aware of any changes in health that could affect his or her ability to travel easily.

3. Contain your pet while you’re packing and loading.

Dogs and cats may both be tempted to chew on boxes and packing material, and they could choke on materials or get sick if they swallow something they shouldn’t. While you’re filling boxes, try to keep pets away from your packing area. If you’re packing in stages over several days, be sure to clean up and store any packing material from day to day so pets don’t have access to it.

To minimize the risk of a pet getting hurt, underfoot or lost while you’re packing, confine him to a small room such as a bathroom or closet while your furniture and boxes are being packed on the truck. Leave the pet with water and some food. Post a note on the door of the room alerting movers that a pet is confined there so they don’t open the door.

4. Prepare for travel. Before moving day, take your pet for short rides — especially if you have a pet that’s not used to being in the car.

You may discover that your cat suffers from motion sickness or that your dog prefers the security of riding in a crate rather than just a travel harness. Knowing how your pet reacts to travel can help you and your vet plan a course of action for minimizing travel stress, such as sedation or more frequent breaks in the trip.

The day of your move, transport your pet in your own car or in the cab of the rented moving truck you’ll be driving. Never put a pet in the back of any moving truck where they could get hurt, become sick or be exposed to uncomfortable temperatures. Keep plenty of food and water available, and consider starting your pet’s ride with an empty stomach so he or she will be

your pet in a small room while you unload the truck. Once everything is in place, you can let him out to explore.

Your new home will look and feel different to your dog or cat, but the familiar scent of your belongings will help him adjust quickly.

Whether they escaped the frigid winters of the north in retirement, moved to the area for work or grew up here and decided to stay, there are thousands of people who are willing to sing the praises of Leland and North Brunswick County. We tracked down a few them and asked them where they came from and why they chose to live here.

Where did you live before relocating to southeastern N.C.? Ellen was born in Baltimore, MD, and Jean-Paul in Portland, ME. We moved from Montgomery Village, MD, to Leland after our retirement.

Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? Like most northerners, we wanted to get away from the cold winter weather and snow, find a better tax haven, be near the beaches and be within driving distance of our five-plus grandchildren.

What community did you decide to move to and why?

After much research of four communities within the greater Leland area, we picked Compass Pointe. The size of the community, the amenities already in place and those anticipated, being gated thereby allowing golf carts, and the friendliness of the neighborhoods all made Compass Pointe the right choice for us. It’s always a vacation day here!

Why Leland? The proximity to Wilmington with all its eateries, theater groups, superior hospital system and highly regarded doctors, educational facilities, and historical/ tourist attractions … all “about 20 minutes away” made Leland an easy choice. The beaches found in Brunswick and nearby New Hanover counties were a definite plus. The 30+ golf courses in those counties also made Leland a good centralized location.

How long have you lived here? Surprisingly, we only have been here since early June of 2014 but it seems like so much longer. We credit that to this now being “home” for us with so many new friends, activities within and outside Compass Pointe, and how much our children and grandchildren like where we live.

Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? Horizon Homes with Robin Hackney as the builder was our final choice, again after much research.

Robin, along with her husband Deans and building supervisor allowed us to make major changes to her original design (and she keeps making tweaks with each new build of our Reserve model). Most importantly, we never felt “nickeled and dimed” with changes in the original design and selections. Her scheduling was superior (approximately 90 days!) and the follow-up with minor fixes made our whole experience with Horizon Homes first class. How many new homebuyers can say that they hired a builder and ended up with a friend? We can!

What’s your favorite thing about southeastern N.C.?

That is one tough question, but we would have to say the overall ambiance, civility and “homey” feeling makes us new North Carolinians.

Where did you live before relocating to southeastern N.C.? New Rochelle, NY Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? We wanted an easier lifestyle in a better climate with great beaches and almost year-round golf.

What community did you decide to move to and why?

We chose Compass Pointe because we immediately felt comfortable with the developer’s vision and we were looking for a golf course community.

Why Leland? We like its proximity to Wilmington, the airport and the hospital and its easy access to the beaches.

How long have you lived here? Three years Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? We chose Liberty Builders because of the floor plan Roger James was able to offer us and his flexibility in giving us the home we wanted. It was easy to

communicate with Roger and he made the long-distance building process easy.

What’s your favorite thing about southeastern N.C.?

We enjoy the weather, the relaxed lifestyle and the friendly people.

Where did you live before relocating to southeastern N.C.? Bel Air, MD Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? In the book “1000 Places to visit in USA” we found Wilmington, “The East Coast Hollywood.” We were attracted by the city, riverfront, shopping, water activities and beaches all within our reach. Moving to North Carolina also helps our taxes low since Bill retired. The weather is also a benefit; we still have four seasons but we don’t need a snow blower anymore!

What community did you decide to move to and why?

Brunswick Forest. We looked at many communities and found Brunswick Forest to have it all! We love the availability to be as active as we want. The clubs, social activities, fitness and wellness opportunities and the overall feeling of friendliness in the area are just some of the reasons we love living in Brunswick Forest.

Why Leland? We are 15 minutes from the city life, arts, colleges and hospitals. The growing population is appealing and yet we don’t even have to leave our neighborhood or deal with the traffic.

How long have you lived here? Since April 17, 2015 Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? Logan Homes built our home. We found a model home that fit our lifestyle and we were able to customize it to our personal style. Dream Big, Build Smart is a pretty fitting slogan!

What’s your favorite thing about southeastern N.C.?

We like that it’s a coastal location with city amenities.

William Greer Broadwater Where did you live before relocating to southeastern N.C.?

We moved here from Tyrone, GA, a southern suburb of Atlanta.

Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? We moved here to be closer to our daughter and her husband, who live in Wilmington. She suggested Brunswick County.

What community did you decide to move to and why? Tom found our lot a couple of years ago in Olde Towne (Belville), and we decided to build this year. It was close to our daughter and still has a small-town feel.

Why Leland? We loved our lot’s location and the community felt like home. Everyone we met was so friendly.

How long have you lived here? We moved in on July 22, 2015, but returned to Georgia right away to get our house there ready to put on the market. We’ve been back a couple of times, but we are finally here for good.

Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them?

Horizon Homes of Wilmington custom built our home to our specifications using green building techniques. They were wonderful to work with and built our home on time.

What’s your favorite thing about southeastern N.C.? We haven’t been here long enough to have a favorite thing yet, but the friendliness of the people has really impressed us.

Where did you live before relocating to southeastern N.C.? Laurel, MD Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? We lived in Hawaii for four years and loved the weather, beautiful scenery, outdoor activities and friendly people. Gary recently retired, and we were seeking the aspects we loved about Hawaii while remaining closer to our families in Maryland.

What community did you decide to move to and why?

We selected Compass Pointe. The community has a wonderful feel and is so friendly. Most people are transplants and want to meet their neighbors. It’s a growing community with lots of activities. The projected growth will still make it a comfortable community; it’s not too large or overwhelming.

Why Leland? We began our selection by looking from New Bern to Hilton Head. We liked the nearness of Leland to Wilmington for easy access to culture, medical facilities, shopping and entertainment, but also liked not being in a congested area. Leland is within driving distance of family in Maryland and meets our criteria for weather, scenery, outdoor activities and friendly people.

How long have you lived here? We’ve only been in about a month (we are still in the opening boxes and making it a real home stage), but we spent much time walking in the community while making all of our decisions. For us, Compass Pointe has that special feel.

Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? Trusst. We loved the floor plan of the Grayson.

It has an open floor plan and it already included most of our desired upgrades in the base price. That was a real plus to us!

It slightly increased our useable space we use daily while seriously decreasing all of the space we were no longer using in our prior home (formal living/dining rooms, several additional bedrooms, etc.). It also has two sets of telescopic doors that open up to a wonderful EZ-Breeze screened-in porch that looks out to a pond. And the ceilings! The Grayson includes four beautiful decorated ceilings.

What’s your favorite thing about southeastern N.C.?

The weather! It gives us seasons without the severity of winter.

It’s an area where we feel like we want to go outside.

Where did you live before relocating here to southeastern N.C.? Melford Lakes, N.J. Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? Jay went to college a couple hours west of Wilmington many years ago and always dreamed of returning. We were looking for affordable coastal living because being at the beach is our most favorite thing. Whether sitting in our beach chairs with our toes in the sand reading and watching the pelicans or walking along the surf collecting shells and looking for sea glass, it is therapeutic. We were also drawn by the lure of a laid-back lifestyle and the charm of Wilmington and all it has to offer.

What community did you decide to move to and why?

Brunswick Forest because of the proximity to Wilmington and the beaches, the amenities and villages, and the developer’s financial stability and commitment.

Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? Bill Clark Homes. They offered attractive model alternatives, affordability and a commitment to energy efficiency and were very easy to do business with.

How long have you lived here? Since November 2014

Where did you live before relocating to southeastern N.C.? Warren, PA, which is in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, not too far from Lake Erie and lake effect snow!

What did you move to southeastern N.C.? We have been vacationing in different areas of North Carolina for about 25 years and always knew we would retire in North Carolina. We found Wilmington about four years ago and fell in love with the area. As retirement approached, we decided this was the place for us. We really enjoy the beaches and the weather. The day we left Warren it was 37 degrees. When we arrived here two days later it was in the high 70s. Thank you southeastern N.C. for the wonderful welcome!

What community did you decide to move to and why?

We were here several times looking at different communities, but once we saw Hearthstone we were hooked. Still, we continued to look at other developments but always came back to Hearthstone. We wanted a small community where we could get to know and become friends with our neighbors, and, of course, we fell in love with the beautiful brick homes and our large lot.

How long have you lived here? Just under a year and a half and it gets better each day. We are exploring the area, finding new and fun things to do, and meeting new people each and every day.

Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? Our home was built by Trusst Builder Group, the builder in Hearthstone. We were impressed by the quality, value and beauty of the homes they were building. Having worked for a contractor for nine years I feel we asked all the right questions about the development and especially the builder. We liked the answers, and we love our home. Also, the people who work for Trusst in the development are always very pleasant and willing to help out if there is a need. We are very certain that we chose the right builder and community.

What’s your favorite thing about southeastern N.C.?

We love everything about southeastern N.C. (ok, maybe not the traffic at times), but we have to say we enjoy the people most of all. Everyone is so pleasant and will do most anything to be helpful. We are always amazed that everyone seems so very happy and content.

Why did you move to southeastern N.C.? Our son-inlaw and daughter planted a new church in Wilmington called The Bridge Church. Bill retired from Duke Energy after 41 years, and we moved to be near our only daughter and her husband and grandchildren (there are now three girls ages 4, 2 and 4 months).

In parks across North Brunswick County,

far away from homework, chores and smart phones, playing fields are green and freshly cut.

Goal posts are set, and nets are fastened. Players in vivid uniforms dribble with artistry and pass with technical skill. They kick and chase the ball in the name of teamwork and love of the game.

Has there ever been a better time to play the game of soccer?

Scott Holden, the northern site coordinator for the Brunswick County Youth Soccer League, doesn’t think so.

“Kids are playing way too many video games these days,” he says.

In 1990, when soccer leagues were first introduced to the Leland area by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department, Holden was a kid himself.

“My mother, Judy Holden, helped start the league, so I played on one of the first teams,” he says. “Back then we only had two teams for each age group so we played the same team every week, but I loved the game.”

Twenty-five years later, Scott Holden is a soccer coach and the Brunswick County representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. What he’s discovered over the last two-plus decades is that soccer is assuredly gaining momentum in Brunswick County.

According to Holden, soccer is the rookie of American sports, but it’s by far the most widely played sport in the

world. In fact, the U.S. Women’s World Cup surpassed the NBA and World Series in TV viewer ratings this past July.

According to the U.S. Youth Soccer Organization, there were 72,999 kids registered to play soccer in North Carolina last year.

Currently the Brunswick County Youth Soccer League (BCYSL) offers spring and fall teams for Pre-K to 6th grade. For the older group, 7th to 12th graders, they have travel teams. Teams play weekly in the spring and fall.

As participation numbers increase, the league hopes to have local teams for all age groups. Soccer is an inclusive, readily accessible game as the rules are simple, but it’s still challenging physically and there is not a huge learning curve for beginners. For this reason, Holden says, parents should never fear volunteering to coach their child’s team or come out to the games to support them. But it’s important for the parents to be supportive of the other coaches and volunteers, including having respect for their rules, principles and decisions.

“We’re a recreation league, which is more developmental than Select, Challenge or Olympic development programs,” explains Holden. That means they focus on the enjoyable and exciting part of soccer as a way to develop healthy lifestyles and build character, which are emphasized over winning games.

BCYSL wants every kid to have the opportunity to play soccer, and for that reason they don’t do tryouts. Holden and the other coaches find a way to ensure that everyone interested gets a chance to play.

Unlike many other sports that require players to buy several pieces of protective gear, soccer players don’t need to spend a lot of money on equipment, which makes it an easy sport for most to get into. For BCYSL official games all you need are shoes and shin guards. “If you want to play on your own, all you need is a ball and a friend,” says Holden.

It’s no secret that children who participate in extracurricular activities and sports receive benefits that enrich every aspect of their lives and improve their personal mind and body growth and development. And soccer is no different. Besides the physicality, soccer helps children develop motor skills, balance and coordination. It also fosters the idea of teamwork and encourages emotional and social development through coach and player interaction.

“It’s amazing to see how micro soccer players, 4 to 5 year olds, grow out of the ‘Me First’ mentally and slowly start to develop awareness of others around them and how teamwork is an important life skill,” says Holden.

With a technology-obsessed culture that often inspires a sedentary

lifestyle, youth soccer aims to nurture healthy lifestyles in kids by promoting how fun and social exercise can be.

Getting kids interested in recreational sports can help combat and prevent childhood obesity. Practice sessions and league games involve running and stop-and-start maneuvers, which increase fitness as well as skills levels. It is Holden’s hope that players develop an enjoyment for the game and an appreciation for being fit and healthy.

Holden began his soccer coaching career by training his twin nephews. Now, as a licensed coach through the U.S. Soccer Federation for ages 9 to 12 and a certified high school coach through the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, he still has the

same coaching philosophy: to build character and a healthy self-image in youth through the fun of soccer.

“I think parents and new coaches often have trouble teaching soccer because they don’t understand why kids play the sport,” explains Holden. “Kids play soccer for two reasons. One, to have fun, and two, to be with their friends. Once you understand this, you can use it to really develop a great learning environment.”

In the past 25 years Brunswick County Parks and Recreation along with supportive parents and community members have put together a soccer league that’s prospered here ever since. Today, locals have accepted soccer as readily as football or basketball. And perhaps no other sport is as synonymous with the word fun as soccer. Because in the end, that’s what it’s all about.

“The majority of our players continue playing soccer in high school and some in college,” says Holden.

But that’s not really the objective of the league. It’s the passion, direction — not just in the sport, but in life — fitness, self-confidence, self-esteem and camaraderie that defines the benefits of the sport of soccer.

“Soccer is one of the most accessible and accepting sports in the world,” Holden says. “The Brunswick County Youth Soccer League has always been about building character and inspiring a healthy lifestyle in a fun environment.

“Something hoppy?” I had barely stepped through the breezeway at Bombers Bev Co. when — with a widespread grin and a nudge of his backwards cap — Zach Boylston called out my brew style of choice. But this wasn’t just a lucky guess as Bombers isn’t just a specialty bottle shop.

It’s a beer experience. A beer-perience, if you will. And that exceptional service is merely one drop of its charm.

What’s a bottle shop, you ask? Fuse a craft beer retail store with a tasting room and you’ve got the bones of the building.

Drop in three dudes whose inspiring backgrounds include a flair for home-brew, a second-level Cicerone certification, expertise in finance and a knack for social media — and you’ve got Bombers.

When I was asked to write this piece, one thought came to mind: Good, drinking beer will count as work today. And in the spirit of transparency let me say that Bombers is my downtown hangout of choice, so I’ve become quite friendly with owners Caleb Churchwell, Jacob Wright, and Zach Boylston. Since they opened up shop last October, I’ve been an avid member of their unofficial stool-sitters club.

I mean, let’s be real. It’s a hipster’s dream: Three millennial males who quit their jobs to play with hop bombs and Crowler machines.

All three guys were brewed in Raleigh and eventually made their way to the Carolina shore. Caleb, who handles much of Bombers’ administration and execution, offers a passionate palate and a wealth of knowledge for managing a beverage business. Jacob, law degree in hand, said “I object” to the courtroom and now utilizes his sales skills and financial experience to raise the bar. Yeah, I just said that.

If you follow Bombers’ blockbuster social media stats, the man behind the marketing is Zach. His enthusiasm for trendy networking and his achievements in filmmaking taught him the ropes of public relations and event planning.

Now that the memoirs are complete, let’s catch you up on the craft scene and how each Bombers bro is making his mark.

First and foremost, an appreciation for thoughtfully brewed beer is just like shaping your palate when it comes to sophisticated cuisine. You don’t need a culinary degree to recognize delicious food, and you don’t have to pronounce Gose correctly to drink your way through the finest breweries. But if you’re just beginning, it certainly helps to have a skipper at the helm. Enter, Captain Caleb.

Ever heard a foodie drop jargon like Dauphinoise or spatchcocked chicken? When it comes to breaking it down, Caleb speaks the language of liquid. Without even needing a sip, Caleb can spit out terms like “chewy” and “banana character.” There’s a science between every style of beer, and he’s happy to spread the love. He’s a sucker for sours, IPAs and barrel-aged brews — but his palate is a professional in all flavors. Just as you’d prefer a five-star chef preparing your dinner, you want Caleb cruising your ship towards the tastiest sea.

When the weather begins to fluctuate and the taps make their rotations, it can be confusing to decipher what makes sense and when. It’s not just saisons in the summertime and stouts when it’s cold. With infinite styles, flavors and hop

blends, it’s good to know someone who specializes in cycling brews. Jacob stays on top of the trends, expertly sipping his way through the seasons and prudently taking us along for the ride. He’s arrived just in time, as we’ve entered the age of the beer nerd and we’re all about taking it slow. No longer do we want to pop the top off a Budwhatever and see how many we can make disappear. Let Jacob pour you a West Coast style IPA. Now that’s magic.

When Bombers opened its doors, in walked Stew and Barb — some of the bar’s first patrons.

“I live by two things,” remarked Stew, “Drink awesome beer and be good to people.”

As I listened to this story and gulped down my Hop Knife, a citrusy hop explosion by Tröegs, Zach motioned to a chalkboard behind him. That saying has become Bombers’ mantra and it buzzes on inside their walls. While the expression stuck with all three owners, Zach has truly taken these words as a lesson to live by. His cheerful, laidback spirit brings a personable element to the shop.

Can’t remember what you drank and loved last Tuesday night? Zach can probably tell you. And if that keg’s already tapped, by the time you hit your stool he’ll have poured a similar sample so you can find your way back. If you’re Fall 2015

But it’s not all about the drink for these three. Bombers has partnered with local businesses for entertaining events.

Instead of shining front and center in their own spotlight, they focus their goals on community building and standing up for causes they believe in. They’ve given to at least eight charities — WARM, CARE, UNCW, Pretty in Pink, to name a few — proving that beer really is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Thanks, B. Franklin.

Keep an eye out next May for their epic Beer Fest that will bring in sensational brew masters from all over. If you’re expecting flip cup and frat stars stumbling into tents, think again. Bombers has dubbed this the “Rare Beer Experience.” They’re essentially taking their shop’s agenda — an appreciation for America’s most celebrated and stellar breweries — and amplifying it to create an extravaganza of an event.

“The mindset of a true craft beer drinker is that you’re always going to go where the good juice is,” says Zach.

If this rings true for your crowd, Bombers’ Beer Fest is a bash you don’t want to miss. Got some friends who still don’t drink IPAs but have been bitten by the beer bug? Bring them along and pour their curiosity into a cup. If they’re worried

Caleb, Jacob and Zach may have used the bottle shop format as their foundation, but they’ve put Bombers into a category of its own. They’re operating like a small shop but strategizing like a big business. Take their draft-to-carryout ratio for example. Nearly 60 to 70 percent of what patrons are drinking on draft is also on the shelves. If customers can’t find the beer they want in bottles or cans, they can fill up their favorite with the Crowler machine. Bombers is even expanding by bringing in fresh pourers like local brew authority Joan Wilkerson, who’s known all around town for her expertise in the hop world.

with the cute name is difficult to miss. Since 2004 it has been serving breakfast, lunch and desserts to locals and visitors alike.

Expect a traditional Southern breakfast when you visit Purple Onion Café between 6:30 and 11 am — think grits, home fries, eggs, sausage, pancakes, French toast and a variety of treats from the bakery. And while lunch does offer a choice of salads, don’t expect to venture too far from traditional Southern foods. Fried green tomatoes are one of the first items on the menu, followed by burgers and sandwiches. October 17 & 18 The 30th annual Bike MS: Breakaway to the Beach is a two -day cycling event that raises funds to support people living with multiple sclerosis in the Carolinas and throughout the United States. The coastal location, flat landscape and miles of rural roads allow every level of cyclist to participate and enjoy their choice of routes each day. 35th Annual NC Oyster Festival Entertainment Schedule

NC Festival by the Sea

October 24 & 25 The NC Festival by the Sea is a two-day event that kicks off with a parade down the Holden Beach causeway on Saturday.

This is the only day of the year that you can walk across the Holden Beach Bridge. Arts and crafts vendors are open from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday and 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Enjoy a horseshoe tournament and a sandcastle building contest.

The Aquarium offers three ways to involve your business with Trick or Treat Under the Sea: Reserve your booth space for one to three nights; donate prizes, coupons or gift certificates for drawings and contests; or invest in sponsorship opportunities. Cape Fear Festival of Trees

November 23 through December 6 Set amidst the inspiring and educational backdrop of the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, this year’s Cape Fear Festival of Trees is sure to be one of the most unique festivities on the Cape Fear coast. It’s hosted at the N.C. Aquarium, and all visitors who purchase a general admission ticket to the aquarium between November 23 and December 6 will also experience the Cape Fear Festival of Trees. All tree sponsors will receive four general admission tickets to the aquarium for use at any time during the festival, as well as four passes to this year’s Sponsor Recognition Party, Jingle with the Jellies, at 6 pm on December 3.

December 11 & 12 St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilmington is hosting its third annual Coastal Carolina Christmas event. It will span two nights, Friday, Dec. 11th at 7p.m. and Saturday, December 12th at 7:30p.m. (doors open at 7p.m). On Friday night there will be a candlelight concert featuring carols by the Wilmington Boys Choir and selections from Handel’s Messiah by the Choir of St. Paul’s, soloists and chamber orchestra, followed by a Sparkling Chocolate reception. Organizations to Co-Host First Southern Tour Ultra

January 30, 2016 Wilmington Health Foundation is partnering with Without Limits to bring the first Ultra race to Wilmington next January. An Ultra running race is a race that’s more than the distance of a traditional marathon (26.2 miles). The Southern Tour Ultra will feature a 50-kilometer race, a 50-mile relay and a 5-mile race.
