iscal year 2013 was a watershed moment for the Menil Collection as the museum marked its 25th anniversary. The occasion provided an opportunity to celebrate the rich legacy of our founders, John and Dominique de Menil, to assess where the institution is today, and to look toward our future. As we reconnect with our history, I am reminded of how much the museum has grown. Since the Menil’s founding, the scope of its activities and donor base has expanded tremendously. Further to our growth as an institution, we feel it is important to share with you all that we are able to accomplish through your support. It therefore gives me great pleasure to present to you the Menil Collection’s first annual report. The report strives to highlight our achievements and performance, provide greater transparency, and offer an overview of ongoing, behind-the-scenes activities, such as recent acquisitions and projects in our conservation lab. You’ll see that a number of memorable endeavors unfolded in fiscal year 2013. Menil membership and visitor attendance reached record levels. We commemorated our 25th anniversary with a range of thoughtful exhibitions, public programs, and festivities. The exhibition Dear John and Dominique: Letters and Drawings from the Menil Archives reminded us of the extraordinary range of artists, architects, curators, intellectuals, and social activists our founders corresponded with and supported. Conveying gratitude, awe, and delight, the assembled exchanges provided an intimate look at the

pioneering ideas that helped form the museum long before the building opened in 1987. Implemented in fiscal year 2013, the ongoing Voices of the Menil: A Cell Phone Audio Walk enhances the visitor experience through access to audio clips from Menil curators, artists, and former students of Dominique de Menil, who share anecdotes about the history of artworks and the architecture of our buildings. Old and new friends from around the globe gathered for cocktails, dinner, dancing, and a silent auction for the Menil 25th anniversary Celebration in Blue. The museum’s largest fundraiser to date, the event raised over $2.2 million to benefit the Menil’s general operations, far surpassing our goal. Alongside the celebratory programming, our curatorial team continued to organize outstanding, scholarly exhibitions drawing on our collection and introducing new artists to our audiences. In an unprecedented collaborative project, The Progress of Love—co-organized with the Centre for Contem– porary Art, Lagos, and the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, St. Louis—brought together the work of twentythree artists predominately from Africa, but also from Europe and America, whose work explores the legacy of courtly love and how contemporary society reacts to and reshapes these ideals. Furthermore, the American Institute of Architects awarded the Menil their Twenty-five Year Award, confirming that Renzo Piano’s design for the museum has stood the test of time and putting it in the company of other architecturally significant institutions, such

as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Please take this report as part of our continued effort to strengthen and improve the Menil Collection and your experience as a visitor and patron. I am honored to serve as director of the Menil Collection, alongside talented colleagues who have chosen Houston as their home and the museum as the beneficiary of their considerable expertise. Together, with you, we serve as stewards of this remarkable institution, committed to its philosophy of inclusion, allegiance to creative enterprise, and position as a singular destination for art, architecture, and civic vitality. Sincerely, Josef Helfenstein Director

AIA Award

American Institute of Architects Twenty-five Year Award

The Menil Collection and Renzo Piano Building Workshop accept the AIA award in Denver. Left to right: Mary Katherine Lanzillotta, FAIA; Robert Ivy, FAIA; Josef Helfenstein, Menil Director; Shunji Ishida and Mark Carroll, Renzo Piano Building Workshop; Sheryl Kolasinski, FAIA, Menil Deputy Director and COO; and Mickey Jacob, FAIA

In January 2013, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) named the Menil winner of its Twenty-five Year Award, confirmation that Renzo Piano’s design for the museum has stood the test of time with other modern masterpieces. Described by the jury as “timeless” and “a monument of 20th Century architecture that still resonates today,” the award puts the Menil in the company of such other architecturally significant institutions as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), Louis Kahn’s Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth), and Josep Lluís Sert’s Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona). In June 2013, Menil Director Josef Helfenstein and Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Kolasinski attended the AIA’s annual convention in Denver to accept the award.

PERMANENT COLLECTION

Antiquities Gallery

J

ohn and Dominique de Menil’s private collection of art remains the primary basis for the Menil Collection, an unconventional and non-encyclopedic museum focused on four major areas: antiquities; Byzantine and medieval art; arts of Africa, Pacific Islands, and the Americas; and twentieth-century and contemporary art with an emphasis on European modernism, Surrealism, and American postwar periods. Works of art are on rotating display within a minimal and generous space allowing the visitor room for contemplation. Faith in the power of art, respect for the individual artist’s intention, and assurance of the viewer’s unmediated experience in the gallery are core values of the Menil Collection. That viewing experience is enhanced by the intimate quality of space and light at the Menil, and its restrained aesthetic of display.

n its collecting activities, the Menil is committed to the work of living artists and to expanding its holdings of works by artists already in the collection. Notably in fiscal year 2013, the Menil added to its collection a major new site-specific work by Richard Serra, Two Corner Cut: High Low, created for the 2012 exhibition Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective. The Menil is committed to collecting the work of a select number of individual artists in depth to further scholarship and understanding of an individual artist or period. In fiscal year 2013, the Menil acquired works by RenÊ Magritte, David Novros, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly, expanding the museum’s already important collections of works by these significant twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists.

Electricians restoring the Dan Flavin exterior installation at Richmond Hall

Dan Flavin Installation Restoration In March 2013, the Menil completed the restoration of the Dan Flavin exterior installation at Richmond Hall. The installation of these new fixtures was the culmination of over one and a half years of research to identify and evaluate suitable replacements for the original components, many of which were no longer commercially available and had to be fabricated to the original specifications. Steve Morse, exhibition coordinator and conservator for the Dan Flavin Studio, came to Houston to oversee the installation and to join objects conservator Shelley Smith and chief conservator Brad Epley on Wednesday, March 27, in a public presentation on the preservation of Flavin’s work. The building’s exterior was repainted to complement the overall restoration. pp. 32–33: Prints and drawings storage

Artists Documentation Program In October 2012, the Menil and partner institutions the Whitney Museum of American Art and Harvard Art Museums completed the processing of six new interviews for inclusion in the Artists Documentation Program (ADP) archive and for publication on its website, adp.menil.org. Richard Serra, Danny Lyon, and Suzan Frecon were interviewed at the Menil; Glenn Ligon and Wade Guyton were interviewed at the Whitney; and Gary Schneider was interviewed at Harvard. Following the interviews’ publication on the ADP website, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation approved a twelve-month extension of the existing project grant to enable the institutions to undertake an additional three interviews. The three artists chosen, Robert Gober, Doris Salcedo, and Terry Winters, were interviewed in late spring 2013, and their interviews are currently in production and archival processing.

Publications

T

wo books published this year epitomize the Menil’s aims of complementing the direct encounter with art and contributing to scholarship. Forrest Bess: Seeing Things Invisible is the first monograph since the 1980s on this cyclically popular artist. Fifty-five carefully selected paintings and new research and insights shed light on Bess’s art and its alternating obscurity and renown. The book and traveling loan exhibition should help put Bess on the art world’s map as never before. Byzantine Things in the World counterpoints images of artworks, installations, and architecture chosen specifically for the book with short texts and essays by ten scholars. It interprets editor/ curator Glenn Peers’s art historically innovative thesis that seeing ancient Byzantine things alongside artful, functional, and ritual analogues from other times and places could help us understand how Byzantine material things are saturated with meaning. The book’s organization and graphic design help the reader to engage art, ideas, and materiality in fresh and illuminating ways.

Library & Archives

SCHOLARSHIP

Menil Library The Menil Library acquired 610 new books in fiscal year 2013. Among the highlights of these new acquisitions were purchases made possible through the generosity of the Menil’s Friends of the Library affinity group. Funds raised through this group are used exclusively for the purchase of rare and important material that supplements the Menil’s Special Collections. This year, the Menil purchased André Breton’s L’amour fou (1937), with photography by Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Dora Maar, and others, moving the library toward completing its collection of first editions of this very important Surrealist writer. The library also acquired a copy of the catalogue of Richard Serra’s first solo gallery show, Richard Serra, held at the Galleria La Salita, Rome, in May 1966, making the Menil only the sixth library in the world to have this very rare title. Holdings from the Menil Archives were featured in two Houston exhibitions: Dear John and Dominique: Letters and Drawings from the Menil Archives, part of the Menil’s own 25th anniversary celebration; and Raid the Archives: The de Menil Years at Rice, shown at the Rice Media Center. Raid the Archives featured documents, posters, and photographs from nineteen exhibitions organized by John and Dominique de Menil for the Institute for the Arts and shown at the Rice Museum during the 1970s. Fiscal year 2013 saw the implementation of a new Records Retention Program, which preserves institutional history through the identification and transfer of perma nent records from Menil Foundation departments to the archives. The archives received inactive records from Facilities, Communications, Advancement, Membership, and Administration. The collections registrar transferred to the archives two groups of records: administrative and de-accession documents. The archives also received the remaining records from the Byzantine Fresco Foundation.

Research & Recognition

Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement In November 2012, independent curator Cuauhtémoc Medina was chosen as the sixth recipient of the biennial Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement. Widely acknowledged as one of the key figures behind the rise to international prominence of contemporary art from Mexico City, Medina has organized both large survey exhibitions and projects developed with individual artists. He was most recently head curator of the Manifesta 9 biennial in Belgium (2012). Medina accepted the award and delivered a public lecture at the Menil Collection on Monday, June 10, 2013. Established in 2001 in honor of Menil Founding Director Walter Hopps (1932–2005), the award recognizes curators in early to mid-career who have made significant contributions to the field of contemporary art; it confers a stipend of $15,000.

Vivian L. Smith Foundation Symposium Hearing Postwar Art The 2013 Vivian L. Smith Foundation Symposium, Hearing Postwar Art, took place in the former Byzantine Fresco Chapel on Saturday, May 11. Organized by Smith fellow Melissa Warak, the symposium brought together scholars interested in the intersection of twentieth-century postwar art, music, and sound, and included two concerts of experimental music by composers Benjamin Patterson and Cornelius Cardew. Funding from Houston’s Smith Foundation enables the Menil Collection and the University of Texas at Austin to advance the relationship between the academic and museum worlds of art history. Vivian L. James Salter’s Inprint reading at the Menil

he Menil had an extraordinarily full and varied year of public programs in 2012. In addition to the 25th anniversary celebrations, there was the establishment of the annual Marion Barthelme Lecture Series and a music-filled Vivian L. Smith Foundation Symposium. It was a year in which the spirit of American composers John Cage and Philip Glass was never far away. The exhibitions Silence and The Progress of Love each had their own film series, and dance and musical performances. Now in its fifth year, the annual Menil Community Arts Festival again joined the Houston Indie Book Fest to bring a large and hungry crowd (and exceptional food trucks) into the neighborhood. Inprint presented readings by poets Terrance Hayes and Kim Addonizio and by esteemed fiction writer James Salter to packed houses. Public Programs

On Saturday, September 15, 2012, the Menil Collection, in collaboration with Da Camera, presented Houston’s first John Cage “Musicircus,” a concert with a wide range of musical styles performed simultaneously. The program was a component of the Silence exhibition, which featured Da Camera percussionists (above) and Maori performers (left).

Toby Kamps leads the Menil Contemporaries on a gallery tour of Silence

uring fiscal year 2013, Menil membership reached record numbers, with 1,621 households contributing nearly $1 million in unrestricted support to the museum’s operations. Menil Society membership has achieved remarkable growth of 18 percent in revenue over the past five years, raising $818,306 in fiscal year 2013, a record total from this leadership group of members. Pursuing an ongoing initiative to attract more supporters in their twenties and thirties, the Menil Contemporaries reached an all-time high of 370 members, continuing a steady pattern of growth that began in 2008 when membership stood at just eighty-one members. In addition to their membership support, many Menil members increased their commitment to the museum with gifts to the annual fund. Annual fund contributions increased by 32 percent over the previous year. And the Menil was pleased to achieve a significant increase of 70 percent in donations given onsite due to an enhanced effort to encourage a specific donation amount from visitors.

Rice MBA Collaboration During spring 2013, the Advancement Office partnered with a team of six MBA students from Rice University’s Jones School of Business on a semesterlong project to conduct a survey of the Menil’s members and visitors. Key findings from these surveys show that members and visitors alike are happy with their involvement and experience. The majority of member respondents (80 percent) indicated that they would “Very Likely” or “Likely” renew their membership, and almost half (46 percent) indicated they would “Very Likely” recommend membership to others. Additionally, among visitors to the Menil, an overwhelming 75 percent responded that they were “Very Pleased” with their experience, and over 60 percent indicated that they are “Very Likely” to revisit the museum. Findings gathered from the surveys enable the staff to better understand the Menil’s constituents and help shape effective strategies for enhancing the visitor and membership experience.

Education University Architecture Students Twenty-five years after it opened, Renzo Piano’s building continues to inspire a new generation of architects. During fiscal year 2013, students from four schools of architecture toured the campus with Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Kolasinski (also an architect) to learn from the Menil’s signature neighborhood of art. The students explored unique aspects of both the collection and the building, toured the Treasure Rooms to understand the intimate interaction of scholar and artwork, and studied large-scale models of the galleries to observe the effect of different kinds of shades, scrims, louvers, baffles, and roof constructions on natural light. The University of Houston adopted the Menil’s collection storage as a studio design project, while Arizona State University, Prairie View A&M University, and the University of Texas at Austin concentrated on the Menil Drawing Institute (MDI). The students took on the challenge of designing not only the building itself, but also specifying the placement of the building in the site, along with all the real-world aspects of new parks and streets.

Deputy Director and COO Sheryl Kolasinski shares her expertise on museum design with Arizona State University architecture students (above), who celebrate their Menil visit (below)

Writing at the Menil A fundamental component of Writers in the Schools’ (WITS) yearlong arts education program, Writing at the Menil provided fifty-three visits to the museum during fiscal year 2013, benefiting approximately 6,252 students in 194 classrooms across thirty-one schools in Houston. Students presented their work to the public at the annual Young Writers Reading, a juried competition that took place at the Menil Community Arts Festival on April 20, and at the Watchful Eye on May 23. Ninety percent of the children served by Writing at the Menil attend Title 1 schools, and seventy percent never have visited a museum before.
