THE BIG QUESTION

celebrate the next morning PROS If you’re hosting a destination wedding or most of your guests are traveling to attend the festivities, a brunch is a perfect place for good-byes. (It’s unlikely you’ll be able to properly thank your grandmother for coming while showing off your skills in a bridal party dance-off.) “Brunch also tends to be more low-key, which may fit a certain couple’s personality better than an after-party,” says wedding planner and TV personality David Tutera. CONS If you plan a brunch instead of an after-party, you may be surprisingly sad when your reception goes by in what feels like the blink of an eye. Plus, since brunch is a separate event, it may require more planning (particularly if your venue offers an afterparty that’s just an extension of the reception).

revel into the wee hours PROS “Your wedding goes fast, and an after-party extends your time to let loose with your friends—after greataunt Ada has left. Young groups generally prefer to party late rather than get up early,” says celebrity wedding planner Lindsay Landman. An after-party is also a good option if you have lots of people from out of town who plan on leaving first thing in the morning, or if you’re having a local wedding and don’t think people will attend another event the next day. CONS If your venue won’t allow you to stay after-hours, you’ll have to pay to transport people to another establishment—and then pay for drinks once they’re there. “Pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice and coffee can be more cost-effective,” says Annie Lee, creator of Learn to Speak Wedding: Flashcards for Beginners.
