MUSIC RIPPLING THROUGH LIVES AND COMMUNITY Dear Friends, JILL DAWE Co-President, Board of Directors The Cedar Cultural Center
How can music change the world? That’s a question I’ve been asking my whole life. It’s a question that underpins my career as a pianist and music professor at Augsburg University, and it’s one that’s central to my involvement at The Cedar where I serve as Co-President of the Board. It’s easy to see music’s short term impacts –– concerts, performances, recordings, recitals. But how do these experiences add up to something more?
The Cedar’s work goes beyond presenting a vibrant array of music in our community. The deep work is about creating a platform for artist voices, a space for people to come together, and a forum for new ideas to emerge and be heard. It’s about presenting artists from around the globe, as well as talented local and emerging voices, and inviting Minnesotans of all backgrounds and ages into one room to get to know one another, through music.

I’ve experienced the impact of The Cedar’s work firsthand as an educator. Since 2014, Augsburg has partnered with The Cedar for Midnimo, an in-depth residency program featuring the world’s top Somali artists. Our students participate in concerts and workshops with Midnimo artists, and learn and play Somali music in newly-created bands with these global talents. This work has affected the students, and me, in ways I would not have imagined four years ago. One student told me several years after graduating that The Cedar completely changed the way he saw music, culture, and his own artistic possibilities. That’s the kind of impact that resonates long after the lights turn off after a concert, or a workshop winds down. That impact — a change in people’s perspectives — ripples out beyond our doors and continues to deepen and grow. It’s the kind of work that can, perhaps, change the world.

LOCAL ... The Cedar’s commitment to artistic excellence and integrity starts at home. In 2017, we presented over 160 local artists, ranging from Minnesota’s first tabla ensemble and debuts of commissions to album releases in many genres.

Midnimo
Minnesota-based Somali qaarami singer Rahma Rose is one of two 2017-18 artists-in-residence at The Cedar. She made waves with her performance at this year’s Local Roots Festival – a new 2017 addition to The Cedar’s annual Global Roots Festival – that highlights local artists representing our neighborhood’s diverse cultures and musical traditions.
FROM BACKSTAGE IN THE CEDAR’S GREENROOM...
It’s The Grace and Dalmar Show, a web series created with support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation featuring 2017-18 Cedar artist-in-residence, Somali singer Dalmar Yare, and Cedar booker Grace Hall. Over 10 episodes, the duo gave audiences a humorous and historyfilled inside scoop on music coming to The Cedar.
CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH LATINX ART
Festival de las Calaveras, organized by Tlalnepantla Arts, is a celebration of Minnesota Latinx music and art centered on the Day of the Dead. This year’s festival featured a stellar all-local bill, including former Cedar Commissions artists Maria Isa and SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE, rising stars Lady Midnight and Javier Trejo, group sing-alongs, dance, visual art, food, and puppetry.

MAPPING A CAREER
The Cedar has presented iconic singer-songwriter, activist, poet, and DIY trendsetter Ani DiFranco over 20 times since our founding. NATIONAL ... Each year, The Cedar combs the country to present new music from a continually changing landscape of voices, styles, and communities of artists who weave countless traditions into their sound.
THE “KING OF SLYDECO”
Traditional American genres like blues, country, and folk continue to find a home at The Cedar through artists like Louisiana virtuoso guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth. His 2018 show featured a rare full-band appearance, with Sonny playing songs from his almost 40-year long career that highlighted his unique blend of zydeco and slide guitar.
MUSIC WITH A MESSAGE
The Cedar’s commitment to finding new national voices led us to groups like Chicago-based Sidewalk Chalk, who layer energetic music with poignant social commentary and activism. Their unique reinvention of hip-hop, soul, and jazz with profound messages continues to evolve and impact audiences throughout the country.

to THE STRENGTH OF STRINGS
The music of longtime Cedar favorites Väsen unites many strings: a sophisticated symphonic five-string viola, an adventurous 12-string guitar, and a nyckelharpa. Their sound, both fresh and deeply rooted in the traditions of Swedish folk music, has thrilled Cedar audiences from their first performance in 1997 to their most recent in March 2018.
MASHUP CULTURE
This year, we presented many emerging global artists finding new inspirations by mixing traditional forms, such as South Korean glam-rock group SsingSsing, who borrow heavily from ancient Korean shamanic practices and folk songs, and Cuban singer, flautist and percussionist La Dame Blanche, who creates an explosive mix of hip hop, cumbia, dancehall and reggae. GLOBAL ... From artists dedicated to upholding traditions to those that push the limits of the avant-garde, The Cedar’s programming celebrates music from around the world. In 2017, we presented 76 international bands and artists hailing from over 40 countries to 50,000+ people.

The highlight of The Cedar’s global music programming each year is our Global Roots Festival, three nights of free double-billed shows by some of the year’s hottest international music acts. This year, the festival expanded to include the Local Roots Festival, which celebrated community partnerships and neighborhood history through special performances, folk and craft stations, and more out on The Cedar’s Community Plaza and in our hall.

Midnimo TAKING CENTER STAGE
Cedar Riverside neighborhood youth worked with theater artist Taous Khazem for one month as part of The Cedar’s Midnimo program to create a short performance called “I AM” drawing inspiration from their own stories, lives, and experiences. Local Somali percussionist Harbi accompanied the youth for their debut performance at The Cedar, adding music based in traditional Somali rhythms.

Through 200 concerts and artist-led activities each year, The Cedar’s commitment to amplifying new voices expands perspectives and points of access both on our stage and in our audiences.
FOR ALL TO HEAR
The 2017 Global Roots Festival marked the unveiling of The Cedar’s brand new Assistive Listening System. Funded by a grant from VSA Minnesota, our outdated 20-year-old receivers, transmitters, and headsets were swapped out for a new state-of-the-art system to better serve patrons who are hard-of-hearing, and to aid in audio description and language translation.
INNOVATIVE CREATIONS
We presented new music from six local artists with themes ranging from political issues, murder ballads, and family legacy as part of The Cedar Commissions 2018, a program supported by the Jerome Foundation that has enabled the creation of new work from over 45 emerging artists since 2011.

During the 2017 Northern Spark, an all-night summer arts festival, artists, neighborhood residents, and crowds broke their fast together at an interfaith Community Iftar, enjoying conversation, connection, and a festive Ramadan celebration on The Cedar’s Community Plaza.
VOLUNTEER POWER
Our community of 300+ volunteers is the glue that holds The Cedar together. Volunteers play a crucial role during every show, assisting with set up, selling concessions and artist merchandise, handling ticketing, and cleaning up. In 2017, volunteers worked over 2,000 shifts to keep The Cedar going strong. Thank you!

Each year, 100 local and national musicians unite for Drone not Drones, a benefit for Doctors Without Borders that fills The Cedar’s hall with a continuous 28 hours of live drone music. For the first time, KFAI Community Radio live-streamed the full event, spreading the music and message across Twin Cities airwaves and around the world.
