WELCOME On behalf of the entire Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival team, welcome to our 40th!

It’s been a wild ride over these past forty years.

From our first sold out screening in 1976, to our 25th anniversary summit in 2000, to the program in front of you – amazing adventurers have been crossing our stages for four decades and we couldn’t be prouder to present you with this year’s offerings.

Over the course of forty years, mountain celebrities like Sir Edmund Hillary, Reinhold Messner, Catherine Destivelle, David Suzuki, Jane Goodall, and Peter Matthiessen have graced our stages. This year, the next generation comes to the fore with personalities like Tommy Caldwell, Alex Honnold, and Kit Deslauriers. Contemporary cutting-edge climbers and adventurers who knew before they set out that the bar had been set high by the generation before, but that didn’t discourage them from entering into the unknown.

At the heart of the very first “Banff Festival of Mountaineering Films” was a notion of celebrating climbers and mountain culture, and of exposing our local outdoor tribe to the many international personalities who may not have been accessible otherwise. News spread much slower back then – especially mountain news.

One might not have heard about a first ascent or a successful expedition for weeks or even months, and the Festival was one of those outlets where the stories were shared and rumours were finally set to rest.

We live in a world of instant messaging, blogging from basecamp, and Skyping from summits.

News reaches us in the blink of an eye. But interestingly enough, the stories are still what bring people to the Festival even if they’ve heard them before via social media outlets, on demand channels, or other digital platforms. In this age of information and global communication, seeing our heroes in person and watching films on the big screen has never been more important and more poignant.

There’s something to be said about the gathering of friends and like-minded folks at our festival that gets people talking to each other. It’s a personal experience that a session with your home computer or your mobile phone can’t replicate.

Over the course of nine days we’ll be offering you 89 films, more than 20 book programs, free mountain exhibitions and endless workshops.

All this in addition to special 40th anniversary programming like the Festival Flashback screenings at the Lux Cinema Banff that showcase old favourites and people’s choice award winners from Festivals past. Check out our 40 Year Poster Retrospective exhibition in the Max Bell, the cutting-edge artwork in the Walter Philips Gallery, or take in some late night music in The Club. The Banff Centre is a unique arts organization that oozes creativity and encourages contemporary dialogue at every turn.

Now is a great time to get to know us better – there’s a lot more to the Festival and The Banff Centre than just films. Welcome to our next great adventure!

The Epic of Everest is the official film record, shot by Captain John Noel, of the third British expeditions to attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest peak. The film exemplifies the age of heroic adventure as it records the approach to the mountain and the final attempts of climbers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine on the summit ridge before their tragic disappearance.

The tale of a badger who just wants the world to let him sleep.

Overcome with fear, a young boy runs into the forest. He finds a magic red helmet and goes on the adventure of a lifetime.

Wildlife biologist Karsten Heuer and filmmaker Leanne Allison set out from the remote village of Old Crow in the Yukon to follow the annual migration of the Porcupine caribou herd. The couple’s plan is to accompany the 123,000 caribou from their wintering range in central Yukon to the spring calving grounds on Alaska’s coastal plain, and back again – on foot!

In 2001, climber and adventurer Jon Muir began a 2500-kilometre odyssey to cross Australia from the south coast to the north coast on foot. For 128 days, Jon and his dog, Seraphine, survived entirely off the land, hunting and gathering along the way.

This is the incredible story of three young men who risk their lives again and again on board their little yacht, Berserk. Their destination is Antarctica, and the frank portrayal of the three sailors is fresh and humourous. Plenty of people said that this voyage was doomed to go wrong – and they were right.

In 1938, three Parisians pushed off from a Wyoming riverbank to attempt the first kayak exploration of the notoriously wild Green and Colorado rivers – and they recorded their journey, creating the first colour adventure film. The reels went unseen for 75 years, until Ian McCluskey spotted the trio on a roadside marker, sending him on his own adventure to discover more.

The first North American exhibition of Australian artist and filmmaker Angelica Mesiti, The Calling (2014) is a three-channel film about alternative structures of language that connect disparate and remote mountain communities – specifically focusing on whistling as a form of communication, economy and pedagogy in the Canary Islands, Greece and Turkey. The Calling looks at deeper post/pre-language forms of communication centered on listening and ancient modes of exchange.

Without, within is the first Canadian solo exhibition of San Francisco based Elisheva Biernoff’s work. Installation work and delicate realist paintings provide commentary on the mismanagement of ecology, lost histories, and disappearing landscapes. By repainting found photographs in meticulous detail and pairing them like lost family members, Biernoff highlights the banality present in images that are captured and recorded, the profound sadness of loss in its myriad forms.

Bradley Keys & The Makings VI: Ceramic Exhibitions WILLOCK & SAX GALLERY, 210 BEAR STREET NOVEMBER 1 – 30

Edges & Ledges is a solo exhibition of high alpine paintings by Georgina Perkins Hunt, which represent her past summer’s adventures in the Canadian Rockies and then her winter’s studio work. High ridges and rock fall are seen from the vantage point of an artist who has been there, scrambling, climbing and taking in the vast vistas from the mountain top.

Topographic is a ceramic exhibition by Bradley Keys, an artist long interested in what makes the earth work. He considers the rhythms of the landscape, the wind, and gravel under our feet, which he translates into ceramic vessels that encompass the greater scope.

Following the success of Nederveen’s debut exhibition at Canada House Gallery in 2014, Nederveen returns with a fresh body of work.

Inspired by his travels, Nederveen photographs places that feel alive to him. He then reimagines the world through a combination of digital and painterly processes. By blurring the lines between photography and painting, Nederveen has developed a magical realism that he hopes inspires others to see the world with enchanted eyes.

Nepal is one of the most impoverished countries in the world so when disaster struck in the form of earthquakes early this year, things seemed especially desperate. The mountain culture community has rallied together over the last several months to provide support to the country that has provided them with so many once-in-a-lifetime adventures. But is there more for us to do to help Nepal back on its feet than by simply providing aid for rebuilding? Many in the mountaineering community feel that the earthquakes were the final straws that broke the camel’s back. They argue that while rebuilding is essential, it’s also high time to address the socio-economic difficulties and inequalities facing Sherpa communities today.

Extreme adventure has captured the imagination of mainstream audiences. Earlier this year, we saw live action cameras set up at the base of El Capitan, all eyes fixed on two climbers making a difficult ascent that most could barely grasp the concept of. Publications like The New York Times, Men’s Journal and Vanity Fair have all featured articles on mountain athletes once thought to be only popular in the niche outdoor adventure market. “Branded content” has blurred the lines between advertising and adventure filmmaking. Does mainstream media attention compromise the success of teams during expeditions and hinder the authenticity of adventure, or does it contribute to it? AND INTERNATIONAL JURY The 2015 Banff Mountain Film Competition saw 350 films submitted from 34 countries. One of the most difficult jobs at any competitive festival is choosing the winners. This process starts with our pre-screening committee, who viewed ALL 350 films. From these, 89 finalists were selected.

This year’s Festival features over 50 World and North American premieres.

During the Festival, our international jury – selected to represent a range of knowledge and experience in film production, distribution, film criticism, and mountaineering and exploration – screens each finalist and determines the award winners.

A sincere thank you goes to each of them for helping us ensure that fine filmmaking is recognized and rewarded, and that our Festival programming continues to be of the finest quality. The awards are announced on Sunday evening, November 8, in the Eric Harvie Theatre. The winners will be announced online at banffmountainfestival.ca.

ALDO AUDISIO (ITA) Also Audisio is the director of the Museo Nazionale della Montagna in Turin, Italy and the coordinator of the International Alliance for Mountain Film. The museum houses national and international exhibits linking the world’s mountain ranges through a cultural focus. For more than 35 years, Audisio has promoted mountain film around the world, and has created the collection of the Museum’s Cinema Documentation and Historical Film Library.

SARAH HUENIKEN (CAN) Sarah Hueniken is passionate about climbing in all its forms. She is a leading guide in rock, ice and alpine climbing from Canmore, AB. Her guiding and courses focus on teaching women the skills necessary to be independent in the mountains and in alpine environments. She recently teamed up with Will Gadd for the first ascent of Niagara Falls, and she has numerous other first ascents on ice and mixed routes around the world.

DINA MUFTI (UK) Dina Mufti is a full-time documentary director and sometime actor and photographer. She is best known for the BBC series’ Earth’s Natural Wonders and Human Planet, and observational pieces What Do Artists Do All Day? and Trawlermen – the UK version of the Deadliest Catch.

Uniting this work is a strong eye for character which has earned her a BBC Director General award for creativity. She is currently working on a major BBC series exploring the culture and wildlife of the world’s best known mountain ranges.

PETER POPALL (GER) Peter Popall has worked for the Petzl Company for more than 30 years, working his way up through their sales, development, and marketing, technical information and communications departments and is now the director of brand management and Vice President. Over these years, Popall participated along with Paul Petzl and the Petzl team in the development of modern mountaineering equipment. He is also a certified mountain guide and ski instructor with a strong passion for mountaineering.

CORY RICHARDS (USA) Cory Richards is renowned and respected for his soulful approach to alpinism, adventure and visual storytelling. Having traveled to the far reaches of the globe, Richards made a name for himself in 2011 when he climbed Pakistan’s Gasherbrum II, making him the first American to summit an 8,000-meter peak during winter. He would go on to create a documentary about his experience and take home the coveted Grand Prize at the 2011 Banff Mountain Film & Book Festival for his film, Cold. Named National Geographic adventurer of the year in 2012, he has embarked on mountain explorations from Antarctica to the Himalayas, capturing stunning photographs that shed new light on people, places and cultures at the edges of the Earth.

AND INTERNATIONAL JURY The 22nd annual Banff Mountain Book Competition saw one of the largest number of entries ever submitted and was an exceptional year for quality work.

Our diligent volunteer readers helped narrow down the long list of category finalists from 139 books in six categories, before the international jury went to work to determine the award winners.

Harry Vandervlist edited Jon Whyte: Mind Over Mountains, Selected and Collected Poems in 2000. He publishes magazine articles and scholarly writing on mountain literature, which he also teaches in the English Department at the University of Calgary.

Over the past ten years, Harry has taught several mountain literature courses which bring university students to the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, and has often served as a panelist and moderator at Festival events. His reviews and essays have appeared in the Globe and Mail, Quill and Quire, AlbertaViews, Avenue, and Swerve (where his mock expedition journal “The MacLeod Trail Expedition� won a Western Magazine Award).

Majka Burhardt has a passion for creating unusual connections. As an author, professional climber, filmmaker, and entrepreneur, Majka has spent two decades exploring the globe - usually by hand and foot - and her stories of challenge, humanity, and the fine line between extreme and acceptable risk inspire and challenge audiences around the world.

Victor Saunders became a member of the International Federation of Mountain Guides in 1996 after a career as an architect in London.

He relocated to Chamonix, France, and became a member of the National Syndicate of French Mountain Guides (SNGM) in 2003.

Majka is the author of Coffee Story: Ethiopia and Vertical Ethoipia: Climbing Toward Possibility in the Horn of Africa.

Majka has an MFA in Creative Writing from the Warren Wilson Program for Writers and received her BA in Anthropology from Princeton University. She is an ambassador/athlete for Patagonia, Osprey Packs, Positive Tracks, Petzl, Scarpa, and Julbo. She is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Rock Guide and her writing has been featured in numerous magazines.

Victor has invested a lot of expedition time in the Karakoram and Himalaya, and recently calculated that he has now spent five years of his life in a tent.

Some of these adventures have appeared in print. When not working or writing, he spends his time cooking for friends and family, and clambering on steep little bits of rock.

Victor has written four books: Elusive Summits: Four Expeditions in the Karakoram which won the Boardman Tasker prize in 1991, Trekking and Climbing in the Andes, No Place to Fall, and Alpes Occidentales: Trekking y Alpinismo.

SUMMIT OF EXCELLENCE AWARD 2015

When asked what it takes to be a good photographer, Lemire replied: “The only difference is the motivation and passion.

You have to be a little bit crazy, passionate and driven.”

“My passion for photography has always been more with people than with scenery,” said Lemire.

“The photos I have taken have been hugely influenced by the places I’ve been and the people I’ve met. I’ve been fortunate throughout my life to have met people who channel and help me.”

PIERRE LEMIRE’S prolific career working as a certified mountain guide and photographer in the Rockies happened almost by chance.

As a teenager growing up in Quebec, Lemire was inspired by men of the mountains, and holds Frank Smythe, the British mountaineer, writer and explorer as an inspirational figure in his early life.

Initially a portrait and street photographer, Lemire’s fascination with mountain landscapes and communities drew him to the Rocky Mountains from Quebec in 1965. Upon arrival in Alberta, the 18-year-old Lemire started work as a store man at the Chateau Lake Louise and later at the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House – a move which was to prove both pivotal and instrumental for what was set to happen in the next 50 or so years of his life as a mountaineer and photographer in the Rockies.

During this time he fell in love with mountain life and a few years later managed to get a job

as a lift operator at the Lake Louise ski area. He had found his calling. Soon Lemire was learning about avalanches, and took his first course to become an assistant guide with Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) in 1971. He worked for the following three years in avalanche control in Rogers Pass and by 1974 was a certified mountain guide with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG). Soon after his certification, he started to work for CMH as a heli-skiing guide where he quickly progressed through the ranks, and from 1980 to 1990 Lemire also worked as an Examiner for the ACMG. Throughout this time he continued to pursue his love for photography, a hobby he developed as a child. “Photography was my passion, definitely as much as I liked mountaineering and skiing,” he said. “It also was a fantastic opportunity for me to take photographs.”

Lemire’s love of photographing people and mountains led him to travel the world and document it through the lens..

Lemire’s work has appeared in Canadian Summits, Equniox, and the Faces of Canada exhibit. Lemire, who now lives in Field, British Columbia, is most proud of his work which appeared in The Hills of Nepal exhibit at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies in 2000 featuring intimate photographs of men, women and children taken over the course of three visits to the foothills of the Himalaya.

His photo of Bugaboo Spire is featured on the cover of Voices from the Summit, published by National Geographic Society in collaboration with The Banff Centre to commemorate 25 years of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival in 2000.
