Smithden Shottle Aphrodite!

A past county winner in 2019, Aphrodite was a remarkable cow whose combined beauty and utility brought her to the top of the provincial

Heart of the Herd standings for 2021. In Aphrodite’s nine lactations, she made 127,492 kgs of milk, with a BCA of 262-259-262. As a fiveyear-old, she made 14,993 kgs in 305 days. As a three-year-old, she made 17,377 kgs, earning her a Superior Lactation award.

Scoring 81 points as Two-year-old, Aphrodite quickly developed into a well-balanced cow who could do it all, with a 92-point Mammary

System, 93-point Rump, 94-point Feet & Legs and 96 points in Dairy

Strength. By her third calving, she had reached VG-85 and shot up to an EX-91 after her fourth calf. She settled in at EX-93 points in her fifth lactation, consistently adding an “E” to her score each year until her final classification in July of 2020.

Aphrodite’s dam, Smithden Allen Alison VG-88 33* is synonymous with the Smithden name and was influential in earning the Smith family their second Master Breeder shield in 2010. One of the breed’s outstanding brood cows, Alison was famous in her own right, with nominations for Global and Canadian Cow of the Year in 2012.

Aphrodite leaves behind 11 daughters (several by ET) including two

Very Good daughters by Uno and Big Kahuna and five Excellent daughters, the highest of which were sired by Atwood and Bolton (EX92 and EX-91 respectively). Her place as the 2021 province-wide Heart of the Herd winner is a small nod to the outstanding cow she was in her time.

THIS COMPETITION RECOGNIZES THOSE ANIMALS THAT PRODUCE YEAR-AFTER-YEAR, BREEDING BACK WITH EASE, HITTING EXTREME LACTATION NUMBERS AND RACKING UP MULTIPLE EXCELLENT SCORES. IN 2021, A TOTAL OF 6,308 ANIMALS QUALIFIED FOR THE COMPETITION.

All animals Bred & Owned by an Ontario Member are eligible, no entry required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Animals meeting the below minimum requirements are assigned points as per the formula, with the top number of points awarded being declared the winner.

1. Must be classified 85 or higher. 2. Must have produced at least 60,000kg lifetime. 3. Must be alive in the year of competition (determined by lactations and/or calvings occurring in the year in question).

FORMULA:

• Classification: 5 points awarded for scoring 85, with 1 point added for every point above 85, and 1 point added for every ME. • Longtime Production: 6 points awarded to a cow that has 60,000kg, one extra point awarded for every 10,000kg over 60,000kg. • Lactations: awarded 1 point per lactation. • Superior Lactations & Progeny: awarded 1 point per superior lactation and 1 point for every son/daughter that has scored VG/EX, to a combined cap of 10 points. • All-Ontario: 1 point for every All-Ontario nomination in milking form.

Tie-Breaker: Most kgs. Lifetime Butterfat.
