heritage is maintained. The Texas Longhorn is a vital part of the history of Texas. For over a century, Longhorns have roamed the area that is now Big Bend Ranch State Park. Ancestors of the Texas Longhorn date back to 1521 when Gregorio de Villalobos brought thirty heifers and three bull calves to North America from Spain. Longhorn cattle on Big Bend Ranch can be traced back to the 1860’s. With this in mind, the group descended upon the State capitol to support the legislation to keep the herd. While there, State Representative “Doc” Anderson crafted a Resolution honoring the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America for its upcoming 50 years of history. CEO Mike Coston, Bernard Lankford, Karol Schreiner, H.C. Carter and T.M. Smith were privileged enough to be present on the House Floor to receive H.R. No. 2116 as it was read by the Speaker of the House, the Honorable Joe Strauss. In addition to H.R. No. 2116, we received photographs of the group from the official State Capitol photographer and State Representative presented the TLBAA with the Texas State Flag that was flown over the Capitol that historic day for TLBAA. We are thinking about putting it up for auction to help our building fund campaign for our new building. We were so fortunate to have many of our TLBAA members attend that historical day in Austin and meet many of the lawmakers who are truly interested in our industry. A couple of the House of Representative members display head and shoulder mounts of Longhorns in their office and lead us to their office to show them off. In fact, I think they were as excited for us to be there as we were. Thanks to all the breeders who attended and showed their support for the reading of the Resolution announcing our 50 years of existence in 2014. It was a beautiful day. Please be sure to read through the H.R. No. 2116 included in this Trails article.
