Mosser Family Scholarships
The Mosser Family Memorial Fund was established by Rex Mosser, Midway, Texas, to honor the memory of his wife, Vicki, and their son, Phillip. Other TLBAA members added to the initial funding, and donation heifers at various sales continue to be auctioned to benefit the fund, which is administered by Dr. Zech Dameron. “The scholarships started in 2006,” said Mosser. “Vicki died in January 2006 and Phillip, my son had died a few months before in 2005. Bill Hudson decided he wanted to donate a cow and start a scholarship in Vicki’s honor. He donated the cow (at the Legacy Sale) and we collected $100,000 that night.” Some of the first $100,000 rolled over to the next year. More donated animals were sold and re-sold. “We try to keep a little bit of grades.” “There are three money in there all the time,” said Mosser. “Whatever the cow sells for at the Legacy, plus whatever donations come in. Hopefully we will requirements – a transcript of do better this year and get more money than last year. You know, last your high school grades – or college grades, year was a rough year for people, so we didn’t get as much as normal for that matter – a short life plan, and a recommendation from a school counselor or a teacher. We like to have some connecso we couldn’t give out as much as normal.” “I think we gave out seventeen scholarships one year and the least tion to cattle, but they don’t have to be a show competitor. That will number was seven. It depends on the available money and on how show up in the application. Grades are important – if we get down where we don’t have enough money, grades would most likely get it.” many kids apply for it.” “There’s a committee of three, I being one of them. Buck Adams, Funds are disbursed directly to institutions for books, tuition and dorm. Individual students have zero access to that money. The kids Rob Fenza and I are the scholarship committee. I make a copy of all apply for the money, and if their request complies with the criteria, it the applications, mail them copies, then we have a conference call and make decisions. This year I’ve got about ten applicants, so the is sent to the institution which applies it for the stated purpose. According to Mosser, the stipends are not for specified courses of awards won’t be as lucrative as they have been in the past.” The main fund raisers are at the Legacy Sale and the TLMA World study; the student can be enrolled in anything that they prefer. “As long as they are going to college, it could be nursing, to be a Championship. The Mosser scholarship is under the Texas Longhorn vet, for accounting, general business or anything. We want the kids to Foundation, so contributors are eligible to get a tax deduction. The Mosser scholarships have been awarded to about fifty recipibe good in whatever they want to be good at.” “I would love to see more participation where we could help the ents, and often will be influenced by need in addition to grades. “I like to help people when I can,” said Zech. “I have been lucky kids more. I’m 74 years old, so it’s not going to help my kids or my family – that’s not it. We are out to help the Longhorn people and the in life, so I am all for continuing the scholarship if we can raise money. The last auction, I bought Longhorn families and the kids. I don’t care how much money the parents have, it’s all up to the child. We want to help the child and in turn if that helps the parents, that’s fine.
