Did you know? The Women’s Basketball team is the only squad at Texas Tech which may properly be referred to as the “Lady Raiders” as Texas Tech’s nickname is the Red Raiders. For sports where there is both a men’s and women’s program and one needs to make a distinction between the genders, it is appropriate to refer to a women’s team as the Lady Raiders, but the name of the sport should always follow, unless one is referring to the Women’s Basketball team. For example, it is the Lady Raiders Cross Country team, Lady Raiders Golf team, Lady Raiders Tennis team and Lady Raiders Track & Field teams (both indoor or outdoor), while a reference to the “Lady Raiders” without a sport following it would mean Women’s Basketball. There is no male squad counterpart for Soccer, Softball or Volleyball at Texas Tech so those sports teams should be referred to as the Red Raiders.
