NOTES Catchy melodies with fresh harmonies propelled by captivating rhythms can make for engaging musical encounters. Loosely written in the fashion of a young Mozart, A Little Malletmusik seeks to capture a similar stylistic charm.

Recognizing scales and chord progressions are invaluable when reading music. Every major key has a relative minor key that shares the same key signature. (The tonic of the relative minor can be found by identifying the sixth degree of the major scale.) A Little Malletmusik begins in A minor. The chorus at letter B (and letter D), however, is in the relative key of C Major.

Many of the chord progressions found in music dating from before the Baroque period up to the pop tunes of today are based on simple triads (3-note chords). For example, the chorus at letter B (and letter D) is built on three-bar phrases—one measure each of C Major, F Major and G Major—then repeated. Understanding basic chords is a huge step towards the ultimate goal of reading music in large groups of notes, as opposed to one note at a time.

Medium mallets will work well for all instruments in this context. Also, it should be noted that this piece can be performed by three players on one marimba (4-octave, low C). To do so, the original glockenspiel part should be played two octaves higher than written and the original xylophone part one octave higher than written.

Either way, be sure to maintain a delightful character throughout!

PLAYERS AND INSTRUMENTATION A Little Malletmusik requires three players with the following instrumentation: • Glockenspiel • Xylophone • Marimba (4-octave)* * Alternatively, this piece can be performed with all three players sharing a 4-octave marimba.
