background and instrumentation La Forza del Destino was arranged for the Springs Valley Jr./Sr. High School Percussion Ensemble in French Lick, IN. This piece provides a wonderful opportunity to perform and discuss the format and form of an opera overture. The piece incorporates several musical styles that range from fast and technically demanding passages to lyrical, sustained melodies. It is a very exciting piece that explores the classical music possibilities of the modern percussion ensemble. I hope you enjoy! - L. A.

• Glockenspiel • Xylophone • Vibraphone • Marimba 1 (low-A) • Marimba 2 (low-A) • Marimba 3 (low-A) • Chimes • Timpani (23”, 26”, 29”) • Perc. 1: Snare Drum, Finger Cymbals • Perc. 2: Bass Drum • Perc. 3: China Cymbal, Suspended Cymbal (on stands) • Perc. 4: Gong, Crash Cymbals (Pair), Wind Chimes • Perc. 5: Crash Cymbal, Tambourine, Sleigh Bells, Triangle, Gong (shared w/perc. 4) • Synthesizer/Crotales - Optional
performance notes Optional Synthesizer and Crotales The synthesizer and crotales are optional for the performance. However, the synthesizer provides an amplified bass voice for the ensemble. If you choose to use a synth, be sure to watch the volume level to ensure it’s balanced with the ensemble. The crotales add volume and additional texture to the metallic melodic line at measure 43. Xylophone Use medium plastic mallets. Yarn mallets may be substituted at measure 108 if the plastic mallets are too harsh. Vibraphone Use medium-soft mallets. Pedal markings are not indicated, but should be performed instinctively according to natural phrasing.
suggested setup
Marimbas Use medium-hard mallets. The performers may opt to change to softer mallets in measures 108 through 118. Timpani Use medium (general) mallets. Tuning recommendations are made at various points throughout the piece based on drum size. Percussion 3 Suspended cymbal rolls should be performed with yarn or cord mallets. The various crashes should be played with a snare drum stick.
