Friends is a marimba duet that allows two people to come together and make music with minimal equipment requirements. All that is needed is a single marimba (4.3 or larger) and two musicians. The piece does not require virtuosity; however, it does require skills that any quality performance would need: expression, communication, artistry, and emotion. Performing music with others creates friendships that last lifetimes. It transcends all barriers of language, culture, ideology, and status. We are fortunate to have music in our lives. PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS Friends can be played by two people in any of the following combinations: • • • •
Two experienced percussionists Two intermediate percussionists One intermediate and one beginning percussionist One intermediate percussionist and one non-percussionist musician
Friend 1 is a two-mallet part that does not require a large amount of technical ability. Friend 2 is a four-mallet part with an intermediate skill set.
Friends requires a 4.3-octave (low A) marimba or larger. Medium to medium-hard mallets are the ideal choice. However, the performers are encouraged to experiment to create their own personal soundscape. The smaller noteheads in parentheses at measures 57 and 60 are optional additions that can be played on a 4.5-octave marimba (low F or larger) if available. This piece represents a synopsis of a friendship. Friend 1 starts the piece with the main theme while Friend 2 supports underneath. At letter A, Friend 2 takes over the theme, and at letter B, both parts come together. At letter C, the music feels distant, just as friendships may become over the passage of time. The mood is somber and lonely. Letter D brings a change of spirit, and the motion of Friend 2 reunites our friends, which is reflected at letter E. Letter F to the end symbolizes a period of reflection and gratitude.
