NOTES First Things First is a collection of five snare drum solos, two duets, and one trio. The solos are presented in a logical progression for step-by-step learning of the techniques that are included in the pieces. The first piece, First Things First, is the most basic in the collection but should not be attempted until the student can perform a 9-stroke roll. All rolls in this collection may be performed as open or closed rolls. I leave this to the discretion of the teacher. The only exceptions are the rolls in the intro to Eagle’s Flight…because of the slow tempo these rolls should be played as closed. The inclusion of duets and a trio allow students to begin an early journey into “chamber music,” in which players comprise small ensembles. This type of small ensemble setting requires an increased awareness toward inter-player communication and is a critical skill in live musicmaking. For these duets and trio, the score has been layed out in such a way that no page turns will be necessary. Each player will use their own original copy of the book and would read their corresponding part directly from the score. In the trio, Three’s Company, the third part is designed to be optional. If this is performed with only the top two parts, the four-bar phrase at measure 25 should be omitted. With all of the pieces, please exaggerate the dynamics. Aim to play the “softs” very soft. Dynamic contrast is so important to making effective musical performances. All of the notes that are to be played on the rim should be played on the forward rim (away from the player), and all stick clicks should be played out in front of the player. Most importantly, HAVE FUN with these pieces!
