When I wrote The First Steps In A New Direction I had just finished my first year in the percussion program at the University of Oregon studying under Charles Dowd and Sean Wagoner. As a high school student, I hated mallet instruments and would avoid them like the plague. I was a true drummer, but that first year at U of O I had fallen in love with the marimba in a big way. I told my mother I wanted to stay in Eugene over the summer so I could be close to the marimba and she said, “Will you come home for the summer if I buy you a marimba?” I think that marked the beginning of my musical career.

I moved home and went crazy practicing all summer. Since I was still terrible at reading melodic music I would just make things up. I came up with this cool riff and just worked really hard at developing it. I decided that I wanted to perform my new piece in a performance jury that next year and so I wrote it out. Unfortunately I wrote it out by hand on staff paper that I made myself out of regular notebook paper. It was so unreadable that Charles and the other judges couldn’t tell if I was even playing what was on the page. I don’t remember what he said, but I remember getting low marks. Nonetheless, this piece has remained a steady part of my repertoire and also appeared on my first solo marimba album “Melodies for Wooden Children.”
