Program Notes With Echo Funk, I wanted to feature the hard-hitting and groove-laden elements of drumset performance in a more “industrial” sonic environment. Combining inspiration from seminal works such as Cage’s First Construction and Rouse’s Bonham, the overall sound palate combines a large selection of mostly drums and metal instruments (often found objects) working to create a raucous conversation between the drumset soloist and the eight percussionists. The “echo” motif presented at the beginning of the work weaves its way through the piece as a defining element, often creating the illusion of faster and slower tempi through patterns which sometimes overlap and cycle over the bar line. Subsequent variations of this motivic element are superimposed against various drumset pockets (also moving in and out of different time feels) which create varying degrees of rhythmic tension between the soloist and ensemble.

Performance Notes When marked with a diminuendo, the various rhythms found in the metal parts are intended to have an echoing effect. To create this effect, each successive note in the figure should diminuendo so that the last note is almost inaudible. All figures marked with a diminuendo should be executed this way, regardless of the length of the rhythm or its starting point in the measure. The two opera gongs should be placed flat on a table on top of egg crate or other foam and played with the butt ends of snare drum sticks. They should not be hung or mounted vertically. Sound should be trashy and metallic, and somewhat dry. Because Echo Funk requires the use of nonspecific metal sounds, each ensemble is encouraged to be creative with its selections. Each metal sound chosen should be as unique and distinct as possible. However, the metal sounds chosen for player 1 and player 8 should be not too wide in pitch or too distinct in articulation. Along with drum selection and tuning, this will guarantee a unique and distinct sound with each performance. Since the metal sounds chosen are likely to be unique to each performance, choose implements that will bring out the full potential of each metalic instrument. These may include the back end of snare drum sticks, a hard plastic or brass mallet, or a small metal implement like a triangle beater. For Player 3, the lower three drums (2 snare drums & low bongo) should be tuned to sound homogenous while the high bongo should be tuned slightly higher and more cutting.
The concert toms should be tune`d so there is a clear separation of higher and lower toms between Player 4 and Player 5, but avoid the use of very small toms (6”, 8”, etc.) if possible for player 4. Choose toms that have a fat “drumset” sound. The congas and timbales for Player 6 should be tuned to create a somewhat homogenous sound. The goal is to have a drum set up with four pitches, that has two pairs (timbales/congas) of slightly different timbres. This may mean tuning the timbales down to the congas or tuning the congas up to the timbales to achieve this goal, possibly tuning them slightly out of what might be their ideal tuning range if used conventionally. The congas and timbales should be tuned in such a way that the overall sound is not too low or flabby on any of the drums, nor should the timbale timbre be too bright in the set up. The articulation of this set of drums should be dryer than the tom-tom set ups, which should be “wetter” and “fatter.” At Letter N, all percussion players (except drumset) improvise playing very soft double press buzz gestures on any drum in their setup. Improvise gestures only using partials of a quarter note triplet rhythm in a soft fashion, with each gesture providing an echoing effect. Players may enter or exit on any partial of the quarter note triplet rhythm (see example below) and gestures may vary between shorter and longer while ensuring ample space exists between each gestures so other players can interject and dialog, musically. The resulting effect should be a texture where players interact and sometimes overlap each other at different points in a soft “echoed” murmer behind the drumset. In this section players may choose to play a gesture on a metal instrument, but only sparingly. The overall sound palate here should be mostly drums.
