A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER Chemical Songs is a collection of eight progressive two-mallet solos for the developing keyboard percussionist. Moving from one etude to the next, students will gain a sense of the methodical approach as different musical concepts are carefully introduced and developed. The optional audio accompaniment tracks enhance the practice and performance experience and are encouraged if the technology is available. Each solo in the collection fits on a standard size marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, and some even on a glockenspiel, so feel free to experiment and discover which solo/instrument combinations you like best! It is my hope that this collection will provide students and teachers with fun and enriching supplemental material to use at home or in the classroom.

OPTIONAL AUDIO ACCOMPANIMENT Affixed to the inside back cover of this collection, you’ll find a CD-ROM containing various audio files that can be used to enhance practice and performance by adding optional audio accompaniment to the solos. To utilize these audio accompaniment tracks, some extra equipment will be necessary so the performer can monitor a click track while the audience hears only the accompaniment (without the click). Audio system requirements: • • • • •
Computer (Mac or PC) Multitrack DAW software (Logic, ProTools, Digital Performer, Cubase, Live, etc.) Audio interface with at least 4 channels of output Powered speakers for the audience (or passive speakers with an amplifier) Monitor headphones for the performer
The following audio files are included for each piece: • Audio accompaniment only • Audio accompaniment with click • Click track only Setup 1 (simplest) Using channels 1 and 2, route the stereo “Audio accompaniment with click” track to the performer’s headphones. Using channels 3 and 4, route the stereo “Audio accompaniment only” track to the house speakers. This method will provide the soloist with what he/she needs to hear in order to match tempo with the accompaniment track, while the audience simply gets to enjoy the combined sound of the solo and accompaniment together. Setup 2 (most versatile) Using channels 1 and 2, route the “Click track only” track to the performer’s headphones. Using channels 3 and 4, route the “Audio accompaniment only” track to the house speakers with the addition of a ‘bus’ to send the signal to channels 1 and 2 (the performer’s headphones). This method yields the same result as the first with the added benefit of the performer being able to adjust his/her volume balance of click to accompaniment. Reference Tracks (solos only and full mixes) These are simply reference tracks that allow you to hear how the solos sound on a variety of instruments with or without accompaniment. These tracks are for reference only and are not intended to be used during live performance.
