by RYAN MARTINEZ

LOCATED IN: Sausalito.

DISTANCE: 5.3-mile loop.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate; heavily trafficked.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: November marks the tailend of raptor season, so bring some binoculars! Dress in layers, and don’t forget water and sunscreen, as there’s very little shade. A parking lot is available at Rodeo Beach, and dogs are allowed when leashed.

WHY WE LOVE IT: This hike sums up the beauty of the Bay Area in all its magnificence: stunning coastal views, a piece of Cold War history, valleys, lagoons, and the tip of the quintessential Golden Gate Bridge.

TRAIL NOTES: Remember to respect the trail and practice Leave No Trace ethics.

FUEL UP: Whether you choose to enjoy a full feast, small snack, or casual inbetween nosh, Salito’s Crab House & Prime Rib (salitoscrabhouse.com) delivers with a range of seafood, sandwiches, salads, and more. Another bonus of dining at this Sausalito favorite? The seaside setting ensures picture-perfect views.

Remnants of the Cold War

While hiking the trail, you’ll witness an important site in Cold War history: Hill 88. Serving as a radar station for the SF-88L missile launch area, Hill 88 housed all the radar equipment used to detect threats and was responsible for steering and tracking missiles launched from the site. Make sure to take note as you pass it along the trail!
