cAM PA I G N U P DAT E Campaign Scholarship Goal Exceeded A Special Destiny: The Campaign for St. Edward’s University has raised almost $12 million for student scholarships, exceeding the $10.5 million goal. To celebrate the achievement, Trustee Pat, ’97, and Bill Munday hosted a reception for more than 100 scholarship donors and student scholarship recipients on March 28 at Barton Creek Country Club.

Curran Finds Many Ways to Give As a math professor, he gave knowledge to curious minds. As facilities manager, he gave campus buildings a sound structure for repeated renovations. Now Henry Curran has given to St. Edward’s again, this time with a deferred gift of $300,000. Curran, a former Holy Cross Brother who taught as a pre-engineering and math professor at St. Edward’s in the 1950s to mid-1960s before departing for a teaching post at Catholic University’s School of Engineering in Washington, D.C., made his gift in the name of all Holy Cross Brothers who have served at St. Edward’s.

Saunders Family Foundation Makes Gifts Totaling $50,000 Through the support of their children and grandchildren, the Charles and Betti Saunders Foundation made two signifi cant commitments to St. Edward’s this spring. Cindy Saunders Buggs and her son, Ian Forrest Smith, ’03, MAC ’05, recommended a gift of $25,000 to create a fellowship for students pursuing an MA in Counseling. Additionally, Steve Saunders, a member of the university’s Gift Planning Advisory Council, together with his wife, Pat, and children Ian and Kate, recommended a gift of $25,000 for the women’s softball team.

Attention Alumni! Alumni of St. Edward’s are supporting The St. Edward’s Fund in record numbers again this year, but the fund still needs donations from approximately 900 more alumni to reach the university’s goal of 15 percent participation by June 30, the end of the fi scal year. Because the number of alumni who give plays a part in determining national rankings, every gift from a St. Edward’s graduate — no matter how large or small — helps bring the university closer to a bump in the rankings. St. Edward’s Associates Grows The St. Edward’s Associates began with just 32 charter members in 1981. Now, 25 years later, 350 alumni, friends and parents of students belong to this group that support St. Edward’s each year with gifts of $1,000 or more. Despite this growth, St. Edward’s needs approximately 60 more donors to reach its goal and continue a level of support that has positively impacted the university’s quality of programs, services and scholarships over the years. EDITOR’S LETTER One thing I’ve learned in my short time as editor of St. Edward’s tor of University Magazine: When Magazine: you choose “Special Effects” as a theme, prepare yourself for lots of jokes in cover meetings. As the staff dreamed up fleets of UFOs hovering over Main Building, a 3-D Topper, the mascot, duking it out with bad guys outside Trustee Hall, and Sorin Oak morphing into a laughing, merry tree person, I knew this was the right job for me. Actually, I exaggerate. The issue itself is what really sold me on being a part of St. Edward’s. Getting together the stories of the “Special Effects” section (starting on page 15) and seeing the different ways the university has affected its students, faculty, alumni and the world at large helped me understand why everybody finds this place so special. When it comes to preparing for the changes in store for a chosen career, finding a source of empowerment to overcome the obstacles faced in life, setting out to make the world a better place, or ending up transformed in unexpected ways, St. Edward’s provides. The staff and I may not have had the chance to give Topper and Sorin Oak a cinematic makeover, but we did start to tinker a bit with the format of this publication. To highlight the breadth of accomplishment that comes out of the St. Edward’s community, we’ve reorganized the front of the magazine, giving separate pages to stories focused on news, the arts, the research of students and faculty, and sports (just in time for one of the best men’s and women’s basketball seasons in years). We’ve changed names of a few regular features and added some new ones as well. Consider what follows a sneak peek at a redesign we’ll execute next issue, part of a broader effort to make these pages more accessible, engaging and pertinent to you as a part of the extended family of St. Edward’s.
