LEAGUE HEAD-TO-HEAD: POR 2 wins, 6 goals … KC 4 wins, 9 goals … Ties 2 2015 HEAD-TO-HEAD: POR 0 wins, 0 goals … KC 1 win, 1 goal … Ties 2 PROVIDENCE PARK: 9/9: POR 0, KC 0 10/3: POR 0, KC 1 (Nemeth 83) MLS CUP PLAYOFFS: First meeting. The Timbers make their return to the MLS Cup Playoffs under scintillating form, having won three games in a row, and having scored nine goals over their last two matches. The Timbers had scored 10 goals total over their previous 13 matches, dating back to the start of July. "We get three wins in a row and now we are the three seed. We’re not just getting in, we are not just satisfied with getting in, and that was never the case. We are in the playoffs in a position of strength which means we get a home game. Nothing is guaranteed but it gives us a good chance to make a run here," said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. "I think with the way the guys are playing right now, I wouldn’t bet against them because we are getting the balance right. We’ve defended well all year, but now we are scoring goals. When you get those things right and you get momentum heading into the playoffs, you like your chances.” ... The win was also the first at Providence Park since August for the Timbers, snapping a four-game winless run. ... Darlington Nagbe concluded the season with second career two-goal game (the first coming March 31, 2012 vs. Real Salt Lake). Nagbe also added an assist; over the final two games, he had three goals and the assist. "To be effective as an attacker you’ve got to create and produce goals and he’s showing that now in addition to keeping the ball and helping us with possession and causing problems for the opponent," said Porter. "He’s causing problems by scoring. He’s stepped up. He’s not waiting for things to happen he’s making them happen and that’s what makes him scary when he plays like that.” ... Jorge Villafana scored his first league goal of the season in the finale -- marking now six consecutive seasons where he's scored one goal over the league campaign. ... Fanendo Adi scored his 16th goal, now with a goal in three consecutive games, with four goals over that time. Adi has six goals over the last five games (with a pair of two-goal outings in that span). ... Rodney Wallace recorded an assist for a second consecutive game, his third assist in the last five matches, all since he returned to the starting lineup in an attacking wide role. Sporting put an end to a two-game losing run in securing their place in the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, reaching the postseason for a fifth consecutive season. Over the course of this season we've been extremely competitive. I also think that there is a mental toughness in our group that is at times incredible, and at times maybe we've been a little inconsistent with it. ... What I do think is that whenever it's time that we have to get something done, we have been pretty good at the plate," said Sporting manager Peter Vermes. ... The main talking point immediately prior to the match was the dropping of Benny Feilhaber to the substitutes' bench. Feilhaber came on at halftime -- and his assist set up the match-winning goal that sent Sporting through. "I don't think he had enough in his gas tank to go 90 minutes. Better to use him in the second half and come on and do what he did. ... It was a decision based off of physical data from the last game, it was based on watching video from the last game, it was based on a lot of different variables. But at the end of the day, for us I know it was the right decision," said Vermes. ... Feilhaber ended the season with 15 assists, second-most in the league, behind Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco. Feilhaber recorded 20 assists in all competitions for Sporting this season, a club record. ... Kevin Ellis scored his fourth goal of the season, his first since Aug. 15, netting the opener -- the first goal scored by Sporting in three matches, snapping a 225-minute goalless drought. ... Dom Dwyer netted his 12th goal of the season, his first since Sept. 27. He has 34 goals in 64 games over the last two seasons in league play. "We have some incredible attacking players as well, and Dom's finish -- the way he made his run, his calmness in the box -- it was a little like Houston a couple years ago when we won the [Eastern Conference Championship in 2013]. Calmness and experience -- everything came into play." Said Dwyer: "I knew Benny was looking for me. He's our playmaker; he's a guy who can find that pass. So I knew I just had to make a good run and try to stay onside. I knew he'd find me a pass and I'd finish it off."
