CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PRIMER The CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) is the Confederation’s annual club championship. It was inaugurated in the 2008-2009 season, replacing the Champions’ Cup, which had decided the region’s best team since 1962. Featuring 24 squads from CONCACAF’s three sub-regions -- North America, Central America and the Caribbean -- the CCL is now played in two stages: the Group Stage and Championship Stage. Sporting KC qualified as 2013 MLS Cup champions and is the only U.S.-based team competing in the tournament for a second straight year. Berths are allocated by country or, in the case of the Caribbean, by region: North America (9 Teams) Mexico: 4 (Leon, America, Pachuca, Cruz Azul) United States: 4 (Sporting KC, NY Red Bulls, Portland Timbers, D.C. United) Canada: 1 (Montreal Impact) Central America (12 Teams) Costa Rica: 3* (Alajuelense, Saprissa, Herediano) El Salvador: 2 (Isidro Metapan, FAS) Guatemala: 2 (Comunicaciones, Municipal) Honduras: 2 (Real Espana, Olimpia) Panama: 2 (Tauro, Chorrillo) Nicaragua: 1 (Real Estelí) Caribbean (3 Teams)** Puerto Rico: 1 (Puerto Rico Bayamon FC) Jamaica: 1 (Waterhouse) Guyana: 1 (Alpha United) * Due to incompliant stadiums, Belize’s berth was replaced by a 3rd berth to Costa Rica for the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League **Determined through a Caribbean qualifying tournament
