OtrO tipO de lujO A Different KinD of Luxury

“What exactly are we talking about?” I thought to myself when I was invited on a “luxury trip to Ecuador.” Before I could voice my question, my host continued: “I promise you won’t regret it.” A bit hesitant, I accepted. My curiosity was stronger than any trepidation I might have felt. Besides, the chance to explore Ecuador isn’t an opportunity you get every day. Southeast of Quito, the jungle, canoe trips, wild animals and indigenous communities awaited me: Parque Nacional Yasuní, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, in all its splendor. I arrived late in the day – it was nearly dark – and I was soaking wet, but a torrential tropical rain had never felt so good. To get a unique perspective on the world, I rested in the hammock outside my cabin, a symphony of birds, insects and trees playing in the background. The next morning, I received a flawless welcome: an ancient tea ceremony performed by the Kichwa Añangu community, complete with chanting and meditation. So simple, so wild, so human. The rest of the trip was just as impressive. Sailing alongside pink dolphins and zip-lining through the jungle canopy were my favorite adventures, but what had the most impact on me, more than any activity, was the lush and vibrant Amazon, where there’s no time for clocks, television or cellphones. Here, what matters is your flashlight, compass, bug repellent and hat. It’s about breathing deeply and getting up before sunrise. On my way back from the jungle, Cuenca awaited with an invitation to a traditional Ecuadorian meal hosted by one of the most prominent families in the city (and the country). The dining room recalled the wonders of Magic Realism, with famous Latin American figures painted on the walls, a festival of piñatas, paper lamps and candles raised to the heavens. I still recall this trip to Ecuador as a luxury. A different kind of luxury. Enjoy this new issue of in magazine.

¿De qué clase de lujo me están hablando?, pensé cuando me ofrecieron vivir una experiencia de ese tipo en Ecuador. Y antes de responder, el personaje que me invitaba lanzó: “te prometo que no te arrepentirás”. Acepté medio titubeante, pero la curiosidad fue más fuerte. La posibilidad de recorrer Ecuador, por lo demás, no es algo que ocurra seguido. Al sureste de Quito me esperaban la selva, viajes en canoa, animales salvajes, comunidades nativas; el Parque Nacional Yasuní –reserva de la biósfera para la Unesco– en todo su esplendor. Llegué tarde, casi a oscuras, completamente empapada. Nunca antes se sintió tan bien una torrencial lluvia tropical. Me instalé en la hamaca afuera de mi cabaña junto a una orquesta sinfónica de pájaros, insectos y árboles, para ver el mundo desde otra perspectiva. Al amanecer tuve un recibimiento magistral: la comunidad Kichwa Añangu y su antigua ceremonia de preparación de té, con cánticos y meditación; tan simple, tan salvaje, también humana. El resto de la travesía continuó igual de sorprendente. Navegar junto a delfines rosados y lanzarme por un canopy selvático resultaron mis aventuras preferidas pero por lejos, y más allá de cualquier actividad, me marcó vivir esa exuberante Amazonía donde no cabe el reloj, la televisión ni el celular; donde importa la linterna, la brújula, el repelente, el sombrero, respirar profundo y levantarse antes de que el sol aparezca. A la vuelta de la selva, Cuenca me esperaba con una invitación de parte de una de las familias tradicionales de la ciudad –y del país– a una comida típica ecuatoriana cuyo comedor era de realismo mágico: seres latinoamericanos pintados en las paredes y un festival de “lámparas” de papel y velas se elevaron al cielo. Aún recuerdo ese viaje a Ecuador como un lujo. Otro tipo de lujo. Disfrute esta nueva edición de revista in.
