HCV Prevention and Outreach Program This is the 15th installment in South Boston Online’s series about substance abuse.

It focuses on a program called HPOP (HCV Prevention and Outreach Program).

“HCV” stands for the Hepatitis C Virus, which is found on needles used to inject drugs, and which causes Hepatitis C, a severe liver disease. In this article, we profile HPOP itself along with James “Jimmy” Evans, who works on the streets of South Boston to prevent HCV infections.

We’ll start this article with an alarming (but true) fact: 65% of users who inject drugs for a year will come down with Hepatitis C from dirty, HCV-fouled needles. Yes, two out of every three injection drug users (IDUs) will contract Hepatitis C from needles after just 12 months of using.

Is South Boston Online trying to frighten users? No, not at all!

Instead, we are issuing a solemn warning to every one of our readers about the dangers of shared needles.

By itself, the curse of drug addiction is bad enough. When drug usage becomes coupled with the risk of getting a serious disease like Hepatitis C, it’s bad news indeed. And

it isn’t just the users who could be afflicted. Discarded dirty needles can infect non-users; these needles are showing up everywhere, including in a local schoolyard recently.

But despite this bleak warning, South Boston Online wants to make it clear that help is available. One source of such help is Jimmy Evans.

He is called a Patient Navigator; he works out of Boston Medical Center (BMC). Jimmy has an office at 721 Mass Avenue, but he’s assigned to South Boston. You’ll see him mostly along Broadway, in Andrew Square, and on Old Colony. When you don’t see him on the streets, he can be found in a local office at South Boston’s Community Health Center, where he collaborates with people like Mike Conroy.

Jimmy’s job as a Project Navigator is, well, navigating his clients through the multiple levels of HVC prevention and care that are available here in Boston and South Boston. He makes sure they get help, in other words. He also asks high-risk drop-ins to put him in touch with other potential clients still out on the streets. He encourages HCV-positive clients to engage in proper care, and then to continue with it in the long term. All of this is part of HPOP’s efforts, which are funded by a contract with the Boston Public Health Commission.

Jimmy is from Springfield originally. He earned his Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor credentials at UMass Boston. His experience includes four years at McLean’s Hospital and serving as a Sponsor in 12-Step Programs. He’s married – he and his wife Ola, who teaches Nursing at Bunker Hill, have a son Jackson and a daughter Fiona. Jimmy’s enthusiasm for what he does in HPOP is evident – it’s hard, often tragic, professional work; it’s also highly gratifying to him.

He has a female colleague, Rachel Peichert, who works with female atrisk IDUs. The HPOP effort has a Lead Navigator, Samantha Johnson; the Program Director is Jonathan Hall. The Program focuses primarily on IDUs who are young – 15 to 25 – but will help other users

wherever it can. It can be defined as “an intervention team” that uses outreach on the streets of South Boston and around the BMC to assist IDUs. Extensive follow-up of these client IDUs then takes place.

HPOP is far more complex than we can explain here, but at its heart is the “navigating” done by people like Jimmy Evans.

We’ll close by repeating that HCV is dangerous; it’s an added danger over and above the hazards of addiction alone. But as always, help is available. You can e-mail Jimmy Evans at James.Evans@bmc.org.

You don’t need to suffer from addiction or the ills that go along with it.

Godspeed and Farewell, Wacko

This writer had a valued friendship with Wacko Hurley. We weren’t close friends, just friends. Closer, longerterm friends will write more fitting remembrances of Wacko, which is as it should be. This will be just a few memories of him that I treasure.

In my first interview with him, I was wondering what to expect.

Wacko’s reputation preceded him – the Supreme Court case, 50 years “on duty” with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a pillar of his Church, and so on. I don’t think Wacko ever fully realized how well-known he had become everywhere, even though he really never left home in South Boston (except for his service in the US Navy).

Rather than discuss the Parade at his desk, where all the paperwork was, he made me join him for tea in the kitchen of 774 East Fourth. I took my notes there. We brought the cups to the kitchen sink and rinsed them out afterwards. A very small

memory to be sure, but for certain, a highly valuable one.

We worked together on other functions occasionally. At one Evacuation Day presentation, I played the part of General George Washington, along with actors who played Henry Knox and a colonial soldier. When it was over, Wacko stepped to my side and growled, “I didn’t like it!”. After a brief pause, that famous Wacko smile spread over his face, and he stated, “No, I didn’t like it. I LOVED IT!” It’s a compliment that will always be prominent on the mantelpiece of my memory.

And speaking of his smile, when the St. Patrick’s Day Parade passed by his home on East Fourth, Wacko always stood on his front porch with the Captain of the US Navy ship visiting South Boston for the Parade.

He would beam that smile of his all the way across the intersection with Emerson Street.

So, Godspeed and farewell, Wacko.

You’ll be missed; you can never be replaced.

Volunteers at the 2015 Banquet

The tradition of South Boston’s Thanksgiving Banquet began 33 years ago. Msgr. Thomas J. McDonnell (then Pastor of St. Augustine Parish) thought the Gospels were “hospitality” Scriptures, especially Luke’s, so he conceived the idea of a Thanksgiving Banquet as fulfilling the Gospel message. He asked Frank Kelley, once a military Mess Sergeant, to carry out his idea.

Nowadays, the Banquet is hosted

by South Boston’s Catholic Parishes, along with our elected officials. And the rest is history; perhaps as many as 15,000 Thanksgiving dinners have been served since the Banquets began.

This brief write-up intentionally deals with the heartwarming volunteer efforts that went into the 2015 Thanksgiving

And the hardworking kitchen crew, after hours and hours of labor, provided up-front coffee and doughnuts, turkey, all the fixins’, drinks, and desserts.

Please let South Boston Online indulge in a few figures: Perhaps as many as 500 dinners were prepped and served this year.

Reservations had been made for 300 outside deliveries. Nearly 100 unprepared “Banquet kits” – a new service – were delivered also, for families who wanted their Thanksgiving dinner at another time. The kitchen crew cooked and carved 85 turkeys in all, which weighed upwards of half a ton. That’s a lot of bird.

We’ll close by mentioning the volunteer sprit that was so evident on Thanksgiving. There were as many volunteers as there were dining guests. Greetings, laughter, and high spirits resounded throughout St. Monica Parish Hall during the Banquet. It was a great way to begin the first weekend of America’s Holiday Season.

Ten Ten for Christmas

South Boston Online loves Christmas, just like everyone else in South Boston.

So, we were leafing through the December issue of Boston Magazine (subtitled “Holiday Gift Guide”) on Black Friday, and we noticed an odd phenomenon: All of the watches advertised in Boston Magazine, for both men and women, were set at approximately 10:10. More precisely, they seemed to be set at just about 10:08, give or take a little. The second hands were all pointed downward, between the 20-second and 40-second marks. Every one of the seven of the watches we looked at in Boston Magazine was that way. We are certain our perceptions were accurate, despite our being momentarily distracted by a Skechers

Furthermore, we have noticed many other watch ads since reading Boston Magazine. All of those watches were also set at or near 10:10.

The South Boston Letter Carries

of the photos we saw looked like daylight, but we couldn’t be sure of that. But that still leaves the question: What’s so important about 10:10 or 10:08, whether a.m. or p.m.?

There’s a 10:10 Society that devotes itself to prevent-

ing global warming, but their 10:10 has nothing to do with time. There are several verses in the Bible that are numbered “10:10”. Check out the Gospel of John in particular.

It’s also true that the World War I Armistice (now America’s Veterans Day) was purposely enacted at 11:11 a.m., but that’s really not even close.

The only “10-10” we know of at South Boston Online is located on lower Mass Ave. You wouldn’t want to go there, unless your appointment is at 10:10 a.m. perhaps Do you suppose that the film crews that shoot these watch ads all employ a third assistant director, whose only function is make sure that every watch is set at 10:10 or a bit less?

How’s that for a profession?

Anyhow, count your blessings at 10:10 on 2015’s Christmas Day.

Once upon a time, there was a flag – an American flag, which flew proudly and gloriously over the intersection of B Street and West Broadway. But time always takes its toll, along with ongoing construction, the summer sun, and winter weather, which is obviously at hand.

Given the patriotic spirit that exists in South Boston, as well as the occasional need to make at least a small statement, how about striking those colors and with proper flag courtesy, consigning that flag to purifying flames?

Something for Everyone The James M. Curley Community Center is indeed one of the city’s gems.

The Boston Center Youth and Families James M. Curley Community Center on Day Boulevard, aka the “L” Street Bathhouse, has provided quality services to city residents for decades. And, based on the current administration, it will continue to do so for many years to come.

Recently, hours of operation were changed during the week to accommodate those eager to work out before work. The new hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. and on the weekends from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

For general population usage, the center provides a weight room, a cardio room with state of the art equipment, aerobic exercise classes, Yoga, spin classes, boxing, ballet, dance, swimming, showers, a sauna and steam room, outdoor handball and racquetball courts for personal and tournament use. If you start at the center, and jog or walk along the scenic boulevard, you can then return to the center to take a dip in the ocean out back before taking a sauna or steam bath before showering.

The center offers teen programs and after school homework help for

elementary-age students, a summer youth activities program for children of our members at no cost. The center partners with groups such as the South Boston Leadership Initiative and host free strength, condition and nutrition classes free of charge to any youth in the City.

And, seniors can enjoy a daily coffee hour or lunch in our large Senior Cafeteria.

The center’s director, Freddy Ahern, considers the Curley Community Center one of the city’s gems, and is eager to get the message out that there’s a lot happening there.

“As one can see from the extensive list of services we offer at the BCYF Curley Community Center,” said Director Ahern. “That our mission is to enhance the quality of life of Boston’s residents. We try to accomplish this through offering many opportunities for the city’s residents to socialize, conduct local neighbor-

hood meetings, provide space for public group and club meetings, exercise, or just relax on the beach.

“This past summer Mayor Martin Walsh created a new Family Friendly Beach at the ‘M’ Street beach section,” Ahern added. “…thereby providing a comfortable and relaxing beach experience for children and families. It was a great success and the beach was crowded with families enjoying the outdoor weather.”

Local groups such as the L Street Running Club, The Castle Island Association and the South Boston Arts Association call the facility their home and provide a social, educational, and a health-conscious environment to those interested in joining their ranks. Red Cross blood drives, summer family nights, end of the summer beach parties, as well as homebuyer’s classes are held at the center. City election voting for Ward 7-1 and 7-2 is also held at the center.

Swimming events such as the New Year Day’s Swim, the Save the Harbor Save the Bay Cupid Splash, the Boston Light Swim, and the Jim Doty Memorial Swim are held annually on the beach behind the center. Rentals are provided for tumbling classes and dance classes such as Jacquelyn’s Dance Academy.

Movie-makers also take advantage of this locale by renting space for casting calls, and storage and staging areas, for movies being shot in Beantown. Puma and Reebok have shot commercials on location at the center.

“The Curley Center is one of many BCYF Centers in Boston,” Ahern further stated. “The largest human services agency in Boston which provides high-quality, outcome driven programs which are responsive to neighborhood needs and interests. BCYF designs programs within the ACES Framework (Arts, Community & Civic Engagement, Education and Sports, Recreation and Fitness) to ensure consistency and quality across the network.

Countless man and woman have spent memorable, youthful days at this site and throughout the years it has evolved. And now offers something for everyone.

Introducing Cailyn Noonan Youngster wants to be a gym teacher or a professional flag football player

She’s a shy, cute little girl who also seems to be old beyond her years because she’s apparently so smart.

Her name is Cailyn Noonan.

Cailyn, 8, is the daughter of Mike Noonan. She also has a brother named Mike. Young Mike was recently featured in SBOL. When she saw the article she wasn’t happy that I misspelled her name, so here we are with her being subsequently featured; and rightly so.

Cailyn is in the third grade at the Tynan Elementary School in Southie. Her favorite subject is math and she loves going to gym class. Someday, she’d like to be a professional flag football player if a

league is ever established, otherwise FOR love IMMEDIATE ELEASE she’d to be a Rgym teacher.

Her favorite color is blue. Her favor-

currently reading Iron Guard. Iron Guard, written by Mark Clapham, is a futuristic novel about demons terrifying the local populace on the mining world of Belmos VII. “I like how the action figures interact in the book,” she said. “It’s fun to read.” Interact-pretty big word for an eight year old, don’t you think.

In the world of sports, Cailyn loves going to the Tynan Community Center gym on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, and play either hoop, gym hockey or flag football.

“I like winning and playing with my friends,” she said. “In basketball I like passing the ball. In hockey I like to pass the puck and see my teammates score. In flag football I like getting touchdowns for my team so we don’t lose.”

Her dad is a happy man.

“She’s a very outgoing person,” he said. “Cailyn loves sports especially flag football and gym hockey. She’s a very good student and I’m proud of her.”

Trashion Fashion at the Tierney Center

The3PointFoundation’s 5th Food Giveaway

Boston, MA (November 24th, 2015) – On November 24th,The3PointFoundation held their 5th Food Giveaway with the guidance of co-­‐founders Andrew Mirken and Neil Jacobs. Over 100 volunteers from Up Academy Boston, Holland, and Dorchester decorated and assembled bagged meals to pass out to the local community. With the support and generosity of The Daily Table and J.W. Lopes, the foundation was able continue this event for another year. The donors provided the students with all the needed supplies; sandwich ingredients, fruits, and perishable items to fill over 700 bags. Meals were then distributed to the Boys and Girls Club in Holland and Boston as well as Geneva Elderly Housing in Dorchester. Students had the chance to converse directly with the residents in Dorchester, expressing what giving-­‐back to the community meant to them. Over the past four years, The3PointFoundation has donated over 2,700 meals throughout the City of Boston.

About The3PointFoundation: The3PointFoundation is a 501(c)(3) non-­‐profit organization whose mission is to teach, mentor and inspire under-­‐served boys to reach their full potential. We use the lessons learned in basketball to strongly encourage all of our student athletes to graduate from college and to develop the qualities of character that will lead to success in school and life. The foundation supports youth development and provides new opportunities for the student athletes involved. The3PointFoundation’s programs keep over 400 local student athletes involved throughout the year. On Wednesday, December 9, starting at 7 pm., young members at the Joseph Tierney Learning Center will be a hosting fashion show. Inspired by the Rubbish 2 Runway Refashion show hosted

by Long Way Home (http://www. lwhome.org/r2r-boston/) which they

attended in October, pre-teens from the Tierney Center’s after school program decided to host their recycled fashion show and named it “Trashion Fashion.”

This event will take place in the Tierney Center’s multipurpose room and will feature designs created out of 90% recycled materials.

“Some of the young people are designing looks and others are acting as producers,” said Claire Kaiser, the AmeriCorps volunteer who works with the pre-teens every day. “They’re making sure the show runs smoothly and that everyone has what they need.

“It’s been a really collaborative effort and I’m excited for next Wednesday!” she added. “Our program focuses on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) so this show has brought some of those elements together in an interesting way.

“There is a $1 suggested donation for admission and additional donations will be accepted at the door,” she concluded.

“All proceeds will benefit the pre-teens efforts to purchase chalkboard paint for their room which they’ve named Fraggy’s Lounge. We hope to see you there!”

South Boston Catholic Academy News Fall Highlights The children in K2 at South Boston Catholic Academy did an excellent job with the Thanksgiving Prayer Service. After saying a special Thanksgiving Prayer to God for all the wonderful things God has given us, they shared what they were most thankful for and some said their families, their teachers and their friends.

The children in Grade 1B have been learning about the Pilgrims and Native Americans and their lives. They used

a Venn Diagram to compare life long ago and today. They also realized what the children had to do for chores back in that time. We celebrated with our own Turkey Dinner. The children did everything from putting on tablecloths, setting the table, serving one another, eating, to cleaning up!!! A good time was had by all!!
