Hello 2021! The past year brought us many twists, turns and plenty of curve balls, but also taught us a lot. 2020 taught us how to slow down, to look for the silver linings in everything and of course the importance of our health, both physically and mentally. Taking care of ourselves and family has a lot to do with the food we consume. Each new year brings about new trends Here are a few healthy eating trends that have staying power and won’t fade away.

IMMUNE BOOSTING FOODS

Expect to find new and innovative products to help boost our immune system and mental health. Food can either be the best form of medicine or the quickest form of poison. Our physical and mental health are affected by what we eat, so it’s crucial to consume foods high in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that support our bodies. Choose colorful fruits and vegetables and check out a variety of new products on the market, that are filled with ingredients like vitamin C, mushrooms, and calming adaptogens to support our immune system and our mental health.

BREAKFAST IS SERVED looks different than it did just a year ago. Suppliers are reinventing the most important meal of the day, bringing us new ways to enjoy breakfast. Less rushed mornings and working from home, allow us extra time in the kitchen to make and enjoy breakfast. There are many healthy options available, from powered up protein pancakes, breakfast hash meals, and hearty smoothie bowls, there are so many delicious reasons to enjoy brunch on a Monday!

CHICKPEA FOR THE WIN

Each year there’s a rockstar food that stands out, like cauliflower in 2020, and this year it’s the mighty chickpea. Chickpeas can be found in everything! They’re not just found in hummus, pasta and falafel, but these protein and fiber packed legumes are about to show up everywhere (hello edible cookie dough!). Chickpeas are not only good for you, but extremely versatile, whether you use them from a can or purchase as a trendy new product, don’t knock it till you try it!

KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL

Dining in has become a regular event and our kitchens and appliances are getting a workout. It’s no secret the Instant Pot has had its time in the spotlight, as has the air fryer, which is a time saver and helps

us make healthy and easy meals at home. Last year’s hottest quarantine recipes were sourdough bread and banana bread. Now that we are making bread at home, there’s an easy button for that too! The bread machine is user friendly, like the Instant Pot and air fryer, and all three help us make meals at home that are easy to create and keep us all healthy and happy!

May 2021 be the year you try new things! From boosting your immune system with a variety of fruits, vegetables and adaptogens, to making brunch on a Monday as you Zoom with your colleagues. Perhaps you’ll embrace the mighty chickpea (as you’ll find these in everything), or you’ll become adventurous in the kitchen and call on your sous chef (ie. your easy to use kitchen appliances). Regardless of what you try, these trends are sure to stay, helping you eat healthy, one bite at a time! n
