For the first time in our history, we find ourselves fighting a people wholly different from ourselves. They are a different race, from a different part of the world. They look differently, dress differently, and think differently. Most important of all, they react differently than we would to a given situation.

It is important that we know everything possible about our greatest Naval enemy.

So, to this end, this issue of SHIPMATE is devoted almost entirely to Japan.

APAN is the greatest naval enemy that the United States has ever faced.

If her navy is to be annihilated, as it must be in the end, it is not enough to know the silhouettes of her ships, the range of her guns, and the speed of her planes. We must probe deeper, to the minds of the men who man the ships and

fly the planes. To what influences have they been subjected? How have they been trained? What motives govern their decisions and their actions, and how can they be expected to react to a given situation? Only by knowing the answer to these questions can American Naval officers be fully prepared to meet and defeat the enemy.

In general, the typical Japanese naval ofiicer is extremely well disciplined, expert in navigation, willing to accept great risks in hopes of success, and thoroughly trained to adjust his activities to any kind of adverse conditions. Important motives underlying all his actions are an intense patriotism and a deep loyalty to his Emperor.

the product of two equally important kinds of influences. As a Japanese, he has been subjected to the usual education influences of his nation; as an officer, he has had additional special training in a naval academy.

The educational influences commence at the very beginning of life. There is a touch of the military even in the terms applied to new-born infants. A new-born baby is referred to more- or less jokingly as taiho or cannon if a boy and gunkan or warship if a girl.

As children grow up at home they learn in story and in legend of the military heroes of the past. Even little girls' ball bouncing songs may contain verses celebrating Japan's victory over Russia,

They are healthy, well trained, and experienced, but are slower mentally and much less rapidly promoted than American sailors.

Children sit on the sidelines to watch and enjoy banquets in honor of relatives or neighbors who go off to be soldiers or sailors, and the local school participates in formal farewell parties to the conscripts. There are similar welcome parties for returned soldiers and sailors (in peacetime a returned conscript is similarly honored). Great stress is laid at this time on the honor of serving the Emperor as a soldier or a sailor.

At the annual boy day celebration on May 5, celebrated by families with sons born during the past year, gifts of warrior dolls are received by the family from friends and relatives, and at the banquet the older boys present will hear speeches about their duty to uphold the honor of their families, their village, indeed of their nation. The Japanese parable of the carp that swims upstream overcoming all obstacles is illustrated at this time both by pictures and by glowing words.

At school all references to soldiers and sailors are complimentary. Stories of national military heroes such as General Nogi and Admiral Togo are told and retold. For boys there is also a fair amount of military drill even in elementary school, inculcating through practice precepts of regimentation, self-discipline, and obedience. Thus in his six or eight years of public school a child acquires a good deal of propaganda in favor of the

military, and boys acquire a strong desire to become national heroes.

If a Japanese youth wishes to become a Naval officer, he attends a naval academy comparable in a sense with the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Today Japan has three naval academies to train midshipmen for their future duties as ensigns; the iirst located at Etajima near Kure in the Inland Sea, for those aspiring to the command or executive branch; the second at Maizuru for those preparing for engineering duties; the third at Tokio for those qualifying themselves for assistant paymasters. Naval constructors are educated at civil universities; after a professional examina-

tion they enter the navy with the rank of junior lieutenant. The Naval War College at Tokio is somewhat similar to the American but devotes more time to preparing its students, usually lieutenant commanders, for staff duties than foi' high command.

The enlisted personnel of the navy is about 60 per cent volunteers and 40 per cent conscripts. The proportion varies but service in the navy is popular and many volunteer although the term of enlistment is six years, while a naval conscript is required to serve only three.

Most of the petty officers are volunteers who have reenlisted and propose to make the navy a life career. Recruits receive

their elementary training ashore, by the same methods used in the United States.

They are taught to take care of their persons and their own belongings, and are given much infantry drill. Recruit training usually continues for six months before the men are ordered to a seagoing ship of the fleet.

The personnel of the navy includes at least four detachments of "Sea Infantry" similar in some respects to our Marine Corps. Units of the Sea Infantry are stationed ashore at each of the four naval districts; they are commanded by regular . naval officers who serve on this duty ashore four years and train their men as a "landing force" of infantry. When

necessary to effect a landing on a hostile shore, the Sea Infantry may be a covering force for a large landing party of which the army will provide the main body; or when small opposition is anticipated, the Sea Infantry will undertake a landing without reenforcement from the army.

It has long been the policy of Japan to educate more naval officers than she needs, placing the surplus in the Merchant Marine. Thus, she has a trained, active reserve on which to draw in wartime. This is in marked contrast to the American system of training only enough officers to fill the Navy's immediate needs during peacetime, necessitating a rush to train a body of reservists as soon

as war is declared. The Naval R. O. T. C. system instituted at many colleges in recent years may eventually serve to provide the U. S. Navy with a sufficient body of peacetime reserves.

The Japanese excel in the coordination of Army and Navy operations. This was brought out dramatically in the war between Russia and Japan in 1903- The Japanese navy was only about half as strong as that of the Russians; but almost half the Russian Fleet was in the Baltic.

As relations grew strained, the Russians tried to reinforce their naval strength in the Far East, to make it superior to the Japanese Fleet. The Japanese realized that the time was critical—that they must strike before the reinforcements could arrive, and that they must defeat Russia at sea and in Manchuria simultaneously.

Although it was an extremely inopportune time, climatically speaking, for the Army to attack. General Nogi recognized that the Navy could not wait.

Thus it was that Togo of the Navy boldly accepted the risk of covering the Army landing in Korea and Manchuria and covering its communications by blockading the undefeated Russian Fleet in Port Arthur, while General Nogi daringly attacked Port Arthur again and again to compel the Russian Fleet to leave the protection of the forts and give Togo an opportunity to destroy it at sea.

HE Japanese are no more a separate race than the English; they both live on the island beyond the continent, and the diflFerent waves of immigration can't get any further, so they all mix there. I think that is an important point, because the idea that the nations are fixed races does a lot of harm. A national tradition is a very real and slow thing, but if we say that the present opinions of the Germans and the Japanese are inherent racial differences we have no hope of any decent arrangement with them after their present rulers have been defeated. It took a great deal of political murder in Japan, as it did in Germany, to get the jingoes into power. And one of the chief things that made the Japanese feel isolated from the rest of the world, so that they became one of the gangster nations, was the American Isolation Act of 1924, and it reminded them of the refusal by President Wilson to state their racial equality at the Versailles Conference.

The Axis powers are always talking about races, for their own ends, and that is a good reason for supposing it is mostly nonsense.

Of course officially the Japanese say they are descended from gods, making a sharp contrast with the rest of us, who are descended from monkeys. But Japanese anthropologists cheerfully admit a Chinese and a Mongol and a South Sea island wave of immigration. Then there's the Hairy Ainu in the north, who certainly intermarried with the Japanese, and the Hairy Ainu is supposed to be Caucasian like ourselves. The beautiful girl of the Utamaro woodcut has a long narrow face with a curled nose, a fine Jewish type, and she only really occurs among the Japanese aristocracy; and that element might come from Arab traders in the South Seas. In fact it's a very complete mixture of race, though of course that does not prevent the Japanese from despising all the nations they are allied to.

They vary a good deal to look at, you know. Most of them really are short and a bit bandy-legged, but I think that comes from the way they sit down; if they are brought up on chairs and given food with

more fat in it than Japanese food has, their legs get quite normal. And the famous teeth of the cartoons really do occur, but that's a very curious business; you hardly find it at all except among town office workers. A Tokyo tram will be full of these teeth, and very ugly they are, but you never see a farmer in the country with teeth like that. The same thing happens in England, actually, but it seems to apply more to women. Now-

adays most English well-to-do young girls are made to wear elaborate plates to push their teeth back again. But in the poorer classes in England, where nobody bothers to make the little girls wear plates, it seems they don't need them. Very little is known about teeth anyway, but they are much more affected by your state of mind than you think, and my own guess is that the rat teeth of the cartoon Japanese are produced by the condition of their nerves.

Then, as to the Japanese customs, which seem now to put them so much apart from everybody else, the truth is that it's very difficult to name anything that was actually invented on the island.

The wooden houses on stilts, the fondness for water and so on, and especially the headhunting which the samurai were so fond of, come from the South Seas.

The kimono was a Chinese fashion of the Tang dynasty, that is from A.D. 600900, but if you take that off a Japanese man or woman what vou find underneath are Malayan clothes. When the Japanese borrow a fashion they stick to it. They were open to Chinese influence in middle T a n g and they still use the fashions of that period: the kimono; the litde separate tables for eating on; and the brand of rice wine. The habit of using chairs came into China in late T'ang so it was touch and go whether the Japanese got the chair or not. But they were no longer open to Chinese influence in late T'ang; they had had their period of borrowing and' now they were fixed again.

Then there's the question of Japanese reflexes: how they smile to show they are unhappy, and hiss to show they are polite and all the rest of it. I think this is much more a matter of training than heredity; there's nothing racial about it.

My own brother does the hissing, I notice: he's a retired colonel, and I daresay he has never met a Japanese. It is not the origin of it that is important; what matters is that a thing like that can come to symbolize a whole tradition and political set-up so that you cannot alter one without the other.

We have all heard a good deal, though it is old-fashioned talk now, about the high ideals of the Japane-se samurai and

how they would carry loyalty to their lord to any extreme whatever. The trouble about this is that in virtue of this one loyalty to his overlord the man was forced and expected to break every other conceivable loyalty.

No man or woman could ever trust him for a moment except this overlord; that was his duty. There is no secret about this; it is the famous samurai tradition which we have spent so much ink in praising. The Japanese who goes abroad no doubt does not fully accept that tradition, but it is his tradition, and it does not encourage friendship with outsiders. And then, secondly, he probably believes, and anyway he dare not publicly deny at home, that he is a member of a divinely superior race with a world mission which must not be insulted. Also even between two Japanese, personal relations tend to be a bit blank. I remember the great linguist Okakura saying an odd thing, apropos of nothing, as Japanese confidences do come; he said to me "It's one of our great difficulties that we have no colloquial Japanese; we can't talk to each other as equals, as the English do; there is always a formal relationship implied in the grammar." So again I don't think the curious stiffness which the world has noticed in the Japanese can be regarded as a racial or inherent character; it's a very direct result of their recent history and their political set-up.

We in England and America tend to think of the clever little Japs as wonderfully quick at their tricks. This is not an impression that anybody would get from living in Japan. It is truer to say that a single Japanese faced with a quick decision is quite helpless. He must have time; and it seems that, even if he cannot share the responsibility, he must have another Japanese to talk it over with.

The taxi-drivers in Tokyo used to take another man around with them in the front seat to make up their minds with; the other man didn't know the way any more than the actual driver did, but as long as there were two of them they could think about it. APAN developed her navy over the past seventy years with the aid of those nations she is now fighting, principally the Dutch, the British, and ourselves. It was with a navy built entirely in foreign shipyards that Japan fought the Russo-Japanese war and achieved a victory which classed her immediately as one of the outstanding naval Powers. For six hundred years, until Commodore Perry sailed into Yedo Bay, Japan was shut off from the world. Her feudal rules, believing in the safety of their insular position, prohibited the building of any seagoing vessels which might expose the nation to dangerous intercourse with the outside world. Ships of Western nations were forbidden from coming to Japan, and foreign sailors who were shipwrecked there were massacred. An exception was made in the early part of the EDITOR'S NOTE:

nineteenth century in so far as Dutch traders were concerned, and a limited number were allowed to come to Nagasaki under severe restrictions.

The Japanese obtained their first sight of a foreign warship when a British manof-war entered the port of Nagasaki in 1808. It is described as having been 186 feet long and is said to have stood 10 feet above the water. On both sides of the ship were twenty-three guns, in two

and keeled over. The Dutch were the closest at hand, since Dutch traders had been coming to Japan for some years, and it was to them that the Japanese turned and ordered two warships. In 1854 the Dutch government presented one of its own warships to Japan. The SOEMBLING, as it was named, was a paddlewheel steamer, mounted with five guns, and the Japanese renamed it the KANKO.

rows, besides two in the stern and bow of the vessel respectively, a total of fifty guns. It caused such a sensation that the local governor of Nagasaki committed Hara-kiri—suicide by disemboweling— out of disgrace.

But it was Commodore Perry's visit with his four warships in 1853, compelling Japan to open her doors to foreign intercourse, that led to the abolition of the centuries-old prohibition against the building of seagoing vessels and that gave to the Japanese the impetus to build a navy to defend themselves against the danger of foreign invasion, which was forcefully brought home to them.

The first attempt to build warships in Japan, along the lines of the foreign war vessels the Japanese had seen, failed.

There were no shipbuilders in Japan, and the first boats built were top-heavy

Several wooden warships were bought from Holland within the next few years, and just before the Restoration, in 1868, the Japanese Shogunate ordered an "armored man-of-war" from the United States. By the time the vessel was ready for delivery the Shogunate had been overthrown' and Emperor Meiji had come to the throne. The American government therefore delivered the vessel to the Japanese Imperial Government and it was used in a naval battle to subdue the remaining rebel fuedal clans.

The Navy Minister of the Shogunate had fled with the fleet to Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, refusing to yield to the Emperor's authority. Emperor Meiji recruited a naval force of wooden boats from among loyal clansmen, to which was added the "powerful" American man-of-war, which proved de-

THE JAPANESE BELL

BJECT of many a wry glance since last December 7 is the Japanese Bell, shown on the facing page, which has been for several generations one of the better known of the Naval Academy mementos. It was originally presented, on July 12, 1854, by the Regent of the Lew-Lew Islands, a dependency of the Empire of Japan, to Commodore Matthew C. Perry when he was Commander-in-Chief of the U. S. Squadron in the Asiatic Seas and Minister Plenipotentiary charged with opening intercourse between the United States and Japan. After the death of the Commodore, March 4, 1858, it was presented to the Naval Academy by his widow, in fulfilment of his wishes. Since the outbreak of the war with Japan, several parties have suggested removing the souvenir altogether; others, seizing on the fact that it was presented by a dependency of Japan rather than by the Japanese central government, have favored calling it "The Oriental Bell" from now on. But the majority feel it serves a useful purpose on the Academy grounds under its real name, as an ever-present reminder of the treachery of our enemies and of the job that lies before every Naval officer. Presented originally as a tribute to the man who opened the doors of western civilization to a backward, barbaric nation, the bell will remind Annapolis men that they must crush the nation that has misused that civilization. Apt indeed is that part of the bell's inscription which reads, in translation: "The barbarians will never come to invade."

IVIDE two thousand miles of ocean by thirty-one days, and what have you got?

Take two Navy officers and sixteen men and put them in a 36-foot motor launch, on one side of the two thousand miles of ocean, with the nearest safe port on the other side, and where will they get?

Add fifty-five Jap warcraft, one by one, between the launch and the port, and see if you get the same answer.

Multiply the difficulties by giving the men in the boat only the most elementary navigational equipment—a compass, a watch, an improvised sextant, and one "large-scale small area" map.

Subtract anything you please, and you've still got a story that any movie producer would turn down as "too farfetched."

But it's a true story; the story of how part of the crew of the minesweeper USS Q U A I L escaped from the Nips in the final hours before Corregidor fell, and made their way across that two thousand miles of ocean, and through and around those fifty-five Jap warcraft, to safe harbor in Australia and reunion with their country's armed forces.

It's a story of month-long flight beset with more perils than the script writers ever cooked up for Pearl White; from a desperate beginning in battle-swept Manila Bay, where the paramount problem was to get out alive, to triumphant arrival in Australia and matter-of-fact reporting to Naval superiors for new assignment.

Lieut. Comdr. John Henry Morrill, '24, commanding officer of the USS QUAIL, who organized and led the epic voyage, tells the story in simple words in his official report. Lieutenant Commander Morrill already was a hero—he won the.Navy Cross for heroic and distinguished service during the bombing of Cavite Navy Yard—but there aren't any heroics in his report; just facts. Only the facts are so amazing that not even a Navy officer writing a report could make the account anything but deeply thrilling.

The story starts on the night of May

SEPTEMBER,

1942

6, when two Naval officers and 16 men raced along the beach of Caballo Island in Manila Bay, piled into a 36-foot motor launch, and set out to seek, in a little cove five miles away, refuge from a storm of Japanese bombs and machine gun bullets.

It ends on the morning of June 6, exactly one month later when the same two officers and 16 men stood proudly erect in the same little launch and docked at Darwin, Australia; 2,000 miles of death, destruction, hazard and hardship behind them.

In between the start and the finish of the journey were innumerable details which in any ordinary adventure would be outstanding, but in this extraordinary one rate merely as daily incidentals. For instance: The entire company pooled its funds to form a $600 pot, from which supplies were purchased from natives enroute to augment eight boxes of emergency rations with which they started.

Eight 5-gallon water breakers were carried and replenished along the way, with Chief Pharmacist Mate George William Head purifying it so expertly there was no serious sickness on the entire trip. (In fact, on the diet of sardines, corned beef, sausages, rice, tinned tomatoes, cocoanuts, papayas, bananas, coffee, sugar and canned milk, all members of the party gained weight and strength!)

The launch was kept running despite lack of mechanical facilities, on one occasion a new propeller shaft being whittled out of driftwood.

And, on one nerve-straining occasion, a strong current kept the launch between two lines of Japanese patrol boats for three and one-half hours; then, on finally passing the line, the engine broke down and the launch drifted back through the gunboat gauntlet!

Lieutenant Commander Morrill's report begins with the tottering of Corregidor on last May 5 and describes incidents leading up to his band's escape just before the fall. By then eight of the nine Naval auxiliary vessels remaining in the area had been sunk by gunfire and bombs,

or had been scuttled. Only the QuAIL remained afloat and still on duty, despite damage sustained from three six-inch shell hits.

Two-thirds of the QUAIL'S crew had been ordered ashore to join beach defense forces, a skeletonized force remaining aboard to do what they could with one ship in the face of the closing-in Jap horde.

On the night of May 5-6 the encircling enemy opened up a full barrage.

"As seen from the QUAIL," Lieutenant Commander Morrill wrote, "this barrage completely covered Corregidor proper and the entire island appeared as one sheet of flame. Landslides were caused on the slopes of the hills. Dust clouds arose which reached the proportions of heavy fog. Island defense searchlights appeared only as yellow spots."

At 4:30 a. m. on May 6, a message from headquarters ordered personnel aboard the QUAIL to report ashore. Lieutenant Commander Morrill and his men accordingly proceeded to Fort Hughes on Caballo Island and manned the final defense line of that fort.

At 11 a. m. the order was given to scuttle the QUAIL, and Lieutenant Commander Morrill set out to execute the order, accompanied by five of his men— Gunner Donald C. Taylor, Chief Machinist's Mate James H. Steele, Chief Machinist's Mate Charles E. Weinmann, Chief Watertender Nicholas G. Cucinello, and Watertender First Class Jack F. Meeker, Jr. Their own ship's boat had been sunk in the meanwhile, and the party was forced to swim to another boat anchored 200 yards off shore. Proceeding to the QUAIL, they were strafed by dive bombers and machine-gunned from the shore, but succeeded in reaching and scuttling their ship. On their return, they discovered that Fort Hughes had surrendered, and so took refuge in a small deserted tug boat near the Caballo shore.

APANESE is one of the most complex and confusing languages in the world.

It cannot be learned from two pages—or two thousand pages. But the following brief guide will serve as an introduction and may prove useful in typical situations in which the American Naval officer might find himself.

Pronunciation: Speak all words with equal stress.

The vowels are pronounced approximately thus: a—as in "arm" e—as in "kept" i—as in "fit" o—as in "tone" u—as in "full" Memorize these words.

Since all syllables are pronounced with about the same emphasis, it is important to distinguish between short "o" and "u" from long "6" and "ii." Short vowels are pronounced in a light staccato fashion.

The horizontal mark over "6" and "ii" indicate that the sounds are prolonged: 6—as in poem u—as in food Example: "O tori nasai," means, "Please take this," while, "O tori nasai," means, "Please come in."

In the pronunciation of double vowels such as "ai," "au," "ei," each vowel keeps its original force.

Syllables usually begin with consonants. Bear this in mind when analyzing a word or a phrase. Examples: Kikaisuirai—Ki-kai-sui-rai (Submarine Mine).

Kokubokan — K6-ku-bo-kan (Aircraft Carrier).

Sojusha—S5-jii-sha (Pilot).

Zango—Zan-go or Za-ngo (Trench) The letter "g" is always hard as in "give."

"F" differs slightly from English in that the lower lip does not touch the upper teeth so that "fu" sounds like "who."

"C," "L," "Q," "V," "X," are not used.

Be sure to pronounce double consonants twice. "Kite," with one "t" means "coming" while "kitte" with two "t's" means "ticket."

The midshipmen are finding it hard to concentrate on Academics during these hot stmimer days, but naturally, they have no choice in the matter. With weekly "trees" staring them in the face if they don't study, the men find a way or make one.

In addition to European History and four professional subjects, the first class is studying foreign languages this summer. The course deals mainly with naval phraseology and accounts of naval battles of World War I. It is expected that by having the first classmen continue with the study of foreign languages, more men wiU qualify as interpretors and translators before they graduate.

Speaking of foreign languages, we might mention that some of the midshipmen in the new plebe class will be taking Japanese or Russian this Fall.

Vice Admiral Ghormley was overheard to say, "I intend to see that the Japanese language is spoken only in Hell." We think that some of the fourth classmen will hope that his intention comes true before they get through with the study of Japanese.

Aviation is being stressed more at the Academy this year than ever before. The Academic Departments are realizing that the modern naval officer must know something about aviation along with navigation, seamanship, ordnance, and engineering. The Executive Department has been presenting nightly lectures to the first classmen by naval officers and heroes who have just returned from the war zone. Because of their confidential nature, the first classmen have found them interesting as well as instructive.

The Department of Electrical Engineering has made the study of the theory of aviation a requirement in its engineering When academic routine is in full ef- proficient in each detail. Heavy Summer Schedule

AVAL Academy athletics are being kept busy this summer with a well balanced schedule that covers baseball, tennis, golf, track and lacrosse. The coaches have turned out varsity teams from the first and second classmen available, despite breaks in training caused by granting of summer leaves.

The baseball team is competing in the Maryland-District of Columbia Intercollegiate baseball league, created this summer. So far the team has dropped two games each to Georgetown and George Washington, and won two from Catholic University and one from Maryland.

The tennis, golf and track teams are undefeated but the lacrosse team—unusual for summer—ran into a tartar when it tangled with Maryland's veteran ten, losing 9 to 2. Navy's stick-coach Dinty Moore has only five veterans left from last season.

Comdr. L. S. Perry, Athletic Director of the Academy, recently announced the major sport schedules for the 1942-43 season.

The only changes in the previously announced football schedule were game sites. N o new opponents were added and none of the scheduled opponents were dropped.

At the request of Princeton and Notre Dame, the Navy agreed to switch game sites, moving their October 10 contest with the Tigers from Princeton, N . J. to the Yankee Stadium, N.Y. and the Notre

GEORGETOWN

Opening the Maryland and District of Columbia baseball league season, the Georgetown University team got to four Navy pitchers on July 22 to defeat the midshipmen by a 12 to 4 score.

BiU Leahy, Paul Burdette, Bob Philips and E. Metzger went on the mound for the midshipmen, giving up 13 hits to the Georgetown batters. The Hilltopper stickmen were led by Joe Guorgydeak who got three in four times at the bat, including a triple.

Georgetown scored in the second when John Kulikowski, singled and Art Hines got on through a pitcher's error.

They tallied on Sanie Zech's wild throw to home.

Navy got one across in the fourth and

Aaron Silverman, ace moundsman of the George Washington University baseball team, kept the Navy batsmen helpless on July 25 as his team won, 3 to 1, to hand the midshipmen their second straight loss in the Maryland-District of Columbia league.

All afternoon, the Tars who were limited to three singles, tapped the ball to the infield, and eight of these light raps went direct to Silverman. As a,result of the middies' failure to get the pellet out of the infield, first baseman Bud Keithley of the Colonials was credited with 17 putouts.

The game was a fine mound duel between Silverman and Leahy and Burdette. Leahy, Navy's starting pitcher, retired after the fifth when the Colonials had the game won because of their 2-1 lead.

George Washington scored a pair of tallies in the fourth as Elmer Lukehardt singled Jim Rausch across and Charley Heinbaugh stole home on a double-theft, which found Lukehardt taking second.

Rausch had reached second base as George Watson, middie third baseman, overthrew first after fielding his grounder. This was Navy's only error of the game.

The middies got their lone run in the same frame. Warren McNamara started the tally by taking two bases on Heinbaugh's error, continued on to third when Bill RcLertson, Colonial catcher, threw wild trying to pick him off second, and tallied on Silverman's wild pitch.

CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY

Navy mrned in its first win in the Intercollegiate league on July 29 when it turned back Catholic University, 7 to 0, in a seven inning game, ended by rain.

Burdette, who hurled five iimings for the middies, and his relief, Leahy, only allowed Catholic U. a single bingle. Nick Valanza got this in the third inning off Burdette. He singled to left with two out.

The midshipmen got away to a fast start, putting over four runs in the first frame. They added another in the second and rolled two more across in the sixth.

Bud Bowler singled to center and McNamara clouted a long single to left, scoring both runs. Del Cummings and Tommy Higgins reached base on fielders' choices. They came home on Watson's triple to left. McNamara had previously been trapped off third.

In the second, Herby Mills tallied after singling to left and being brought home on McNamara's hit to left field. Watson doubled in the sixth for Navy and Leahy followed with a double, leaving Watson on third. Bill Connelly bobbled Mills' grounder and both Watson and Leahy scored.

MARYLAND

Navy moved into third place in the Intercollegiate league play on August 1 when it defeated the University of Maryland ball team, 10 to 2 in a free hitting game.

The midshipmen put the game away in the first three innings. They drove over four runs in the second frame, added two more in the third, got another in the fifth and three in the sixth. They touched up three Maryland pitchers for 13 hits.

Maryland tallied in the eighth inning when Ed Rommel, Jr., singled to right and scored on Hart Crist's single into right field. The Old Liners tallied their second run in the ninth when Bob Keene walked, advanced to third on ground outs and tallied as Rommel got his second hit of the game.

Watson, Navy's third baseman, starred at the bat for the midshipmen, getting three hits in three times up, scoring twice and driving in three other runs. Leahy, middie pitcher, opened the seventh frame with a double to left field but got trapped at third later in the game.

A drizzling rain brought Navy's fifth summer baseball game to a close at the end of the second inning on August 5, with the midshipmen leading Johns Hopkins, 5 to 2.

The teams met in a non-league field and a slippery ball allowed two unearned runs on as many errors in the first itming. At the end of the second frame.

A ninth-inning gift enabled the George Washington baseball team to score the winning run and romp off with a 5 to 4 victory on August 12, although the middies slammed 11 hits off the Colonial's ace hurler, Silverman.

The Colonials were limited to four hits, all made off Leahy, starting middie hurler, but they got unearned markers off Lefty Rienstra and Dan Casey, third and fourth middie pitchers to take the mound.

The midshipmen had many scoring chances but could not come through with bingles in the pinches. Clutch doubles

by John Konieseweski and Buddy Keithley helped the Colonial's cause. Heinbaugh brought in the winning run in the ninth and his single scored another tally in the fourth frame.

Zech, Navy second baseman, twice threw the ball away, giving the George Washington nine, its run in the seventh as well as the winning counter in the ninth.

MARYLAND

The University of Maryland's great lacrosse team completed an imbeaten summer season on August 12 by plastering a fighting but outclassed Navy team by a score of 9 to 2.

Though beaten, the middies became the first team to score more than one goal on Maryland during the current campaign. Johns Hopkins scored just one goal against the Old Liners and Penn State was blanked.

The midshipmen gave the favored Old Liners a close fight during the first quarter, which ended 1 to 1. Bobby Booze, middie captain, put his club out in front after three minutes when he dashed down the field for an unassisted goal. The lead was short-lived, however, for 50 seconds later, Maryland's crack Ray Crelecki slipped in a corner shot to deadlock the contest.

SHIPMATE

In the second quarter the Maryland team pounded tnrough the Navy defenses for five goals and sewed up the viaory.

Navy braced in the final half, but even then was outscored three goals to one and the count would have been larger but for the exceptional goal tending of Midshipman Ray Strassle. He had a hard day in that the Maryland attackmen repeatedly broke through the Navy defense to get in close for open shots at the net.

The Navy golf team defeated Princeton 6V2 to 2V2 on the Academy course on August 1 with Navy's Homer Groskopf turning in the lowest score, 71, for the course.

PENNSYLVANLA

Although plagued by inclement weather, Navy's golfers on August 8 turned back Pennsylvania, 8Vi to V2.

Halving one of the six matches, the middies snared the other five for their second straight victory. W. L. Lewis of Navy shot a 74, low medal score.

Navy took five of the singles matches and two of the doubles. F. Roberts of the Baltimore team defeated W. C. Casey, Navy, 6-3, 8-6 in the singles and teamed with F. Bowen to defeat Navy's V. F. Williamson and D. Z. Zachary, 6-A, 6-3 in the doubles.

"H. W. (HUMP) TOOMEY, '22, told me several weeks ago that he's rarin' to get back in, but Pan Am has him stymied behind a desk in their English Department per agreement with the Navy Department.

"As for vital statistics, I regret to report that Bill Pennewill, '29, who was sort of a cousin of mine, and one swell fellow, was killed at Kodiak, Alaska about three weeks ago while taking off in a plane.

"C. D. (Don) Holzmueller, Jr., who bilged out at the end of his plebe year in June '41, enlisted about the time war was declared and' was a Sea. 1 cl., aboard the USS CYTHERA, which was declared lost since Communique No. 86, June 4, '42.

His uncle is J. G. (Jody) HolzmueUer, '29, and their two families live a couple of doors from mine in Milford, Delaware. In a recent letter from his father i e said that they woiJd not consider Don lost until after the first of August.

But I'll bet on his making a damned good gob, afraid of nothing that walks, sneaks, or crawls.

"I've sorta gone off the deep end again "in the ink,' so will belay it all lest the next issue of SHIPMATE fails to "hit the pouches on schedule.' But pardon me for asking one request. Being down here is.

George was retired several years ago, due to a physical disability, in the rank of Ensign, but was recalled to active duty immediately, as an instructor at the Naval Academy, where he has been since.

Promoted to (jg) some eight or so months ago — now a full Lieutenant, along with the rest of the class.

Marcoux, retired (physical) as a (jg) is teaching Diesel Engineering at Cornell University. (How did Charlie Frey behave as a smdent of yours?)

Both promotions have as date of rank June 14, 1942—just ahead of the mass promotions of June 15th. Nice going!

We visited NAS Miami during the last week in July. Although we saw only BiU Coleman, we learned that Stu Stephens, "Smoky" Packard, "Jimmy" Rector and Johnny Sapp are also there.

We asked Bill to send in a letter to SHIPMATE, giving all the "dope" on our classmates at the NAS Miami, similar to the letters George Clifford and "Ike" Hampton sent up from Pensacola.

Fred Hawes was serving in the LEX-

INGTON when she ""went down." He's looking and feeling fine. He arrived in Miami about July 15, and is now taking the training course at the subchaser training center. From him we learned that "Barney" Smith and ""Jimmy" Newell were also serving in the LEX. Lowe had left the LEX sometime previously.

We are happy to report that Smith and Newell got away safely from the LEX. ""Jimmy" was "exec" of one of the squadrons. ""Barney" was assistant aerologist — had reported for duty only a few weeks previous—rather a warm reception, eh? ""Joe" Stivers, Lt. (jg), USNR, came back to active duty in mid-July, and he too is taking the subchaser training course. ""Joe" had resigned, as a (jg), in 1939. ""Kirk" Kirkpatrick, after resigning several years ago, as a (jg), came back to active duty in March, 1941. Since then he has been connected with and has had subchaser duty only, commanding two of them, and was on his way to commission a third one, when he was ordered to his present duty. "Kirk" is now Lt., USNR. From him we learned that Leo Flynn and ""Jake" Davis now command PC boats.

We had a lengthy visit with ""Ed" Fagan, and enjoyed a luncheon with him. ""Ed" is supply officer of a light cruiser which was in port the last week in July.

He has promised to write a letter for SHIPMATE, giving the ""dope" on '34's Supply Corps Officers—W. J. Robbins, D. C. Ambrose, H. E. Cole, himself, and "Baron" Klunk. ""Sm" Stephens, (Lt., USN), is a flight instructor in the tactical unit, whereas Bill Coleman, (Lt., USN), is a flight instructor in the Gunnery Unit.

Daily workouts at Squash have kept Otto in the peak physical shape which he used to maintain at the Academy. ""Ken" Kerby, 35, (Major, USMC), flight instructor in the Scout Bombing unit, has been on the station nine months.

R. R. Hedrick, '39, (Lt., USN), Flight instructor in the Gunnery Unit, has been on the station 15 months.

In Miami Proper we've seen—"Fritz" Hawes, ""Joe" Stivers, ""Kirk" Kirkpatrick, ""Ed" Fagan, ""Irv" Bunevich, Mark Grant and '"Baron" Klunk. ""Irv" Bunevich, Lt. (jg) DE-V (S), USNR, is now on active duty in the 7th N. D. at Miami, as Assistant Personnel Ofiicer. ""Irv" is the only DE-V (S) in the district.

After graduation, "Irv" enrolled in the Naval Reserve. In June 1941, he was discharged from the Naval Reserve because of Physical disqualification—eyes.

When war "broke out" "Irv" volunteered for duty. Was called to active duty in February 1942, and given a commission as a (jg) without taking a physical exam. Now Irv is a (jg) whereas most of the outfit are lieutenants, he not having benefited by the mass promotion of June 15 th, inasmuch as his jg's commission is dated after November 1, 1941.

You figure it out!

Which brings to mind Bruce McNaughton's case. Bruce got to be a jg in Naval Reserve, was discharged because of physical disqualification (eyes), was called to active duty and commissioned an Ensign. Fast promotion, Bruce!

The ""Baron"? Until a few months ago, Klunk was at Coco Solo, C. Z.; now Dick is supply ofiicer for Aircraft at Key West. We ""bumped" into him merely by chance during a flying visit which he made to Miami.

Dick and family—wife and two sons —are now living in Key West.

As for Mark Grant? Here today —

gone tomorrow. After two years at NAS Jacksonville, Mark was ordered to duty with Commander Gulf Sea Frontier.

After a month in Miami he was on his way again—Trinidad bound.

We said "hello" to him on July 27th and ""goodbye" on the 28th. He would appreciate hearing from Gordon Griffin who is now at Newport News, Virginia.

We're extremely sorry to have missed G. C. Merrick who was kind enough to drop in and try to see us on August 5 th.

Gorman had just been detached from NAS Jacksonville and was on his way to take Command of a seaplane tender.

Friends of Fred Kinsley, '35, (Lt., USN), will be glad to hear about him.

Fred is now chief engineer of an 1850-ton destroyer, which visited recently in Miami. We enjoyed a delicious luncheon with him aboard ship. Fred is still a bachelor.

On our trip down from Norfolk, we stopped at NAS Banana River, Florida, there we found Jack Bain and family.

Jack is recovering from a recent appendectomy—a case which will probably be published in the Medical Journal. How '34 does hit the highlights!

Jack is now Exec of the Transitional Training Squadron, Atlantic Fleet, having served temporarily as C. O. Mona and three daughters are bearing up remarkably well under the average 95° temperamre.

A new hero has been entered on '34's rolls—Reginald "Reggie" Rutherford, Lt., USN. "Reggie" was awarded the newly created Air Medal for his activities in the Marshall Islands Raid. Quote, "For his part as Commanding Ofiicer of a division of a scouting squadron which inflicted heavy damage on the enemy, including direct hits on two large auxiliary vessels." Nice goin', ""Reggie."

As for "Dicky" Dickinson? '"Goin' Hog-wild"! Not content with having won the Navy Cross and Gold Star (equivalent of two Navy Crosses), Clarence has added the Air Medal to his collection for his efforts in the Marshall Islands raid. "For meritorious conduct as Flight Ofiicer of a scouting squadron which scored direct hits on enemy ground installations."

What next, "Dicky"? • We received a short note from R. J. "Bob" Oliver who is now a Flag Lieutenant to the Commander of a cruiser division, somewhere in the Pacific. The note was dated August 1st and reads:

"Dear Sam: ""I have just finished reading your latest contribution to SHIPMATE, This is to let you know that there are still a few of us left who like to play for keeps. Come on out and get your feet wet — the water's fine. ""Regards, "Bob Oliver." '"P. S. "Mickey' Reeves, "Red' Bruchez, and "Red' Price send their "love' also."

(O.K. Ollie, we're coming! Truthfully, we've been trying to get back to sea ever since December 7th, but no luck. However my sea duty commences September 1st. Hope to see you soon.

With the Good News Comes the Bad! We wonder about "Marty" Ray and hope for his safety. "Marty" was serving in the H A M M A N N when she was lost. '"Marty's" name was not listed among those of officer survivors. Missing!

We just finished reading the official report on the ""Battle at Midway"— "Missing in Action!" Major Floyd B. Parks, USMC—our own "Red" Parks.

"At 6:35 a. m. (Midway time, June 4, 1942) shortly after the Marine Corps planes had left Midway to carry out an attack mission, the island itself was attacked by a large group of carrier-born

€nemy planes. They were engaged by a badly out-numbered Marine Corps Fighter Force which met the enemy in the air as he arrived. These defending fighters, aided by anti-aircraft batteries, shot down at least 40 of the enemy. Several more were damaged. As the result of the fighter defense, the material damage to shore installations, though severe, was not disabling. N o plane was caught grounded at Midway.

The place is just getting organized and is still pretty much confused. None of us have been paid yet and we're all pretty broke.

"There are about 45 officer instructors on the Station. Of these about 22 are from the Academy. The Commanding officer is Captain H. M. Briggs and the exec is Lt. Comdr. D. Smbbs. The others are j . g.'s Harrison, E. D. Tate, and R. V. Tate was wounded on the LEX and retired and called back. Ensigns Bartlett of '41 and Battle, Butler, Clemens, Cooke, Copeland, Dankworth, Danner, Donaldson, Doyal, Edleson, Erkenbrack, Field, Calvani, Gano, Golly and myself of '43"In my class, it might interest you to know that several of the boys are married or soon to be. Battle, Dankworth, and Erkenbrack are married and Copeland will be on the 18th of this month. I'm not yet and won't be for quite a long while yet.

haven't worked very hard yet but we all will soon. The student officers have already begun to arrive. They are not due in until the fifteenth. There is no room at all for their families in town and they were told not to bring them and they've brought them anyway. The school will be like Fort Schuyler in New York only the second of its kind in the country.

The probationary officers range up to and including Lt. Comdr. in rank.

"I have a lecmre course where I will give a one hour lecture for two consecutive hours to two different groups of 500 men. This will probably be about every other week because the j. g. in charge of the course has nothing else to do but give the lectures. In fact he may take them all. I also have some history classes to teach. I won't have much time to take classes but I will be able to sit in on some until the end of this term late in August.

"The Exec just told me that they may make a V-7 school out of this school in September at the end of this course. So you see confusion is all over the place."

They Don't Talk When a sailor is home from the sea, he should have plenty to talk about.

But try and get him to talkâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;for publication.

Here's a sailor home on leave, after getting more sea battle experience in seven months than most sailors get in a lifetime. Midway, Marshall Islands, the Coral Sea fightâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;he was in them all, as a rating on a flat-top. And what does he have to say? Listen.

"Everybody thinks that they'd be scared. But you aren't. Just imagine the worst hell you can think of. That's sea battle. It's so noisy you can't hear any separate sound. Bombs crash alongside.

Torpedo planes come in so close you can see their grinning pilots. You see tin fish released and head for your ship. It's not a ship. It means more than that. It's your home and the mates on it are just like members of your family. I've seen fellows watch their ship go down with their cheeks wet with tears. After the battle starts you finally decide it's no use worrying. If your number is due to come up nothing can stop it.

"In one fight I got up off a hatch and walked across deck to the other side of the carrier. A few seconds later a bomb struck the hatch, killing several of my best friends. And I thought, boy, if I ever get through this war alive I'm going home, marry me a nice girl and raise a family so there'll at least be someone left to remember me by.

"I'd rather serve a carrier than any other ship on the sea. And I'd rather be in the navy, where it's always clean and generally cool, than to serve in any other branch of the service.

"And if I were a physically fit young man with no dependents still in civil life, I'd be so ashamed of myself I wouldn't get out where people could see me."

Captain Puleston has done it again.

His faculty for combining thorough research with lucid writing, which is responsible for the success of his 'Tife of Mahan" and his "Armed Forces of the Pacific," has resulted in a particularly complete and interesting story of the United States Naval Academy.

Shrewdly, Captain Puleston has succeeded in mrning out a work that should be of equal interest to graduates, to all Navy men including reservists, and to the general public as well. The graduates, both in the Service and in civilian life, will find a remarkably complete and wellrounded history of their alma mater, together with a picmre of the school today, written with an insight that could come only from a fellow graduate. Navy men, whether graduates of the Academy or not, will find a valuable source of information abbut the background and training of the regular officers of the Navy, written by an exoerienced seagoing officer. Throughout the book, strong emphasis is laid upon the practical application at sea of Academy training, and upon the close affinity of the school with its nautical tradition. Captain Puleston has gone to great pains to trace the birth of the school ashore from the earlv training of Midshiomen on the ships of the line, showing that the line of tradition is unbroken. Even in his detailed description of the Academy grounds, the author says, "When midshipmen drill or play on Farrasut Field, they are really romping on the former bottom of Chesaoeake Bay. and those old salts who feared the worst when the school was established ashore can be comforted. Present-day midshipmen still get barnacles in their shoes as they tramp across Farragut Field."

Finally, the public itself will find a

story of one of its most famous instimtions, written in layman language, with an attention to detail that makes the narration clear even to one who has never laid eyes on the grounds.

It is the completeness of the book that is its most impressive feamre. It begins actually before the establishment of the U. S. Navy, to describe midshipmen in the country's colonial days. Then follows several chapters tracing the history of the Navy from the standpoint of its training of the midshipmen. As Rear Admiral John R. Beardall says in his introduction, "Captain Puleston performs a distinct service to the Navy by correcting an impression which has long been prevalent and which has been fostered by responsible writers. That is the idea that ranking officers in our early Navy opposed the education of its junior officers. The leading officers of the old Navy, including such redoubtable characters as John Paul Jones, Thomas Truxton, and Edward Preble, vigorously urged the adoption of some re.eular system of education for its young officers."

The sixth chapter begins the account of the acmal founding of the U. S. Naval Academy, after which its history and development is traced to the present time.

Thereupon, one chapter is devoted to a discussion of the place of Annapolis in the Navy's training svstem as a whole, touching upon the relationship between regular and reserve officers.

The latter half of the book is devoted to the present-day Academy, beginning with a complete "guided tour" of the grounds including comments on the history of each of the buildings,_ and continuing with a description of the courses taught and of the extra-curricular activities that are so much a part of the school life. The book ends with succinct advice on "How to Enter and Graduate." Particularly amusing to the lavmnn is an appendix of Naval Academy slang.

As to style, Captain Puleston has succeeded in treating his subject with warmth and affection which adds indispensable charm to the book, without growing sentimental or biased.

The appearance of a page in the Alumni magazine, SHIPMATE, which will carry notes and articles for the wives will be a startling innovation, but we hope and believe that it will be of interest, with a little of this and a little of that, but no recipes for gelatine salads. Perhaps the men wiU find it worth reading too, if only to keep up with what the wives are doing and thinking, while they sit at home and wait.

Now to the wivesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;we expect to feamre on this page a variety of short notes, some personal, some social, some news which should be of particular interest to Navy wives who are away from the cities where Navy news is more current. Searchlight notes will include a list of names for which there have been inquiries, and for which friends are waiting. Items for the page, comments or suggestions will be welcomed. Club activities, special meetings, parties, mention of wives who have found jobs, and most anything the wives themselves would like to see in print.

The enthusiasm which has greeted the organization of the Navy wives' address file, The Searchlight, since its begitming on Jidy 1, 1942, has been most gratifying. Over 1100 addresses have been filed and the wives are using our facilities for the friends they wish to reach, and taking time to write a congramlatory word of appreciation. Loose Talk Most Navy wives are being the soul of discretion these days when it comes to discussing any information they may have heard, but still in recent weeks it was necessary for the Secretary of the Navy to put out an order cautioning wives and families about loose talk.

Signs are appearing in stores, posters are displayed, but at the hairdressers the other day, a charming elderly woman sat and told her operator the name of the ship her son was attached too, and the day it was to sail. When the operator said SH-h-h, the woman was so surprised and said, "Why I thought we were all Americans in here." So we were, but someday some listener won't be. Orders about loose talk don't mean the other Navy wife or mother, they mean you.

Lares and Penates Among those heading for work in Washington are plenty of Naval officers, and sometimes the furnimre lags very much behind, and when you arrive you find a house or apartment you could take immediately, IF you only knew when the furnimre would arrive. When the principal celebration was held in Dallas, with Governor Coke Stevenson as the speaker, telegrams praising Texas and lauding the service Texans are giving their country in the Navy, were received from Secretary Knox, CINCUS King, and Admiral Nimitz.

Governor Stevenson, mentioning several other Texans who have risen high in Navy ranks, paid high tribute to his onetime neighbor.

"Chester Nimitz fought for and earned his right to be commander of the Pacific Fleet," he said. "Every inch of him is a sailor. You and I can be thankful that the direction of the destiny of this nation in the Pacific is in the hands of this great, humble and human being."

The Legion announced it had embarked on a program of furnishing 35,000 volunteers a month. The Legion's Nimitz Day program did not end Texas' part in aiding the Navy. All legion forces were cooperating in a campaign to enlist 3,000 recruits each month in North Texas during, July and August.

With his veteran crews rested and his ships refitted, he had no difficulty in destroying the second Russian Fleet in the Sea of Japan, smashing the Russians' last hope of victory. Nogi's indomitable infantry and Togo's crews contributed equally to the triumph.

In the present war, the cooperation of the Japanese Army and Navy has been equally striking in the campaigns against the Philippines, Java, and Burma.

Similarly, the Japanese excel likewise in the coordination of air and sea operations. The Japanese air forces, like those of the United States, are integral parts of the Army and Navy. However, in acmal practice, the naval air arm has been built up at the expense of the army air arm. The reason for this policy is obvious. The Japanese leaders have long regarded the United States as their ultimate major opponent, and so have built up the air arm that would be most useful against us. In recompense, naval aviation aids the army in its operations. In the Chinese campaign, for example, all air operations have been in the hands of the Navy, even those over land. It is unnecessary, of course, to point out the superb coordination of air and sea operations in the attacks on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines.

An outstanding characteristic of the Japanese High Command is its willingness to accept great risks. Even under unfavorable circumstances, they strike first whenever possible. It was undoubtedly this philosophy that dictated the attack on Pearl Harbor at a time that was not particularly favorable. The Japanese had committed themselves so thoroughly to the Axis that they felt they had to strike before the United States and Great Britain together defeated Germany.

It has been frequently asserted that subordinates in the Japanese Navy lack initiative and are not permitted to make decisions as often as the younger officers in our own Navy. While this is true in general, it is also true that the senior officers of the Japanese navy are quite receptive to suggestions from their subordinates. The younger officers of the Japanese navy have an association of their own, ostensibly to promote their professional advancement. Acmally, however,

this organization has brought about the assassination of more than one government official, and is powerful enough to bring pressure on those in authority. It is said that the Pearl Harbor attack was the suggestion of this group.

In the ideological field, Japanese officers are taught that it is Japan's divine mission to bring peace and enlightenment not only to Asia but to the whole world. They look upon Americans as uncultured, lacking in history, and as being soft of body and of intellect. This supposed softness they attribute to our high standard of living. Such a point of view serves to make a virme of Japan's own low standard of living and consequent need to forego as luxuries many things Americans regard as necessities. In the long run this may prove a weakness of the Japanese navy since it means less food, more cramped living conditions for sailors, and ultimately a weaker fighting force.

In addition to the belief in a mission to rule the world, Japanese naval officers believe that, since the Japanese have a long history as an independent undefeated nation whose rulers trace descent from the gods, they are superior people to non-Japanese who lack benefits of Japanese race and culmre. A corollary of this belief is that while Japanese are brave, non-Japanese are timid, while Japanese are strong, non-Japanese are weak, while Japanese are virtuous, nonJapanese are "insincere" and lacking in virme.

It is considered a deep disgrace for a Japanese soldier or sailor to be capmred.

Related to this attitude is the common occurrence of suicide dives at ships by pilots who have been wounded and when

Japanese flag officers and naval captains are younger on the average than the American, and are correspondingly better able to withstand the physical strain of a campaign. The Japanese have a distinct advantage in their younger fleet commanders. In the intermediate grades the Japanese are also younger; and only the midshipmen and ensigns of the two navies are of about equal age.

American officers are required to perform both line and engineering duties, while the Japanese have a separate corps of engineer officers. The Americans have more sea experience and as they are promoted less rapidly should be more familiar with their duties. Japanese officers as a rule work harder and take less recreation; they are permitted less initiative and must wait longer for orders. The officers of both fleets are alert, well trained and accustomed to the sea; they are equally proficient and scrupulous in the execution of routine duties and would be well matched in courage. In professional attainments, American officers would probably average higher. An Imperial precept to the Japanese Army and Navy charges them to "bear in mind that duty is weightier than a mountain, while death is lighter than a feather." Togo before the battle of Tsushima, in order of the day, told his fleet, "a positive attack is the best form of defense"â&#x20AC;&#x201D;unconsciously paraphrasing Farragut and Mahan. The officers and men of the Japanese Army and Navy have shown on the battlefield that they are inspired by the precepts of their Emperor and Admiral Togo. The United States Navy created and is inspired by its own traditions; they are revealed in Paul Jones' "We have just commenced to fight"; Farragut's "Damn the torpedoes! Go ahead!" and Dewey's matter-of-fact "You may fire when ready, Gridley." But naval traditions are bequeathed by example rather than precept and in the annals of both services can be found warrant for the faith each country has in its navy.

The enlisted personnel of the Japanese navy are older and perhaps a little better schooled in their duties, for they remain longer on a particular position than American sailors, who are usually promoted more rapidly because of the turnover in personnel in the United

States Navy. The American enlisted personnel are quicker mentally and would probably react more promptly to an unexpected simation. The crews of both services are deep-sea sailors and could fight in any part of the world, although the Americans have usually cruised greater distances, for the Japanese Fleet rarely leaves its home waters. The Japanese are more accustomed to winter cruising in northern latitudes; the American sailors spend much time in the milder climates of southern California and the tropics. The physical condition of officers and men of both fleets is very good, their morale is high, they will cheerfully endure the burdens of a long campaign and, if it culminates in a decisive naval engagement, they will be equal to the ordeal of the battle.

All that takes further time. It is no use underrating the enemy, but this leads to a practical bit of advice. What the Japanese cannot stand is surprise, especially a surprise that forces a subordinate to make unexpected decisions. It would be a foolish thing to try to work up general hatred of the Japanese and all their works; they are not all going to kill themselves after this war, and what we have to aim at is a working relationship between the peoples of this planet.

The Japanese have many graces and virmes, especially when they're back at home. Unformnately they have taken it into their heads to be the rulers of a great Asiatic empire. Now that's the last thing they're any good at. They are extremely insularâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they find it very hard even to understand outsiders; their contempt for the peoples they want to mle is as harsh even as the racial hatreds of the Germans; their perpemal anxiety for their dignity makes them liable to be brutal rulers; they have no political plans to offer except the theory that the Japanese are descended from the gods; and their idea of colonisation in Korea, where they could work it out in peace, has been simply to try to "assimilate" the Koreans, that is, to prevent the teaching of Korean language and history, and to impose the very peculiar Japanese customs and written language. Now in any picmre of a better world the south of Asia is one of the great obstacles, from its present state of politics, economics, education and everything else. That is getting better, and one of the few hopeful things about the present set-up is that the mere necessary resistance to Japan is likely to give it a real serious push forward. But if the Japanese get hold of all this area they will reverse the whole development; they will hold down these peoples and make them a running sore in the planet, an obstacle to all fumre plans for general betterment. The final and definite defeat of the Japanese is an absolute prior necessity if the great hopes for a peaceful and progressing world, and a free and responsible Asia as an essential part of that world, are not to go down in misery and chaos.â&#x20AC;&#x201D;Overseas Service

It was during the Russo-Japanese war, when Japan found herself unable to purchase more warships from abroad because of the policy of neutrality of the foreign Powers, that she determined to try to build her own ships. The last warships purchased from abroad were two battleships ordered from England before the Russo-Japanese war but delivered afterwards. Since then, the Japanese navy has been built entirely in Japanese shipyards, which are now building some of the largest capital ships in the world.

When the Japanese started building their own boats for both war and commercial purposes, they encountered many diffiailties, and many of their ships, even of recent construction, have proved topheavy. A story widely told is that when Japan first began building passenger ships, she ordered two from England and, after receiving the blueprints, canceled the order and decided to build them herself from those plans. The British had anticipated this possibility and had purposely drawn the plans in such a way that if they were followed out the boats would be out of balance. They are said to have capsized when they were laimched. There is probably more fiction than truth to this story and I was never able to confirm it in Japan.

Several years ago a Japanese gunboat mrned over on maneuvers in a rough sea and the crew perished. Several other gunboats engaged in the same maneuvers had narrow escapes. This accident was due to the warships mounting too-heavy equipment.

Thirty years ago the SHINYO M A R U , a passenger liner of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, almost capsized in a storm on a trans-Pacific crossing. It was top-heavy, and the upper deck had to be removed.

In the aummn of 1940, passengers making the maiden voyage on the YWATA MARU, latest of the same line's passenger fleet, reported that the ship rolled unduly in smooth weather and that one evening, at dinner time, it almost keeled over suddenly, and all the chairs and dishes went rolling across the dining saloon for no apparent reason.

MARU—were all built so they could be converted into aircraft carriers and are now probably serving with the Japanese fleet. When we crossed on the TATUTA MARU in the autumn of 1939, Japanese officers of the ship showed our children how the funnels could be pushed to the side and other changes made to clear the sun deck to be used as an aircraft carrier.

W e never found any of the Japanese ships steady or easy-riding.

The Japanese have shown an extraordinary aptitude for adapting foreign inventions, choosing the best wherever they have found it. Their modern warships have combined feamres from all of the other navies, but they had not, until the present war, developed any innovation of their own. The "two-man" submarines, used in their attack on Hawaii on December 7, are the only invention in shipbuilding which the Japanese have developed on their own initiative.

How useful they may be in warfare remains a matter of speculation. One of two such vessels, known to have been used in the attack at Pearl Harbor, foundered on a reef. It is supposed these vessels are lowered from a "mother ship," possibly from a large submarine.

After World War I, a naval race developed which had its repercussions on both sides of the Pacific. Japan had an ambitious naval program—the so-called eight-eight plan—which provided for the building of eight battleships and eight battle cruisers. It was to allay the increasing tension between the United States and Japan that President Harding summoned the Washington Naval Conference in 1921, which established the famous 5-5-3 ratio for the United States, Great Britain, and Japan, respectively, in so far as the larger capital ships were concerned, a rating to which Japan has found increasing objection throagh the years and which has rankled as much as the tripartite intervention of Russia, Germany, and France at the close of the Sino-Japanese war of 1895. sion to an ultranationalist, militaristic policy.

Japanese opposition to the naval ratio did not crystallize immediately. The Japanese were well-enough content with their newly acquired prestige in the post-war world which their participation in the peace structure had bestowed on them. The showdown did not come until after the London Naval Conference of 1930, which extended the 5-5-3 ratio to cruisers, destroyers, and submarines.

Admiral Takarabe, Japan's Navy Minister, was a delegate to the London Conference, and it was due to the circumstances of his absence that the Hamaguchi government was able to override naval opposition at home. It was ViceAdmiral Yamanashi, as Vice-Minister of the Navy, who sat in the fateful cabinet council in Tokyo which decided on Japan's acceptance of the London formula.

Yamanashi, not being a cabinet member, had no voice, and it was Premier Hamaguchi who cast the navy's vote as Acting Minister of the Navy. Hamaguchi later paid for this act with his life when he was assassinated by a fanatical youth who said he opposed the London naval pact.

Admiral Kanji Kato, Chief of the Navy General Staff, then carried the navy's opposition directly to the Emperor, using his prerogative of direct access to the Throne in matters under his jurisdiction. He contended that the government had no authority to accept the treaty without consulting the Navy General Staff. His appeal to the Emperor was ignored and he was compelled to resign, but he became the champion of a cause which, though at first supported by only navy extremists, finally enlisted the whole of the Japanese navy.

At the time of the dispute over the London treaty I went one afternoon to interview Admiral Kato at his home in the outskirts of Tokyo. I drove for an hour along Japanese streets, one like another—the usual two-story buildings huddled close together mile after mile— until the car stopped before a Japanese house that looked like any other. I pushed the wooden sliding door and a bell tinkled. A smdent in uniform came running. I gave him my card, in English and Japanese.

He pushed open a door on the left and I could see Admiral Kato, in kimono, squatting on a cushion on the matted floor. He looked straight at me and said gmffly to the smdent, in Japanese: "Tell him I am out." Kato had no liking for foreigners, particularly Americans.

In recent years, advocates of the London treaty have been weeded out from the naval ranks one by one and placed on the retired list. By the end of 1934, when the second London Naval Conference took place, Japan was claiming naval parity, which would, in effect, have given her naval supremacy in the Pacific, where she has many bases close at hand. When this was refused her, she quit the conference and denounced the Washington treaty.

No sooner was the ink dry on the first London naval treaty than the Japanese navy began to devise ways to strengthen Japan's sea forces by all the available means left open. Before the end of 1930 Japan had drawn up the first of a series of four so-called "replenishment" programs. The first two three-year programs were published, but by the time Japan came to planning a third program in 1937, a policy of strict secrecy had been inaugurated and the other powers have been left to guess what Japan was building from the round-figure budgets presented to the Diet, which have given few clues.

Throughout that night, all of May 7 and most of May 8, they crouched in hiding and watched for a chance to slip through Japanese patrols. Destroyers and patrol boats had them blocked in ail

directions. They camouflaged their boat with tree branches—camouflaged it so well that when a seaplane flew directly over them at 500-foot altitude on the morning of May 7, they were not sighted.

Throughout that day Jap destroyers and a minesweeper worked back and forth, blocking all exit. On one trip, the minesweeper led a column of sixteen patrol boats of about 150 tons each. Heavily laden with passengers, Lieutenant Commander Morrill reported, these patrol craft apparently were transporting prisoners from Corregidor to Fortune Island.

At 7 o'clock the night of May 7, the party was preparing to venture forth when a Japanese destroyer slid into the very cove where they were concealed!

This destroyer dropped anchor only a few hundred yards from the camouflaged launch, and that night will remain forever in eighteen memories as the "living nightmare."

"We had ascertained for ourselves that the outline of our boat was clearly visible from similar short distances," Lieutenant Commander Morrill recorded. "Throughout the night we stood ready with rifles and automatic rifles, but the destroyer did not sight us. It left the cove shortly after dawn."

Another full day of tense watching saw many Jap warships pass close by. At 8 o'clock on the evening of May 8, Lieutenant Commander Morrill and his crew came to the decision, as resolute men will, that they had had enough. For whatever the rashness might cost them, they cast off the branches, mrned their boat's prow seaward, and headed straight toward open water. Creeping along with throttled motor, they first evaded three Jap destroyers abeam to the seaward of them. Then they slipped past a fourth destroyer. They picked their way around and between numerous patrol boats . . . "possibly nine in all." A cautious course was set toward Formne Island and Nasugbu. Reappearance of the three destroyers sent them swerving westward.

Then came three patrol boats, widely spaced, and once again the little launch performed a halfback's sidestep, this time to break into the clear. Slipping between Formne Island and the inner patrol boat just as it mrned away from the island, the launch for the first time had a clear course ahead and thrummed exultantly to its first wide-open throttle.

Without further interference, the party sped southeastward from Formne and arrived off the southwest coast of Luzon at daybreak.

The morning and afternoon of May 9

SEPTEMBER,

1 942

were spent off this coast, the launch being repainted black and its taffrail being removed. At dusk the party proceeded southward, then eastward, through the Verde Island passage. And then, while passing southward about midway between Malacaban and Mindoro, Lieutenant Commander Morrill and his men experienced another "nightmare" ordeal.

They discovered themselves between two lines of Jap patrol boats. The night was dark and they made progress for awhile, but then found themselves bucking a strong current which kept them almost stationary for three and one-half hours.

Literally edging forward, thev finally cleared the two lines, only to have the boat's engine break down and the current sweep them right back into the groove of enemy guns. As they worked under a canvas hood with a flashlight to repair the engine, an enemy tanker, one large auxiliary, two destroyers, and two large submarines were sighted. The engine finally repaired, they bucked the current again, got through, and passed between Verde Island and the Luzon mainland.

By daylight on Mav 10, they reached the small settlement of Digas.

From there on the voyage was made up of cautious days, free running at night, replenishing supplies with purchases from friendly natives, reassuring the frightened ones who ran up white flags at their approach in the belief the Japs were coming, anchoring in the lee of islands to avoid swamping by squalls, stopovers here and there, meeting every test —except one.

Ruefully, the doughty skipper who had conquered all other problems of those 2,000 miles recorded, in one of his final notes, failure in one particular: "No fishermen were present in the party. Many attempts were made, but no fish were caught."

From Digas, Lieutenant Commander Morrill and his crew proceeded on a gen-

eral southward course and logged the following stops: May 11-12-13, Bondoc; May 15, Tabongo; May 17, cove in the vicinity of Tandag; May 18, Port Lamon; May 22, Island of Morotai; May 23, Island of Sajafi; May 24, small island in Jeff Family Group; May 25, small island just north of Tioor; May 27, Tioor; May 28, island of Kur (Koer on some charts); May 29, island of Taam; May 31, island of Monlu, remaining there until the mofning of June 3; June 4, Melville Island, Australia; June 6, Darwin, Australia.
