Navy Launches Vast Training Program for 30,000 "New Type" Pilots Yearly Following are major points in the announcement by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox of the greatly enlarged new naval aviation training program: 1. Navy and Marine Corps to induct more than 2500 cadets monthly for annual total induction of 30,000 pilots.

2. Facilities at four large universities to be leased, each to be an "Annapolis of the Air." 3. Three-month preliminary "toughening" process for best physical specimens among nation's youth most strenuous in history of American military training.

4. Prominent sports figures, educators, psychologists, pilots with actual batde experience to ^e named for faculty and advisory boards.

5. Step-up in training to provide vast pilot reservoir for President's increased planâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;production program.

The most extensive aviation training program in all naval history was announced today by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox.

The new program is designed to train Navy and Marine Corps fighter and bomber pilots at a starting rate of 30,000 a year, with each candidate undergoing an extremely rigorous ""toughening" process deliberately aimed at making our seahawks the strongest, most daring and most determined type of airmen in the world.

Facilities in four universities, in the east, south, mid-west and western sections of the country will be rented by the Navy for the duration of the war, each to be an ""Annapolis of the Air." The vastly expanded new naval aviation training system will be in operation by May 1, or sooner, with applications for training already being accepted.

Navy officials attached particular importance to the physical training aspects of the curriculum, pointing out that the '"toughening" process will be the most strenuous ever attempted in this country on an organized scale. It is intended to condition pilots for any danger or hardship they may have to face in, or as a result of, actual air battle. Each of the four college or university plants to be used, as yet unnamed, will have complete athletic facilities. They will learn to march up to 40 miles from sunup to sun-

down, will be set at such heavy labor as ditch-digging, wood-chopping and landclearing, and will be extensively schooled in such realistic self-defense arts as boxing, advanced jujitsu, and rough-andtumble fighting.

With considerable understatement.

Navy officials connected with the new program declared that the training ""will not be easy." From this day on, the claws of our sea eagles will be tough and sharp.

In making the announcement. Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, himself a former Roughrider and veteran of the first World War, made the following statement: ""The Navy's new aviation training program is a distinct challenge to patriotic young American men who are proud of their ability to take it. This training will be hard, but the time for pulling punches in words or actions has passed.

The men who take this training will have to have guts. When they have won their Navy wings, they will have proved that they can both take it and hand it out.

That's the kind of fighting pilots the Navy wants and the country needs."

The Secretary also stated: "This training and the air training which follows it will make these men the best pilots in the world. They will benefit from it for the rest of their lives. They will be the leaders in post-war aviation development.

They will take the air in steadily increasing numbers, and do much to win this war for this country.

Even before the attack on Pearl Harbor, groundwork for the new plan had been worked out under the direction of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air Artemus L. Gates, a Navy pilot in the first World War; and Admiral John H. Towers, Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, a Navy pilot since 1911.

Navy officials admitted that the â&#x20AC;˘"toughening" process was too strenuous for adoption during peacetime on a voluntary basis.

Lieutenant Commander Tom Hamilton, USN, former head football coach at the Naval Academy and himself a top flight Naval flyer, will be director of aviation physical training. Lieutenant Commander James J. Tunney, USNR, is director of physical training for all naval personnel and is available for consultation and advice.

Leading college athletic coaches and sports figures will be inducted into the Naval Reserve to conduct the physical phases of this training. Other prominent experts have been invited to become members of a physical training advisory board. Acceptances are coming in by 'phone and telegraph, with the entire board to be announced in the near future.

Every cadet will be given expert, rigid, and constant medical supervision.

The four college or university plants to be used in the four quadrants of the country will be used solely as ground schools, each comparable in size to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Navy officials announced that arrangements with these institutions are progressing satisfactorily and will soon be completed.

Every effort is being made to select schools which will be least affected by this dislocation of their present aaivities and which have the necessary athletic facilities.

Each school will induct 625 flight"^ candidates per month for a total among ; the four of 2500 cadet pilots per month.

Each candidate will spend the first three I months of his training at one of these 1 schools, where the "toughening" process will begin. The course of training will be broken down into the following basic fundamentals to prepare the student for actual flight training: 1. Proper physical conditioning and strength.

2. Indoctrination in naval history and id a customs.

3. Military drill and seamanship.

4. Training in communications, on nance, and other specialties.

In addition to instructors in physical training, naval, and other subjects, each school will have on its staff one or more practical psychologists and special lecturers on the meaning of Americanism and the vicious, world-wide danger of the Axis ideologies. Navy pilots with actual experience in batde will be called in for special talks.

Before induaion, each pilot candidate will have to pass rigorous examinations proving that he is physically and mentally equipped to stand up to the hard work ahead. Once inducted the cadet's day will begin at 6 o'clock in the morning with 15 minutes of stiff ""tone up" exercise held outdoors, no matter what the

weather. During the next 15 hours the cadet will alternate between classrooms, drill, sports, and muscle-building manual labor. Except for time out for meals and study, the cadet will have exacdy 30 minutes during this l6-hour day for rest.

During the remainder of the time, he will be busy, right up to the time when bugles sound taps at 9 p. m.

During his three-month hardening period at one of the four new schools, the cadets will be given no leave. What time off he gets will be a reward for especial zeal in work, smdy or training.

That his days, while strenuous, will not be dull, is indicated by the major share that organized sports of all kinds will play in his life. Each school is to go in for varsity as well as intra-mural sports competitions, and the cadets will be taught to play as hard as they are taught to work and fight.

The extremely realistic attitude of Navy training officials can perhaps be best illustrated by the following subheads under the listing of "Rough-andtumble Drill:" a. Getting control of an opponent. b. Liquidating an opponent by physical means.

Perhaps another indication as to locations in which these selected young men will see action is the fact that they are to be taught to become expert swimmers and life savers, to take care of themselves in a jungle, in a blizzard, and in barren desert lands.

Lieutenant Commander Hamilton, U. S. Navy, Aviation Physical Director, in commenting on some of the more unusual aspects of the training, declared that "Soldiers and pilots of the Axis have been taught that there is no such word as 'foid.' Americans prefer to fight under the niles of sportsmanship, but we want our pilots, if they should be grounded, to be able to hand back any blow that comes their way, and with interest. Socalled dirty fighting is distasteful to Americans, but we would be less than realistic if we failed to admit that this is exacdy what our pilots will be up against. W e would fail in our duty if we did not prepare them to face it armed with all the knowledge and hardened by ail the training it is possible to give them."

Despite the Navy's realistic attitude, however, and despite the fact that naval seahawks are already known the world over as the original "HeUdivers," officials point out that regular chapel and devotional exercises will be held at each of the four primary training schools, just

as at training centers and in the Fleet throughout the entire Navy.

After students pass the preliminary three-month course at one of these four schools they will be sent to one of the 16 naval reserve aviation bases for actual primary flight training, where they will not be allowed to lose the physical hardness and additional strength gained in the primary course. Then they go to one of the Navy's advanced flying schools.

The entire flight training course will take a year, with less time being necessary in exceptional cases.

HEN Fort Severn was transferred to the Navy Department by the War Department in 1845, eight buildings stood upon the grounds: Fort Severn, the commandant's quarters, a block of officer's quarters, the quartermaster's office, hospital, quarters for enlisted men, quarters for married men, and a bakery.

An article in the Nautical Magazine for that year reads: "The houses formerly occupied by the commandant and subalterns of the post afford ample accommodations for the Superintendent and most of the other officers of the instimtion.

The midshipmen are made very comfortable in frame buildings, which were in use for various purposes of the post, and are put in good repair for the accommodation of the present occupants.

Each room contains from three to eight midshipmen, according to its size. Two large barrack-rooms serve excellendy well for recitation halls, and the two rooms of equal size below are used, one for a kitchen, the other for a mess-hall."

The Buildings at Old Fort Severn

The house which was occupied by the commandant of Fort Severn, and was the residence of the Superintendent of the Naval School, was built by Simon Duff, an architect who had settled in the colony some time before 1728. The date of its erection is unknown, although it was before 1751, when it was known to have been standing according to an advertisement published in the Maryland Gazette of May 29, 1751: "The subscriber, intending to break up housekeeping, will either rent or sell his dwelling-house in town, which is 65 feet in length and 21 feet in breadth, to which is a good cellar, garden, and all necessary out-houses; delightfully situated, near a good landing, so that no vessel can pass up or down the bay but may be fairly viewed from the lower story; and is well finished and in good repair, outside and inside, and would suit any gentleman either in a public or private way of business. Any person inclining to purchase or rent the said house may apply to . . . Simon Duff."

The house was on a half-acre lot.

Duff waited two years before he received a satisfactory answer to his advertisement, when it was sold on June 30, 1753, according to a deed in the landoffice, when he conveyed to Walter Dulany for the sum of 250 pounds, a lot of land lying in the new town of the city of Annapolis with a dwelling house "wherein the said Simon Duff now liveth."

acquisitions until, at the time the Govertunent bought it, the family owned nearly the whole of Windmill Point, so named because a stone windmill was built in September, 1760 on the point where Fort Severn was later construaed, and was short of nine acres.

a bake house which was also turned over to use of the midshipmen, who promptly christened it "Brandywine Cottage."

Against the boundary wall was still another strucmre, a small blacksmith's shopâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which too, was pressed into service as smdent's quarters.

The house was a large and substantial mansion of colonial style, with gardens stretching away in the rear nearly to the water.

Adjacent to the superintendent's house was a block of four dwellings a story and a half in height, which were fairly new, having been built in 1834.

At the opening of the school, one was assigned to an officer, the others to professors. In 1848 the roofs were raised to admit another story. The row was called Buchanan Rowâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and during the summer of 1898 it furnished quarters for Admiral Cervera and the senior officers of his squadron who were captured at Santiago.

Beyond these houses came the quartermaster's office, a small brick building up against the boundary wall, that was used

by Chaplain Jones as a residence.

It was later used for quarters and offices.

Between the superintendent's house and the river was a building originally devoted to the unmarried enlisted men, two stories high and divided into barracks. In the lower story were two rooms, separated by a hall through the middle of the structure; the lower floor of one barrack became the midshipmen's mess-room while the lower floor of the other was the kitchen. The upper floor apartments were recitation rooms, while a room some place was used as a chapel.

From a point between the superintendent's house and the barracks ran a row of Lombardy poplars, parallel to the old quarters, and ending at the fort which stood at the extreme end of the peninsula.

Facing the path which followed the trees was a one-story wooden building, about 60 feet in length, and divided into four sections, each having a door and a window opening upon the long veranda.

This was originally the quarters for married men, but now became those of the midshipmen who were packed into it four in a room.

The midshipmen named the house "Apollo Row," which was a ramshackle strucmre with doors and windows that allowed the rain and snow to come in.

Further along the walk in the direction of the fort was a larger two-story building, called the post hospital.

Here a large number of students were quartered who called it "Rowdy Row." Between it and the river were bowling alleys. Also

Rowdy Row was the scene of the most fun and general uproariousness.

The blacksmith's shop was dubbed the "Gas House," because the boys, led by Midshipman (later Brigadier-General) Nelson "gassed about everything and everybody."

On entering the enclosure there was a short path which ended in a circular road surrounded by a ring of poplar trees. Midway of the wall and against it was a little strucmre containing two rooms and entrance hall, where more midshipmen were quartered. This was "The Abbey," which had the reputation of being the quietest. So orderly was it, that the officer of the day often omitted it from his regular inspection. But when it became too good, a sudden raid by authorities brought to light a tunnel through the wall at the back of the structure, out of which the smdent regularly "Frenched."

In the summer of 1846, the first building erected after the Navy Department took over, was the Department of Seamanship, which was also for a "dining hall, athenaeum, kitchen, with the library on the second floor. The building was completed in about six months, and on January 21, 1847, a naval ball was held in the new mess hall. The Secretary of the Navy and the Naval Committees of both Houses paid a visit.

In 1853 the building was lengthened and an addition made in front. In 1869 the library was removed to the newly purchased Government house.

In 1846 the foundation of a hospital was laid on the Plain below the Superintendent's house, near the old mulberry tree, which was finished after considerable delay.

Several houses were standing upon the land purchased in 1847, including the Nicholson, O'Hara and Buchanan houses which were used as officers' quarters. The Nicholson house, the one nearest the Superintendent's, was assigned to the commandant; the O'Hara house, next to it, was occupied by Professor Hopkins while the third was occupied by another Professor.

When the large acquisitions of land were made by Commander Stribling in 1853 the simation of the houses, in the middle of the grounds, had great incon-

veniences; after some hesitation they were torn down with the materials used in building new quarters. The houses were called Blake row, numbered 11, while the last four were finished only three months before the removal of the Academy during the Civil War, and were handed over to troops to be used as a military hospital.

After the close of the war, many buildings were constructed under Admiral Porter's administration. The new fivestory brick quarters were finished in the summer of 1869. About 1868 the chapel and armory were built, with the site of the chapel a party of the Pinkney lot, purchased in the summer of 1853. The old Pinkney house was removed in I860, having been previously used as officers' quarters.

The Governor of Maryland's house and grounds were bought by the United States government in 1866. The wings and outbuildings of extensive size were removed in 1869, and the library was brought over from the seamanship hall and placed in the rooms of the lower floor. The second floor was used for offices of the Superintendent and secretary, which had been in a small building near the wall of the middle gate.

The governor's house was built sometime before the middle of the cenmry, by the Hon. Edmund Jennings of Lincoln's Inn, secretary of the province of Maryland and judge of the landoffice. By deed of Febmary 20, 1769 he conveyed it to Gov. Robert Eden for 1000 pounds as follows: "All that messuage or capital mansion-house, with the garden, yards, coach-houses, stables, and outhouses thereunto belonging," "as the same now is or was late in the tenure or occupation of his excellency Horatio Sharpe, as tennant to the said Edmund Jennings."

The house was not the official residence of the proprietary governors, as the present executive mansion is; there was no such official residence in the province. Governor Bladen tried to build one in 1744, but it was given up and after many years it became one of the halls of Saint John's College. Horatio Sharpe, the Governor following Bladen but one, rented the house owned by Jennings as a mansion worthy of his office, and lived in it from 1753 to 1769. Eden succeeded him as governor and bought the house from Jennings, and resided there seven years. At the outbreak of the Revolution, Governor Eden was on the Tory side and in 1776 sailed from Annapolis. His property was confiscated in (Continued

The door slammed open, and in walked the Midshipman-Officer-of-theWatch. "What are you doing?" he asked.

"We're writing an article for the SHIPMATE magazine. What do you want to know for?" we questioned, amazed by his sudden appearance.

"Well, I'm making a survey for the Officer-of-the-Watch.

He wants to know what the midshipmen are doing in the afternoons," the man with the sword responded.

This is an example of the constant check-up on the midshipmen these days to find out what they are doing during smdy hours and recreation periods. There is a plebe messenger posted at the main gate every day to count the number of first classmen going on liberty. Also, each man has an identification card with his picmre and fingerprints on it, and he has to carry it with him to get in and out of the reservation.

In order to conserve gold, the first classmen have their regimental insignia on one blue service uniform only; on two others, they have the one horizontal stripe. They now wear first class shoulder marks on their overcoats, a distinction which makes them look more like the officers that they are going to be on June 19th than first class midshipmen. By not having to sew regimental insignia on the overcoats, the tailor shop can make the supply of gold on hand last a long time.

Instead of giving the usual concert this spring, the Glee Club is going to produce the operetta, ""Pinafore," during June Week. They are now trying out men for the leading parts. Professor Crosley, the choir master, is helping with the production, and with his able assistance, it should be a good show.

Two weeks ago, the chapel choir went to Washington, where they sang at the National Cathedral. This is an annual trip, to which the choir members look forward with much enthusiasm. The midshipmen say that the great organ and the lofty ceiling of the cathedral make

the choir sound as if a thousand men were singing instead of a hundred. After the service, these men had five hours' liberty, and remrned to the Academy around midnight.

Now for some gossip from Bancroft Hall .

Bathrobes from West Point are begitming to arrive at the hall. The plebes are so proud of the Army bathrobes that they won from the cadets, that they are frequently getting frapped for sporting them in the corridors. (It's a plebe's rate to be in complete uniform when outside of his room, you know). Soon there will be so many men with Army bathrobes around here that it will be a novelty to see someone wearing a Navy bathrobe.

Some midshipmen really have some strange peculiarities. One man gets up at five-thirty every morning so that he can drink a cup of tea before reveille.

He brews it in his own room with hot water from the faucet. We wonder if the water shortage at the Academy these days will affect his little tea party or not.

A Second Battalion youngster, who likes to exercise his authority over the fourth classmen, makes the plebe windowclosers "sound off" v(hen they enter his room in the early morning hours to close the windows. He sits straight up in bed when he hears the door open. This surprises the plebes no end, but they "sound off" nevertheless.

Sabotage has broken out in the First Battalion. A pesky little cat has been meowing and keeping the First Batt ""aggies" awake for six nights now. So far, he has collected quite a number of coat hangers, light bulbs, victrola records, and anything else which was handy when the midshipmen began throwing. One man went down in the moat to get him, but the cat ran into a sewer pipe and waited until the disgusted midshipman had left before he came out; then he started meowing again. Another man even went so far as to beat on his locker door and scream in hopes that.the cat

would run away. We must admit that he gave the little fellow some strong competition, but just the same, the cat remained.

We always thought that midshipmen could get dates, even if they had to rely on the ""bricks," without having to write to a newspaper for them. Recendy, a poor little lonely plebe wrote to the Washington Post and asked them to get him a date with the most beautiful girl in Washington for the Masquerader's production, ""Mr. and Mrs. North," on March 7th, to which the plebes rate dragging. The newspaper published an article on the subject, and gave the names and addresses of girls who wanted to spend a week-end at Annapolis. This article started an avalanche of letters from other lonely fourth classmen. The editor became so enthused over these letters, that he started a lonely heart's column, which he entided the "Annapolis drag" column. This new article flourished for three days, and then met a sudden death when an indignant first classman wrote a letter to the editor, asking him to discontinue the column, and stating that he did not think that it was proper for midshipmen to write to a newspaper for dates.

However, we suppose that many a fourth classman who will be dragging on March 7th, will have gotten his date through the "Annapolis drag" column of the Washington Post.

After all these years, there will soon be a new movie house in Annapolis. It is being built on West Street between Murray and Monticello Avenues. This will probably give the people of Annapolis a chance to see a show on Saturday afternoons, because the "Circle" and "Republic" theaters are usually crowded with the "liberty hounds" from Bancroft.

The new superintendent has changed the time for Sunday morning chapel services from 0915 back to 1030. We all enjoyed going to chapel early, but going at 1030 does make the day seem more like Sunday. We have more time to read our newspapers, too.

By the way, we just received a cake from home. Need we say more? Do you mind if we knock off now and enjoy some of Mom's real home-baked cake?

Professor P. A. Lajoye Retires

In August, 1917, Paul A. Lajoye joined the faculty of the Naval Academy in the Department of Foreign Languages. In April, I9I8, less than one year later, he resigned to accept a lieutenant's commission in the corps of interpreters of the United States Army. In May of that year, he went to France with the Headquarters of the 30th Division, A.E.F. and among others, fought in the battles of Ypres, Lys, the Somme, and with the second American corps on the British front.

In May 1919, he remrned to America and re-joined the faculty at the Naval Academy in August. And here he remained vmtil July, 1941, when he retired after twenty-three years' serviceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Prof.

Paul A. Lajoye.

Professor Lajoye was born on February 12, 1876, at Le Vesinet, near Paris, France, the son of Charles and Elise Lajoye. He was educated at Lycee, St. Louis, Sobronne, receiving a B. L. degree.

After serving in the French Army and receiving an honorable discharge, he came to the United States in 1900. For several years he was a member of the staff of Courier Des Etats Unis, a French

newspaper located in New York. Following that, he was a member of the Foreign Department of Mumal Life Insurance Company, then was manager of the Berlitz School of Cincinnati, Ohio.

While in this city he married the present Mrs. Lajoye.

Professor Lajoye was a teacher of French in various college preparatory schools, the University of Cincinnati, and the Columbia University summer school From the latter he came to the Naval Academy.

Professor and Mrs. Lajoye are now spending the winter in St. Petersburg, Fla. While living in Annapolis, they made their home at 10 Thompson street.

There are four children, two of whom make their home in Annapolis: Marie Louise, and John Charles, who lives at Glen avenue. Madeline Lajoye is now Mrs. Don J. Bushnell of Oneida, N. Y. and Suzanne, is now Mrs. R. L. Woytych of Buffalo, N. Y. To all his former smdents, his shipmates of the summer practice cruises of 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1940, to all his friends and acquaintances in the service.

Professor Lajoye wishes the very best of luck and happy landings.

COMMUNIQUE No. 9

Two islands in the Hawaiian area have been shelled by Japanese war vessels within the last twenty-four hours. The Naval outpost of Johnston Island figured for the first time in Pacific action. It was bombarded by ships of the enemy at dusk. On the northeastern coast of the island of Maui, the shipping center of Kahului was shelled by an enemy submarine at about the same time. Damage in both instances is believed to be slight.

Naval operations are continuing against the enemy.

Wake Island has sustained two additional bombing attacks. The first occurred in the afternoon, the second occurred in the evening. The first attack was light, the second heavy.

Wake and Midway are countering the blows of the enemy.

Wake An increase of two Japanese warships—a destroyer and a gunboat— over the originally reported cruiser, submarine and 3 destroyers that the Japs lost in the attack on Wake Island, was indicated in two reports to Marine Corps Headquarters, received from the Pacific Area.

These reports were sent from Wake Island by a patrol plane. One, written on 20 December, is from Major Paul A. Putnam, commanding aviation on Wake. The other is a day by day accotmt of Marine Aviation's participation in the battle of Wake Island up to 20 December by Major W. Bayler.

The day by day record of the battle, though not an official report, is Major Bayler's account of what Marine Aviation and Major Devereaux's men did.

Major Bayler's report has but little reference to the Marines on the isle besides the aviation group, but one brief note—"Japs closed into 4700 yards before five- and three-inch guns opened up at point blank range" —indicates a cool courage on the part of Devereux's men that ranks with the classic "whites of their eyes" line of Bunker Hill, in the opinion of ranking officers at Marine Corps Headquarters.

Added to the two Japanese destroyers which were lost in the final phase of the battle of December 22, the new information received brings Japanese losses in taking the Island of Wake up to a total of seven warships—one cruiser, four destroyers, one submarine and one gunboat.

Major Bayler was on temporary duty in Wake in connection with the establishment of a base of operations for the Marine Corps Aviation unit.

Major Putnam's report of operations to his commanding officer in Pearl Harbor goes into more detail on the efforts of the tiny aviation complement to keep the planes that were left after the first attack in the air against each new attack.

Of the original aviation force of twelve officers and 49 enlisted men, 19 enlisted men and 8 officers were still on duty by December 20. Of these, four enlisted men and two officers were wounded but still on duty. One officer and six enlisted men were in the hospital and "doing nicely." The remain-

der, three officers and twenty-four men, were dead.

The letter relates that four planes were in the air against the Japs at the time of the first raid. The other eight were on the ground being serviced between flights, and of these sev en were destroyed and one was slightly damaged. One of the planes that was in the air later taxied into debris on the field—the wreckage of the first raid—and bent its propeller.

The Marine fighters, up to December 20, had made contact with the enemy seven times, had shot down five Japs in fiames, four more had "been claimed by pilots but not verified and several are known to have been damaged. Of the four claimed one was a four-engined seaplane."

Discussing the surface attack on December 11, Putnam reported "four airplanes (Marine planes) made a total of ten attacks, operating in a greatly overloaded condition and performing splendidly. . . . We claim the sinking of one ship and serious damage to another." The guns of Devereaux's force evidently accounted for the remainder of the ships reported destroyed in Major Bayler's synopsis.

In the attack on December 11, one plane was lost, " a washout on the rocky beach."

After the attack on December 14, which saw two Marine planes destroyed, "one plane on the ground by enemy action and one crashed on the takeoff" the Marines had "only two operating airplanes, one of which gives constant trouble so that two planes in the air at one time is the exception rather than the rule." At one time only one serviceable plane was left to Major Putnam's squadron, but the mechanics and ground crews evidently made an additional plane, or even planes out of the wreckage of the remainder.

Lauding the work of the ground crews at Wake, Major Putnam wrote "since that time (the first raid) parts and assemblies have been traded back and forth so that no airplane can be identified. Engines have been traded from plane to plane, have been junked, stripped, rebuilt, and all but created."

Continuing his praise for the men under him. Major Putnam wrote, "all hands have behaved splendidly and held up in a manner which the Marine Corps may well tell. I have no report to make regarding any officer or man being outstanding in bravery or fortitude; they have all acquitted themselves with equal distinction. On the other hand, I particularly wish to comment on the indefatigable labor, and ingenuity, skill and technical knowledge of Lieutenant Kinney and Technical Sergeant Hamilton. It is solely due to their efforts that the squadron is still operating."

Discussing the living conditions on the airdrome as they were on December 20, Major Putnam said "Personnel are living in dugouts made by the contractor's men and equipment. Not comfortable but adequate against all but direct bomb hits. Feeding is from the contractor's galley, a truck making the rounds with hot food twice daily.

Sanitation is only fair, but so far have had only a mild fiurry of diarrhea.

The tone of the entire report indicates no particular anxiety on the part of the air group at Wake. They were there under orders with a job to do.

They were doing the job and would continue to do it until circumstances beyond their control forced them to discontinue their efforts. They had kept those circiunstances under control for almost two weeks and they would continue to do so.

At no time during the siege were more than four Marine planes in operation, Putnam reported, but the verified total that these planes took of the Japanese was one ship, one submarine, and five Jap planes.

Far East The S. S. RUTH ALEXANDER, attacked

by an enemy plane in Netherlands East Indies waters has been abandoned and declared a total loss. One of the crew was killed and four were injured. The balance of the survivors are safe in a friendly port. The RUTH ALEXANDER of the American President Lines was a vessel of 8,000 gross tons.

Central Pacific Operations continue against enemy submarines. The Hawaiian area is quiet.

Eastern Pacific Coastal defense plans have resulted in a narrowing of enemy submarine operations off the West Coast.

Atlantic Area A report that an enemy submarine was operating in New England waters has been thoroughly investigated. The area has been searched without tangible results. Otherwise, Atlantic operations have been without incident.

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the Naval situation based on reports received up to noon (EST) today: Central Pacific A surprise attack has been made upon Japanese Naval and air bases in the Marshall .and Gilbert Islands. The attack was executed by surface and air units of the United States Pacific Fleet.

In the Marshalls, bases on the Islands of Jaluit, Wotje, Kwajalein, Roi (in the Kwajalein Atoll), and Taroa (in the Maloelap Atoll) were raided.

Makin Island, occupied by the Japanese since December 7,1941, also was attacked.

Admiral Nimitz reports that v/hile no large enemy combatant vessels were found, many enemy fieet auxiliaries were sunk, beached or otherwise damaged extensively.

Japanese military installations on shore were hit hard by Naval aviation units and shell fire. Many enemy airplanes were destroyed both on the ground and in the air.

Our Naval aircraft struck the enemy positions and ships with bombs, torpedoes and guns.

Our surface ships meanwhile heavily bombarded several of the enemy's key shore positions.

Two of our surface vessels received minor damage from near bomb misses.

Eleven American aircraft failed to return from the attack. Our total personnel losses are not yet known, but are believed to have been slight.

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the Naval situation based on reports received up to 5 P.M. (EST) today: 1. A motor torpedo boat of Admiral Hart's Far Eastern Command is believed to have torpedoed an enemy warship in night action inside Manila Bay. Although under heavy fire of the warship's guns and in the full glare of her searchlights, the motor torpedo boat managed to fire two torpedoes and to survive the action without being hit.

2. A naval battalion composed of bluejackets and marines has been organized and is fighting on Bataan

Atlantic Area Axis submarines continue to operate over a wide area in the Atlantic , Ocean, including the coastal waters of the United States. Their attacks on Allied merchant shipping are being combatted vigorously with increasing success by our forces.

COMMUNIQUE NO. 39

The NavT Department issued the following communique today: Central Pacific On February 1, 1942, the Navy Department announced that units of the United States Pacific Fleet had made surprise attacks on Japanese naval and air bases in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands. The results of these attacks are now available.

On January 31, 1942, Vice Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr., in command of a well-balanced force of aircraft carriers, cruisers and destroyers raided the Japanese strongholds on Roi, Kwajalein, Wotje, Taroa, and Jaluit Islands of the Marshall group and Makin Island in the Gilbert group.

Atoll a well equipped air base was located with 12 fighter planes and several bombers. 2 hangars, an ammunition dump, all fuel storage, all other storage and warehouses, a radio building, and 3 fighter planes and 6 scout bombers in the air, in addition to one bomber on the ground, were destroyed.

Kwajalein Island At this anchorage ten surface ships, five submarines and a seaplane base were located. Our attacking forces destroyed 1 converted 17,000 ton aircraft carrier of the "Yawata" class, 1 light cruiser, 1 destroyer, 3 large fieet tankers, 1 cargo vessel, 2 submarines and 2 large seaplanes. Other enemy vessels were badly damaged.

Our losses in the 2 above attacks were 4 scout bombers.

Wotje Atoll No planes were found on the Wotje Atoll. There were present, however, 9 vessels of various categories in the harbor. 4 cargo vessels of about 5,000 tons each were destroyed in addition to 3 smaller ships. The entire shore installation consisting of 2 hangars, oil and gasoline stowage, shops and storehouses, 2 anti-aircraft batteries and 5 coastal guns, was completely destroyed.

There was no damage or loss to our attacking forces.

Taroa Island On this island a new, well equipped airfield was attacked. 2 hangars, all fuel tanks and industrial buildings were destroyed. 7 fighter planes and 5 scout bombers in the air plus 5 fighters and 6 bombers on the ground were also destroyed.

Our only loss in this attack was 1 scout bomber. In addition, a U. S. cruiser sustained a hit from one small bomb.

Recapitulation Enemy losses from Admiral Halsey's combined attacks included 1 converted 17,000 ton aircraft carrier of the "Yawata" class, 1 light cruiser, 1 destroyer, 3 large fleet tankers, 2 submarines, 5 cargo vessels, and 3 smaller ships while several other ships were badly damaged. 2 large seaplanes, 15 fighter planes, 11 scout bombers and 10 additional bombers were also de stroyed.

In addition, destruction to enemy shore establishments was as follows: At Roi—2 hangars, ammunition dumps, fuel stowage, all store and warehouses, and the radio building.

At Wotje—Entire shore installation —2 hangars, oil and gas stowage, shops and storehouses, 2 anti-aircraft

The raid of our forces on the Island of Jaluit was conducted in a heavy rainstorm. Our aircraft attacked 2 enemy auxiliary vessels, badly damaging one of them.

At Makin Island, these forces destroyed 2 enemy patrol planes and badly damaged 1 auxiliary vessel. In addition, one enemy patrol plane was destroyed at sea.

COMMUNIQUE NO. 40

The Navy Department issued the following communique based on additional reports of the Marshall and Gilbert Islands' action of January 31, 1942.

Central Pacific Enemy losses in the naval raid of January 31, 1942 conducted by ships and planes of the U. S. Pacific Fleet against Japanese bases in the Marshall and Gilbert Islands totalled 16 ships and 41 planes.

Our losses totalled 11 scout bombers which failed to return, 4 from the Islands of Roi and Kwajalein, 1 from the Island of Taroa, and 6 from the Islands of Jaluit and Makin.

In carrying out the raids on the several islands Vice Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. divided his surface and air forces into self-sustaining units. Timing the arrival of each force at its destination perfectly, he was able to carry out simultaneously and highly destructive attacks on each island.

Rear Admiral Frank J. Fletcher, acting under orders of Admiral Halsey, led the forces which made the attacks against the Islands of Jaluit and Makin.

Vice Admiral Halsey has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for planning and conducting these brilliant and audacious attacks on Japanese strongholds and for driving them home with great skill and determination.

Commander Miles R. Browning, Chief of Staff to Admiral Halsey, has been recommended for promotion to Captain.

Appropriate rewards to other officers and men may be expected later when all recommendations have been received and acted upon.

One day he came when our worst Spanish scholar had the deck but he, too, could say "Si, Senor—Gracias, Senor."

In fact when the captain seemed reluctant to depart our deck officer added "muchas gracias" and then reported to our captain that the Spanish commander had made his usual call of courtesy.

Next morning at sunrise the Spanish gunboat dressed ship rainbow and fired a salute of twenty one guns; and soon a subaltern officer came from her and asked to speak to our captain. When he appeared at the gangway the young lieutenant said he brought a message from his captain to know why we had not dressed ship in honor of the birthday of the Queen Regent as requested by him the previous day.

With great presence of mind our captain said it was not our custom to dress ship until 8 a.m. and that we fired our national salutes at noon. He remrned to

the cabin muttering "never again trust an officer of the deck."

And our watch detail was reduced to four for the next ten days.

Our captain had great administrative ability but also had an explosive temper, and the incident seemed to excite his wrath against the whole watch detail.

Two mornings later the Spanish gunboat shifted berth shortly after daylight. I had the deck and as there was a notation in the morning orders not to call the captain until seven I did not report the incident to him until that time. For this I received the only private reprimand of my career—a very severe one. "You are not competent" he concluded, "to judge what to withhold from me. I should be called by you for everything."

W e left Ferrol Roads in a heavy storm next evening and our captain was up all night on the bridge, not retiring until 4 a. m., apparendy seasick. One of his standing orders was that he must be consulted as to the uniform of the day at seven o'clock. At that hour I called the orderly and told him to ask the captain for the uniform of the day. '"But the captain has given orders nor to be dismrbed, sir."

"Not to me," I said. "Do as I say."

I saw the orderly go into the cabin and then come out again and remain at the door. I pushed the button calling him to the bridge.

"What did the captain say?" I asked.

"Well, sir," replied the orderly, hesitating, "the captain said a very bad word."^ "What was it?" I demanded.

"He said, sir, that he didn't give a damn what the uniform of the day was."^ I felt that I had had my inning.

While awaiting the completion of the replicas of Columbus' caravels in Spain in order to tow them to America for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago the U.S.S. B E N N I N G T O N made visits of courtesy to various Spanish coastal cities.

In all the ports visited we received unbounded hospitality with one exception.

After a brief call at Melillia, Spanish Morocco, we attempted to visit Ferrol but were put in ten days rigid quarantine some miles from the city. There was a Spanish gunboat in port and her captain rowed out daily in his gig to hail us and ask if all was well and to express his regret and sympathy. Most of us were poor Spanish scholars but we only had to say "Si, Senor.—Gracias, Senor" until he remrned toward his ship.

By T. DUPP This memoir of ablution in Guam, written by the last to leave that island before the landing of the Japs, tells something of the life of the little band of officers who did their duty there, sans families, sans defense, working and waiting for what they knew was inevitable.

It wasn't Samrday night, only Monday, a Monday toward the end of October.

That meant, in Guam, that the day had been warm (all days in Guam are warm), with occasional showers (all summer and aummn days in Guam are apt to have a shower or so), and that the end of the day was welcome (all ends of days are welcome, in Guam, in Gotham, or in Galesburg).

Because the day had been particularly trying, the man decided he would have, when he returned home, a hot mb. In Gotham or in Galesburg that would have been no trick at all. In Guam, however, it entailed a telephone call to his housemaid to light the heater. This call was made at four o'clock, for, though he could not plan to leave the office before five, the man knew that an hour and a quarter was the absolute minimum for the ancient kerosene heater to heat the upper eighteen inches of water in the tank, and that eighteen inches was in mrn the minimum which, run into the scarred veteran of a bathmb, would provide a satisfactory dunking.

This time factor had a definite relation to the frequency of the man's hot mbs. Ninety per cent of the time he forgot to make the necessary telephone call, what with the comings and goings and problems of a busy office. When he forgot, it was, after all, a mere matter of doing what nearly everybody else in Guam did as a matter of course—take a cold shower. If he cut his office hours very short, and the day was sunny, and he was the first of his little bachelor coterie to reach home, there was even a chance that the shower might be tepid, for three hundred feet of the water service line to the house was above ground, and the mid-day sun mrned this section into a solar heater—unless the laundress was busy and used the warmish water as soon as manufacmred, or one of his housemates beat him to the shower. But mostly, because the man couldn't possibly get away from the office when the

sun was still high, this was a rare happening indeed, and he considered it fortunate that he was one of the sort who could manage with only cold showers, even though he could never believe them more than a utilitarian substimte for more civilized methods of bathing.

On this particular evening, when he arrived home at something after five, he saw that the heater on the west porch was flaring wildly, fanned by the strong southwest monsoon that had been blowing for two days. That meant the heating would be even more inefficient than usual. True enough; the hot area on the tank measured only nine or ten inches— perhaps another half-hour . . . .

The man went into his bedroom, more conscious than ever of the general sweatiness and smelliness of the khaki shirt he was wearing. His necktie was a damp knot that seemed, for a moment, as if it would successfully defy his efforts to untie it. His shoes were heavy with red mud, picked up while inspecting a construction job, along toward the middle of the afternoon, and being caught in a brief downpour. They seemed reluctant to leave his feet. Garment after garment, sodden and weary, clung to his damp body, only to be torn away with what patience he could muster. Once patience failed him, while persuading a sock to mrn itself inside out and peel over his heel, and he tore the thing practically in half. Never mind . . . 8c a pair at the quartermaster's.

At length, having reached a restful and satisfactory state of nudity, he flung himself down up6n the bed. He lay still for a minute, appreciating the breeze, which was cool by virme of the evaporation from his damp skin—in spite of the 84 degrees (five less than mid-day, five more than midnight) which a thermometer would have registered. He felt an itch on his right hip. Glancing down, he discovered a patch of prickly heat.

Not a very big patch, considering that his whole belly had been covered with it four days before. There was another patch on die left hip. Languidly he rose and sought out the "dope," a compound containing iodine, benzion and salicylic, prescribed originally for athlete's foot, and found effective as a general (though somewhat heroic) disinfectant. He painted the plague areas with this mix-

ture, and then regarded the effect in the glass. Sometimes he looked like a Pawnee in warpaint; this time the areas covered were not extensive, but they were indubitably artistic. Then he noticed that they lacked a certain symmetry, and corrected the inequality with another daubing with the cotton applicator.

The smff stained the sheets, the iodine reacting with the starch, so he had to stand up for a while. For something to do and quite by accident he did a rapid, repeated half-bend of the knees, and recognized it in his reflection as something he had seen a chorus in a 42nd Street burlesque do once, three years ago.

Rhythmically executed, it proved quite entertaining. He noticed that, to be effective, his gut had to be kept well sucked up. He bet the guy who trained the chorus had drilled the girls on that. He was glad that his gut still sucked up. Of course he wasn't a chorus girl—not with that stocky, furry torso and his strongly built legs—but he could still hold his own, perhaps more than his own. His second year in Guam was doing him no harm.

Then he happened to notice a book of short stories by Somerset Maugham, picked it up, and lay crosswise on the double bed—so the light of the waning day fell properly on the printed page— and read one of them, one concerning a prisoner in a French penal colony who had "an official position," that of official executioner. A well-mrned story, but nothing to keep him from his main enjoyment, which was scratching. It was surprising, tmly it was, all of the varied places which itched vaguely or decisively, requiring either deft or determined digging with his fingernails. Sometimes they fooled him, and the most innocent, furtive sort of an itch went berserk under the gentlest of rubbings, and thus came in the end to require the most radical treatment he could administer. He wondered if there weren't a lot of things like that; which didn't amount to much if one let them alone. He wondered if, just for fun, he shouldn't procure somewhere one of those Chinese claws of wood or of ivory, made especially for this business of scratching the absurd but appreciative portions of the human anatomy. Just at that moment, of course, a place between his shoulder blades took to itching with fervor, and he practically

unjointed himself in assuaging the tickling. He scratched his arms, his shoidders, his thighs, his belly, the small of his back â&#x20AC;&#x201D;every place, in fact, except his head, which apparently requires treatment only in perplexity, or when the remainder of the body is covered and inaccessible, when it realizes its responsibility and makes up for former unproductive hours.

Before the story was finished, failing light forced him to change sides on the bed and light a lamp. During the interval of shifting about he took inventory of sundry injuries provided by his various recent activities, noting that the place where he had barked his shin on an automobile bumper the previous week was getting along nicely, although a little purplish about the scab, and that the cuts on his ankles, incurred ten days ago on a hike in jagged limestone mountains, were practically invisible. He settled back to his story with considerable satisfaction at his ability to withstand these minor damages.

The story finished, he wound a towel about himself and proceeded to the back porch, where, there being no room in the bathroom, the mb was installed. The other occupants of the house were men, and the servants could be depended upon

to know when he was in the tub and to act accordingly. He thus had as much privacy as necessary or desirable. The heater had been blown out, and there would be none too much hot water. He inserted the corncob with a wrapping of cloth around it which did duty as stopper.

He turned on the faucet. The pressure failed momentarily when the cook mrned on the kitchen spigot, but in a few seconds it came on again with a rush, and he perched on the edge of the mb, carefully regarding the level of the water.

He wanted the mb as full as possibleâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; but he also wanted it as hot as he could well stand. There was a nice adjustment necessary to achieve this, a certain accurate gauging of the amount of cold water which might safely be used for dilution after the hot water became exhausted. At last a moment arrived when he dared not let the water run another second, even though there was not in the mb the quanity he had hoped to have. Testing with his toes, he found the water satisfactorily uncomfortable, and gradually he lowered himself into the velvety, burning fluid. One shoulder stuck out, but that couldn t be helped.

The rest of him felt good, and when he splashed the water about in the mb the

waves came up over the exposed shoulder and allowed it to share in the sensatioiis.

He splashed the water over his face.

After a while he changed sides, exposing the other shoulder. Lolling there, he took to remembering tubs, mbs in Brooklyn and Boston and Seattle and St. Louis, in which he had enjoyed similarly delectable ablutions. He went on a regular tour of that wonderful land of the bathmb, the U. S. A., and was surprised, somewhere between Troy, New York and Keokuk, to note that the water around him was no longer hot.

Rousing himself from his reverie, he lathered his neck, his arms, his torso, and amid some tremendous splashings pushed the corncob plug from its socket with his toes, finishing his rinsing to the pleasant gurgle of water ebbing down the drain.

Sighing, he picked up the towel and began a languid rubdown. On the way back to his room he noted the white lines of the heavy surf breaking out over the edge of the reef. The breeze was still fresh and free. He stood still and let it blow upon him. He felt fine. Everything considered, there were probably much worse places than Guam for taking a hot bath.

Navy Teams Hold Edge The Naval Academy indoor varsity teams, weakened by early graduation, held a two to one lead over opponents in seven sports with the winter season reaching its peak.

The fencing team has mrned in four wins including a victory over New York University, winners of the national fencing tide last season.

The newly formed pistol team has a clear record of two wins, mrning back M. I. T. and Yale. After dropping the opening match to V. M. I., the Navy riflemen have won the four succeeding matches.

The varsity basketball team has won five and lost four. Columbia, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland and the Reserve Midshipmen have lowered their colors to the middle quint. But Duke, Pennsylvania, Penn State and William and Mary won victories.

The gym team defeated Princeton but lost to Illinois, holders of the Big Ten and national tides.

Again the Midwestern team the middies were leading until the last event, dropping the meet by five points.

Navy's wrestlers are mrning in a good record, with victories over North Carolina, Temple and Northwestern and a loss to Penn State.

The swimming team has lost to North 'Carolina, Yale, Princeton and Harvard and has won from Lafayette, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The junior varsity basketball team has "won three matches, while the Plebe team have mrned in seven wins and five losses in basketball, swimming, wrestling, gymnasium and fencing.

The varsity indoor track squad will participate on Feb. 28 in the Southern Conference games at Chapel Hill, N. C. and on Mar. 9 in the Catholic University meet in Washington.

Led by Captain Glen Knox the William and Mary basketball team defeated the Na'vy quint, 42 to 40 on Feb. 14 to give the Indians their eleventh win in fifteen starts. The visitor's margin was a pair of foul throws. Knox added 18 points to his team's score.

Both teams made 17 field goals but the midshipmen after a brief 3 to 0 lead at the start, spent most of the afternoon trying to catch up with the Southerners. The Navy marksmanship was poor in the early stages and it was mainly because of this fact that William and Mary led 24 to 19 at the half.

The first half was a see-saw affair imtil Knox went on a scoring spree. Navy tied it up 30 all as John McTighe scored but the Indians again went out in front.

William and Mary had two more foul throws, being awarded 13 to Na'vy's 11, and their successful netting won the game for them.

LAFAYETTE

A new Naval Academy pool record was established Jan. 17 as Navy's swimming team sank Lafayette College's tankmen,, 53 to 22.

Bob Selmer, Navy's backstroke ace,, swam the 150 yard backstroke in 1:45.5,. lowering the previous pool record by 3/10 of a second. Bob Bailey, a teammate, trailed him to the finish line.

The Middies took seven of the nine events in winning their first meet of the season. The visitors won the 200-yard breaststroke and the 440-yard free style races.

Lafayette's Captain, George Ryder,, swam a nip and tuck race with John Sincavich of Na'vy in the breast stroke event, nosing the Middle out to win by one foot. Earl Kanter took the 440-yard free style for the Pennsylvanian.

VIRGINIA

The Na'vy swimming team took both relays and placed first in five of the seven individual events Jan. 24 to defeat the University of Virginia tankmen by a 60 to 15 score.

Selmer in winning the 150-yard back stroke for Na'vy set a new Naval Academy record of 1:44.3, breaking his own mark of 1:45.5 set last week.

Dick Ogden and John Richards were the first place winners for Virginia.

Ogden won the 220-yard free style and placed third in the 440-yard free style.

Richards took the 50-yard free style event, placed third in the 100-yard free style and was a member of the losing Virginia 400-yard relay team.

Krotkiewitz won the fancy diving for Navy with Virginia placing third in the event. Roby Robinson took the 100yard free style for Navy, Sincavich won the 200-yard breast stroke for the midshipmen and Al Gross gave Navy a win in the 440-yard free style.

YALE

The Yale swimmers, leaders of the Eastern Intercollegiate League, swept every event Jan. 31 to defeat the Na'vy tankmen by a 59 to 16 score. It was Yale's fourth straight win of the season.

Gross mrned in the best performance for the midshipmen placing second in the 440-yard free style and third in the 220yard free style.

Lou Dannebaum, Yale holder of the Na'vy pool record for the backstroke, won the 150-yard backstroke event with Selmer of Na'vy in second place.

Thurston Twigg-Smith took the 200yard breast stroke with Sincavich of Na'vy in second place.

Bob Arras was a handy winner in the 440-yard free style for Yale but Dick Mann his teammate trailed into third place after a hard duel with Gross. Yale also had a hard battle to take the 400yard relay.

Henry Cooke, Yale's intercollegiate tide holder, easily won the low board fancy diving rolling up a total of 130.77 points to shade his teammate Sandy Thompson who mrned in 107.37. Wilson of Navy was third.

Yale opened the meet with an easy victory in the 300-yard medley relay.

Then Dick Kelly, Yale, pulled out ahead to take the 220-yard free style with Bob Peters also of Yale about five feet behind him.

Howard Johnson, Yale captain, took the 100-yard free style. He holds the record for NCAA for the distance.

Feb. 7 gave Na'vy's fencers a 15V^ to IIV^ triumph over Penn State.

The invaders tiurned in their best performance in the sabre bouts, winning 6 to 3. Robert Hankin, of Penn State, won all three of his bouts, defeating Dick Faubain, 5 to 2; Dewey Walker, 5 to 1, and Gail Ellerbee, 5 to 4.

Dick Walker of Navy won all his bouts with the epee defeating Charles Harris, 3-2; Bob Casson, 3-1 and Allen Nichol, 3-1.

RUTGERS

The Navy fencing team won with all three weapons Jan. 24 to defeat the Rutgers University swordsmen by a 17 to 10 score.

The midshipmen made their best showing with the foils winning the bouts 7 to 2. They took the epee bouts, 5 to 4 and won the sabre contests by the same score.

Victories in the foil and epee contests

ILLINOIS

The Na'vy gymnasium team sprang a real surprise on the Illinois gymnasts. Big Ten champions, Feb. 7 by leading to the last event and only to be nosed out by a 25 to 20 score.

The Illinois team last season in addition to winning the Big Ten tide took the national collegiate title, the national A. A. U. crown, the northwestern championship and the Central A. A. U. championship. Veterans on the squad included Capt. Caton Cobb, national parallel bars and side horse champion, Louis Fina, Big Ten flying rings champ and Ollie Philips, mmbler.

With only mmbling remaining Navy was leading 19 to 17, but Illinois took a first and second place in the event while Na'vy placed third to give the westerners the match.

Walter Blattman, Navy captain, won the horizontal bars, with Cobb, second.

But Cobb took the side horse and parallel bars with Blattman second in each event.

SHIPMATE

James M. Parker, Jr., Navy, pulled an upset when he defeated Fina on the flying rings. Fina in addition to holding the Big Ten championship in this event, was ranked third as a national all-around gymnast in 1940.

PRINCETON

The Na'vy gymnasium team, opening its Eastern Intercollegiate League campaign swept every first place Feb. 14 to defeat the Princeton gymnasts, 42 to 12, on their home apparams. It was the second straight league defeat for the Tigers.

Blattman scored in both the high bar and the side horse to lead the midshipmen to their one-sided victory. Capt.

Jack Bigelow led Princeton widi seconds in the side horse and flying rings and a third place in parallel bars.

The Big Ten matmen notched their lone triumph when Ed Nethergot, 121pounder, earned the decision over Navy's Gano in the opening mssle. From that point on the Middies ran through the balance of the card.

Miles Taylor, was forced to withdraw in his go with Jake Joslin because of a dislocated knee. Mickey Bennett, Na'vy's eastern intercollegiate champion at 155 pounds, won by default when his foe, Ed McMillan, suffered a pulled muscle.

Navy acquired another five "free" points when the Wildcats failed to provide an opponent for Earl Buckwalter in the 135-pound division.

The Navy varsity riflemen swept the kneeling and standing shooting Jan. 24 to defeat the Georgetown University marksmen, 1,384 to 1,343.

Georgetown took the prone firing by one point, but the midshipmen rolled up a 10-point advantage kneeling and added 32 more from the standing position.

William E. Payne, Navy, was the high gun with a string of 279.

YALE

The midshipman riflemen outshot the Yale marksmen in every firing position Feb. 7 to win an indoor small bore, shoulder to shoulder match, 1,379 to 1,334.

The midshipmen gained a 12-point advantage in the prone shooting, added six more points in the kneeling firing and rolled up a 27-point advantage from the standing position.

P E N N STATE

Penn State defeated the Na'vy wrestling team before about 5,000 speaators on Jan. 17 at a match held at State College. The 16-14 score was indicative of the hard fought batde.

Na'vy was handicapped by having at least one of its leading wrestlers run afoul of academic difficulty before the match.

Charles Ridenour won the opening 121-pound bout for State by getting a fall over Bob Gano, Navy. Sam Harry took the 128-pound bout for Penn State by getting a fall over Charles Joslin. Bill Carmichael, Navy captain, mrned in a fall for the midshipmen, wirming from Bob Morgan in the 175-pound bout.

Needing a fall to tie the score, Shaffer Swift, Na'vy hea'vyweight, tried hard but was unable to pin his 225-pound opponent. Jack Kerns, State football star. Navy took the bout by decision.

NORTHWESTERN

The Na'vy pistol team swept its match with Yale, February 7, winning 1,326 to 1,270.

The midshipmen rolled up 18 points in slow fire, added 29 in the time firing and picked up nine more in rapid fire.

Tom McCleUan, Navy, was the high gun with a total score of 272, seven points ahead of his nearest competitor, his teammate, John Little.

The Navy wrestling team took four falls, two decisions and two forfeits Feb. 14 to defeat the Temple University grapplers, 36 to 0.

Joe Rugeriis, Temple, was forced to forfeit to Buckwalter in the 136-pound bout when he injured his arm when he was carried off the mat to the floor before one of the Middy's rushes.

Swift, Navy heavyweight, won his bout by forfeit from M. Jarmoluk.

Gano, Na'vy, tossed Steve Kiwatisky in the 121-pound bout. Holloway, Na'vy, pinned Irving Saltsman in the 145-pound class; Bennett, Na'vy eastern intercollegiate champion, had little trouble with JoeConcino, pinning the Temple wrestler twice in the 155-pound bout. Carmichael got another fall for Na'vy by pinning Al Cramer in the 165-pound match.

On the first trip away from the Naval Academy range on Feb. 14 the midshipmen riflemen defeated Carnegie Tech, 1,395 to 1,366 at Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Naval Academy junior varsity basketball team defeated the Bethlehem Accounting reserves, 43 to 19, January 22 in a game that was hard fought in the first period.

Both teams battled without scoring for six minutes after the opening whistle.

Then the players found the basket and with 10 minutes of the half gone the score was tied, 7-7.

The Jayvees began clicking and rolled up 12 points in a row, taking a 19 to 7

lead at half-time. The Bethlehem defense caved in under the Na'vy attack in the second period.

A smbborn St. Paul's Guild House basketball team of Baltimore lowered its colors to the Na'vy jayvee quint on January 29 by a 53 to 42 score.

The Baltimoreans put up a good fight, coming from behind to overcome an early Navy lead and move into a 22 tie at the end of the first period.

Edgar Hubbard with 11 points and Ed Plitt with nine were the key players in the Baltimore team's attack.

The Na'vy B squad defeated the Baltimore Y. M. C. A. basketball team Febmary 5, but only after five Plebe substimtes had been sent into the fray.

The Baltimoreans ended the first half with a 13 to 10 lead and held on to their advantage through the third quarter.

Then the Plebes were sent in and after five minutes mrned things around. Navy taking a 27 to 23 lead.

Hy Klein, captain and guard of the Baltimore quint, sparked his team with nine points. Allen Mayer, Navy player, got six points.

Plebes The West Virginia freshmen basketball team defeated the Plebes, 43 to 38 on January 17, holding the lead from the start.

Joe Walthall, West Virginia forward, sparked his team with 13 points, mostly on long shots. The West Virginians led 20 to 16 at die half.

The Plebe basketball team won an easy 59 to 17 victory January 24 over the Belmont Abbey quint from Belmont, N. C. The Plebe third string started the game and rolled up a 14 to 5 advantage when they mrned over to the first string at the beginning of the second period. The first team boosted the advantage to 29-8 when the half ended.

The first stringers played throughout the third period but gave way to the second team for the fourth stanza. Bud Bowler led the Plebes with 12 points.

The Georgetown University court freshmen team was too much for the Plebes to handle on January 31 and the young Hilltoppers came through with their tenth straight win by a 52 to 36 score.

Three Georgetown players, Lloyd Potolicchio, forward; Andy Kostecka, center, and Buddy Hassett, guard, rolled up 39 points. Potolicchio led with 15 points, Kostecka followed with 14 and Hassett mrned in 10.

After gaining a 15 to 8 advantage over the Plebe third team in the first quarter, the Georgetown players took on the Plebe first string and held a 27 to 19 advantage at half-time.

The Plebe swimming team won an easy victory over the Staunton Military Academy tankmen on January 31 taking six of the eight events to roll up a 44 to 22 score.

Dave Manning, plebe swimmer, turned in a double win, taking the 50-yard free style and the 100-yard free style.

The Virginians took the 150-yard medley relay and the 200-yard relay races. Bill Stuart, who swam for Staunton in the 150-yard medley relay also placed second in the 100-yard back stroke.

The wrestling team of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute came from behind in the last two bouts on January 31 to defeat the Plebe matmen, 14 to 12.

The Plebes were leading 12 to 8 when when Ben Dozier, Poly, got a decision over Allen Creek in the 175-pound class.

Rudy Karson,Doxier's teammate clinched the meet when he got a decision over Bill Strong in the unlimited class.

Will Skelps of Poly got the only fall when he pinned Bob Merrick in the 155pound class.

Taking the lead in the last 30 seconds of the last half the Plebe basketball team went on to defeat the Admiral Farragut Academy quint February 7 by a 32 to 22 score.

The Farragut team was leading 10 to 9 when the Plebe rally began. Luke Lynch and Ken Longnecker each sank field goals to put the young middies in the lead. Longnecker was the high scorer for the Plebes with 11 points.

Lou Hammond was the star of Farragut and high scorer with a total of 16 points, more than half of his team's tally.

The Plebe swimmers won the 300yard medley and the 400-yard relays and took first place in four individual contests February 7 to defeat the University of Pennsylvania freshmen tankmen, 45 to 30.

Bill Waymouth, Sherman Ames and Manning Clark were the first place winners for the little Quakers. Waymouth took the 200-yard free style and placed second in the 200-yard breast stroke.

Ames won the 50-yard free style and was second in the 100-yard free style. Clark was first in the 440-yard free style event.

Dave Manning, Plebe, nosed out Ames in the 100-yard free style race. Fred Berry won the fancy diving from the low board for the midshipmen. Bill Graham placed

first for the Plebes in the 100 yard back stroke.

The Plebe wrestling team mrned in its first mat victory on February 7 by downing the grapplers of Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, Pa., 19 to 9.

The Plebe gymnasium team opene the season on February 14 by sweepinl every event and defeating the Princetog University freshmen, 48 to 6.

The Plebes only allowed the freshmen one second place and three third places.

Wier Stewart got second on the horizontal bar; Eden Norris, third in the rope climb; Dere Acaster, third on the rings and Gray Eraser, third in mmbling.

Warren Hille was a high point winner for the Plebes taking first on the horizontal bar and placing second on the parallel bar and side horse.

The New York University freshmen fencers won with every weapon to defeat the Plebe fencers 17 to 10. The New Yorkers took the foil bouts, 6 to 3, won the epee contests, 6 to 3 and pulled through the sabre, 5 to 4. Essman of New York University won all his bouts with the foil while his teammate. Stein had a similar record with the epee.

The Plebe wrestling team on Febmary 14 won every bout to defeat the Teaneck High School grapplers, from Teaneck, N. J., 26 to 0. The Plebes took seven bouts by decision, while Joe Henson, Plebe, got a fall in the 145-pound class over Bob Busihio with a half-nelson after 6 minutes and 37 seconds of wrestling.

The George Washington University freshmen defeated the Plebe court team on Feb. 14 by a lone goal, with a 40 to 39 score. The teams were tied 23 to 23 at the half but the Plebes gained a sevenpoint margin in the second half only to lose it. Jack Ryan's two consecutive field goals took the lead from the young middies in the final two minutes of play.

BRANCH

The Chicago branch of the Naval Academy Alumni Association gathered about the festive board on January 30, 1942, for its first meeting of the new year. The usual rounds of "lubricants" were portioned from the "flowing bowl" by our usual dispenser until it seemed that we would have to make port for refueling.

However all hands made the "chow table" on even keel and none the worse for wear.

After a very hearty repast the one real business meeting of the year proceeded to get under way by the president, John Metcalf, who called for nominations for the offices of president, vice-president and secretary-treasurer.

Action was instantaneous! It seemed that President Metcalf had not had time to wonder who was going to be elected for his chair until it was found that John himself had been placed in the "driver's seat" for another term; quickly following this was the election of Hubert Burnham, class of 1905, as vice-president and the reelection of Les Baker 1922 as secretary-treasurer for another year. In moving that John Metcalf be unanimously reelected president. Swift Riche, class of 1914, stated that in all his time on the U. S. S. OUTsmE, dating from November 17, 1919, during which he had been a charter member of New York, Detroit, St. Louis and Chicago Alumni Associations he could not remember any association member who was more patriotic and had devoted so much of his time and effort over the years to aid and promote the Navy's welfare and interest among those in civilian life. After such a glowing tribute John was really "in" and there he now rests for another year. I am sure all of the Chicago branch will join with those present at the eleaion in wishing John a very "enterprising 1942."

The Chicago branch was doubly fortunate on this eventful evening. We had as our guest speaker non other than "Bill" Eddy, class of 1926, whom all of you know as the cartoonist supreme for the cover of the "Alumni Bulletin," the periodical of the Los Angeles branch (and if you haven't seen any of them why don't you send the amount of the subscription price to E. E. Meyer, Editor, and then get set for some good reading and a lot of laughs at "Bill's" cartoons). Besides Bill Eddy's uncanny ability with a pen and drawing paper he has also shown the Navy as well as the "unknowing" public that he can really do things in a big way with television and radio.

His talk to the Chicago branch concerning his work in these two fields was as interesting as

any this group has been privileged to hear.

His audience was held spellbound from the time he started talking until he was through and if you don't think we went to town on "megacycles" and the rest of the "phonies," at least as far as yours truly was concerned, just ask Lieut. David N. Goldenson. "Bill," aside from his experimental work in the fields mentioned above is now conducting a class of over a hundred men in the whys and wherefores of radio and through the personal eflfort and hard work of Captain Elliott M. Senn this class has been recognized as a tremendous step forward in the schooling of badly needed radio men.

It was an evening that those in attendance will never forget. Bill, our hat is oflf to you for your work and thanks a million for a most pleasant evening.

We of the Chicago branch would like to have it passed around to all parts of the globe that a NAVY man is always welcome in the "Windy City" and if he wants to meet up with some of his old "cronies" who may be living in the community a line or two to John Metcalf or Les Baker will start the ball rolling which may bring about the meeting with said "cronies" if at all possible. A "get-together" for lunch every Wednesday at the LaSalle Hotel is the regular thing here and if that is the day you are passing through please come over and have lunch with us. We can guarantee you a pleasant hour or two.

SAN FRANCISCO BRANCH An unanimous approval by the fifty present at our February dinner meeting changes our subsequent meetings to the first Wednesday of each month, and on this basis our next meeting will be called for 6:30 p. m., Wednesday, March 4, at the Army and Navy Club in the Fairmont Hotel.

The success of our dinner meetings is assured if the last one, which was our first attempt, is a criterion. The large number of our members, both out of the service and those on duty with the service, responded and enjoyed a more than usual and entertaining evening. The speaker of the occasion was Mr. B. D. Ochse, Trade Commissioner for the Netherlands' East Indies, who gave to us, with the amplification of some moving pictures, an up to date view of that part of the world as it exists today. We found that the Dutch East Indies had to the present not attempted to publicize its resources or its advantages, and the period of three hundred years which have marked the occupation by the Dutch was surveyed from the trade and social points of view.

The wellbeing of the natives was stressed in all considerations which the Dutch may make, and the business development and competition in the early days with the Portugese and English was outlined. We were told that the Dutch possessions are fifty times larger than the mother country and that Java is the most densely populated country in the world, there being six hundred fifty people to the square mile. We also found that of the seventy million natives in the Netherlands' Indies forty million are in Java. The technique of the control and administration by a small number of whites under such conditions and over such a large number of natives and of the success in so doing found at least one explanation in the fact that legislation long since passed places the economic basis in the village and the soil is owned only by the natives through their villages and communities. It develops that many of the natives of Java, by reason of the over population, have been moved to Sumatra and Borneo which is less densely populated; and these migrations are governed again by the natives themselves through the representatives of their villages. Among the resources of the Netherlands' East Indies we find that tin was discovered there in 1710, and later oil; and with the importation of rubber seeds the first cultivation of this valuable product was in 1883. Twenty-five per cent of the, world's output of tea comes from these islands, and after forty years of experimenting with the growth of tobacco, the year 1870 began its first cultivation. Ninety per cent of the world's quinine is grown here, and coffee which originated in Abyssinia was transplanted to Java in 1796. The great number of schools, the freedom of religion and of speech, and the deep rooted knowledge on the part of the natives as well as of the Dutch in the East Indies that they are fighting for their very homes and the soil they own presages a stiff resistance and an ultimate victory in the struggle which is now taking place.

It was with keen pleasure that we found among those present Rear Admiral Greenslade and his Chief of Staff, Captain Kilpat-

rick; Rear Admiral Hugo Osterhaus; Mr. Boris Eliacheff, the representative of Free France; Mr. Godfrey Fisher, Consul General of Great Britain; Mr. van Ryckervorsel, Vice-Consul of the Netherlands; and Admiral Shay of the Coast Guard.

The occasion and the subject were so propitious and so timely, that we invited as our dinner guests for the evening, Lieut. Comdr.

M. B. Wytema, Royal Dutch Navy; W. P. Montyn, Esq., .Netherlands Consul General; Godfrey A. Fisher, Esq., British Consul General; Mr. Boris Eliacheff, Representative du General de Gaulle; and Mr. T. Ostermeyer, President of the Shell Chemical Company.

Under date of January 7, 1942, from the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, and signed by Commander W. A. Brooks, Personnel Officer, a letter was received requesting that all of our Alumni Association be notified that as a two-ocean war has increased thei need of the Naval Service for the appointment' in the Naval Reserve of physically qualified graduates of the Academy or of former midshipmen who attended the Academy, it is the plan, even though these men are no longer qualified for sea duty, that their service can be employed ashore to take the place of other officers who are ordered to sea. The appointments would be particularly in the classification E-V(S), and candidates who qualify would be given proper rank which their previous training and experience entitles them.

Particularly pressing is the need for those having some experience in Marine Engineering,- Naval Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical and Radio Engineering. The office of Commander Brooks welcomes direct requests regarding appointment in the U. S. Naval Reserve, and an endeavor will be made to place the applicant when appointed in a billet where ] his service will be most useful to the National Defense.

Haller Belt, prior to the meeting, contaaed Admiral Halstead, a very loyal supporter of the Alumni but one who has not attended the meetings recently; and it was with regret that we learned of the Admiral's inability to be present.

Other guests present were Mr. Letchfield, Vice President of the Wells Fargo Bank; Colonel William Penn Humphrey, and last but not least, Captain Lewis Mesherry, who has always had a soft spot in his heart for the Navy.

By way of news we learn that Frank H. Wickhorst, who has been on the coaching staff at the University of California, has been detailed in charge of training of Navy aviators at one of the colleges in the East and is leaving to fulfill those duties.

During the evening a telegram was received from Los Angeles from Commander Wytema of the Royal Netherlands' Navy, expressing his regrets at not being present.

The youngest member of the Alumni proved to be James McRoberts, class of 1940.

Again please note that our meetings have been changed from the first Thursday of the month to the first Wednesday, and that they will consist of a dinner to be held at 6:30 p. m.. Army and Navy Club, The Fairmont Hotel. Note the date, March 4, and while the speaker has not been definitely announced, you may rest assured that a very interesting and enjoyable evening is in store for all.
