o u can get the cold facts of the Battle of Midway out of the official Navy communique, and they won't stay cold, if you're a living, breathing, red-blooded American; certainly not if you're Navy.

They'll leap up at you, from the printed page, and take a half-hitch around your imagination, and yank it off a hundred miles, or a thousand, or ten thousand, to that stretch of storm-ridden, deep-grey ocean where Navy men proved once more that they've got what it takes. And you'll start filling in the detail for yourself. You won't be able to help it.

But you won't begin to get the picture in focus unless you go behind the official communique. Not that you can get the whole picture, now, or maybe ever. Ten or twenty years from now they'll be writing books about that battle, and about phases of it, and about mere incidents of the phases. Your imagination may be a 4.0 job, streamlined and with de-luxe equipment, but it's got to have something to work with; and this battle was big enough, and bitter enough, and vicious enough,—yes, and new enough, in the way it was fought—that no men living could draw on their own experience for the details, unless they were in it.

The next best thing is to listen to some of the men who were in it, and lived through it; and to learn about some of the things some of them did, and some of the things some of them saw. Then you can really begin to get the picture; not all of it, but a bit here and there, so that imagination of yours can cast off, and up anchor, and start voyaging around filling in the background.

Of course, the men who were in that battle aren't right on hand at your elbow to be listened to, ear to lip. But some of them have told their stories, and a lot of them have told other men's stories, and had their own stories told by other men.

Here are a few of those stories, tossed at you like a handful of jigsaw pieces. Maybe you won't be able to fit them together.

Clarence Wade McClusky, Jr., '26, Lt. Comdr., USN, led the second squadron to hit the Jap fleet at Midway. He analyzed the situation when his squadron failed to find the Nips where they expected to find them, and banked around on a "reverse" course. About forty minutes after Torpedo Squsdron No. 8 had shattered itself in its heroic attack, Lt. Comdr. McClusky's squadron saw a cluster of dark hulls crawl over the horizon; flashed the new course and position of the enemy; and then dived in to unload their bomb racks on the main Jap concentration of four carriers, two battleships, four to six cfuisers, and six destroyers.

It was later the same day that the Yorktown was attacked. Ever hear the song about the ten little Indians? It was pretty much like that onlv it was no nursery play. Thirty-six Jap planes from the carrier Hiryu started the attack.

Eighteen bombers in the group were intercepted by Navy fighters. Eleven were shot down, before they could drop their bombs. Then there were seven. One was disintegrated by ack-ack from a surface

vessel. Then there were six. One dropped its bombload into the sea, and plunged after it. Then there were five. One was torn to shreds by machine-gun fire from Navy fighting planes. Then there were four. The four got away, after scoring three direct hits.

If they got back to the Hiryu, it was their tough luck, because a little later planes from the Yorktown located the Nip carrier, set her ablaze from stem to stern with repeated hits, and she sank the next morning.

While the Yorktown's flying men were doing that job on the Hiryu, another flight of about 15 Jap planes, torpedo planes this time, attacked the Yorktown.

Navy fighting planes got seven, then there were eight. Ask-ack got three, then there were five. All five got their torpedoes away, but not one of the five got away themselves. One of the torpedoes scored a hit which put the Yorktown out of action, gave her a list which rendered her flight deck useless. But her planes didn't go out of action. "We're Tokyo, Rome and Berlin Bound" O

N June 19 of this year, the largest graduating class in the history of the U. S. Naval Academy filed into Dahlgren Hall to hear Admiral Ernest J. King deliver the address that was to mark the end of their period of studies and the beginning of their active service on the warfronts of the world. No mistaking, it was a wartime class. Its official slogan was "We're Tokyo, Rome and Berlin Bound." It was the first three-year class of World War II. But its June Week events were among the most gala, the most impressive, the most colorful ever seen at the Academy.

The major celebrations began on the 17th of June with the presentation of prizes to the graduating class.

A surprise kiss for the color girl at the

color ceremony on the afternoon of the 18th made the front pages from coast to coast. The color girl this year was Miss Ruth Helena Reed, of Madawask, Maine, chosen by Midshipman S. J. Cowin, commander of the winning company. Before the 2,500 midshipmen in their full dress blue-and-white. Miss Reed, looking as lovely as her tradition demanded in a breeze-whipped pink organdy dress and picture hat, stepped forward to present the colors to Cowin. Before the startled gaze of the midshipmen, guests, and Rear Admiral Beardall alike, Cowin responded by implanting a fervent and resounding kiss on the young lady—the first kiss at a color ceremony for several years. It came out in the subsequent interviews, however, that Mdn. Cowin and Miss Reed

were e n g a g e d to be m a r r i e d .

As soon as the colors were presented, the assembled midshipmen gave forth with the traditional cheer for the color girl, followed by a cheer for the winning company. Then they moved off in full dress parade—doubly impressive this year both because more students were parading than ever before in the history of the Academy and also because of the knowledge that in a matter of weeks many of those parading would be fighting in the far corners of the globe.

On the evening of the 18th the Farewell Ball was held, enjoyed most of all by the plebes, conscious of giving their girls their first Annapolis dance.

Graduation ceremonies were held the following morning. Despite wartime re-

strictions on general visitors, the Yard was overrun with proud mothers and fathers, proud aunts and uncles, proud sweethearts and little brothers. Together with the unusually large number of midshipmen, they jammed Dahlgren Hall to capacity. On the speakers' platform, in addition to leading Naval figures, were diplomats and officials from many of the United Nations and South American Republics.

The principal speaker. Admiral Ernest J. King, COMINCH, was introduced

by Rear Admiral Beardall, who presented him as a distinguished officer and a graduate of the Academy "who has always measured up to the highest ideals of duty and great responsibility." Admiral King sounded the keynote by telling the 611 graduating midshipmen that the United States could be fully confident of winning "the greatest war in history" only at the cost of "unremitting labor and a multitude of heartaches and sacrifices such as this country has never before known." He urged the graduates to take proper pride in the prestige and power of the Navy, but not to forget that the other great service, the Army, "also wears the uniform of our Country," as do our fellow services of the Navy, the Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

"Do not allow yourselves to become prejudiced because another wears a different uniform and is skilled in the use of different weapons," he continued. "Let there be no narrow-minded jealousy, no bootless controversy, but rather a firm determination to gain the victory by whole-hearted cooperation and by thorough appreciation and cordial emulation of the capacities and abilities of all those who are, in fact and in deed, your brothers in arms.

"To this end we have only to bear in mind the association of the United States armed forces in Bataan, on Corregidor, in Java, in the Coral Sea and more recently in the actions off Midway and in Alaskan waters to have it impressed upon us that we are, all of us, working together for victory."

The graduating class listened intently and enthusiastically to Admiral King's address, and then received their diplomas.

This year, to expedite the ceremony, the company commanders came forward to receive the diplomas for their particulai units. Cheers went up, of course, as each company commander came forward. William R. Riblett, of Detroit, the number one man of the class, and Robert R. Price, the anchor man, were given equally vigorous ovations. {Continued on page 36)

From the Baltimore Sun, 7/7.—In one day of happy hunting, our submarines have attained an unmistakable success.

In this particular area Japan's destroyers could be very useful in fending off our attacks, and there is high satisfaction over this full destruction of three, and serious injury to a fourth . . . Those who have followed the guarded discussion of our navy program for bases in oui: overseas possessions will remember that the Hepburn report of 1938 stressed the need for a base as far as possible westward in Alaska, from which could be operated both airplanes and submarines.

With far more knowledge than possessed by our public (or even by our navy as a whole at the time) Admiral A. J. Hepburn and his colleagues explained long ago that, vital as airplanes were in that area, there would be long periods when they could not operate at all; submarines would be fully as necessary. The accuracy of this judgment has been painfully apparent in the month since the Japanese moved in upon the outlying Aleutians, occupied Kiska and Attu, and bombed our important base of Dutch Harbor. The navy has said very little officially of its Aleutian operations since that time. . . .

It can be surmised, however, that throughout this period both army and navy patrols have been searching the Aleutians steadily, whenever weather permitted . . . A summary of the Aleutians communiques to date shows that both army and navy planes have for some time been in synchronized operation under control of Admiral Chester W.

Nimitz, whose over-all responsibility stretches from Alaskan waters to the South Seas; that together they and the submarines have now sunk certainly one cruiser, three destroyers and one transport and damaged nine vessels . . . It would be possible to become too exhuberant over this, and to feel that there was merit in a naval officer's initial judgment that occupation of the far Aleutians might prove a liability to Japan as well as to us. Maybe so, but there is no doubt that the navy, like the public, will be relieved when the Japanese are entirely expelled from the Aleutians. While they linger there they can threaten our own installations farther .east, they can block the Russian freight communication between our West Coast and the Siberian ports, and they can tie down some of our fleet, which Admiral Nimitz may well wish to use elsewhere. Their complete expulsion is certainly the objective.

From the New York Times, 7/7.—

Aleutian Fog . . . It is this fog that has made it possible for the Japanese to land without resistance and hold their ground and that has so handicapped our bombers . . . On the other hand, fog can be an advantage to submarines if they know approximately where the enemy may be.

They can creep up unobserved to close range with more than the usual chance of striking home. This is apparently what happened on July 4, if we interpret correctly the latest news from Washington . . . On July 2, one of the days described in the earlier communique as "difficult," the ships had been sighted. Presumably

airplanes outside of the Japan Current in fairly clear weather radioed their discovery back, with the result that one destroyer, an escorting vessel, was sunk. It follows that though fog may thwart our bombers it will also make it difficult for the Japanese to supply their Aleutian troops with reinforcements and supplies.

From the Philadelphia Record, 7/7.— Up to now, we've only had Army bombers up there. The real news is that the Navy is now in action. We're glad to see this latest action. We hope it means a major move to drive the Japs out of the Aleutians is under way. In our humble opinion, it would be the rankest folly to gamble on their presence as being harmless, as some say. Too many Jap moves that looked trifling have turned out to be mighty bad for our side . . . The Jap effort in that area is not a sideline, but a major move to put a Jap air and naval base within easy range of Dutch Harbor and Alaska, and astride our bomber route to Tokyo—and on the flank of our Pacific supply line to Russia . . . So, let's not treat this thrust as a minor matter.

The Japs are on our doorstep. And if they think that's important—we dare not think otherwise.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer, 7/7.

—This infesting of American soil by Japanese invaders has been deeply resented by our people. The public has been, in turn, both indignant and puzzled at the apparent lack of action to drive them out. The official explanation of frequent and protracted fogs, that interfered with flying weather, preventing intensive air attacks from American land bases, didn't satisfy civilians. Why weren't we there first? . . . If the good work of throwing the Japs out of the Aleutians has now begun in earnest, there is reason to rejoice. There is no discount on the dash and efficiency of America's fighting men once they plunge into action. Now is the time to finish the job, to purge the Aleutians of our wily enemies. Give the Japs no rest until they rue the day they thought they could take over a single spot of American territory and get away with it.

ILLIAM H E N R Y STAYTON, who was born in Delaware on March 28, 1861, entered the U. S. Naval Academy June 21, 1877; graduated as a membei of the famous class of '81; died July 12, 1942 at his home in Smyrna, Delaware.

He was 81 years old.

Into this long life was packed much activity. After graduation he served in the Navy and Marine Corps until June, 1891. He again served in the Navy for a few months during the Spanish-American War. This covers his active service in the Navy but is far short of his active service for the Navy. He served the Navy from the day he entered the Naval Academy until the day of his death.

SHIPMATE will not attempt to say much in regard to his distinguished career in private life other than to remark that he had convictions and the courage of them. He had remarkable ability to organize and to lead which accounts for his many accomplishments in private business and public affairs.

What we do wish to record here is something of his devotion to the Navy and in particular to the U. S. Navy Academy and its Alumni.

N o man has lived who was more loyal to the Academy. For many years he was President of the Alumni Association. As a matter of fact he was President until he finally "begged off" when, with regret in

having him give up active control, the Alumni made him President Emeritus.

The first paragraph mentions his full nameâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;William Henry Stayton â&#x20AC;&#x201D;but many a younger friend would hardly recognize him by that name.

His classmates, of the class of '81, who have survived him would, of course, and many of his older friends, but to thousands he was known as Captain Bill, and he was known affectionately as Captain Bill. Yes, it is true there was only one Captain Bill, strange as it may seem to those who were not fortunate enough to have known him.

Why was he so devoted to the U. S. Naval Academy and its Alumni? Well, he had a big heart and a grand soul, but that hardly answers the question. SHIPMATE feels that his devotion was due to the fact that he recognized better than any the true worth of his Alma Mater.

He felt a debt of gratitude to her, and feeling it he had to act accordingly. He could not help doing something about those things which became a part of his great soul. He acted. No man has lived who has done more for the graduates of the

U. S. Naval Academy. He kept the old Graduates Association on its feet, he revived it, he reorganized it into the present flourishing Alumni Association, and during his control SHIPMATE came into being.

Many a young graduate in addition to his host of old friends will mourn his passing. "I saw Captain Bill the other day." "Well, how is he?" "He is fine, still going strong."

"That's good, I think he is the grandest man I ever knew." This conversation has been repeated among his host of friends many and many a time. We all are sad.

SHIPMATE is a word that is dear to the hearts of Navy men. It means so much. It means more than he was a classmate of mine, or he was a friend of mine.

Captain Bill was laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery on July 15 th. We feel he was the personification of the name of this publication. In life he discharged his debt of gratitude to his Alma Mater, and in death he will be an inspiration to all Alumni to emulate his devotion to the best interests of the Navy Academy and its Alumni. He was a grand Shipmate.

Spring Brings Distinguished Visitors L

ONG a show place, the Naval Academy has always attracted hordes of visitors, both prominent and obscure.

This year, due to wartime necessity, restrictions have been placed on any casual visits. But what the Academy has lacked in quantity of visitors, it has made up in quality. The war in Europe has had a rw'o-fold effect. It has forced rulers to make good an escape, in order to set up governments-in-exile, before the invading Nazis; and it has brought many prominent statesmen and military men to this country on special missions.

Almost without exception, these visitors to the United States are interested in visiting the Naval Academy. In many cases Naval officers have been among their chief sources of contact with Americans.

So, in greater numbers this Spring than any other in recent years, distinguished visitors have toured the grounds and buildings at Annapolis. Some of the more prominent are shown here.

HE Italians won't soon forget Admiral Sir Andrew Browne Cunningham. As Commander-in-Chief of Britain's Mediterranean Fleet, he wrote finis to their dream of "mare nostrum" with his smashing victories at Cape Matapan and Taranto. And soon the other Axis powers may well have reason to remember him, for as Head of the British Admiralty Delegation to the United States he brings to the Service of all the United Nations his wealth of first-hand fighting experience.

described Admiral Cunningham. A good man, therefore, to work with tough, offensive-minded Admiral Ernest J. King, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Fleet. As Washington becomes more and more the center of the entire war effort, the personnel of the United Nations' military missions here become increasingly important. Recognizing this, the British Admiralty has appointed in Admiral Cunningham a man with the fullest war experience and the most outstanding record of command. No swivelchair Admiral, he has faced the enemy from a warship's deck in three separate wars.

Although he has spent forty-one of his fifty-eight years at sea. Admiral Cunningham's heritage is anything but military. His grandfather headed a Divinity school, and his father was a Professor of Anatomy at Edinburgh and Dublin.

It was in the latter city that Andrew was born on the seventh of January, 1883.

and Stubbington House, Fareham, he joined the Royal Navy when he was only 14 years of age. A year later he was aboard H.M.S. DORIS, seeing service in the Boer War, for which he received the Queen's South African Medal.

It was in the World War, however, that Cunningham won his first enduring fame. He had entered the Destroyer command in 1908, and was destined to spend the greater part of his subsequent career in this duty. And it was on the Destroyer H.M.S. SCORPION, which he had the usual record of commanding for seven years, that he first demonstrated the daring tactics for which he became noted.

The action occurred after the evacuation of GaUipoli, when Cunningham was in command of a small detached force in the Aegean. One sea attack had already been repulsed from a small harbor, so he decided upon a bold assault.

After first ordering stout reinforcements of sandbags around the bridge and decks cleared for action, he sheered the SCORPION into the narrow entrance to the harbor. At the incredibly short range of 50 yards, enemy marskmen sent a hail of bullets at the ship, and Cunningham's (Continued on page 37)

Excuse us while we settle back and enjoy the relaxation of our leave. We are home in "God's country" where the grass is greener, the air is purer, and the night is more romantic. Home is the only place where a midshipman can go to bed and get up whenever he wishes, where he can eat what he wants whenever he wants it, and where he can ride in a car anywhere at any time (that is, of course, if he can get gasoline).

"What will you have for supper, boys?

WiU fried chicken do? Or would you rather have steak or pork chops? What time do you want dinner?"

Yes sir, you are captain of the ship when you are at home.

Now if we can break away from the ecstasy of leave, we shall mentally travel back to the Academy to give you the hot dope for this month. Even when we are away on leave, we obtain news about the Naval Academy.

The first members of the class of 1946 started their physical examinations on Monday, June 22. On the first three days of each week, one hundred candidates report for examination. This will continue until the total number of 1235 prospective men are checked over. The members of the class of '46 will more than double the class of '43 which graduated this past June. The Executive Department does not expect to have any difficulty in quartering them, but crowded conditions are anticipated in the mess hall. If the situation should become acute, the Academy will take measures to solve the problem. An extension or annex might be added, or a different schedule for meals might be managed. Nevertheless, we do not expect to sit down at the table and wonder if we are eating out of our neighbor's plate or not.

The Executive Department is experimenting with the new fourth classmen.

Instead of having upper-classmen direct the plebes as the custom has been for years, the class of '46 will indoctrinate themselves. A new regimental order 110-40 has been issued to the plebes for the summer term. They cannot visit the upper-classmen, and the upper-classmen

are not allowed to be in the Fourth Class Battalion. They do not square corners in their own battalion, and they sit at one end of the mess hall out of the upperclassmen's grasp. In short, they are thoroughly enjoying "plebe summer." However, this pleasure will end when Academic Year begins, because the first and third classmen will supervise a real "plebe year." It will be difficult for the fourth classmen when the academic year starts, because they will have trouble trying to forget their carefree civilian days and "plebe summer" days. They will be attacked by a barrage of questions from the upper-classmen and by the snares of the Academic Departments. In previous years, the officers told midshipmen that they should not ask the question, "Why?", because there was a good reason behind each regulation. This year, the plebe is told why he must do this and that. Here's hoping that it will make them more devoted to duty than they might be otherwise.

they lunched at the Superintendent's quarters as guests of Admiral and Mrs. Beardall. Last Sunday, King Peter II, of Yugoslavia, visited the Academy. The king and his staff went to chapel, made a brief inspection of Bancroft Hall, and had dinner at the Superintendent's house.

The Department of Physical Training has added three new tests to its already rigorous swimming program. The first classmen will now be required to swim fifty yards fully clothed with a twentypound pack on their backs. In addition to this, they must know how to jump from a three-meter board. The idea behind these two tests is to prepare us for sudden torpedo attacks that we may .experience when we join the fleet. The third classmen will be required to swim twenty yards under water; this will prepare them to meet the danger presented by burning oil on the water. According to Henry Ortland, swimming instructor, the usual crawl stroke should be eliminated in swimming when clothed. Breast strokes, side strokes, and back strokes will be emphasized. The Physical Training Department is stressing swimming as a means to meet the hazards of the sea.

Speaking of swimming reminds us that the midshipmen have a swimming beach now. It is located on Cemetery Point where the Academy recently reclaimed some of the land. They have a large area marked by white floats which show where it is safe to swim. The Physical Training Department published a list of midshipmen who are capable of being life guards, and the Executive Department has furnished the beach with a rowboat for the life guards. As yet, there is no bathhouse or place to change one's clothes in the near vicinity, but a bathhouse may be constructed if we show enough interest in the project. Midshipmen are not permitted to take their drags in swimming with them, but if a bathhouse is built, they may be able to take their drags in swimming whenever they wish. At the present time, the upper-classmen may take their dates and sit on the beach with them. It will prove to be one of the biggest pleasures for our summers, and everyone is working enthusiastically to make the project a success.

The first day that the new plebes had been sworn in, a long line of third classmen sat on cruise boxes on the terrace deck of the first battalion. As the fourth classmen walked back and forth to the store, they fell into the hands of the youngsters. As one big husky plebe came by, carrying a heavy load of gear from the store, a third classmen walked out of his room with a baseball bat on his shoulder. The plebe's mouth dropped open; he threw his gear into the air; and he quickly disappeared around the corner and down the ladder from which he had just come. The youngster scratched his head in amazement, and continued on his way to baseball practice. Navy Team Turns In Good Record With athletics at the Naval Academy following summer routine pending the beginning of varsity football practice this FaU, a check of the records of the 1941-1942 season showed that the Navy teamsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;varsity, junior varsity and plebe â&#x20AC;&#x201D;turned in a victory record of 68.6 percent in all contests.

A total of 236 events were listed during the period in 17 sports, with the midshipmen winning 162, losing 67 and getting ties in seven.

WINS SWORD WiUiam Sergeant Busik, who starred in the left halfback position on the Navy footbaU teams the past two seasons won the Navy Athletic Association sword for personal excellence in athletics, and his teammate, Robert Joseph Zoeller, won the Thompson Trophy cup for the promotion of athletics.

The two midshipmen received their awards during the annual June week presentation parade held on Worden Field on June 17.

Their loss through graduation will be felt by both football and basketbaU teams.

Busik, who came from Pasadena, Calif., was a triple threat man and could pass, kick and carry the ball with equal skill.

He played in every football game of the 1940 and 1941 seasons roUing up 514 minutes of actual competition.

He was a member and co-captain with Zoeller of the varsity basketball team, playing a guard position. During the

1941 season he scored 82 points, his competition in the early season games being curtailed by a broken arm. During 1942 he netted 126 points.

Besides his football and basketbaU activities he was a member of the varsity track squad for two years, competing in the broad jump and javelin events. He wears two football "N-stars" and one basketball "N-star" and an "N." In track he won the NA monogram both years.

ZoeUer, of New Albany, Ind., also won two "N-stars" in football and an "N-star" and "N" in basketball.

Playing in the left end slot on the football team he was one of the mainstays of the machine, particularly when it came to receiving passes. He played eight games in 1940 and all nine during 1941, a total of A96V2 minutes of competition.

On the basketball court, Zoller played a forward position scoring 115 points in 1941 and 131 in 1942.

Parker, Jr., flying rings, captured the national collegiate titles this year. Blattmann, horizontal barist, Davis and Parker won Eastern intercollegiate championships.

Three Eastern intercollegiate wrestling champions, Capt. Bill Carmichael, 165 pounds; Mickey Bennet, 155 pounds, and Sophomore Charles (Swifty) Smith, heavyweight, received "N-stars" for their titular achievements while Carmichael received an "N" for 1941 wrestling.

N the shores of Lake Michigan, the Navy is training seamen whose impact will soon be felt by the Axis all over the seven seas. Here, a thousand miles from the nearest ocean, the Navy is producing a stream of fighting sailors to man the warships being turned out at record-shattering speed.

The Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, lU. (40 miles north of Chicago), supplies approximately 35 per cent of the fleet's enlisted personnel. It is living proof of the Navy's ability to create the many-ocean force needed for victory.

Each week, thousands of raw recruits enter the accelerated training program at Great Lakes. A few weeks later, they emerge hardened seamen, ready to sail and fight.

As they enter, they are a motley crew of land-lubbers, varying in age from 17 to 50, coming from every walk of life, every corner of the nation. They are raw material, but they are good raw material.

The process that turns him into a sailor is a miracle of speed and efficiency. By the time he has been outfitted and taught how to salute, he has already begun to look like a sailor. He is toughened by vigorous, enjoyable athletics. He learns to sleep in a hammock and keep himself and his equipment shipshape. He learns to call things by their correct seagoing names. He acquires the discipline, skiU and enthusiasm which will make him a valuable part of a fighting ship's com-

pany.

Almost before he realizes it, he graduates and goes to the Outgoing Unit. Here he awaits the orders sending him to sea or shore duty, where he completes his training.

Great Lakes is but one of the Navy's four major training centers. Multiply the Great Lakes story to include the humming beehives at Norfolk, Va., San Diego, Cal., and Newport, R. I., and you see how the Navy is meetingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;and beatingâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the greatest expansion problem in its history.

3. On June 25 Navy reconnaissance aircraft over the Kiska area observed one large cruiser and three destroyers in the harbor of Kiska. The bow of the Japanese transport, which was sunk by Army aircraft on June 18, was clearly visible near the center of the harbor. During these operations a Navy patrol plane was attacked and damaged by enemy aircraft but returned safely to its base.

4. On June 26 two Army planes attacked shore installations at Kiska but again fog did not permit results to be observed.

5. On June 28 Army bombers again attacked Kiska, doing further damage to shore installations. From June 28 to July 2 the weather was such as to render flight operations inadvisable.

6. On July 2 a patrol plane observed 3 Japanese transports with escorting vessels off the island of Agattu, about thirty-five miles to the southeastward of Attu. Army bombers attacked this force that afternoon inflicting damage, the exact extent of which could not be observed. Our aircraft r e turned safely having suffered only minor damage from anti-aircraft fire.

7. On July 3 Kiska was again bombed by Army aircraft but again observation of results was not possible.

July 6, 1942.

COMMUNIQUE NO. 95

The Navy Department today issued the following communique based on reports received up to 12:30 P. M., July 6, 1942: North Pacific Area 1. On the Fourth of July, U. S. submarines torpedoed four Japanese destroyers in the Aleutian Islands.

2. Three of these destroyers were attacked at Kiska. Two were sunk and the third, when last seen, was burning fiercely.

3. The fourth destroyer was torpedoed and sunk at Agattu where enemy transports and escorting vessels were located on July 2 and were attacked by Army bombers.

1. Early in June, near the island of Midway about 1100 miles to the westward of Pearl Harbor, units of our Army, Navy, and Marine Corps joined action with a strong Japanese invasion fleet which was approaching our Midway outpost. The voluminous reports of the details of the battle of Midway have been studied and evaluated so that this resume now becomes possible.

2. After the defeat of the Japanese in the Battle of the Coral Sea between May 4 and May 8, our shore-based reconnaissance aircraft and submarines reported a general withdrawal of enemy naval ships from the southwest Pacific toward Japan. Concentrations of enemy naval units made it apparent that large scale offensive operations were planned by the enemy, but the exact nature of the plan of attack could only be guessed.

The enemy had learned in the Battle of the Coral Sea that the sea approaches to Australia were strongly defended. It appeared logical, therefore, to assume that the enemy's next thrust would come in some other area â&#x20AC;&#x201D;^possibly Hawaii, Alaska, the Panama Canal Zone, or even the Pacific Coast of the United States. In accordance with this estimate.United States naval surface forces were deployed in the area between Midway and the Aleutian Islands. Bases in the outlying islands and in Alaska were reinforced by long-range, shore-based aircraft. Similar precautionary measures also were taken on the Pacific Coast and in the vicinity of the Panama Canal.

3. At about 9:00 A. M., June 3, U. S. Navy patrol planes reported a strong force of enemy ships about 700 miles off Midway, proceeding eastward. Nine U. S. Army "Flying Fortresses" based on Midway immediately were ordered to intercept and attack the approaching enemy. The Japanese force was observed to be approaching in five columns and was composed of many cruisers, transports, cargo vessels and other escort ships. The Army bombers scored hits on one cruiser and one transport. Both ships were severely damaged and left burning. Some lesser damage was done to other vessels in the formation. Later during the night, four Navy "Catalina" flying boats located and attacked the same enemy group by moonlight. These four planes scored two torpedo hits on large enemy ships, one of which is believed to have sunk.

4. About dawn on June 4, several groups of Army medium and heavy bombers, and U. S. Marine Corps dive bombers and torpedo planes took to the air from Midway to iattack the approaching enemy. The results of this attack were as follows: (a) Four Army torpedo bombers attacked two enemy aircraft carriers through a heavy screen of enemy

fighter protection and a curtain of anti-aircraft fire. One torpedo hit on a carrier is believed to have been made. Two of the four bombers failed to return. (b) Six Marine Corps torpedo planes attacked the enemy force in the face of heavy odds. It is believed this group secured one hit on an enemy ship. Only one of these six planes returned to its base. (c) Sixteen Marine Corps dive bombers attacked and scored three hits on a carrier, which is believed to have been the SORYU. Only half of the attacking planes returned. (d) Another group of 11 Marine Corps dive bombers made a later attack on enemy ships and reported two bomb hits on an enemy battleship, which was left smoking and listing. (e) A group of 16 U. S. Army "Flying Fortresses" carried out high-level bombing attacks, scoring three hits on enemy carriers. One carrier was left smoking heavily.

5. Meanwhile, at 6:35 A. M. (Midway time, June 4th), shortly after the Marine Corps planes had left Midway to carry out an attack mission, the island, itself, was attacked by a large group of carrier-based enemy planes. They were engaged by a badly out-numbered Marine Corps fighter force, which met the enemy in the air as he arrived. These defending fighters, aided by anti-aircraft batteries, shot down at least 40 of the enemy planes. Several more were damaged. As the result of this fighter defense, the material damage to shore installations, though serious, was not disabling. No plane was caught grounded at Midway.

6. The Midway-based air forces had struck the approaching Japanese fleet with their full strength, but the enemy did not appear to have been checked.

It was estimated that only about 10 enemy ships had been damaged out of a total enemy force of approximately 80 ships then converging upon Midway.

7. It was learned later that our aerial attacks had caused the enemy carrier force to change its course.

They began a retirement to the northwestward some time between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m., on the morning of June 4.

Their complete change of course was not observed by our shore-based planes because the change came after the planes had delivered their attacks and while they were returning to Midway to rearm.

8. Meanwhile, U. S. Naval forces afloat were being brought into position. Our carrier-based aircraft were launched and were proceeding to the spot where the enemy's previous course and speed would have placed him had he chosen to continue the assault, as expected. Unaware of the enemy's change of course, one group of carrier-based fighters and dive bombers searched along the reported track to the southeast until shortage of gas forced them to abandon the search and go in to Midway. Some were forced down at sea when they ran out of gas. Most of those forced down were later rescued. The commanding officer of a different flight composed of fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo planes made an accurate

August, 1942 estimate of the situation and concluded that the enemy was retreating.

Fifteen torpedo planes from this group, therefore, located the enemy to the westward and proceeded to attack at once without protection or assistance of any kind. Although some hits were reported by radio from these airplanes and although some enemy fighters were shot down, the total damage inflicted by this squadron in this attack may never be known. None of these 15 planes returned. The sole survivor of the 30 officers and men of this squadron was Ensign G. H. Gay, Jr., U.S.N.R., who scored one torpedo hit on an enemy carrier before he was shot down.

9. Other carrier-based groups of torpedo planes proceeded to press the attack after the enemy had been located. In spite of heavy losses during these attacks, the torpedo planes engaged the attention of the enemy flghters and anti-aircraft batteries to such a degree that our dive bombers were able to drop bomb after bomb on the enemy ships without serious interference. As the result, the Navy dive bombers scored many hits and during this phase of the action inflicted upon the enemy the following damage: (a)

aircraft carriers, were severely damaged. Gasoline in planes caught on their flight decks ignited, starting flres which burned untU each carrier had sunk. (b) Two battleships were hit. One was left burning flercely. (c) One destroyer was hit and is believed to have sunk.

10. Shortly after this battle, a force of about 36 enemy planes from the undamaged carrier HIRYU attacked the U. S. aircraft carrier YORKTOWN and her escorts. Eleven of 18 Japanese bombers in the group were shot down by our flghters before their bombs were dropped. Seven got through our flghter protection. Of these 7, one was disintegrated by a surface ship's antiaircraft fire; a second dropped its bombload into the sea and plunged after it; while a third was torn to shreds by machine-gim fire from U. S. fighter planes. Four enemy bombers escaped after scoring three direct hits.

11. Shortly afterward, 12 to 15 enemy torpedo planes escorted by fighters attacked the YORKTOWN. Between 4 and 7 of this group were destroyed by our fighters and 3 were shot down by anti-aircraft fire before they could launch their torpedoes. Five succeeded in launching torpedoes but all 5 were destroyed as they attempted to escape.

The YORKTOWN was hit during this assault and put out of action. The damage caused a list which rendered her fiight deck useless for landings and take-offs. Her aircraft, however, continued the battle operating from other United States carriers.

12. While this attack on the YORKTOWN was in progress, some of her own planes located the Japanese carrier HIRYU in company with battleships, cruisers and destroyers. Our carrier planes immediately launched an attack against this newly located force. The HIRYU was hit repeatedly and left blazing from stem to stern.

She sank the following morning. Two of the enemy battleships were pounded severely by bombs and the

August, 1942 heavy cruiser was damaged severely.

13. During the same afternoon (June 4), a United States submarine scored three torpedo hits on the smoking carrier SORYU as the enemy was attempting to take it in tow. These hits caused an outbreak of fresh fiames which engulfed the carrier and forced the crew to abandon ship. At about sunset heavy explosions and huge billows of smoke were observed.

The SORYU sank during the night.

14. Just before sunset (June 4) United States Army bombers delivered a heavy bomb attack on the severely crippled and burning ships. Three hits were scored on a damaged carrier (probably the AKAGI) ; one hit was scored on a large ship; one hit on a cruiser which was left burning; and one destroyer was damaged and believed to have sunk.

15. The situation at sundown en June 4, was as follows: (a) United States forces had gained mastery of the air in the region of Midway. (b) Two carriers, KAGA and AKAGI,

had been hit by many bombs and torpedoes from Army planes and carrierbased Naval aircraft in the morning, and the AKAGI had been further damaged by Army aircraft in the late afternoon. One of these two carriers was reported by Ensign Gray to have been shelled and finished off by a Japanese cruiser. Both enemy carriers sank or were sunk by the Japanese before morning. (c) The SORYU had been hit heavily

by Marine Corps dive bombers. Army bombers, carrier-based planes, and a submarine. She sank during the night. (d) The HIRYU had been put out of action by carrier aircraft after her own planes had damaged the YORKTOWN. The HIRYU sank early the following morning. (e) Two enemy battleships had been damaged, one severely. (f) One enemy destroyer had been simk. (g) One enemy transport and several other ships had been damaged. (h) The USS YORKTOWN had been put out of action.

16. Early in the morning of June 5, an enemy submarine shelled Midway briefiy but caused no damage.

Our shore batteries returned the fire.

At dawn our forces were marshalling their strength for further assaults against the enemy fleets which by now had separated into several groups, all in full retreat. Unfavorable flying weather made search to the northwest of Midway difficult and hazardous but a flight of U. S. Army "Plying Fortresses" managed to contact an enemy contingent of battleships and cruisers to the westward of Midway. They attacked, and scored a direct hit on the damaged cruiser. Another bomb damaged the same cruiser's steering gear.

She was last observed listing badly and turning in tight circles. This attack was followed quickly by a second Army air force attack which scored a hit on the stern of a heavy cruiser.

Meanwhile, at about noon (June 5) U. S. Marine Corps aircraft located the damaged enemy cruiser and delivered one direct hit.

17. In the afternoon of June 5, Army "Flying Fortresses" attacked

WAR COMMUNIQUES enemy cruisers again and scored three direct hits upon one heavy cruiser.

On the return trip, one of these planes was lost; a second was forced down at sea 15 miles from Midway. All except one of the crew of the second plane were rescued. A local bad weather condition to the northwest of Midway hampered the search operations of our carrier planes which were seeking the enemy in that area. Throughout the night of June 5-6, our aircraft carriers steamed to the westward in pursuit of the enemy.

18. Early in the morning of June 6 a search by carrier aircraft discovered two groups of enemy ships, each containing cruisers and destroyers. Between 9:30 and 10:00 a.m., our carrier planes attacked one group which contained the heavy cruisers MIKUMA and MOGAMI and three destroyers. At least two bomb hits were scored on each cruiser. One of the destroyers was sunk. The attacks were carried on until 5:30 p.m. The MIKUMA was sunk shortly after noon. The MOGAMI was gutted and subsequently sunk.

Another enemy cruiser and a destroyer also were hit during these series of attacks.

19. It was during this afternoon (June 6) that the U. S. destroyer HAMMANN was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine. Most of her crew were rescued. The HAMMANN was the destroyer announced as lost in Admiral Nimitz' Communique No. 4 (June 7, 1942).

20. After June 6 repeated attempts were made to contact the remainder of the Japanese invasion fleet but without success. It was on June 9, while one of these searches was being carried out by a group of long-range

Army medium bombers under the command of Major General Clarence L. Tinker, U.S.A., that the plane carrying General Tinker was forced down at sea and lost.

21. The following is a recapitulation of the damage inflicted upon the enemy during the battle of Midway. (a) Pour Japanese aircraft carriers, the

were sunk. (b) Three battleships were damaged by bomb and torpedo hits, one severely. (c) Two heavy cruisers, the MOGAMI and the MIKUMA were sunk. Three others were damaged, one or two severely. (d) One light cruiser was damaged. (e) Three destroyers were sunk and several others were damaged by bombs. (f) At least three transports or auxiliary ships were damaged, and one or more sunk. (g) An estimated 275 Japanese aircraft were destroyed or lost at sea through a lack of flight decks on which to land. (h) Approximately 4,800 Japanese were killed or drowned.

22. Our total personnel losses were 92 officers and 215 enlisted men.

23. Our forces fought under the command of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S.N., Commander in Chief of the Paciflc Fleet. Other officers who held important commands during the battle were Lieutenant General Delos C. Emmons, U.S.A., Commanding General, Hawaiian Department; Major General W. W. Hale, U.S.A., Head of the Bombing Command of the Army Air Force in Hawaii and Brigadier

24. Among the officers who held important commands at the scene of the action were Major General C. L. Tinker, U.S.A., Commander of the Army Air Force in Hawaii. General Tinker was lost in action. Vice Admiral, then Rear Admiral P. J. Fletcher, U.S.N., Rear Admiral R. A. Spruance, U.S.N., Rear Admiral T. C. Kincaid, U.S.N., and Rear Admiral W. W. Smith, U.S.N., had commands at sea throughout the action. Captain C. T. Simard, U.S.N., had command of the Naval Air Station at Midway. Colonel Harold D. Shannon, U.S.M.C., was the Commanding Officer of Ground Troops at Midway, Lieutenant Colonel Ira L. Kimes, U.S.M.C, was the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Aircraft at Midway. Lieutenant Colonel W. C Sweeney, Jr., U.S.A., commanded a formation of heavy Army bombers.

25. The battle of Midway was a complex and wide-spread action involving a number of engagements lasting more than three days and nights. Even our active participants in the numerous attacks and counter-attacks are unable to give confidently an accurate account of the damage inflicted by any one group in the many individual and unified attacks of our Army, Navy, and Marine Corps personnel.

1. In early June, Japanese naval forces made a two-pronged thrust at our western-most possessions, Midway and the Aleutian chain. The presence in each attacking force of troop transports indicated that these attacks were aimed at capture and occupation. The thrust at Midway was made by approximately 80 ships including 4 carriers, at least 3 battleships, and a large number of cruisers, destroyers and transports.

A simultaneous thrust was made on the Aleutians employing a far smaller force of approximately 2 small carriers, 2 seaplane tenders, several cruisers and destroyers and from 4 to 6 transports. The size of the forces involved shows the attack on Midway to have been the primary objective.

2. The attack on Midway was repelled as described in Department Communique No. 97. A resume of operations in the Aleutian Islands to date is given in the following paragraphs.

3. The flrst attack on Dutch Harbor and Port Mears was made at about 6 A. M. on June 3rd, concurrently with the early stages of the Japanese attack on Midway. Five waves of three planes each, launched from carriers to the Southward of Dutch Harbor, participated in the 20-minute attack, which was concentrated on Dutch Harbor and the nearby Army Station at Port Mears.

4. Three U. S. destroyers, an Army transport, a minesweeper and a Coast Guard cutter were in the harbor, as well as an old station ship, the Northwestern, which had been beached and was used as barracks for contractors' personnel. The attack was not unexpected, and anti-aircraft crews, who

were at their battle stations, both aboard the ships and at the shore batteries, opened fire 5 minutes before the first bomb was dropped. To obtain maneuverability the ships present got underway, continuing their anti-aircraft fire. No ship was hit during the raid. Two of the attacking aircraft were shot down.

5. A few barracks and warehouses at Fort Mears and Dutch Harbor were bombed and set afire and a Navy patrol plane which was about to take off with official mail was strafed.

6. On June 4, Army bombers and Navy patrol planes located and attacked the enemy carriers which had launched the attacking planes. Several bomb and torpedo attacks were made but results could not be observed.

7. One enemy plane was shot down during the several reconnaissance flights which the Japanese made over the Dutch Harbor area following the initial raid.

8. About 5 P. M. on June 4, 18 carrier-based bombers and 16 fighters attacked the installations at Dutch Harbor and Fort Mears. This attack was made simultaneously with an attack on the Army post at Fort Glenn, about 70 miles west of Dutch Harbor on the island of Umnak, where nine enemy fighters strafed shore installations. Two of the attacking planes were shot down by Army pursuit planes and the remaining 7 withdrew without inflicting damage.

9. The alarm at Dutch Harbor and Fort Mears was sounded well in advance of the attack and the enemy was met with heavy anti-aircraft flre from ship and shore batteries. The station ship Northwestern was bombed and destroyed by flre. A warehouse and a few fuel oil tanks were hit and set aflre, and one empty aircraft hangar was hit.

10. Casualties amounted to approximately 44 military and Naval personnel killed and 49 wounded, and one civilian employee killed.

11. Since June 4, there have been no further attacks on Dutch Harbor, Fort Mears, Port Glenn or any other U. S. military installations in Alaska or the Aleutian Islands.

August, 1942 12. Our Naval patrol planes. Army bombers and submarines, under the unified command of the Navy, have conducted the following attacks on the enemy forces which have made landings in the westernmost island groups which include Attu and Kiska. (a) On 5 June, Army aircraft attacked an enemy cruiser with undetermined results. (b) On 11 June, a Naval patrol plane reported enemy forces in Kiska Harbor. During the night this force was attacked by patrol planes and Army bombers. Results were not observed. (c) On 12 June, enemy ships were observed at both Attu and Kiska, and about 20 tents and temporary structures were observed on the shore at Kiska. The enemy ships at Kiska were attacked by long range Army aircraft and hits were made on the ships in the harbor but the exact extent of the damage could not be determined. (d) Various bombing and reconnaissance missions against Kiska were conducted in the week from 12 to 18 June with no important results or major changes in the situation.

Weather prevented observation of Attu. (e) On 18 Jime, the ships in Kiska were bombed by Army aircraft, resulting in the sinking of one transport near the center of the harbor. (f) All operations from 21 Jime to 3 July have been covered by Navy Department Commimique No. 94. (g) On 4 July, U. S. submarines torpedoed three destroyers off Kiska, sinking two and leaving the third badly damaged. A third destroyer was sunk by a U. S. submarine off Agattu. (h) On 5 July, a U. S. submarine torpedoed and is believed to have sunk a fourth Japanese destroyer off Kiska. (i) On 6 July, Army aircraft dropped 56 bombs on the enemy shore installations at Kiska. (j) On 11 July, Army aircraft bombed an enemy cruiser in Kiska with undetermined results. (k) Since 11 July, there has been no material change in the general situation.

13. The military results of the Aleutian campaign to date are as follows: (a) The enemy inflicted minor damage to the Naval Station a t Dutch Harbor and the Army post at Fort Mears but did not seriously impair their military effectiveness. (b) The enemy has occupied the undefended islands of Attu, Kiska and Agattu in the westernmost tip of the Aleutian chain and has constructed temporary living facilities ashore. (c) At least seven enemy aircraft have been destroyed and our pilots' reports indicate damage and possible destruction of several others. A number of our aircraft have been lost. (d) As previously reported, the following damage has been inflicted on the enemy naval forces since June 3: Sunk Damaged 3 destroyers 4 cruisers 1 transport 3 destroyers 1 gunboat 1 transport 14. Operations against the enemy in this area continue.

The Searchlight It doesn't happen often that the Army gives forth with an idea that the Navy rushes right in to follow, and when it does its newsworthy. This time its the wives here in Annapolis who have decided to follow the Army wives and organize an up-to-date address file for all wives of Naval and Marine officers.

A group of Army wives at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas started this for Army officer's wives calling themselves the "Locators," and the idea has met with great success.

Under the Women's Defense Activities, which acts for and as a clearing house for Navy wives interested in Defense courses and classes in Annapolis, a similar address file has been started and named "The Searchlight." With Armapolis the home port of the Navy, it seemed the logical place to organize such a file of particular interest to the Navy and Marine Corps wives.

FoUowing the recent evacuation of Navy and Marine families from all foreign stations and possessions, many friends have lost track of one another.

In many cases a Navy wife knew or heard that a friend had gone "home" for the duration and was living with her family, but has no idea of the "home" address.

Or as fias happened frequently in the past months one heard of an officer reported missing and wanted desperately to write to that officer's wife; a close friend. With no address and no way of obtaining it day after day went by with valued words of consolation to a friend unwritten.

The Searchlight will keep its files and clerical work will be done at the Community House, the former old Naval Academy golf house. Wives of Naval officers will act as a clerical force. A large list of addresses has already been obtained and Searchlight is filing more as rapidly as they can be gathered. The same clerical force will act as scouts when Searchlight does not have a desired address, by

asking others at every opportunity if they know of a particular Navy or Marine wife's whereabouts. Various Service publications, including Shipmate will publish a list of wanted addresses from time to time and anyone seeing their name so published may know that a friend is trying to reach them and should conrmunicate immediately with Searchlight.

Likewise a person seeing that an address is wanted, and knowing it, should write Searchlight. All files are confidential and no names or addresses will be furnished for any commercial purpose.

All Navy and Marine wives are urged to file their own addresses with Searchlight, Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., and to request any addresses they may need. The organizers of Searchlight hope that no wives will feel hesitancy about forwarding their own addresses; a close friend may pass through the home town unknowingly because she did not know a friend was living nearby or could not obtain the needed address.

In due time Searchlight hopes to have in its files and available to her friends the address of any officer's wife. Every effort will be made to furnish a requested address, and if its not immediately available the name will be kept in the wanted file, mentioned frequently by the scouts, and inquired about in correspondence with people living in other cities. Wives of retired officers who are reporting back for active duty are especially asked to forward their addresses, as they may have been living in inland cities and been out of touch with Navy friends.

It still has a job to do. If there is anything more nonchalant and matter-offact than a Navy man telling about his battle experiences, it ought to be patented, because it's unique.

Listen to these samples. They're direct quotes. ""I heard a loud noise and, turning around, saw a large hole in the hood of my plane, also two Jap Zeros on me about 200 yards astern. I pushed over in a steep dive, in which one Zero followed me, and descended to water level, trying to gain distance on the fighter, but the plane stayed with me. I stayed at water level with full throttle, gaining slowly until 1 decided the distance was great enough to turn on the Jap. We met head-on. I gave a long burst when we were about 300 yards apart, and his plane caught on fire and, out of control, dived in the water." ""We had been on the alert since before daylight. Then the alarm came and we

all got into the air. I went ahead after the leader of the division of bombers.

While making the first run, I got a bullet through the windshield, but continued my attack and shot down the division leader. Then I made an above side approach on the center plane of the formation, hit the leaders, and think I got one of them. Just then I got shot through the right knee and left leg. I kept going right down, got out of my dive, and remrned to Midway. I returned with great difficulty and attempted to make a landing, which ended in a ground loop as I had a flat tire and could not control the plane because of the wound in my leg."

""We released our bombs at 600 feet and made a hit on a cruiser. All four of our planes in this dive made hits. We returned at low altitude, under 100 feet.

We were unable to climb due to gunfire having crippled the controls." ""My engine stopped completely and I had given my rear seat man orders to brace himself. But when we were about 200 feet from the water, the engine caught and I was again able to fly for a few more minutes. This luck didn't last long, and I made my approach for a water landing a few minutes later. ""The ship stayed afloat for two or three minutes, during which time we were able to get some float lights out, a flare pistol and cartridges, and the first aid kit. After we had our boat inflated we found a hole about level with the water line, which we succeeded in patching to a certain extent. Nothing to do but bail the water out, which was done with a helmet.

"The first day we did not make contact with any planes, but sighted many. After a heluva night, due to the fact we were shipping water all the time, we heard the sound of an engine. A patrol boat was heading directly toward us. We succeeded in attracting his attention and he signaled that he was sending help, then went on with his mission.

After the diplomas were given out, the undergraduates gave the traditional cheer "for those about to leave us," and the graduates responded with a cheer "for those we leave behind." Then, tossing away their midshipmen caps, they marched quickly to Bancroft Hall to be administered their oaths.

Of the 611 men in the graduating class, 29 chose to enter the Marines as second lieutenant. Only four of the class failed to receive Navy or Marine commissions. Three of these received honorable discharge for physical reasons, and one, Ruben Paras Songoo, a Filipino, entered the Army as a second lieutenant.

The Graduates were given ten days' leave following graduation, which 180 of them used to take advantage of the special wartime permission to marry immediately following graduation. Most publicized wedding, which took place at the Academy Chapel immediately following the graduation ceremony, was that of Ensign W. E. Maxson, III, to Miss Mary Pauline Waltmor. Formerly the Regimental Commander, Maxson was the first member of a graduating class to marry on graduation day since 1932. The wedding party appears on the cover of this issue.

Thus, with a particularly significant Ring Dance on the evening of the 19th, ended June Week for the graduating class of 1943. Most of them will be already in the fleet as they read this—and to them, best wishes.

threaten our entire position in the Northern Pacific. They stand across our only route to Siberia and menace our naval base at Dutch Harbor, which they have already raided. A continuous stream of transports is strengthening their position.

They are obviously preparing for larger enterprises and, indeed, boast of them.

Delegate Anthony Dimond of Alaska asks if ""we are going to dawdle until the Japs take over the whole Aleutian chain."

Official reports stress the vile weather which handicaps our defense. The enemy uses the prevailing west-east storms as a screen to cover his encroachments. But the weather might have favored us if we had had the foresight to get there first.

Moreover, it is not a Japanese advantage we cannot overcome by resolute action.

The Western Aleutians are vital American territory. It would be folly to allow the Japanese to hold them. There is widespread dismay that they have been permitted to stay so long. The American people will not be satisfied until this Japanese adventure is liquidated to the last man and ship.

From the Washington Post, 7/6.— It is good news that Army and Navy Air Force Bombers operating from undisclosed bases in the Alaskan area have been hammering away at Japanese invasion forces in the Aleutians. The tendency, noticeable in some Washington quarters at first, to write off the occupation of Attu and Kiska islands as little more than a face-saving Japanese gesture has given way to a more realistic appreciation of the very real dangers involved in permitting the enemy to retain and develop the foothold he has obtained in the Aleutians.

W e should realize that the Navy and the Army Air Forces are working under grave handicaps. They are just as anxious to expel the Japanese from these two American islands as any of us, and they will do so when it is possible. Expressions of ill-timed and ill-informed impatience are of little aid to them in a task already sufficiently arduous.

From Our Navyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;With the Alaskan situation still obscure and with out own Navy Department more reticent than any other military service engaged in the war, even the Russians, it is impossible to say what the strategic results of the fighting in the north Pacific have been. Japanese sea-borne air strength has been badly cut down. This probably makes it impossible for them to deliver another really effective attack against Pearl Harbor or Midway, for although they have some carriers left undoubtedly, these are mostly of the converted type, rather slow and very vulnerable. But there is no evidence yet that they wish to drive home a heavy invasion in the Pearl Harbor area at the present time. Rather their indicated line of advance is along the Aleutians and down the coast. What is really needed on our part to render this impossible is the capacity for some type of counter-offensive action.

The first classmen for the coming academic year will be reassigned to new companies. This rearrangement has been adopted as the result of a recommendation submitted by the class which graduated this last June, and it was unanimously accepted by the Battalion officers.

The purpose of the change is to permit first classmen to become acquainted with a greater number of midshipmen.

They will also derive the same benefits obtained by routine shifts of officers in the fleet.

The local alumni group is very much thinned out, with more than half of the members back on active duty. To make shots tell, a citizen's committee has been formed, by the U. S. N. A. alumni, Adcraft Club, Navy League, Navy Relief, Board of Commerce, and Council of National Defense, as an official Navy aid organization for recruiting, officer procurement, morale, safety and traming.

There are more than 3,000 persons in the groups affiliated. This embraces manufacturers, newspapers, radio stations, civil defense, public works, utilities, transportation and air coordination.

The Michigan Navy-Citizens Committee formed December 8, 1941, has announced the seleaion of its officers for 1942-43, among whom are Lt. Commander Allan Rutter (Ret.), '11, chairman for officer procurement; R. B. Netting, '19, chairman for mercantile groups; R. G. Waldron, '19, chairman for Navy production plant liaison; D. C. Wilkerson, '20, general chairman.

This committee was formed to assist Lt. Commander Carson R. Miller, U. S. N., '21, Detroit recruiting officer, whose six month quota has since run consistently ahead of national average. It is composed of citizens who have been active in Navy Relief, Navy League, Adcraft Club and Council of National Defense work. The retiring chairman, Jerry Dumahaut, ex-Navy, will take over the program for deveoping Navy recruiting billboards in cooperation with advertisers all over Michigan.

Among the trustees are Harold Hastings, Secretary of Detroit's Adcraft Club, Bill Murray, Adcraft president and western representative for Fortune magazine, George Slocum, Navy League vice president and publisher of Automotive Daily News, Jean Shafer, a director of the Navy League and an official of the Bell Telephone, Ed Snyder, Detroit bank official and father of Ted Snyder, '44, Harry Shearer, secretary for both the Detroit Board of Commerce, and National Defense Council, and the general chairman.

The Navy-Citizens' group has sponsored a volunteer corps of Navy Anchorettes, girls in uniform who grace going-away parties, usher

at Navy Relief benefits, assist in Navy "E" award celebrations, take duty at recruiting stations, pass contribution cans at baseball games, dance with the boys on leave, and otherwise aid the Navy. These girls from 18 to 30, buy their own uniforms, take a formal oath of office, do not chew gum, smoke or dally with a cocktail glass while in uniform, and more than 50 are now daily aaive under "Commander" Priscilla Butterfield, known in national radio circles for special organization broadcasts originating in Detroit.

The committee built a Navy exhibit at Jefferson Beach, popular resort, in April, for use as a tropical recruiting station; is circulating a fine model show of the Two Ocean Navy; and obtained a real ship now put ashore in Campus Martius opposite Detroit's City Hall; the U. S. S. McKeever as a new recruiting station, carpentered to resemble a new Navy destroyer.

This group also has provided the publicity for all Navy Relief shows, and staged a Coral Sea memorial celebration on Belle Isle which attracted ten thousand people, one Sunday afternoon. It is now making plans for Navy Day (October 27) to bring Navy spirit in Michigan to white heat.

Commander Elmer Stoker, U. S. N., '20, is skipper of the Navy Training School, Dearborn, Michigan, Bex Trimble, '40, and G. D. Hilding, '21, are newcomers to the Alumni ranks in Michigan. Navy regulations forbid naming those who are back in service from civil life here, but of 47 active members as of January, 1941, only 25 still remain in civil life.

This committee has prepared an organization plan for the Michigan Naval Force (reserve) in collaboration with the U. S. Power Squadron, Sea Scouts, Propeller Club and International Regatta Association, which will tend to expand the manpower reserve for the Navy in this territory. This plan will probably go into efifea during September, 1942.

Our monthly dinner on Wednesday evening, July 1, proved equally as enjoyable as that of Wednesday evening, June 3; the tUtendance was grand; the subject of the after dinner talk was timely; and our guest speaker, Dr. Harold H. Fisher of Stanford University, told his story in a most interesting, personal, and informal sort of way.

Dr. Fisher is Professor of History at Stanford University and Vice-Chairman of the Hoover War Library. He had chosen as his subject, "Russia, Japan, The Aleutian Islands, and Alaska," and his observations were based upon a splendid background of valuable experience. As a Captain of the A.E.F. (19171919) he had served with the Field Artillery in the battle operations in France in 1918, and he took occasion to express appreciation to Admiral Yates Stirling who commanded the U.S.S. CONNECTICUT on Dr. Fisher's re-

turn from France in 1919. Later Dr. Fisher spent some time in Russia as Chief of the Division of Russia, American Relief Administration, 1922-23.

Following his formal talk along the lines of his chosen subjea. Dr. Fisher warmed to a number of questions on the current situation in Russia, and closed with a big hand for a very interesting analysis.

Commander Leo L. Lindley (1909) contributed some interesting points on the Pribiloff Islands.

Also, the writer took occasion to tell of a reprimand given to John E. Iseman (1908) as a Trans-Siberian passenger in the Spring of 1914. With the nine day train trip from Dairen to St. Petersburg, time was hanging quite heavy for all hands, and John E. offered to mix an American milk punch for the group of international travellers. John E.'s facilities were limited and the equipment was worse.

A dignified old Frenchman from Reims was greatly interested in all things American, and he watched the mixing operations with the greatest of attention. When John E. handed him his mug of the concoaion, the old Frenchman held it high in his left hand, very seriously crossed himself with his right hand, and took one sip. He gulped with a look of nausea on his face, and mumbled,â&#x20AC;&#x201D;"You spoil the egg; you spoil the milk; and YOU SPOIL THE COGNAC" Among our service guests were Major General W. P. Upshur, U.S.M.C; Captain W. R. Carter (1908); Captain C. H. Cobb (1911); Captain E. L. Woodside (1913); Lt. Colonel E. E. (Swede) Larson (1922) and others.

And among our civilian friends were Godfrey A. Fisher, British Consul General; Mr. Fernando Berckemeyer, Peruvian Consul General; Dr. Enrique Laroza, Head of Peruvian Technical Schools, in the United States as a guest of our State Department; and L. C. Roster, Vice-President of the San Francisco Bank.

Our next dinner is scheduled for 6.30 p.m.

Wednesday, August 5th, at the Army-Navy Club, Hotel Fairmont, and we are endeavoring to get Professor Raymond J. Sontag of the University of California to speak upon the subject "Can We Keep Germany Down?"
