America Is A Battlefield

By Frank Knox Secretary of the Navy America today is a peaceful sector of a battle field that extends to every corner of the earth. We hope and intend that this American sector shall remain free from substantial attack by the enemy. Our Commander-in-Chief has said ""We must keep the enemy from our shores—for we intend to bring this battle to him on his home ground."

To that end, we have pledged everything we have. To that purpose, we have resolved to bend all our mighty energies —industrial, military and naval. We are a mighty people with a single purpose and until that purpose is achieved, we shall know no other purpose.

W e will bring the battle to our enemy on his home grounds with the inflexible purpose of a people slow to wrath who have made a dread and final decision from which there is no turning back. We will take the battle to him— the battle for truth and justice and righteousness with God's help and with the inexorable certainty of God's own judgment.

We are now united. Pearl Harbor did that. Never before in any war in our history have we entered upon the contest with anything even approaching our present national unity.

But there will be dark days—days we must prepare to face with patience and understanding. The history of tyranny is much longer than the history of freedom and the Axis tyrants' power is ruthless and great. The Navy has taken some hard blows. It has taken them in the opening round, when our opponent—paying us the conscious tribute of resort to treachery—chose to start fighting before the referee's bell had rung. Indeed, he chose to start fighting while his devious seconds were still in Washington, telling us that they did not want to go into the ring at all. But all that, however, is now part of the long history of ruthless tyranny. And there will be other reverses. Perhaps many of them before the tides of war shift, as shift they will, to our side in this contest.

As I reported to the nation after going myself to see what had happened in Hawaii, and how it had happened, and why it had happened, our losses at Pearl Harbor were severe. The President's

Committee, headed by Mr. Justice Roberts of the Supreme Court, is now in the Islands preparing a full report—pending which it would be improper for me to say more.

I would not be frank, however, if I led you who read this to believe that you could expect favorable, dramatic developments of triumphant American, fullscale naval engagements in the Pacific in the near future. The elements of distance, of time, and the necessarily wide distribution of naval forces preclude what I know you all wish me to suggest: early conclusive showdown with the Japanese Navy. But by this I do not mean to imply that the Pacific Fleet is idle. It is not idle and you will hear from it again and again; when and where careful strategic considerations dictate.

But I must repeat again that in this day-—when we are all prone to think of distances in terms of the speed of planes —distances still present very difficult problems to ocean-going vessels, to our battleships, to our destroyers and cruisers, to our submarines.

Neither would I be candid if I did not at least remind you of the manifold responsibilities of the Navy. For this is not only war in the far East—this is war everywhere, in all the seas, global war!

The Navy's task is enormous and unprecedented. There is fighting to do, but there are also our long, long coasts to guard, our far flung bases and outposts and the Panama Canal to protect. And then there are the endless lines of ships crawling over the waters of the earth-Tin the North Atlantic, in the South Atlantic, in the North Pacific, in the South Pacific—carrying to us the numberless things we need for life and war and carrying away the numberless things our friends need, everywhere—our friends embattled with the common foe. These supply lines, these myriads of ships crawling to and fro across the face of the earth must all be protected.

It is not easy to grasp the full immensity of a task like that. To put it in its simplest terms—and the terms are not simple—our task—the task of the navies of the United States and Britain—is to have effective fighting strength in all the seas, all the oceans.

That's the job we have to do. And it is fair to tell you that your Navy is doing it—the great highway of the sea between America and Britain is open! We must not forget that the most powerful of our enemies has for months been using all the power and ingenuity at his command to cut that highway. But, thanks to the Navy on the sea, and in the air, he has failed to do so—and the British bulwark grows stronger day by day. The full record of the Navy in the battle for the Atlantic cannot yet be told. To do so would be to give Hitler details of our successful operations he would gladly lose another BISMARCK to know.

Nor can we be unmindful of the work being done by the Navy's patrols operating from our ocean bases that hold this continent's security in parentheses of steel. These are some of our tasks that must not be neglected the while we prepare to seek and drive the enemy from the sea.

We know who our great enemy is.

The enemy who, before all others, must be defeated first. It is not Japan, it is not Italy. It is Hitler and Hitler's Nazis, Hitler's Germany. It is Hitler we must destroy. That donS, the whole Axis fabric will collapse. The finishing oflf of Hitler's satellites will be easy by contrast.

Japan, like Italy, is just the tool of Hitler.

Just as Italy was employed in an effort to frighten Britain into compromise when France fell, so Japan became the useful utensil of Hitler, who sought, through this use of Japan, to divert our productive capacity from Britain and Russia, to our own use, and thus halt the threat that this aid of ours, to those two lighting nations, was to his program for a European conquest.

Never in modern history has a nation so obviously committed national suicide than when Japan was persuaded

by Germany to simultaneously begin war upon the American and British peoples, the two peoples possessed of the greatest potential power to make war in all the world. Neither the British Empire, not the American Republic, go to war easily.

For them, it is always a last resort and, likewise, when once embarked in war, they both have a habit of winning their wars. This one will be no exception!

W e not only know who our principal enemy is, but we appreciate to its fullest proportions the task that lies ahead. We know that our enemies possess the greatest military machine that man's ingenuity has created. W e know they have a great air fleet and the capacity for adding to its strength swiftly. W e know that, in the far Western Pacific, they possess a seapower of no insignificant proportions, and we also know that, having all these things, they will stop at the use of no means to achieve their ends; that a part of their arsenal are the weapons of corruption and treachery. W e know they will stop at nothing, and because we know all these things, and estimate to the full their weight, we know it will take a long time, that it will call for infinite patience, that it will demand dogged resolution to drive through these obstacles to our objective—complete victory.

In the past year, we have made long strides in the task of creating an arsenal of democracy here in America. W e have done this despite the handicaps, and the delays, and the disappointments, that flowed from our halfway status of half-in, and half-out of war.

Great credit is due to those men upon whom responsibilities have been placed —men who worked day and night for the defense of the nation against the hour of peril, which they saw clearly approaching, and who gave of their uttermost to produce the weapons to defend the nation, and who sought by every means in their power to arouse the nation to its perils.

Now, that is all over. Now we know— and, knowing all, we are united. Nonrigid Airship Patrol Squadron Commissioned Marking the beginning of realization of nonrigid airship portion of the naval aeronautical expansion, with appropriate yet simple official ceremonies at the Naval Air Station at Lakehurst, N. J., on January 2, 1942, Rear Admiral Adolphus Andrews, U. S. N. Commander North Atlantic Naval Coastal Frontier, placed in commission the first of a number of airship patrol squadrons which will constitute one element in our naval coastal defense forces. Moderatesized nonrigid airships of the patrol type will make up these squadrons.

Such nonrigid airships or blimps are considered valuable for escort and general coastal work especially against submarines and mines. The blimps are armed with depth bombs and guns.

Commander George H. Mills, U. S. N., until this occasion the Commanding Officer of the Lakehurst Naval Air Station, became the Commander of the first Airship Group established in this new organization, and is succeeded in command at Lakehurst by Commander Fred C. Sachse, U. S. N., previously the Executive officer of that station.

Lieutenant Commander Raymond F. Tyler, U. S. N., one of the Navy's most experienced veteran lighter-than-air officers becomes the first Commander of the

newly organized Airship Squadron.

Other officers and men for this unit were drawn not only from a group of the Navy's veterans of blimp and large airship experience but also from later classes of students who have been undergoing training at Lakehurst, the hub of the airship program.

It is expected that Lieutenant Commander George F. Watson, U. S. N., well known as the Public Relations Officer at Lakehurst on the occasion of the loss of the Hindenburg and numerous other important occasions, will become the first commander of another Airship Squadron soon to be commissioned.,

Goveriunent Life Insurance Members of the naval service on active duty who desire National Service Life Insurance may now apply for it without medical examination. The time limit is 120 days from December 20, 1941.

Ten thousand dollars is the maximum of such insurance that may be carried.

If one has but part of that amount in effect and desires to increase it to the full ten thousand, he may do so. Allotments to cover payment of premium for December or January will be accepted when mailed or placed in official channels during those months even though received after the end of those months.

Applications for National Service Life Insurance should be submitted on Form 350. However, the United States Veterans' Bureau has advised the Navy Department that any statement in writing signed by the identifying the applicant and showing amounts of insurance desired, if accompanied by remittance or authorization for deduction of pay covering the first premium, will be considered.

The extension of time for application for National Service Life Insurance was made possible by amendment of the law December 20, 1941.

Seal of the Naval Academy

By High Tyde The familiar words "Ex Scientia Tridens" on the seal, or coat of arms of the United States Naval Academy, are as close to a Naval officer as the gold anchors upon his uniform. Familiar too, are the hand grasping a trident below which is a shield bearing an ancient galley coming into action, bows on, and under that an open book indicative of education, and finally the motto meaning ""from knowledge, sea power."

The first known seal of the Naval Academy might not be recognized by the most venerable Naval man, which consisted of the old conventional naval insignia of the figure of Liberty seateid by a shield of stars and stripes, an anchor, cannonballs, cannon, sextant, a pair of dividers, a compass, a ship, and an eagle close by a globe on which Liberty is resting her hand. What it didn't have was a motto. The circular design is stamped in gold on the front cover of Marshall's "History of the U. S. Naval Academy," which was published in 1862, and an edition of Simpson's "Treatise on Ordnance and Gunnery" published in 1871.

There may have been other seals of the Academy but for one other they as yet are undiscovered. The second seal is that used on the cover of Cooke's "Textbook of Naval Ordnance and Gunnery" second edition, 1880, which consisted of a circle of rope enclosing a monogram of the initials U.S.N.A., the whole mounted upon, the intersection of two crossed cannon.

The events leading up to the origin of the coat of arms that was adopted by the Navy Department in 1899 are explained by the designer. Park Benjamin of the class of 1867, in a letter written to the librarian at the Naval Academy Library, dated May 18, 1913- The letter was written on University Club stationery—the club that was responsible for the origin of the insignia.

In part the letter reads: "The circumstances of the origin of the seal are as follows: the University Club of New York City, having provided for the erection of a new house on Fifth Avenue, determined after the plans were accepted, that the exterior was rather plain and conceived the idea of embellishing it with the coats of arms or seals of the American colleges. stars and stripes design was on the cover of the Academy Register, the architects assumed that this was the officially sanctioned seal, and adopted it. ""I knew nothing of this until I saw the thing actually being cut on the building, and nearly completed. I thereupon called

the attention of other graduates of the Academy, who were members of the club, to the fact that not only had that design never been chosen or authorized, but that the existing regulations of the Navy Department, bureaus, or subordinate branches were prohibited from assuming any emblem other than the well known heraldic spread eagle with the name of the bureau or branch affixed.

"An inquiry was started to find out how the Register design had come into existence with the result that it was discovered that the printer of the first pamphlet on which it appeared, being troubled by a rather blank space on the cover below the title, adopted the ancient expedient of putting in something to hold up the paper while in the press, and instead of choosing some conventional scroll or like ornament, evolved the stripes and anchor. ""The work of the stone cutters was stopped and at a meeting of the graduate members, I was asked to design something and submit it for consideration.

The preliminary discussions showed that there was some difference of opinion as for the proper character of the seal, one party favoring a conventional arrangement of guns, anchors, etc. and a purely

patriotic motto, and another strongly advocating a departure from that idea and emphasizing the scholastic side of the matter.

"I made two designs, one of the conventional type, the other the present seal.

At quite a large meeting of the graduates, both in and out of the service held at the Club house, both designs were considered and the present seal was chosen by an overwhelming majority. ""Meanwhile, we had learned that West Point was in a similar difficulty. The architect had again assumed that the engineers cast was the correct emblem of the Military Academy and had provided for its use. The infantry, cavalry and artillery people promptly protested and denied that the engineers were the ""whole thing." That was several months before the matter of our seal came up. Finally, a compromise design was devised and Submitted to the War Department, only to get entangled in a mesh of red tape.

Whatever it was, we understood it was blocked and thereupon Professor Charles W. Larned's conception was originated and found favor with the powers in Washington. ". . . We did not in the first instance send the chosen design to the Navy Department but adopted it ourselves as the seal of an alumni association which we had organized not long before. Then we sent the drawing to Washington with the suggestion that in as much as the Academy had no seal it might take that with the result that on January 25, 1899 it was adopted as the seal for the Naval Academy. ""You will see that therefore while it is quite true that I, and I only, am guilty of perpetuating the existing seal and motto, I had accomplices and ought to be acquitted of the recent charge of doing it single handed. '"The original design had no torches or other supporters. The torches were put on by the architects and they certainly do appear on the photograph of the architects' sketch which was sent to the Navy Department. The reason why the square form came in active use was due to Robert W. Thompson who had a die made for letter paper printing and that die he gave to Admiral McNair who proceeded to utilize it. I objected at the time. Some

years later I received a letter from the then Superintendent, I have forgotten who it was, asking for a correct representation of the seal. As meanwhile everyone seemed to like the torches, I had the design re-arranged and in that way it took the form which appeared first on the cover of my book (United States Naval Academy). *"I have not been able to find any evidence that the Marshall design was officially used, like that in Cooke's book, and probably the many others which were printed on ball invitations and the like appears to have been merely occasional.

"The West Point seal has always seemed to me not particularly happy. The Naval officers, like Caesar's wife, is absolutely above suspicion in the matter of Duty, Honor, Coimtry and doesn't need either to remind himself or his countrymen of that fact by putting it on his badge. Besides, while that sort of motto might be well enough for the Army as a whole, or the Revenue service or the Patent Office for that matter, I cannot for the life of me see how it particularly applies to a training school. Is that the only place where the implied devotion is supposed to exist—^within the orbit of the U. S. Army?

"Moreover, the West Point device is an old Naval design; it is the particular thing—^helmet with sword through it, which was placed on all gangway boards of the French line of battleships during the classic revival of the Empire days . . . " The Army and Navy Journal of February 4, 1899 states that the designer's idea in producing the Naval Academy seal was to bring it into harmony with the general charaaer of the emblems of other institutions of learning, thus giving it a classic form while still emphasizing both its naval and academic feamres. For this reason it was thought better to avoid the ordinary naval designs, such as eagles, anchors, flags, guns, rope, etc. commonly employed on buttons and other official badges. The trident, the ancient symbol of sea power, is made prominent in the crest. The motto is indicative of the purpose of the Naval Academy, which exists in order to educate the men by whom that power is directly wielded. The scholastic idea is indicated by the open book.

of the numerous things to be expected as a matter of course of Naval Academy graduates." Another inquisitive person asked what book was meant by the open volume on the shield, when it was remarked by the same writer that "like Sam Weller's spelling, this depends upon the 'taste and fancy' of the observer, but if any particular book is to be associated hereafter with the representation, it seems that it might well be Luce's "Seamanship," not so much in memory of the work, which will last as long as naval officers are sailors, as of its author to whom the Naval Academy is so greatly indebted, and whom so many of its graduates remember with reverence and affection."

However, there were those who criticized the seal and its author, with remarks made by Lieut. Ridgely Hunt (Ret.) to the effect that the seal '"represents the unformnate effort of one man, a graduate in civil life, who, singlehanded in 1898, conceived the design and aided by a classmate had it adopted by the Navy Department." It was in answer to this letter and to a later printed article that Mr. Benjamin addressed his remarks in the above quoted letter, which is now in the Naval Academy Library.

Lieutenant Hunt objected to the galley and the book emblazoned on the escutcheon of his school. He quoted the remarks of another party that the galley was seleaed because it was a vessel "manned by slaves chained to oars," and recalls the remark of some acid minded person that ""2.5 should be imposed on one page of the open book and a mathematical symbol on the other."

He also announced that he thought the motto ""Ex scientia tridens" not only was difficult to translate but that the concept embodied therein could hardly give birth to that greater idea—conducive to the proper esprit de corps—of allegiance to country.

For nearly thirty years, from 1874 to 1900, the title pages of the official registers of the Academy bore the design of a field of diagonal stripes, surrounded by stars and bearing a foul anchor. The devices of the Naval Academy Library, the Naval Academy Graduates Association and the Naval Institute are similar to the above design except for the seal of the Naval Instimte which has a sword crossed over a quill pen, with the same Secretary of the Navy Long was supbroad diagonal stripes surrounded by posed to have asked from where the stars. motto "Ex scientia tridens" came. Here is the letter, written by Ensign John Brodhead, Jr., USNR, on duty at the U. S. Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, to his mother, Mrs. John Brodhead, Sr., St. Louis, Missouri.

"Dear Mom: •"Received your letter today, dear, and I want to sit down and answer it immediately, because I think it represents not only your voice but that of all mothers in this country. ""Mom, you went through a lot of hell raising Bill and myself, and I know you love us a great deal, but do not torture yourself with the things that can happen to us in this war. I realize it is easy for me to say this, but if you will think instead that your sons are not unhappy, but on the other hand more than a little proud that they can do their bit to fight for something that is pretty real; then I think it will be a lighter load for you to carry.

"I remember as a small boy that I used to look back enviously into the past, wishing that I had been born when there were dragons to conquer and unconquered lands over the horizon; it used to irritate me to think of the quiet times in which we were living, but we have all got our crusade now and no man ever had the chance to jouse into a better one and what greater justification can one find in a life than fighting for an ideal — any worthwhile life is spent in a search or a fight for a truth or an ideal; the only bearable factor is the form that this fight happens to take. ""Now this war is a job for both generations—ours to prosecute from the active end and yours to be the productive and stabilizing agent and it belongs to the mothers in particular to imbue us all with their bravery and unselfish love.

Your example can be the most damaging blow the Axis will ever suffer—your love will have to be by loving and strengthening. It violates its purpose if instead it tends to enervate. I shall not mention this again. ""Everything here is very quiet, but very quiet in a determined way.

Spindrift

The glorious fourteen days of Christmas leave are over and the regiment of midshipmen is back to school again. The Executive Department started the ball rolling by having the men move to their new rooms as soon as they signed in on January 3rd. Some of the Youngsters had to move from the fourth deck of the Fourth Battalion to the second and third decks of the Second Battalion, and this seemed to be quite a laborious task for the sleepy-eyed men who had probably been up the whole night before. These Youngsters were shifted from the Fourth Battalion to the Second Battalion in order to make room for the Reserve midshipmen. The new set of stripers took over the regiment the same day at the first formation of the Winter term. The five striper is W. E. Maxon, 3rd, a man whom we all remember because of his good work on the football team last year.

Adding to the gloom of returning from leave is the warlike atmosphere of the Naval Academy these days. No longer do we hear the click of cameras and see the smiling faces of visitors. Instead, we hear the clang of gates and the click' of doors being locked at seven o'clock each evening, and see the solemn faces of the armed sentries who patrol their posts in Bancroft Hall to guard against possible sabotage. Midshipmen who are in the habit of "frenching out" will have to be especially careful that they don't get shot when they hop over the wall these wintry nights.

As protection against air raids, the windows of Bancroft Hall are being fitted with black-out shades. Upon return from class one day last week, we found workmen measuring windows to get the proper size for these new shades.

This is the first Academic year that fourth classmen have stood mate-of-thedeck watches. In order that the third classmen will not have too many watches to stand, plebes have taken over all of the mate-of-the-deck watches, and the Youngsters are standing the security detail watches. The security detail is a

The Masqueraders are now working on the play, "Mr. and Mrs. North," which they plan to give on February twentyseventh. There will also be performances on February twenty-eighth, and March sixth and seventh. We hear that they have some good talent this year, so their show will probably be one of the highlights of the entertainment program

In closing, we might add that all midshipmen are doing their share towards helping the Navy Relief Society by saving tinfoil from candy bars and cigarette packages, and depositing it in boxes in front of each battalion office.

Well, we have only ten minutes until evening meal formation, and as we have to render this article to the editor tomorrow, we had better close for this issue.

Professor William Eugene Olivet Retires

In 1903, when the foundation of Bancroft Hall was just being laid and Old Fort Severn was used as a gymnasium, a young man named William Eugene Olivet joined the faculty at the United States Naval Academy in the Department of Modern Languages. On June 30,1941, Professor Olivet ended 38 years of service at the Academy and is now retired with the distinction of having served and taught the greatest number of years of any professor at the instimtion.

Professor Olivet, who was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1876, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Olivet. He attended schools in Geneva and Lausanne and in 1888 went with his parents to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his father became president of the Bahia Blanca Bank. He is the grandson of Dr. Mark Olivet, who was dean of a Geneva hospital, professor at the University of Geneva and a member of the City Council.

In 1896, Olivet came to this country where he taught for seven years in language schools in New York, Boston and Washington, D. C At the time of his appointment to the Academy he was principal of a Baltimore school of languages, and was 27 years of age.

When commencing his work at the Academy, Olivet was an instructor in Spanish, but in 1919 he was made associate professor and in 1927 .a full professor. Besides classes in Spanish, he had classes in French but gave more attention to the former.

From the time of his appointment to the Academy, Professor Olivet continued his stodies at various colleges, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. John's College and the University of Maryland in 1919. He later received his Master of Arts degree from St. John's and had the degree of Doctor of Letters conferred upon him. He is a candidate for a PhD. degree from Johns Hopkins University.

In the trophy filled library of his home on Duke of Gloucester street, which was built 29 years ago. Professor Olivet and his wife related many interesting details of the early days at the Academy. The entering class of 1903, he recalled, was the first large class to graduate but was divided into three periods, the class of September 1906, the class of February 1907 and of June 1907, with 209 graduates in all. The enlargement of the Academy was underway at this time, due to the large appropriation by Congress.

At the time Farragut Field was reclaimed from the Bay, Professor Olivet remembered that remnants of the burned Peggy Stewart tea ship were found at the present location of MacDonough Hall.

Uniforms worn by the midshipmen have gone through several transformations, but he also recollected that hooks and eyes were used to fasten the middies' coats that were made with a high closefitting collar and a wide row of dark braid down the center front, on either side of the fastening.

During his long years of service. Professor Olivet taught not only midshipmen who now command units of the fleet as Captains or fly the flag of an admiral, but also many of their sons who are also on duty in the United States Navy.

Professor Olivet has a large and excellent collection of books in his library which he started upon preparation of a thesis on the Greek, Norman, Latin and Old French sources of La Fontaine's fables. Several of the books were printed in 1500, 1600 and 1700 and still have their original parchment binding. The collection includes fables, short stories and exempla in many languages.

Outside his work at the Academy, Pro-

fessor Olivet has been active in extra curricular work as well. Near the end of the World War I, he had charge of a French Class under the auspices of the Calvary Methodist Church, in 1917-18; taught two classes also in French at St. John's College. He was vice president several terms and teacher for many years of the Men's Bible Class of the Calvary Methodist Church, of which he is a member and is now secretary of the Official Board, which post he has held for the past 16 years.

He has frequently delivered talks and lecmres on Old Testament characters.

Genesis, the Mexican and Yucatan pyramids and prehistoric civilizations in America, and has written numerous articles on lectures given by speakers to the Men's Bible Class. He is considered a student of the Bible.

In his spare time. Professor Olivet took parts in French and Spanish comedies presented by the Naval Academy Language Clubs, as well as in Musical Comedies given by church groups.

Of his work at the Academy, he said: ""I consider the Naval Academy the leading instimtion of the Nation from the standpoint of the intensive course of training covered by the midshipmen.

Nothing could be more inspiring than seeing year after year many midshipmen emerging from their course in Languages as fluent linguists. The memory of happy hours in the class-room and the cordial relations with officers and instructors during these many years will never be forgotten."

An inscribed silver plaque was presented to Professor Olivet on May 28 by the Department of Foreign Languages, preceding his retirement, at a reception in his honor at the Naval Academy Officers' Club.

The Olivets have one daughter, Francine, who is the wife of Lieut. Comdr.

Alvord J. Greenacre, U.S.N. There are three grandchildren.

Professor and Mrs. Olivet will continue to make their home in Annapolis which, he says, has developed in recent years into one of the finest residential communities in the country.

Dosh Peshetas Capt. John M. Ellicott, '83, USN (Ret.) In 1892 the USS BENNINGTON was wintering in Cadiz awaiting the completion of the replicas of Columbus' caravels which were to be towed to America and exhibited at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Our only pastime ashore was to play roulette at the Casino Gadetano, the swank men's club. There we played for months almost every afternoon when off duty and occasionally in the evening, although evening shore leave was made difficult by the necessity for hiring boats between ship and shore. Our captain allowed no boats for us after nightfall but went ashore almost nightly in his gig accompanied by a boon companion who spoke excellent Spanish.

The most inveterate player among the dub members was a fine old gentleman with an impediment in his speech which made him pronounce s as sh. He always staked two pesetas (about 50 cents) at a time and he called them dosh peshetas, so finally we nicknamed him Dosh Peshetas. He played incessantly afternoon and evening and was the most continuous loser I ever saw. As the time neared for our departure we figured that he must have lost nearly ten thousand dollars. He showed it, too, for he had grown haggard and unkempt. Two afternoons before we were scheduled to sail we found him, as usual, in the game room. After a few losses his dosh peshetas won on single number 23 and he left his winnings on it. Again 23 was the winning ntunber and again, changing his silver into script, he left it all on that number for a third time. By then nearly all his friends had stopped to watch, and for the third time the ball rolled into 23.

Then some one said, as I understood it, "You shouldn't turn your back on Lady Luck while she is smiling upon you."

Dosh Peshetas hesitated, then shook his head, but as the wheel began to spin he shrugged.

"Como no," he exclaimed. ""Dosh peshetas," and placed two silver pieces on 23.

It was a long spin before the ball faltered and came to rest.

"Veinte tres, rubio," droned the croupier.

Dosh Peshetas collapsed into the nearest chair and called faintly for brandy. ""My God!" exclaimed Ensign Harry Phelps, a lightning calculator, He's missed eight hundred thousand dollars!"

W e took the story back to the ship and told it to the mess at dinner. Then Phelps, who had a very keen eye, declared he had noticed that the roulette wheel spindle was slightly out of vertical, inclining the wheel toward the number 23 and its adjacent numbers. W e got so excited about it that it was agreed I, being mess caterer, should take our undistributed profits in mess money and, with Phelps, should go ashore next day, our last in port, and gamble it on the sector around 23, a few doubting Thomases remarking that we had better win, or else!

But when we reached the game room it was vacant. We lifted a cloth over the table and found it was a billiard table.

W e went into the reading room and found Dosh Peshetas reading an illustrated weekly. W e nonchalantly ad-

dressed him and spoke of the formne he so nearly won the day before. ""Ah," he said, "but they could not have paid all that. The pay off ceiling is much lower, but ah, Ustedes, had I not lost my nerve I would have broken the bank." ""But what about the game today?" we asked.

"Ah," he answered, "after yesterday's experience they decided to dismantle the table for renovation."

When we returned to the ship and told our tale of frustration I'm sure the doubting Thomases thought we were alibiing in a case of cold feet.

Army Air Force Chief Lauds Marines On Wake Island Lieutenant General H. H. Arnold, Chief of the Army Air Force, declared in a letter received today by Major General Thomas Holcomb, Commandant of the Marine Corps, that "the bravery and ingenuity" of the Marine defenders of Wake Island set an example ""for all members of the Armed Forces of the United States to strive to emulate."

Asserting that he based his letter on a report which Rear Admiral John H. Towers, U.S.N., Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, had sent to him for purposes of information. General Arnold said: "Admiral Towers has sent me a most interesting and inspiring report on the activities of the small group of Marine officers and ratings (enlisted men) in the gallant defense of Wake Island. "'This report is the first official or semiofficial account I have received of just what happened on Wake Island and I am most impressed with the magnificent work done. ""The bravery and ingenuity described in this report are in keeping with the splendid records of the Marine Corps and I feel warrant inscriptions on a very bright page of those records for all members of the Armed Forces of the United States to strive to emulate. ""The memory of those who fell will always occupy a prominent spot in the history of our country and add to the past records of the Marine Corps."

After waiting in the cold for some time, Buchcosky discovered he was at the wrong place and headed for the Recruiting Station at 63 Vesey Street. He paused at a street corner a few blocks from the Receiving Station to check his directions with a uniformed bluejacket of the Navy, seated at the wheel of a large black car which had halted for a traffic light.

A man in the rear of the car, overhearing the inquiry, opened the door and said: ""Jump in son, we'll take you there."

The man was Rear Admiral Adolphus Andrews, '01, U.S.N., Commandant of the Third Naval District, and Commander North Atlantic Naval Coastal Frontier, who was en route to his headquarters at 90 Church Street.

Delivered to the Recruiting Station in jig time, Buchcosky found himself at the head of the line. He was examined, his credential and parents' consent verified and at 12:52 p.m., Buchcosky, an apprentice seaman in the Navy, was on his way to the Naval Training Station, Newport, Rhode Island.

The school, only one of its kind in existence, is located on the top floor of the State-Lake building, 190 North State Street, Chicago. The course will require approximately two months, and the Navy expects each class to number about 100 men.

Retired because of deafness. Lieutenant Eddy sought some way to help his country in its present crisis. He offered his services as administrator of the new school, and the Navy gladly accepted the gift of Eddy's inventive genius. He is one of the top-ranking television oxperts in the country, and several of his inventions in the field of sound amplifying and radio transmission are standard equipment in U. S. submarines. Lieutenant Eddy currently is employed as television director of W9XBK.

The Navy Department announces that instructions have been issued that the remains of Naval personnel, including Coast Guard and Marine Corps, lost in action be interred temporarily in the localities in which they lost their lives.

This procedure is necessitated by the diflSculties of ocean transport in war. They will be buried with full military honors.

The Navy Department announced that it is unable to communicate with Guam either by radio or cable. The capmre of the island is probable. A small force of less than 400 naval personnel and 155 marines were stationed in Guam. According to the last reports from Guam, the island had been bombed repeatedly and Japanese troops had landed at several points on the island.

Wake and Midway continue to resist.

December 11, 1941.

COMMUNIQUE N O . 2

The Marine Garrison on Wake Island has been subject to four separate attacks in the last 48 hours by enemy aircraft and one by light Naval Units. Despite the loss of part of the defending planes and the damage to material and personnel, the defending garrison succeeded in sinking one light cruiser and one destroyer of the enemy forces by air action. A resumption of the attack and a probable landing attempt is expected. The Marine Garrison is continuing to resist. The above report is based on information received up until noon December 11,

COMMUNIQUE N O . 6

U. S. airmen mrned back the fishing vessel ALERT of U. S. Registry in the Gulf of Nicoya, on the West Coast of Costa Rica. The vessel was boarded on its remrn to port and was found to have seven Japanese in the crew. They were taken into custody. The ALERT was loaded with a cargo of 10,000 gallons of Diesel oil.

COMMUNIQUE N O . 3

The Navy Department announced that Admiral Thomas C. Hart, U. S. Navy, Commander-in-Chief, United States Asiatic Fleet, has reported that Navy patrol planes scored bomb hits on a Japanese battleship of the KONGO class off the coast of Luzon. The ship was badly damaged. This is the second Japanese battleship to be bombed effectively by United States forces.

December 12, 1941.

Naval forces continue to coordinate their efforts with the Army on land, sea and in the air against heavy Japanese attacks on the Island of Luzon. There is no confirmation of the alleged occupation of Guam by the Japanese. The resistance of Wake and Midway continues. N o further air activity over Hawaii has been reported. The simation in the Atlantic remains unchanged.

A Norwegian motor ship was sunk while approaching the Hawaiian Isles. The crew was rescued by Naval Vessels. The Hawaiian Area has otherwise been without accident.

Recent enemy bombing in the Philippines theatre has resulted in no damage to naval installations or ship. Heavy

weather in the North Atlantic hampers Naval operations there.

Midway and Wake Islands continue to resist.

Two islands in the Hawaiian area have been shelled by Japanese war vessels within the last twenty-four hours. The Naval outpost of Johnston Island figured for the first time in Pacific action. It was bombarded by ships of the enemy at dusk. On the northeastern coast of the Island of Maui, the shipping center of Kahului was shelled by an enemy submarine at about the same time. Damage in both instances is believed to be slight. Naval operations are continuing against the enemy.

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the Naval simation as of noon today: Atlantic Theater There are indications of enemy submarine activity oflf the East Coast of the United States.

Eastern Pacific Enemy submarines have been active along the West Coast of the United States. The S.S. AGWI WORLD was shelled by an

enemy submarine.

The S. S. EMIDIO was also shelled and then torpedoed. The crew abandoned ship and took to the lifeboats. Three lifeboats were destroyed by submarine gunfire. Thirty-two survivors have been rescued. There were fifty-four in the crew.

Central Pacific Wake Island has sustained two additional attacks by enemy aircraft.

Far East The enemy made a light air attack on Cavite. Only slight damage resulted.

December 22, 1941.

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the Naval simation as of noon (EST) today: Atlantic Theater There are no new developments to report.

Eastern Pacific The S. S. SAMOA was attacked by an unknown submarine ofiF the coast of California during the night of December 20.

The attack was made at close range, and consisted of gun fire followed by the discharge of a torpedo. All shots missed their mark. The torpedo exploded in the vicinity of the ship.

There were no casualties or damage to the SAMOA. Central Pacific Thirty survivors of the S. S. LAHAINA have landed at Kahului on the Island of Maui. The LAHAINA was shelled and sunk by an enemy submarine on December 11 while enroute to San Francisco. Two of the crew are dead and two are missing.

There has been no enemy activity in the vicinity of Midway Island recently.

Far East There are no new developments to report.

Central Pacific Wake Island sustained another strong air attack in the forenoon of the 22nd. Several enemy planes were shot down.

An enemy force efiFected a landing on Wake the morning of the 23rd.

Far East Japanese claims of seizure of a large nimiber of American merchant vessels are without foundation. The only U. S. merchant vessel known to have been seized by the Japanese is the S. S. PRESIDENT HARRISON.

The S. S. LARRY D O H E N Y was also shelled by an enemy submarine, but reached port safely. Press reports of the sinking of the S. S. MONTEBELLO are confirmed.

Central Pacific Radio Communication with Wake has been severed and the capture of the island is probable. Two enemy destroyers were lost in the final landing operations.

Palmyra Island was shelled by an enemy submarine. Damage was negligible. There were no casualties. Johnston Island was also shelled by an enemy submarine with no damage to material and no casualties resulting.

The Hawaiian area was quiet.

December 26, 1941.

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the Naval simation based on reports received up to 9:00 A.M. (EST) today: Far East Press reports of U. S. submarine aaivities in the Far East on Christmas Day are confirmed. A dispatch from Admiral Hart states that one enemy transport and one minesweeper have been sunk. An additional transport and one seaplane tender are probably sunk.

Manila has been declared an open city as defined in Hague Convention (IV) of 1907, Annex, Article 25. Our forces have complied .with the stipulations of that convention.

Central Pacific Enemy reports that 3000 naval and marine personnel were engaged in the defense of Wake Island are incorrect. The total strength of the garrison was less than 400 oflScers and men. There were approximately 1000 civilians engaged in construction work on the island which may account for the enemy statement that 1400 prisoners were capmred.

Eastern Pacific Enemy submarines still are operating in the West Coast shipping lanes. Due to the effective counter measures adopted by our forces they are experiencing great difl&culty in prosecuting their attacks.

Central Pacific Counter measures against enemy submarines patrolling in the Hawaiian Area are being vigorously prosecuted.

December 29, 1941.

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the naval simation based on reports received up to 9:00 A.M. (EST) today: Far East U. S. submarines have sunk two additional ships of the enemy. One was a transport, the other a supply vessel.

During enemy air operations one of our destroyers was attacked. Slight damage and minor casualties resulted.

Central Pacific Thirteen survivors of the S.S. PRUSA, torpedoed by an enemy submarine on December 18, have been rescued.

Eastern Pacific Japanese vessels are suspected of being in the vicinity of Kodiak. All merchant vessels have been warned.

The U. S. Naval Base at Cavite was evacuated before the enemy entered Manila. All records, equipment, and stores that were not destroyed by bombing were removed prior to evacuation by Naval personnel. All industrial and supply facilities, including fuel were destroyed. The personnel of the Naval hospital remained at their posts at the Naval hospital, Canacao, to care for the wounded. All ships and Naval personnel were removed from the Manila-Cavite area prior to enemy occupation.

January 5, 1942.

COMMUNIQUE N O . 24

The Navy Department issued the following communique on the naval simation based on reports received up to noon (EST) today: Far East The U.S.S. H E R O N , a small seaplane tender, while engaged in action with enemy planes over a period of seven hours sustained one direct bomb hit and three very near misses. The HERON was attacked by a total of ten four-engined flying boats and five twin-engined land plane bombers. Forty-six 100 pound bombs were dropped by the enemy planes and three torpedoes were launched at her sides. Due to very skillful handling, the ship was most courageously fought against overwhelming odds, and destroyed one four-engined flying boat, badly damaged at least one other and probably more. The ship though receiving damage from one bomb that found its mark managed to reach port safely. The Commander-in-Chief of the Asiatic Fleet, Thomas S, Hart, in accordance with an order of the Secretary of the Navy has awarded the Navy Cross to the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant William Leverette Kabler and recommended that he be advanced immediately to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Further recommendations regarding other personnel will be made at a later date.

It has been ascertained from late information that the patients and staflf at the Naval Hospital, Canacao, near Cavite, were evacuated to Manila priot to the occupation of that city by the enemy.

Atlantic Area The merchant ship MARCONI flying the Panamanian flag but reported to be of Italian ownership was captured and brought into Cristobal, Canal Zone and mrned over to the courts for adjudication.

The submarine simation in the Atlantic Area and off the West Coast of the United States remains unchanged.

The Hawaiian area was quiet.

With limited defensive means against attacks in great force, they manned their shore installations and flew their aircraft so well that five .enemy warships were either sunk or severely damaged, many hostile planes shot down, and an unknown number of land troops destroyed." ^ ^ ^ -^ Wake An increase of two Japanese warships—a destroyer and a gunboat—over the originally reported craiser, submarine and 3 destroyers that the Japs lost in the attack on Wake Island, was indicated in two reports to Marine Corps Headquarters, received from the Pacific Area.

These reports were sent from Wake Island by a patrol plane.

One, written on 20 December, is from Major Paul A. Putnam, commanding aviation on Wake. The other is a day by day account of Marine Aviation's participation in the battle of Wake Island up to 20 December by Major W, Bayler.

The day by day record of the battle, though not an oflScial report, is Major Bayler's account of what Marine Aviation and Major Devereaux's men did.

Major Bayler's report has but little reference to tlie Marines on the isle besides the aviation group, but one brief note —""Japs closed into 4700 yards before five and three inch guns opened up at point blank range"—indicates a cool courage on the part of Devereux's men that ranks with the classic ""whites of their eyes" line of Bunker Hill, in the opinion of ranking officers at Marine Corps Headquarters.

Added to the two Japanese destroyers which were lost in the final phase of the battle of December 22, the new information received brings Japanese losses in taking the Island of Wake up to a total of seven warships—one cruiser, four destroyers, one submarine, and one gunboat.

Winter Sports Open The Navy winter sport season is now underway, with the usual crowd of spectators considerably reduced by the wartime regulations restricting admission to the academy.

The basketball team got away to a good start by mrning in a 44 to 34 victory over Columbia and the wrestling team mrned back the North Carolina grapplers. But the Tarheels got revenge in the pool, defeating the Navy swimmers.

All the Navy sport squads have been hard hit by the early graduation.

Major Emery E. (Swede) Larson, head football coach for three seasons, has left the station for other duties and Comdr.

John E. Whechel, U. S. N., has been made head coach.

Commander Whechel is well known to the football followers of the academy and the fleet. He graduated in 1919 after playing quarterback on the football team under Coach Gilmour Dobie.

While a player he was a teammate of Comdr. L. S. Perry, now graduate manager of athletics.

He was an assistant coach at the academy from 1919 to 1924 and coached various athletic teams in the fleet and at the Operating Base in Norfolk. Last season he was a backfield coach of the varsity.

His coaching duties will be in addition to his regular assignment in the Department of Ordnance and Gunnery.

The Navy football team will play the usual nine game schedule in 1942, ending with the classic Army-Navy clash in Philadelphia on Nov. 28.

The academy authorities have decided to continue with the regular schedule of athletic events in all sports, subject of course, to any necessary changes which unusual war-time conditions may demand.

FEBRUARY,

1942

The season will open in Annapolis on Sept. 29 with William and Mary furnishing the opposition. Yale will play the midshipmen in Baltimore on Oct. 17, taking the place of Harvard in accordance with an agreement worked out several years ago. Under this agreement Yale and Harvard play Navy on alternate years.

Lafayette and Cornell, met this season, are replaced by Georgia Tech, to be played at the academy on Oct. 24, and Colimibia to be played on the same field on Nov. 14. The University of Virginia will play the midshipmen in place of West Virginia.

Once again the Navy will meet its traditional gridiron foes, Princeton, Notre Dame and Pennsyvania.

Oct. 3—Virginia at Annapolis.

Oct. 10—Princeton at Princeton.

Oct. 17—^Yale at Baltimore.

Midshipman J. J. Creamer, Hopedale, Mass., has been elected captain of the cross-country team, with Midshipman R. S. Lewellen, Madison, Ind., as manager.

Midshipmen G. H. Ochenrider, Jr., Aristes, Pa., is captain of the soccer team. Midshipman H. O, Cutler, Hilburn, N. Y., is manager.

over the Columbia University basketball team on Jan. 10 in the first game of the court season at the Naval Academy.

Huntemer more than matched the play of Les Martens, Columbia's sharpshooting guard, who rolled in a total of 13 points for his team. The midshipman came through with 19 points, 11 in the first half and got eight more in the second frame.

Coach John N. Wilson of Navy was forced to build his team around Bill Busik and Bob Zoeller, co-captains, because of the early graduation this year.

But he uncovered a player with a deadeye for the basket when he found Huntemer.

The game was tied eight times, with Navy holding a 17-15 second half advantage, and breaking a 34-34 tie in the last six minutes of play to win.

Bob Fallot, who made 7 points, opened the scoring by getting a charity toss on Al Lassater's foul. Then Harry Allison dropped in a basket and Martens tallied and was fouled, getting a marker on the following foul throw. Columbia was leading 6 to 0 before Huntemer got going. He broke through with a field goal, made a point on Fallot's foul and then dropped in two goals from the side.

Allison had snared a charity toss and the score was tied 7-7 after 8 minutes.

Mcllvennan and Allison shoved it up to 12 for Columbia but Urey Patrick, Jim Black and Bob Zoeller tied it up again with 5 minutes left in the half.

Busik got a Navy point on Mcllvennan's foul and then Huntemer fired in a basket to give Navy a 15-13 lead. Martens Basketball tied it up again with little more than a minute to go, but Huntemer came back Navy, 44; Columbia, 34. to make another basket and give Navy a Navy, 51; Delaware, 20. two point advantage at the half.

when field goals by Zoeller and Patrick and a foul shot by Black were matched by two goals shot by Mcllvennan and a field goal and a foul shot by Martens, Allison made it 24 for Columbia with a running shot under the basket, and Patrick came back to tie it up the sixth time with a side shot. Zoeller and Black both connected before Fallot dropped in one from the side. Huntemer got another Navy goal and the middies led 28-26 with 10 minutes left to play.

Huntemer made it 30 for the middies and Black netted another goal but Fallot dropped in a long outside shot and then was allowed to get set for another tieing it up 32-32 with 8 minutes left. Martens put Columbia ahead with a fast shot but Himtemer tied it up for the eighth time, 34 to 34.

Then Paul Lacey and Bill Busik scored for Navy as both teams fought hard for the advantage. Zoeller had to leave the game on four personals. Fallot fouled Huntemer as he was shooting and the midshipmen dropped in two charity tosses. Then Busik finished the game by dropping in a goal from the side.

DELAWARE

The Navy basketball team took its second game of the season on Jan. 14 when it mrned in an easy, 51 to 20 win over the University of Delaware quint.

Navy coach John N . Wilson substimted freely, using 13 men during the game, particularly after the Navy team had rolled up a 35 to 7 advantage by the end of the first half.

Delaware scoring during the period was limited to two field goals by Buck Thompson, center, and three free throws by Fred Mitchell and George Barlow.

Bob Zoeller, co-captain and forward, led the Navy scoring with nine points, but every Navy player, with the exception of two substimtes, Wally Honour and R. E. Spreen, mrned in markers, Thompson was the high scorer of the game with 10 points.

The middies used a man to man defense and broke up the Delaware offense. Zoeller and Bill Busik, co-captain and George Stivers led the Navy scoring spree that made 35 points in the first period. About 5 minutes before the half ended, Wilson trotted out his first group of substimtes.

Gene Huntemer, high scorer against Columbia, took up the Navy drive in the second half, making a total of eight points. Navy was on the ball after the

majority of the rebounds and worked fast breaks well.

The Naval Academy varsity wrestling team got four falls and a decision on Jan. 10 to defeat the North Carolina University matmen, 23 to 11. It was the opening match of the season.

Bill Redfern, North Carolina, got a decision over Bob Ploss in the 121 pound class and Hobart McKeever, North Carolina, tossed Jack Heimark in the 128 pound bout.

Sam Mordecai, North Carolina, put up a fine fight against Mickey Bennett, Navy's Eastern Intercollegiate 155 pound class, losing by a referee's decision as the result of 5 points for Bennett and 4 for Mordecai.

Earl Buckwalter, Navy tossed John Robinson in the 136 pound class; Bob Kitt, Navy, threw Gene Davant, 145 pound wrestler; Bill Carmichael, Navy Captain got a fall over Len Gibbon in the 175 pound class and Shaffer Swift, Middie heavy, tossed John Sasser.

The Virginia Military Instimte riflemen defeated the Navy varsity indoor riflemen, 1,378 to 1,375 in the first shoulder match of the season on Jan. 10.

The Virginians took the match by winning in the standing firing.

MIT Navy's recently formed pistol team opened the season successfully on Jan. 10 with a win over the Massachusetts Instimte of Technology team on the Naval Academy range.

The midshipmen rolled up advantages in the kneeling and rapid firing to win 1,254 to 1,219.

The Naval Academy plebes came from behind on Jan, 10 to defeat the Gettysburg College freshman basketball team, 37 to 33.

Captain Johnny Erhardt led his Gettysburg team with eight points in the hit by first half to give the young Bullets a slim season 18 to 16 lead at half-time. The players 17 decovered rebounds well.

North

Navy's swimming team, hard the early graduation, opened its on Jan. 10 going down to a 58 to feat before the University of Carolina tankmen.

The Tarheels, holders of the Southern Conference tide last year, got their revenge for their only defeat of 1941.

Navy mrned them back but they went on to defeat the southern teams.

North Carolina opened the meet this season by taking the 300 yard medley relay race and then went on to take first in the seven individual events and the 400 yard relay.

Denmond Hammond, North Carolina, took the 150 yard back stroke, with Henry Cooke of Navy second. Cooke also placed second to Jack Eshelman, North Carolina, in the 50 yard free style.

Bob Ousley won the 200 yard breast stroke for the Tarheels. In this event.

Bob Ortland, son of Henry Ortland, Navy swimming coach, placed third for North Carolina.

George Coxhead, North Carolina, won the 100 yard free style and placed third in the 50 yard free style, John Feuchenberger won the fancy diving for the southerners.

Army and Navy Basket Ball Game The Army and Navy Basket Ball game will be played at the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, New York, at 4 o'clock P. M., Samrday March 7th, 1942.

Because of limited seating capacity of the field house at West Point, only a very limited number of tickets for this game are available for distribution.

In agreement with regulations promulgated by the Army Athletic Association, host for this game, it is necessary to restrict the issue of basket ball tickets to not over two gratis tickets per each applicant for his personal use as a member of the Navy Athletic Association.

• JOHN J. McMULLEN, '40, Ensign, U. S. Navy, has been commended by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox for the rescue of another oflicer from drowning on October 31, 1941, when a fighter plane that the latter was piloting crashed at sea.

Ensign McMuUen dived overboard from a destroyer and swam underwater to rescue Ensign James P. Bates, Jr., U. S. Naval Reserve, who had been hurled into a choppy sea following the crash of the plane that he was piloting.

In a letter of commendation to Ensign McMuUen, Secretary Knox stated in part, "Your timely action in reaching the submerged, unconscious body, bringing it to the surface, and holding it there until arrival of the destroyer's motor whaleboat was directly the reason for saving the life of a brother officer who responded to resuscitation eflForts, , . .

"Your demonstrated initiative, courage, presence of mind, and unselfishness in the rescue of Ensign J. P. Bates, U. S. Naval Reserve, are in accordance with the highest traditions of the service, and the Department commends you therefore."

My last letter to you was a sad one. I am afraid this will have to be in the same tenor, for we have lost another classmate.

Bailey Pride lost his life in the raid on Pearl Harbor and, as far as I know, was '4l's only casualty. However, he shall be gready missed among our ranks. Please remove his name from the class officers at the head of our "dope" column. The vacancy will not be filled until after the war. Until that time there will be little use for class organization and functions and I shall assume his duties.

We are aU looking forward to peaceful days again, but realize there is a big job to be done before that is possible.

SAN FRANCISCO BRANCH Mark that while our next meeting will, as usual, be held on the first Thursday of the month—February 5th—the meeting will be held at a convenient hour of six or six-thirty.

The reason for this change is the inability of the officers on duty at the 12th District Headquarters to absent themselves from their duties, which under existing circumstances are most exacting, for the time which a luncheon in midday consumes. The location of our dinner is not being considered, and as soon as an appropriate place has been selected it will be made known to our members. In the meantime, however, it may definitely be stated that a dinner will be held on the evening of February 5th at the time already mentioned, January's meeting found Professor H. G, Schenck as the guest speaker. Prior to his very interesting talk Haller Belt announced

Brazilian Government and attend the PanAmerican Conference. At this writing John is already on his way by Pan-American Clipper to the Southland. It gave us a lot of pleasute to again see Hubert McLellan who breezed in and tells us that for some time to come he will be amongst us. The President read a letter from the widow of Commander Pond wherein she addressed the Alumni and expressed her appreciation for the letter and flowers which were sent in the hour of her bereavement.

The speaker illustrated his talk with lantern slides made from pictures while he was searching for oil in Iran and Afghanistan. After some comments on the make up of his staff and the equipment which he gathered for his journey he briefly sketched his trip from New York to his destination via the Azores, Marseilles, Alexandria and Beirut, He then journied to Bagdad, Turan, and after thoroughly going through Afghanistan we found ourselves in Bombay, thence to Europe and home. His journey covered over twenty-five thousand miles, and when he superimposed a map of Iran and Afghanistan on the same scaled picture of the United States it showed roughly a triangle running from Illinois to the West Coast, one leg of the triangle reaching the Pacific Coast at the Oregon-Washington boundary and the other at San Diego, He discussed and illustrated with pictures the advantages of the four foot camel drive method of travel as against the four wheel drive V-8 Ford, and in this contest the camels won.

The advantages of growing whiskers in order to better get along with the natives, as well as the wisdom in thoroughly boiling your drinking water and avoiding uncooked fruit and green vegetables were matters which were of great importance, particularly to the traveler himself. Views of Ishbahan in central Persia and the fact that polo originated in Persia and not in India as is commonly supposed prepared us for further informative pictures which showed the remains of Xerxes Palace and the remains of the Great Hall of Persepolis. Cruciform tombs were found in the sides of mountain cliff, and these tombs probably include that of Darius, Xerxes and Valerius.

We were told that the Afghanistans, by reason of taxes and various other faaors which they consider irritating, may shoot a white man on sight as also do some of the Bulushistan inhabitants. We were told that oil in the country of his exploration is present but quite difficult to get out by reason of political and transportation problems. The Germans had already surveyed that country for oil and iron as had also the Belgians; and as for the country about the Caspian Sea, we were told that their rice, wheat, barley, cotton and sugar are of the best. The Baku oil field is in a huge mud volcano, and the supply of oil which it contains is exceedingly great. The speaker presented his subject in a very pleasing way, and all those who heard him benefited gteatly by what he had to tell.

Please note again that our next meeting will be held on the first Thursday of February —February 5th—and will be at six or sixthltty p, m. at a place yet to be selected but which will be made known to our members.

Naval Communiques (Continued from page 24) Major Bayler was on temporary duty in Wake in connection with the establishment of a base of operations for the Marine Corps Aviation unit. This unit composed of 12 planes, with pilots, forty-nine ground personnel, arrived shortly before the outbreak of hostilities. Following is a copy of the penciled notes the Major made from the records kept by him and sent to the Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet. He was present at Wake until December 20.

Dec. 9, 11:45 A.M.—27 Japs. Bombed hospital. Camp No, 2, Killed several patients. 3 dead. Got one Jap plane.

Dec, 10, 10:45 AM.—27 Jap bombers. No casualties.

Dec. 11, 5:00 A.M.—Landing attempt by twelve jap ships, including light cruisers, destroyers, gunboats, two troop or supply ships. Jap casualties: one light cruiser, two destroyers, one gunboat, two bombers.

NOTE: That Japs closed into 4700 yards before five and three inch guns opened up at point blank range.

Dec. 12—27 Jap planes bombed Peale and Wake from 22,000 feet. No casualties.

Dec. 13—All quiet.

Dec. 14—32 Jap planes hit airdrome. Two killed, one plane down (own destroyed by bombs).

Dec. 15, 11:00 A.M.—Dawn raid by three four engined seaplanes. 27 Jap bombers. Shot down 2 Japs.

Dec. 16, 5:45 P.M.—41 Jap bombers hit Camp Two and airdrome. Jap four motor plane raid. One Jap shot down.

Dec. 17—32 Jap bombers at 1317 hit Camp 1, Peale Island, Diesel oil supply, mess hall, and pumps of evaporarors. Camp 1.

Dec. 18, 11:40 A.M.—One Jap high rec-. plane (2 engine) (photo?).

Dec. 19, 10:30 A.M.—Jap bombers hir airport and camp.

Dec. 20—All quiet—1st day of bad weather.

Total casualties: 28 dead, 6 wounded, as of Dec. 20 from VMF-211.

NOTES: (1) Jap bombers of Dornier type, 2 engine, twin tail, 160 knots.

(2) Attack formations always in form of line of division V's in close formation. Excellent air discipline.

(3) 9 sure Jap bombers shot down; 3 more possibly. 1 4-engine P boar, 1 CL, 2 DD, 1 Gunboat, Major Purnam's report of operations to his commanding officer in Pearl Harbor goes into more detail on the efiforts of the tiny aviation complement to keep the planes that were left after the first attack in the air against each new attack.

Of the original aviation force of rwelve officers and 49 enlisted men, 19 enlisted men and 8 officers were still on duty by December 20. Of these, four enlisted men and two officers were wounded but still on duty. One officer and six enlisted men were in the hospital and ""doing nicely." The remainder, three officers and rwenty-four men, were dead.

The letter relates that four planes were in the air against the Japs at the time of the firsr raid. The other eight were on the

ground being serviced between flights, and of these seven were destroyed and one was slightly damaged. One of the planes that was in the air later taxied into debris on the field—the wreckage of the first raid—and bent its propeller.

The Marine fighters, up to December 20, had made contact with the enemy seven times, had shot down five Japs in flames, four more had ""been claimed by pilots but not verified and several are known to have been damaged. Of the four claimed one was a four-engined seaplane."

Discussing the surface attack of December 11, Putnam reported ""four airplanes (Marine planes) made a total of ten attacks, operating in a greatly overloaded condition and performing splendidly. . . , We claim the sinking of one ship and serious damage to another," The guns of Devereaux's force evidently accounted for the remainder of the ships reported destroyed in Major Bayler's synopsis. In the attack on December 11, one plane was lost, ""a washout on the rocky beach."

After the attack on December 14, which saw two Marine planes destroyed, "one plane on the ground by enemy action and one crashed on the takeoff" the Marines had "only two operating airplanes, one of which gives constant trouble so that two planes in the air at one time is the exception rather than the rule." At one time only one serviceable plane was left to Major Putnam's squadron, but the mechanics and ground crews evidently made an additional plane, or even planes out of the wreckage of the remainder.

Lauding the work of the ground crews at Wake, Major Putname wrote "since that time (the first raid) parts and assemblies have been traded back and forth so that no airplane can be identified. Engines have been traded from plane to plane, have been junked, stripped, rebuilt, and all but created," Continuing his praise for the men under him. Major Putnam wrote ""all hands have behaved splendidly and held up in a manner which the Marine Corps may well tell. I have no reporr to make regarding any officer or man being outstanding in bravery or fortimde; they have all acquitted themselves with equal distinction. On the other hand, I particularly wish to comment on the indefatigable labor, and ingenuiry, skill and rechnical knowledge of Lieutenant Kinney and Technical Sergeant Hamilton, It is solely due to their efforts that the squadron is still operaring."

Discussing the living conditions on the airdrome as they were on December 20, Major Putnam said ""Personnel are living in dugouts made by the contractor's men and equipment.

Not comforrable but adequate against all but direct bomb hits.

Feeding is from the contractor's galley, a truck making the rounds with hot food twice daily. Sanitation is only fair, but so far have had only a mild flurry of diarrhea. Fresh water is adequate for drinking, but salt water is used for all other purposes."

The tone of the entire report indicates no particular anxiety on the part of the air group at Wake, They were there under orders with a job to do. They were doing the job and would continue to do it until circumstances beyond their control forced them to discontinue their efforts. They had kept those circumstances under control for almost two weeks and they would continue to do so.

At no time during the seige were more than four Marine planes in operation, Putnam reported, but the verified total that these planes took of the Japanese was one ship, one submarine, and five Jap planes.

There is nothing to report from other areas.
