Things Worth Dying For speaking in Rochester not long ago, a lecturer declared the overwhelming sentiment of our youth to be, "No matter what happens, we don't want to die." Before my mind's eye, as I read the words, passed a great and glorious host of men and women who have given their lives for a cause—^martyrs and missionaries, scientists and soldiers, public servants and patriots. And I wondered whether we who are here would have fotmd very much worth living for if no one had ever fotmd anything worth dying for.

No normal person wants to die. But, fommately, there have been millions of normal people who have believed that there are things worse than death—compromise of conscience, dereliction of duty, loss of liberty and self-respect. A friend of mine, exhausted by a long swim, climbed upon a deserted raft, and saw a girl floating near him, her face upmrned.

Believing her unconscious, he went to her rescue without taking care to avoid her grasp. The girl clutched him so tightly that he was unable to keep his mouth and nose above water. "I could have broken away and got back to the raft alone," he said, "and the temptation was almost irresistible."

"What kept you from yielding to it?"

I asked.

"The thought," my friend answered, "that, knowing what I had done, I should have to live with myself."

A third swimmer brought these two ashore, but, whatever the end, it seems to me that my friend chose wisely. The man who refuses to risk death "no matter what happens" must live with himself.

But do you remember the brass band that went on playing while the vessel was sinking? Did you know that every enlisted man in the fleet volunteered to sail the collier Merrimac under the Spanish guns at Santiago de Cuba and block the channel by blowing her up? Every man and woman in the employ of the Southern California telephone companies was cited for risking life in devotion to duty following the earthquake of March 10, 1933. Did you ever hear of Alvin Page, the railway postal clerk, who, faced by four armed desperadoes on a Texas & Pacific train out of Dallas, calmly dragged away the mailbags behind which they were hiding, and exposed them to the fire of secret-service men concealed in the car? Or of Sarah J. Rooke, the sixtyeight-year-old switchboard operator at Folsom, New Mexico, who stuck to her post, warning people, "The river's broken loose up the valley; run for your lives!" until she and her cottage were swept into the flood? Did you know of Patrick F. O'NeiU, the school-teacher who, under fire, carried twenty-five pounds of dynamite to blow up the refuge of convicts who had shot their guards and were defying the militia in the state penitentiary at Canon City, Colorado? And did you read a few weeks ago of the English doctor who was operating for mastoid when planes bombed the hospital? There was an air-raid shelter outside. Did the doctor run for it? No, he finished the operation! And your family doctor doubtless would have done the same.

Em sorry, but I can't believe that speaker in Rochester; too many people have proved, and are proving it false.

There may be thousands so soft, so timid, so comfortable that nothing else seems to them as worth while as existence, but there are millions who know that to live under certain conditions may be only prolonging death.

It is not those lying in Flanders Fields who suffer, but countless numbers of those who go on living in Poland and Belgium and France. To these, the dying might have said what Jesus said to the daughters of Jerusalem—"Weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children."

A people that prefers dishonor to death will have reason to weep. The man who would not perish for wife, child, country, or for any ideal or achievement or principle, is part of a death of the •soul by which mankind survives. There must be a last trench beyond which the human spirit will not retreat. Whatever we have of security and dignity and wellbeing, for ourselves, our nation and our

In the fall of 1874, not long after the Academy opened, plans were made for an interclass race the following spring.

The cadet engineers, 28 in number, decided they would like to enter, making five contestants instead of the usual four.

There was some difficulty raising money to purchase a shell; but finally an old paper shell was found at a bargain, and the Academy carpenters put it in shape.

It weighed 160 lbs. The new cedar shell of the 1st Classmen weighed less than 75 lbs. We named our shell "Plebe," much to the disgust of the other crews.

Next came tryouts for the crew of four. Evenmally they simmered down to the five shown in the picmre: Thomas J. Hogan, stroke; Mortimer E. Cooley, No. 2 and Captain; Harry S. Elseffor and Henry K. Ivers, No. 3 (alternates); and Frank W. Bartlett, bow and cockswain.

The crew rowed daily until winter set in, and started again early in the spring.

We rose an hour early in the morning, sucked a raw egg on our way to the Boathouse, and usually rowed up the Severn to Round Bay and back. Then we took a plunge, dressed, and rushed off to breakfast. Namrally we grew hard as nails.

Also namrally, we grew sleepy during evening hours, and our work suffered.

For instance, I entered No. 7 and dropped to No. 14 that first year. Three of the crew failed in their work and were mrned back.

Late in April, or early in May, we met with an accident that for the moment promised to put us out of the race. One of the old monitors was anchored midstream northward of the Maryland Ave. line, and extended across the Severn between this line and the present bridge.

We were coming down at a spanking clip, and misjudging our distance from the monitor, ran the sharp prow of our boat some four feet into one of the links of the anchor chain. We managed to back out, and with the bow wobbling, made our way to the nearby Boathouse. The Academy Carpenter again came to our race; all that separates us from savagery, everything of the mind and heart, and of aspiration and accomplishment, has been won and held by men and women who, wanting to live, still "dared for a high cause to suffer, resist, fight—if need be, to die."

Finally came the day of the race. The course was 2 miles up the Severn and back to the starting line a short distance below the old monitor. W e were all off to a good start, the "Plebe" well in the lead for the first quarter mile or so. Then came an accident that not even the Academy Carpenter had foreseen. Our stroke out-rigger was partially carried away. It seemed useless to continue, but Hogan kept on timing the stroke, and the three of us kept on pulling. W e lost the race of course but were not outdistanced. We rowed up to the judges' boat and showed them what had happened to the "Plebe."

While no protest was in order, we did hope that in the record of the race some mention would be made of our mishap.

W e made our plans for next year's race hoping to be able to buy a new shell. But that fall in a violent storm, the Boathouse and all it contained was washed out into the Bay. That was the end of racing during my day. I do not know when it started again, but think it was many years afterward.

He was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps from civil life on April 13, 1900. He was promoted to First Lieutenant, March 3, 1903; Captain, May NOVEMBER,

The 10th day of November, 1940, marks the one hundred and sixty-fifth anniversary of the Marine Corps. The two regiments composing the original corps were organized by an act of the Continental Congress, 10 November, 1775, the first regular military organization of this country.

On the 10th day of November, 1775, the Continental Congress passed an Act, authorizing and providing for the organization of the two regiments composing the original Corps. The Marines served on board the ships of the young American Navy, and took part in various engagements. As part of the landing force, they played an outstanding part in the Penobscot Bay Expedition against the British, where their discipline and valor made them invaluable to the commander of the expedition.

The Treaty of Paris in 1793 ended the war, and within two years the United States was totally disarmed. It has not one public vessel. However, several of the states, with the permission of Congress, maintained small cruisers, and on these the Marines were an essential part of the ship's complement. F., the Purple Heart, and was three times cited in General Orders of the Second Division, A. E. F. The French Government conferred on him the Cross of the Legion of Honor, and three times awarded him the Croix de Guerre with Palm.

The Marine Corps as it is today, dates from 1798, when Congress passed an "Act for the establishing and organizing a marine corps." This Act was passed the 11th of July of that year. It provided for one major, 4 captains, 16 1st lieutenants, 12 2nd lieutenants, 48 sergeants, 42 corporals, 32 drums and fifes, and 720 privates. The Corps was to be governed by Navy Regulations, and the pay of all but commissioned officers was according to

the Act of July 1, 1797. The pay rates for the different grades were as follows: major, $50 a month and four rations a day; captains, $40 a month, and three rations a day; 1st lieutenants, $30 a month, and three rations; 2nd lieutenants, $20 a month, and two rations a day. The pay for the enlisted men was: sergeants, $9 a month; corporals, $8 a month; musicians, $7 a month; privates, $6 a month.

The rules for the enlistment of men in the Marines had been promulgated shortly before, by Benjamin Stoddert, the Secretary of the Navy, who at that time also administered the Marines. (The separation of the Navy Department from the Department of War had occurred April 30, 1798.) No indirea methods of enlistment were to be used. Men were not to be enhsted while intoxicated. N o negroes, mulattoes, or Indians would be taken, and no foreigners unless they had a well-established reputation for "Sobriety and Fidelity." The men had to be at least 5 feet 4 inches in height, and 18 -to 40 years in age. The Rtdes and Acts for the government of the Navy were read to the recruits before they enrolled, and immediately after they were enrolled they had to give up their own clothing.

The uniforms were plain, short blue coats, edged with red, with red collar facings, lapels, and belts; the trousers were blue, edged with red, and there was a red waistcoat. There were multimdinous buttons, of the same kind used by the Navy, bearing an eagle with a shield on the left wing, and a foul anchor.

Black leather stocks were worn, accounting for the term "leathernecks." Noncommissioned officers had uniforms of finer cloth, and carried hangers. The hats were round, bound with yellow, and mrned up on the side with a cockade.

The total cost of the men's uniforms, with an extra pair of trousers, two pairs of shoes, and a blanket, was to be "about $20."

The officers' uniforms were even more briUiant than those of the men. They were long, blue coats with red lapels and facings, slash sleeves with red cuffs, red waistcoats, and blue trousers. There were nine gold buttons with the eagle and foul anchor design on the lapels, one on the collar, and three on each cuff. Lieutenants in conmiand wore a gold epaulet on the right shoulder. If there were two lieutenants, the junior wore his epaulet on the left shoulder. The full dress included cocked hats with black cockades, and gold-mounted swords.

It might be mentioned in passing that from August 7, 1789 until April 29, 1798, naval affairs, including those of the

Marines, were administered by the Department of War. From April 30, 1798 (when the Navy Department was established) until July 11, 1798 the Marines were administered directly by the Secretary of the Navy. From July 11, 1798 up to the present they have been directed by the Secretary of the Navy through the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

There had been a great deal of discussion of the necessity for the Marines before the Corps was organized under the Act of July 11, 1798. One suggestion made was to take infantry units and to train them for sea service. It was felt by some that there was no need for a separate Corps, inasmuch as they would be scattered among many ships and shore stations, and there would be no oppormnity for coordinated training of the Marines. When the bill was finally passed, it contained a provision whereby the President could drastically reduce the ntunber of Marines in service. This provision was that Marines might be enlisted for three years, "subject to be discharged by the President of the United States, or by the ceasing or repeal of the laws providing for the naval armament."

The President took advantage of this provision in 1803 and 1804, when he slashed the number of men enlisted in the Corps.

For a long time there was some doubt as to whether the Army or the Navy exercised jurisdiction over the Marines, proceeding from a seaion of the Act of July 11, 1798, which read, "That the officers, . . . shall take the same oath, and shall be governed by the same rules and articles of war, as are prescribed for the military establishment of the United States, and by the rules for the regulations of the Navy, heretofore, or which shall be established by law, according to the nature of the service in which they shall be employed ..." The result of this was that while on shore, the Marines were in general governed by the Army Regulations, while on shipboard they were governed by the Navy Regulations.

However in some instances there were rules which applied to the Marines regardless of the station, as for example that which abolished flogging in the Marines long before it was abolished in the Navy. I h i s came from the Secretary of the Navy's decision that an Army law applied to the Marines. This question of jurisdiction was unsettled until June 30, 1834, when Congress legislated that the Marines were under naval jurisdiction unless detached by the President for service with the Army.

pointed Major, the first commandant of the Corps, on July 12, 1798. He established his headquarters under canvas not far from the heart of downtown Philadelphia, which was then the capital of the United States. When the weather turned cool, he moved to a rented barracks near the Navy Yard. Alternating between these two locations, the headquarters remained in Philadelphia until the Federal Government moved to Washington in July, 1800.

By the Act of April 22, 1800, Congress authorized the appointment of a "Lieutenant Colonel Commandant" to "command the Corps of Marines," who should receive the same pay and emoluments as a lieutenant colonel in the Army. This was the first time that the grade of Commandant was expressly created, but the act also abolished the office of Major of the Corps, and left the Corps without any majors.

In the years following the establishment of the Corps in 1798, the Corps saw much service in the war with France.

One of the most daring actions occurred in May, 1800, in the harbor of Puerta Plata in Santo Domingo. The Sally, under Lt. Isaac Hull, at sea from the Constitution and manned by about ninety marines and bluejackets, ran alongside* the French letter of marque Sandwich, and capmred her. Then the Marines under Captain Carmick waded ashore in water "up to their necks" and spiked the guns of the fort commanding the harbor before the commanding officer could organize his defense. The Marines were back aboard the Sandwich in about an hour from the time that she was captured. The next morning the Americans took the Sandwich out to join the Constitution. The sequel to this spectacular affair was not so pleasant. As the neutrality of the Spanish port had been violated in the taking of the ship, she had to be given up, after having been sent into New York as a prize.

In the early days of the Marines, dueling was the usual way of avenging real or fancied insults. Many Marine officers were involved in duels, and some of them were killed. So rigid was the code of honor that the Lieutenant Colonel Commandant once wrote to one of his officers that "a blow ought never to be forgiven, and without you wipe away this insult offered to the Marine Corps, you cannot expect to join our officers." He continued, "I am no advocate of duelling, but if a man is forced into a quarrel he ought to go through with it like a man."

been struck by a Lieutenant of the Trumbull, had akeady challenged his opponent, but had received an apology, and peace was restored without bloodshed. The Commandant wrote to him, approving of his action in accepting the apology, and said that "it is never beneath a gentleman and a man of spirit to confess his error, and I should rather have the better opinion of a man for doing it.

In the one hundred and sixty-five years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence the Marines have seen action in about a hundred of them. Unlike the Army and the Navy, the Marines can be landed to protect American lives without the declaration of war. The Marines fought in the war with France, against

the Mediterranean pirates, in the War of 1812, in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish American War. They fought against the Chinese, the Japanese, tribes of cannibals in the South Seas, and against certain tribes of the American Indians. In the years between the Spanish American War and the World War, there was only one year in which they did not see action: 1913.

The Marines form an integral part of the armed forces of the United States of America. Wherever there is need for small bodies of highly trained, well disciplined, hard hitting troops, at home on the sea as much as on land, there will be the Marines, and with them they carry the traditions of more than a cenmry and a half of service and their proud motto, "Semper Fidelis."

Little Something Dear Editor: "I do not know how much others appreciate SHIPMATE but to me it is a continual reminder of the finest associations I have ever known. It brings to mind that 'LITTLE SOMETHING' so exclusively acquired through association at the Academy irrespeaive of how long those daily associations were possible. Throughout the forty-two years that have passed since I shoved off for a non-naval profession, my memory has not dimmed and my service as a midshipman is just as clear now as it was when I marched in the rear rank and hoped and prayed that the towels stuffed into "Dolph' Andrew's white leggins would "bust' loose. The present Vice Admiral did not run to overweight from the waist down in those days. I haven't seen him for many years but I bet that he doesn't have to resort to such methods now-a-days. I can see 'Pratt' Maunix marching along with an expanded chest (he was an upper-classman later) that was his pride and joy and the envy of all the Plebes. W e had a Plebe picmre taken on the steps of the Old Plebe Barracks and I made the mistake of untying "EH' Whitney's shoes just at the time the photographer had arranged the group to his satisfaction. "Taylor Evans and "Plug' Jeffers happened to notice my dereliction and seemed to take pleasure in bringing it to my attention on every occasion when they paid me a friendly visit in the Neal-Rich Sanctum Sanctorum on the Plebe Floor.

While serving as a non-commissioned officer in the 43rd Volunteers and a member of the first detachment to leave NOVEMBER,

the transport for engagement with the insurgents at Tacloban, Leyte, P. I., I stopped by the gang-rail to lace my leggins. Evans, then an Ensign with the Naval detachment participating in the attack, passed by in a cutter. He glanced up to where I was perched on the rail, waved his hand and yelled, 'My God, Rich, are you always doing that?' Evans had a good memory for faces and I have never forgotten how many times I unlaced and laced my shoes for his personal gratification immediately following the photographing of the Class of 1901.

"I have never forgotten when "Charlie' Train, now an Admiral, extended his hand to me one night on the Plebe Floor.

He was the first upper-classman to 'spoon' on me. Why, I do not know but I do know that no other man ever did a more kindly gesmre to a kid who was scared to death of upper-classmenâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;until he realized that they were human beings like the rest of us. The following day, Tarrant, now Admiral, did the same thing and it was my pleasure to remind him of this very kindly and gracious act forty years afterwards when I met him for the first time since leaving the Academy at a Reunion of the Boston Branch Association. There were many others but these two stood, and stand, out clearest in my memory. Then there was the time when Corbesier, the Master of the Sword, invited me to his house on Prince George Street, for dinner. A grand old man and one whose thoughtfulness I still cherish.

my wedding. Owen Oakley, who came out to Manila with the Fleet, and invited Mrs. Rich and me out to dinner. Jimmie Kress was there at the time and both have passed on. Then there was 'Jack' Fremont whom I met in Paris in 1919 for the first time since 1898. Jesse Gay dropped in to see me while I was stationed at the Army base in Boston and whom I saw several times while we were both serving in that vicinity. Earle Cook, who went out of his way to make things pleasant for me when he invited me to attend the Boston dinner several years ago. I could go on and on relating similar incidences when my former classmates extended their warm handshake of greetings in just the same way as they had extended their warm friendship when I was "One o' Them' wearing the middy uniform.

"From 1914 until 1917, when I went overseas, I was on duty as Inspector-Instmctor. New York National Guard. I was given a special assignment as Captain, 71st Infantry, N Y N G and as such was able to make the Regimental Rifle Team. As a member of the team, I accompanied them to the Naval Academy for a match for the possession of the Goliah Trophy. In 1915, while shooting against the Academy team then captained

by Pennoyer on the Naval Academy Rifle Range, the scores were very close â&#x20AC;&#x201D; within a few points of each other. Major Eddie Wells, an old Pakna Marksman, was my teammate and was spotting my hits. On the final range the teams were only a point or two apart and everybody was shooting like a house afire. My sighting shots were in the black, as were the next eight. Then came a red flag from the pits. Eddie swore that he could almost see the dust fly right back of the bulleye. Pennoyer ordered all firing stopped while they inspected the target carefully.

An act typical of Naval Academy sportsmanship. Nothing indicating a hole could be found and a cold "O' went into my score. The ninth and tenth shots were in the bull. The match wound up with the Academy winning by three points. I have never been able to 'dope' out what actually happened. I was holding well, was in the black most of the time up to that 'O' and continued in the black immediately afterwards. I was shooting to win for my own team as many points as possible. It has come to my mind that that "LITTLE SOMETHING' I have always felt for the Academy must have unconsciously influenced me against my inclinations to win for the team.

crops up very time I read in the newspapers or in the Service Journals of the successful careers in the Navy of my former classmates or those upper-classmen whose personal friendship meant so much to me when I was a Plebe, and whose friendship I have always regarded as something worthwhile all during the forty-two years since I left their association. I am proud to tell my friends that "So and So was at the Academy when 1 was there.' It might appear sentimental to a marked degree but I do not consider it in this light. That 'LITTLE SOMETHING' was instilled way down deep in the hearts of every young man fortunate enough to be a Midshipman and although it might be stronger and more lasting in some instances, nevertheless it is something that I have prized above everything else in my life, insofar as association with professional men is concerned. Namrally, I have many interests in the Army profession but uppermost is that "LITTLE SOMETHING' I gained during the few months I was a Midshipman in the Class of 1901.

"Many days while looking out over Buzzards Bay from my Summer home, I see the destroyers passing in and out of the Cape Cod Canal and through the channel opposite my shore. Instinaively I say to myself, "Rich, You might have commanded one of those out there.' I didn't get that far but I did get something of the 'esprit' that has preserved the loyalty to the Naval Service inborn in every American and especially inbred in the graduates through associations at the Academy. That "LITTLE SOMETHING,' that is a part of me, is responsible for the cherished memories I have of my classmates and others in the Naval Service. It is something that cannot be bought and once gained can never be discarded.

Well, it looks as though I shall have to apologize to all of you for putting out some bad dope last month. I told you that the Youngsters were getting town liberty on Wednesday afternoons, but they are not. Here is what happened: The Reg Book came out with the usual permission for Youngsters to visit officers' quarters in the Yard on Wednesday afternoons. On the first Monday a correction came out which apparendy allowed them to go out in town on Wednesday afternoons. There was great joy and merrymaking among the Youngsters over this great extension of their privileges. However, sad to relate, the next day, Tuesday, a correction to the correction was issued, which again gave only the liberty to visit the officers' quarters. And so Youngsters are still Youngsters.

Speaking of Youngsters immediately reminds me of Plebes, who are the same as Youngsters except that they have more dignity. There also seems to be a certain amount of ingenuousness about Plebes that the ultra-sophisticated Youngsters think they have lost. However, to get on with the Plebes, here is a story that came from the Steam Department.

The U. S. S. BEAR was at Annapolis

over the week-end of 12 October. She is on her way south to evacuate the men in the base camps of Little America. After she had gone, two penguins were discovered passing in review with the Midshipmen at full dress parade. They have taken up residence in the Naval Academy ice plant, and will be at home on Thursday afternoons from 1600 until 1900.

I've seen the proposed plans for the extension of Bancroft Hall. They call for an L-shaped wing in front of each of the First and Third Batts, and one to seaward of the Second and of the Fourth Batt.

If these plans are adopted, Bancroft Hall is going to be a terrific nightmare to the entering Plebes. I recall that when I first entered I got lost over in the Third Batt and it was so long before I reached civilization that I had a full red beard. They will have to train a corps of St. Bernards to go out and rescue the lost Plebes, or else take in an extra hundred or so men in the entering class to replace those who disappear into the deserts of the unoccupied wings.

It is rumored, or as the Navy has it, scuttlebutt saith, that the Navy has been trying to buy St. Johns College to provide for expansion of the Naval Academy. The Academy has become so overgrown with buildings now that it has lost much of the spacious beauty that it once had. Some of ye olde grads may add their prayers to contribute to the downfall of the alma mammy of those notorious late daters the St. Johnnies. However, St. John's last year began a very interesting experiment in education, and that, in addition to other very good reasons, will probably end the transactions.

On November 8 the local Housing Authority will break ground for a new apartment development which will eventually house the families of 76 petty officers attached to the Naval Academy.

There has long been a need for better housing facilities in Annapolis for the men attached to the Academy, and this is welcome news indeed. I also heard that about the first of the year construction will be begun on quarters for married enlisted men. This is in line with the program all over the country to furnish housing to defense workers, one of the essential steps in the development of our defense program.

Another very interesting scuttlebutt came to my ears this day of our Lord.

I was down by the Basin looking at the grand old America and thinking that it was a shame that she was not fully rigged and sailing once again. Someone (Continued on page 15)

E. writes, "My recollection is that the old boathouse stood on the upstream side of the wharf at the end of Maryland Avenue. The old steam building and shops being on the other side. There were no bridges then, the Severn was clear all the way to "'Round Bay." In my day, the cadet midshipmen (or part of them) lived in the then large new quarters to the north'ard of Maryland Avenue; others lived in the row of old buildings extending from the Administration Building down toward old Fort Severn, known as Porter Row or maybe StribUng. The cadet engineers of 1874, as plebes, occupied building No. 6; as third classmen, building No. 5; as second classmen, building No. 4; and as first classmen, building No. 3. It is impossible to say just who are the outstanding players because there are so many. And another thing the whole team, coaching staff, the power that he and the Regiment are working hand in hand with a real fighting Navy spirit to win.

The J. V. footbaUers played a tough hard game with Princeton J. V. which was zero-zero.

The Plebes are the usual powerhouse squad, taking Georgetown Frosh 13 to 12 and Adm. Farragut Academy 27 to 0.

Bill Durand was born at Bethany, Connecticut on March 5, 1859. He was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1880, and for the next seven years served in the Engineer Corps, U. S. N. In 1887 he became professor of mechanical enginering at the Agriculmral and Mechanical CoUege, Michigan, where he taught untU 1891. From 1891 until 1904 he was professor of marine engineering at CorneU, and from 1904 until 1924 was professor of mechanical engineering at Leland Stanford University, William Frederick Durand where he is now professor emeritus. He Class of 1880 was scientific attache at American Embassy in Paris, and was a member of the Interallied Committee on Inventions in dent's Aircraft Board, 1925; member 1918 and 1919. Member of the Presi- National Advisory Committee for Aero-

nautics; member National Research Council; member National Academy of Science; American Philosophical Society, American Society of Marine Engineers, American Instimte of Electrical Engineers, Society of Naval Architects and Naval Engineers, Societe Technique de la Marine; life member and gold medalist American Society of Naval Engineers; Fellow American Academy of Arts and Sciences; A. A. A. S.; Royal Aero Society, etc. He has written many books on engineering subjects, such as his "Fundamental Principles of Mechanics," and "Hydraulics of Pipe Lines," and has contributed to many engineering journals. In fact he must have been quintuplets.

Rear Admiral Hayne EUis was born August 26, 1877, in Macon, Georgia, and was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1896. He was first attached to the U. S. S. BROOKLYN, and served in the Boxer Rebellion and in the Filipino Rebellion. From 1913 until 1916 he was

It is their desire to expand the Association, to be of greater value to aU. It is hoped that the Trust Fund will be enlarged; a proper Alumni house can be built for the benefit of the Alumni on their remrn to Aimapolis; and that the Branch Associations can be extended to more communities.

The first gathering of the land-bound Navy for Chicago's fall season was held at the Naval Reserve Armory on Friday, September 27th.

(The last Friday of each month is the usually appointed time.)

We were fortunate in having with us our oldest active member. Colonel Henry A. Allen, Class of 1887. Colonel Allen spun a few yarns (true, too) of his life in the Hawaiian Islands at the turn of the century when he was employed by a prominent pump concern.

He also told of his engineering commission on the Panama Canal construction. He is prominent among Chicago engineers as an 19

authority on water works construction and protection in time of war.

Captain B. B. Wygant who is in charge of the training of Reserve Midshipmen at Abbott Hall, Northwestern University, told us something of the work he was doing in properly training young men for commissions in the Navy. His work is indeed interesting to all of us who are more than conscious of the efforts to strengthen the National Defenses.

Swift Riche, 1915, located two strays from the fold, Parker and CritcheU. Joe Chadwick who has taken up residence in Evanston was another welcome guest. Those of you in 1931, who wondered what became of Sam Leaf, wiU be interested to know that he recently came to Chicago from St. Louis to instruct Reserve Midshipmen at Abbott Hall, Northwestern University. Another surprise to recent graduates, will be the success of C. A. (Bunny) Fleischli ('33), and M. W. Eggers ('35), in the field of medicine. Fleischli is practicing in Springfield after several years of clinic work in Chicago. Eggers is in Chicago at the Illinois Eye and Ear Clinic. Both have chosen eye and ear work as their specialty. Doaor Eggers joined us at our gathering.

Our Wednesday noon luncheons continue at the LaSalle Hotel in the Blue Fountain Room. Any Navy man passing through Chicago is welcome. Several of the Chicago group are always on hand. You might even find a classmate!

MILWAUKEE, WIS. With "all hands up anchor" the Milwaukee Chapter of the U. S. N. A. Alumni Association got under way for the 1940-1941 season, the evening of October 2nd. The gathering in the form of a dinner meeting took place in the Memorial Building of Alonzo Cudworth Post of The American Legion. The

building is situated on a high bluff on the shores of Lake Michigan and is the regular meeung place of the Milwaukee Chapter the first Wednesday evening of each month.

Many classes from 1910 to 1933 were represented at the annual meeting and election held Oaober 2nd.

NEW YORK, N. Y. SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON The speaker at our last luncheon Captain Blackburn, spoke to an audience that was fairly large considering the faa that the date for the luncheon was changed at the last moment.

As head of the Naval Reserve Personnel group of the Third Naval Distria, he was able to throw a great deal of light on a subjea that has been troubling a number of our members for sometime. He outlined the general policy of the Reserve and spoke at some length as to the qualifications needed to become an Officer in the Reserve.

Two important points were made by the speaker for absorption by ex-naval officers.

One of them warned against endeavoring to join either the Legal or the Intelligence Branches of the Service. The former because of the faa that there are NO openings available and the latter because of the faa that men are usually drafted for this service through examination of their qualifications. The other warning was direaed against those older graduates who have been separated from the service since their ensign days, and who now desire to renew their acquaintanceship with the Reserve, but only with the rank conferred upon those of their class. Captain Blackburn pointed out the unfairness of the latter, inasmuch as, should such a praaice be enforced, men who have spent their lives in the Aaive or Reserve services would be outnumbered by new officers whose days had been spent apatt from the Navy and Naval affairs.

The speaker closed his remarks with a story that illustrated the difficulty of his work. A young lad had been trying to convince the Captain of his qualifications as a useful Naval Reserve Officer. The more he protested as to his value the less apparent his usefulness appeared. Finally in desparation the Captain asked him point blank whether he aauaUy believed that he had the wherewithal to deserve a commission.

"Commission, hell," exclaimed the young hopeful. "I won't join unless I get a regular salary."

PHILADELPHIA, PA. In competition with the local night football opener, we, too, opened our Fall season with a much enjoyed dinner on Friday night, September 27th. Bookbinders, 215 South 15th Street, which has become so favorably established with our membership, was the scene of this first get-together foUowing the summer lull.

Though the crowd was not aU that had been hoped for, a goodly number was on deck to pry the lid off our 1940-41 Season, and it was especially good to see several new faces around the festive board. In keeping with the wishes of the members there was no speaker at this initial meeting, and following dinner, it quickly resolved itself into a round table discussion of interesting subjeas. The party to follow the Army-Navy game was considered, and almost everyone present indicated his intention of attending. Conscription, the war, and football possibilities along the Severn, aU came in for their share of talk. A heavy cannonading was accorded the recent derisive article on Annapolis, which appeared so recently in a popular priced magazine.

Although still indefinite, there is a possibility that the next dinner will be held in company with the West Point Society.

A reunion is being arranged on a purely non-profit basis, in order to provide Midshipmen, out-of-town and local alumni with a place, convenient to Franklin Field, to meet their classmates and friends, immediately following the game at the Philadelphian Hotel.

"Vince ' McGuinness reviewed the prospects for the current football and gave an account of the boys from this area. Louis Drexler, Jr., the local recruiting officer, reviewed the recruiting situation in this distria.

O a o b e r 3rd, in spite of a number of our members being recalled to a a i v e duty, a good attendance turned out to listen to Mr. F. T. Letchfield, Vice President of the Wells Fargo Bank and Union Trust Company. T h e speaker addressed us, taking as his topic some observations of the industrial situation, and particularly based his observations on world preparedness. D u r i n g the first world war Mr. Letchfield was attached to the powder plant at N i t r o and he took us step by step through the various stages involved in the manufacture of smokeless powder. As corollaries he p i a u r e d not only the great amount of preparation and harmonious functioning which must pervade industry in such an event, but also emphasized the hospitalization and transporta-

tion facilities, chemical laboratories, community life, and many other necessary adjuncts which bring themselves about and become part of any preparedness endeavor. H e also took us through the important steps following the Armistice in the disassociation of the plant, and described in detail the necessary steps taken to dispose of the large quantities of ether, alcohol, railroad equipment, platinum, chemical laboratories and other supplies which were on hand and which were rendered no longer of particular use following the declaration of the Armistice. He ended his talk with an expression of his firm conviction that while the job was a big one he had complete confidence in the ability of labor and industry to follow through on any job which preparedness might impose.

ST. LOUIS, MO. A Navy Day program has been developed by the St. Louis Branch of the Alumni Association for which, SHIPMATE feels that too much praise cannot be given.

St. Louis alumni, in interest of furthering Navy Day, are putting on a big show centered around Professor William Chauvenet who is buried in Belfont cemetery at St. Louis with members of his family.

It was encouraging to the Secretary to find some of our members stepping up and paying some dues which a hard pressed treasury greeted with open arms.

Among those attending the luncheon were Captain Washburn, Captain D. C. Godwin, Lt. Comamnder Wakeman, and Lt. Shanahan who is on duty at the Bethlehem Steel Company; as well as Mr. Weill, an outstanding member of the business world of San Francisco, as is Mr. Motherwell, the President of the Wells Fargo Bank.

By reason of many factors which our membership felt might make a Founders' Day Dinner impraaical it was unanimously decided to hold a Founders' Day Luncheon at our usual place of meeting next Thursday, O a o b e r 10th, and we plan a good turn out and an interesting speaker. W e are sending invitations to the West Point Alumni to join us, and we trust that the Army will turn out in force.

Founders' Day, October 3rd, was observed by a luncheon at which forty-one were present, and among the guests were General Curry, Commanding Officer of Hamilton Field; General Mearns, U. S. Marine Corps, Retired, and several civilians, among them Doctor Hans Lisser and D o a o r Joseph McCool.

T h e gavel sounded at 12:45 and the speaker. Professor Kerner, Professor of Modern European History at the University of California, was introduced. For an hour thereafter we were privileged in listening to a thoroughly absorbing and instructive address on contemporary events in Europe and the Far East which have led up to the present state of world conditions. The Anti-Comintern Pact and its subsequent influence was subjected to a keen scrutiny, and the necessity of looking at the whole of a contemporary historical picture rather than a piece of one was emphasized as necessary for the appreciation of events which follow as was also the training which must be given in order to appreciate the whole p i a u r e and absorb its value at a time when it will be of profit to us. The Hepburn Report was referred to and a lesson drawn, and the recent Tri-Power Pact came in for the attention which it deserves.

One of our old members, Manby, who is now in Sacramento sent a telegram which was read, and it was a real treat to see Jimmie Hall back again looking as well as ever.

From all direaions the luncheon was a complete success, and the old spirit of Founder's Day was stronger than ever.

Our next luncheon will be the first Thursday of November, and at an appropriate time an announcement concerning this meeting will be made.

A plaque, a copy of one done by the eminent artist, H. K. Bush-Brown and which was erected in Mahan Hall on 31 July, 1916, was cast, with the assistance of midshipmen all from Missouri, in the foundry of the Department of Marine Engineering here in the Academy. It is cast in bronze and is two feet by three and a half feet.

Mr. J. Raymond Dyer, '25, is chairman of the committee to cooperate with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce in carrying out the Navy Day proclamation of the Governor of Missouri, Lloyd C. Stark, '08.

It was intended that the plaque would be placed on a granite slab as a grave marker to replace present simple head stone but due to limited space at cemetery and also as Chauvenet was second Chancellor of Washington University, the unveiling will be held under the library portico in the quadrangle of the University.
