For Valor It is only fitting that we pause a moment, reflecting upon the stoic courage of the ofiicers and men of the U.S.S. SQUALUS. In their hours of silent waiting and patient hope they exemplified the true spirit of the American Navy and have won for themselves, the undying respect of a great Nation.

In their unfailing faith that their comrades on the surface would succeed in a task which had never before been accomplished, these men paid homage to that less colorful branch of the service.

the scientific groups which brought forth the diving bell—the Momsen lung—and other safety devices, taking them from a fanciful idea into the laboratory and then, into test chambers, but finally into the cold green water that held the SQUALUS in its grasp.

Millions of words have been written telling of the submarine and its fateful dive of May 23, 1939, and in the pages of history more words shall be written.

whose life was swept into eternity by the flooding of a steel hull.

These men have joined the gallant company of men who go down to the Sea. in Ships—a company which knows onlypride in a task well done, for they continued to uphold the tradition that is the backbone of the Navy.

We salute our comrades who were the men of the SQUALUS and extend our deepest sympathy to their loved ones whose heritage is ours also—a splendid tradition. May we stand our last watch as courageously.

Public Relations and the Squalus Disaster "Submarine Down" was rumored but not confirmed. Shortly afterwards, Admiral W. D. Leahy, Chief of Naval Operations, received by telephone a prompt report from Rear Adm. Cyrus W. Cole that at 11:41 a. m.. May 23, the U. S. S. SQUALUS, off Portsmouth, New Hampshire, had shot a red smoke bomb but extent of damage and condition of crew were not known. "U. S. Submarine Down" was flashed around the world by cable and radio. Extras were on the street shortly after noon. Past disasters were recalled and the demand for news was nearly overwhelming. Small groups of ofiicers with serious faces met informally in the halls of the Navy Department to discuss the chances for the men and the probable cause of the disaster. Ex-submariners, deeply concerned, discussed the technical features of the new subs, and how the "lung" and the rescue chamber could be used. There were great hopes but all said 240 feet was very, very deep.

Admiral Leahy gave immediately the initial instructions for mobilization and expedition of all rescue facilities. Admiral Cole was put in charge of operations and proceeded at once to the scene.

The Navy Press gave to a waiting world all that was known at the time: "U. S. S. SQUALUS down about 5 miles south of White Island, Isle of Shoals, in about 240 feet of water. The submarine rescue vessel, U. S. S. FALCON and the U. S. S. SEMMES, with Captain Richard S. We requested that facts be published and that we would supply them no matter how tragic the truth. That there would be no covering up, no "pulling of punches" was fuUy understood. We requested that harrowing speculative stories, heard rending descriptions of possible total loss of crew be omitted until we could ascertain the extent of damage and condition of crew. Our faith in the American press and broadcasters was more than justified.

"Editor and Publisher," the outstanding trade journal of the newspaper world, commented in their weekly as follows: "Lieut. Comdr. J. J. Curley, Jr., U. S. N., Aide to the Commandant (Press Liaison officer) read messages from the scene of the disaster as soon as they arrived at Navy Yard headquarters. Lt. Comdr. J. B. Longstaff relieved Lt. Comdr. Curley after the rescue operations. Capt. W. F. Amsden, Captain of the Yard, and Capt. H. R. Greenlee, who lost his son-in-law. Ensign Joseph H. Paterson in the SQUALUS, rendered great aid to the newspapermen. These messages of the early progress of the rescue were dispatched from the scene by Rear Adm. Cyrus W. Cole, Commandant of the Yard. Every veteran reporter and photographer on hand found that one of the most outstanding features in covering the story was the generous cooperation and courtesy of naval officers. Technical engineers, submarine experts, and safety device engineers were ordered to make frequent visits to the press room and give all available information, other than that considered confidential by the Intelligence Service, to reporters in order that their stories would be accurate in every technical detail."

Press and wire rooms were established in the two largest rooms of the Administration building at Portsmouth. Navy carpenters constructed benches and tables for the press telegraphers. There was no restriction as to the number of {Continued on page 9)

The Alumni Luncheon Well,—the '39 Alumni Luncheon has come and gone and, at least from the viewpoint of those who did their best to make things the best ever, the party was a real success.

Four hundred and eighty-seven reservations were made as a result of letters requesting reservations — about 600 attended. The food didn't run out and the arrangements made to take care of those who came were ample.

We wish to thank those who sent in their reservations and, thus made possible the making of these arrangements, and, those officers on duty at the Naval Academy, who turned in such a splendid, cheerful, and efficient performance.

Many letters have been received congratulating those responsible for the luncheon—too many to publish—all are sincerely appreciated. It is only by knowing the wishes of the majority that pleasing arrangements can be made. We will welcome suggestions in the parties to come.

With the annual Army-Navy Track and Baseball contests to be held at the Naval Academy next May, undoubtedly a much larger crowd will attend. We wish to repeat, your suggestions are not only welcome but also assure a successful party.

The Gazette With the mailing of its May issue, the Philadelphia Branch GAZETTE joins the group of branch publications. Sent to the membership as well as the various secretaries of branches over the country, the aim of this new publication is to create a greater interest in the activities of the Naval Academy Alumni Association.

Many favorable comments have been received, and particular interest is being shown in the news of new arrivals at the Navy Yard. Through this, it is possible for our members to learn when, and if, any of their classmates are being attached to the Naval District.

As fast as circumstances permit, additional items will be added—items that will be of a definite help in aiding the secretary in charge of employment, as well as publicizing the efforts of the members now in business, a directory being contemplated.

In the event copies of the sheet are desired, twenty-five cents, in stamps, should be sent to R. Bruce Miller, Secretary, with the request that your name be put on the mailing list for one year, the cost covering simply expense involved.

The Class of 1943 At the time of going to press, new midshipmen are pouring into the Naval Academy each day. To date (June 20) some 200 have entered.

To date, we know little about the individuals who are making up the class of 1943. We have learned that the total number to be admitted by the time September rolls around, will be approximately 857.

We wish the class of 1943—each and every one of them, every happiness and success. As their class history unfolds, we are confident it will be worthy of the traditions of our Naval Academy and the Navy.

"Are Navy Men Different?"

Are men educated and trained at Annapolis different from those educated at other great schools of our Country.? Do they have something which the average American does not have? Or is this just a thought that exists in the minds of Navy men themselves? As a result of my observation of over 25 years in civilian life, I am inclined to believe that the Naval Academy trained man does have something which the average college man does not have. In substantiation of this impression, it is my belief that while there are exceptions, of course, to every rule, the average young red-blooded American who enters the Naval Academy at the impressionable age of 16 to 20 is inspired by an intangible something that comes to him when he puts on the uniform and lives day in and day out in the environment of the Navy.

It was NAVY SPIRIT speaking when John Paul Jones uttered those immortal words, "We have not yet begun to fight."

It was NAVY SPIRIT that prompted Dewey to lead his squadron through a mine infested channel in Manila Bay in carrying out his instructions to seek and destroy the enemy's fleet. Oh, yes, in the Navy the value of this unconquerable SPIRIT is well known because a ship is but a mass of metal, a dead thing, until she is manned. Then she becomes a living force, but only so valuable as a fighting unit as the SPIRIT of her officers and her crew.

been an outstanding credit to the Navy and to our great school. Back in the old days when there were two courses at the Academy, the engineers of the Naval Academy were looked upon as being among the best educated in our Country.

Large industrial plants were glad indeed to employ them whenever they were available for service in the Great Outside.

For a period of years there were comparatively few ex-Navy men who stepped out into civilian life, but during the past 15 or 16 years since the classes have been larger and at times the graduates have been more numerous than there were commissions available, the ranks of the Navy men in civilian life has been considerably increased. From time to time I have had an opportunity of being of some service to these younger men in helping them get started in civilian life, and the case records of a few of these will, I believe, substantiate the statement above.

For instance, some years ago a notice appeared in the newspapers that the Secretary of the Navy had decided to permit the midshipmen who were graduating and who desired to enter civilian life to resign upon graduation. A number of these men submitted their resignations and they had no diflSculty in obtaining positions in civilian life. I was informed at the time that every man who had resigned had offers of from ten to twelve jobs from which to make his selection.

These men naturally sought positions that would pay them a living wage and which offered an opportunity for advancement. One corporation which I know of hired four of these young men.

After a short course of training at their plant, these youngsters were scattered across the Country in the Sales Department of this corporation, there to take their place with other members of the sales force of this company, a number of whom were graduates of different universities and technical schools of the Country. It was not long until these youngsters began to make their impressions felt on the staff of their company.

centage of the business than all national competitors of his company combined.

These are but a few instances, and there are undoubtedly many others which show that the training and the education of the Naval Academy does inspire or instill into the right type of young American something which is most valuable for success either in the Service or in civilian life. I do not mean to imply that every Navy man is an outstanding success in civilian life, any more than every graduate of the Academy is an exceptionally fine officer in the Service. Opportunity often makes the man, and few men can ever be successful without first having the opportunity and secondly being employed in some line of work in which they have a very sincere interest. Even a good Navy man would find it diflScult to apply himself diligently enough to make a success of some line of work in which he was not particularly interested, bur I do believe that the average Navy man, if given an opportunity in any kind of work in which he can feel a keen interest can be depended upon to put forth a conscientious, intelligent and persistent effort which will bring success. In other words, he will make good and he will make good against even great obstacles which in many cases would break the average civilian.

To answer the question — Are Navy men different?—in my sincere opinion I believe they are. They have something, call it what you may, the average college graduate of other schools does not have.

In addition to their perseverance and their integrity, they have a highly developed sense of honor and of loyalty— attributes which are also valuable assets on the road to success. I think the average Navy man's sense of loyalty is so highly developed that sometimes it may even react against his own interest, but it has been ingrained into him at the Academy—it is part of his very being— and he can be depended upon to be loyal to those above him.

The record of the older generation oi Navy men now in civilian life contains many records of outstanding success, and I sincerely believe that the record of the future with more young Navy trained men who are now joining the ranks of those outside will be a great credit to the Naval Academy and to the Navy men themselves.

Random Observations in the South Sea Islands

First of all I want to confirm every detail in Captain Hellweg's article on Canton Island which appeared in a recent issue. Some of the statements undoubtedly appear improbable to a person who hasn't visited these islands but they are in all respects true.

We landed a shore party on Enderbury Island. All landings were made through the surf at considerable risk and, without the cheerful and efficient assistance of our Hawaiian colonists on the Island it is probable that much valuable material would have been lost.

This party remained on the island about a week during which time the ship was unable to send in fresh provisions due to existing surf conditions. The cook was a man of ideas, however, and had no intentions of allowing the party to suffer from lack of fresh food. There are thousands of sea birds on the island nesting. Very few of the birds make any attempt to build a nest but simply lay their eggs on the sand. Therefore, all stages of bird life from the freshly laid egg to the full grown bird are in constant evidence on the island. The cook collected a lot of tern eggs and served them scrambled and hard boiled in lobster salad. All members of the party except the officer in charge pronounced them quite palatable. He said that they were a little too dark in color to tempt his appetite.

In gathering these eggs the cook used the so-called "South Sea Island method" of collecting sea bird eggs. He went to a likely spot and drew a big circle in the sand and removed all eggs within this circle. The next morning he returned and collected all eggs within the circle with the definite assurance that he had freshly laid eggs.

The island has some fine lobsters. All that is necessary is to go out on the beach at night at low tide with a flashlight and pick them up from the coral crevices.

One morning the natives sent out seventy-seven live lobsters to the ship which was sufficient for the officers' messes and a lobster salad for the crew.

The shore party also had several adventures with huge sea turtles but never succeeded in capturing one of them.

The fishing is the finest I have found anywhere in the world. The only trouble is that the fish are too big and game for

the tackle we had aboard. Most of the gear we purchased in Norfolk has proven too light and weak for the type of fish encountered in these waters. Most of our spoons have been lost, hooks bent and lines broken.

Another menace to fishing is the shark. There are countless numbers of them in these waters. When a fish is hooked they gather in huge schools and follow the helpless fish to the boat. You usually haul in your line with either a fish head or shark on it. Part of the gear in all fishing boats are service automatics and machetes.

We have long since ceased trying to use a rod and reel to play a fish. The best method is to use a spoon and leader on a heavy hand line. Only 25 to 50 feet of line is put out and when we have a strike the fish is hauled aboard by man power. By this method we manage to break about 50-50 with the sharks on the fish we hook.

If the fish don't fancy the spoons and fail to strike it is only necessary to go

into shallow water and drop a baited hook over the side. The water is crystal clear and you can see hundreds of fish playing around your hook. Most of them are large red snappers but there are sufficient other varieties to vary your catch.

It is amusing to have your line over the side and see a small undesirable fish about to take your bait. To avoid wasting time pulling up a small one you simply jerk the bait away from him and wait for a larger fish. It was seldom that a fishing party returned aboard without enough fish to feed the entire crew.

There is no question but that these islands are a fisherman's paradise. It is recommended that you come out and pay them a visit.

U. S. S. Reina Mercedes

How To Know Stage Plays

The Reina Mercedes, a Spanish Cruiser, was built in Cartagena in 1887 and took her name from Queen Mercedes of Spain. In the Spanish American War she was the Station Ship at Santiago, Cuba. When Lieutenant Hobson took the Merrimac into the entrance of the harbor to block the channel, the Reina Mercedes gave him a broadside from her small guns and also fired two torpedoes, but without damage to the Americans.

On the surrender of Hobson to Admiral Cervera, he and his men were temporarily quartered aboard the Reina Mercedes.

During the subsequent bombardment of the Santiago forts on June 6, 1898, the Reina Mercedes was frequently struck and twice set on fire. After the battle of Santiago, July 3, 1898, the Spaniards attempted to use her to block the entrance of the harbor but she was sunk by the Massachusetts and the Texas before she succeeded in this attempt. With the fall of Santiago, the Reina Mercedes became a prize of the war. She was later raised and repaired, and on September 30,1912, she arrived at the Naval Academy to replace the Hartford as the Station Ship in Annapolis.

If all the characters are dressed in queer-looking costumes of an unknown period and speak their lines like a young politician making his first address, it's a classical play.

If it's filled with quotations you've heard before, it's probably Shakespeare.

If, after four acts and thirty-one scenes you haven't the slightest idea what it's all about, it's undoubtedly the masterpiece of a Russian playwright.

If the first scene is liberally sprinkled with amours and disparaging discussions of absent husbands, it's a French farce.

If the dialogue is made up chiefly of profanity and vile epithets, it's the work of a "realistic" writer.

If it bores you, it's "strong" drama with a "message."

If the chief male character wears cowhide boots with his dinner clothes, it's a drama of American finance.

If the comedians wink confidentially at the audience they're about to spring a prohibition joke.

If the trap-drummer whangs a gong two or three times as the curtain rises, it's positive proof you're going to witness a Chinese play.

Honolulu last year trying to convince those sophisticated fleet bluejackets that there is a GOLD STAR' and that she has U. S. S. as a handle. She's a 10,000-ton cargo and passenger ship which serves Guam on a circuit which includes Japan, the China Coast, and the Philippines. It's fun getting around and meeting up with people. In Manila I saw Frank (Swabo) Courtney, '18. Those who remember the debonair 'Swabo' in the leading role of the Masqueraders can retain this picture.

The same 'Swabo' with a trifle more dignity and poise as the head of a big insurance corporation and director in several business ventures in the Islands. In Shanghai we see the boys on the river boats who come down from time to time to get some cigarettes, a supply of antiquated movies and to find out what's going on in the world. I met Dan McGurl, 18, in the Imperial Hotel in Tokio, yesterday (April 23). He and the rest of the ASTORIA crowd were 'hanging on the ropes' as a result of a surplusage of Japanese hospitality.

"Next month (May) I'll be back in Guam for a few weeks lay-over and if I do not get a good-sized Marlin in addition to my usual quota of tuna, barracuda and wahoo, I'll trade in my fishing gear for a shot-gun and go out for pigeons (tame ones)."

Bill writes . . . "Largo is the largest oil refinery in the world with a record output of 306,000 barrels a day, feeding Hitler, John Bull and the West African coast. It is a bit like the Navy—the boys can't get married until after two years' service. Instead of thirty days leave a year, they get 14 days one year and 42 the following, in addition to travel time to and from New York. Any one of 'the gang' can take over engineering duties on 'M' day and the ships can keep up with the Fleet at 21 knots."

Georgia Tech seems to be one of the migratory spots for those of us who were not destined for naval careers, and who are known by the short and descriptive title of "myops."

Kenneth Forney, '38, entered the Guggenheim School of Aeronautics of Georgia Tech in 1936, graduated in 1938, and is now gunning for a M. S. in aeronautics.

A. N. Williams, '38, entered Tech in 1937 and graduated this June with a B. S. in aeronautics. He plans to make his permanent residence in Los Angeles County. His commission as Ensign, U. S. N. R., came through in November, 1938.

There's no dearth of Navy spirit down in Atlanta, and one of the big factors is the Naval R. O. T. C. unit at Tech.

We're proud to say that the Tech unit has taken top honors in gunnery over Harvard and Yale on their summer pracR. C (Doc) West, Lt., U. S. M. C, tice cruises.

This depftnment is as you know the New York State Police, and this particular troop has been famous for years as the 'Spotted Horse Troop' having one of the most famous trick riding teams in the world. Of course this may sound a bit funny for a navy man now to be caring for horses instead of boats but even at that we have quite a few former Navy men in this department, and every once in a while we get together and talk boats and such.

"The duties of this depanment are many and varied, from policing the highways and capturing criminals to caring for children whose parents we have arrested. We are on duty 24 hours a day and find that on the whole this profession has a lot more to it than the majority of people think. We are pensioned off after 25 years' service on half pay with allowances all of which amounts to about $1800 a year. At the present time I am detailed to the Bureau of Files and Records at Sidney, N. Y. "Will always be glad to see any of my classmates and Navy men when in our vicinity."

Public Relations and the Squalus Disaster (Continued from page 3) telephone and telegraph wires that the news men wanted to "cut in" the building as another article in "Editor and Publisher" said: ". . . the assistance given newspapermen in Portsmouth last week was unparalleled in their experience."

The Coast Guard, always on the job, rendered invaluable service. The cutter, THETIS, transported 70 newspapermen lo the scene of the disaster, later taking 50 more to the BROOKLYN where press headquarters at sea were established.

Three ship-to-shore radio channels were opened to the press. Many newspapermen came to the scene from distant points on a few minutes notice and Capt.

William W. Smith of the BROOKLYN made many reporters happy by opening the canteen to them for the purchase of razors, shirts, and other necessary gear.

The Navy Department Press Room was a scene of feverish activity. Three broadcasting companies set up equipment while newsreel cameramen were taking pictures of the broadcasting.

an experienced submariner, explained all details of rescue devices as well as handled spot news. Lieut. Gordon Beecher attended to the unprecedented demand for photographs of the submarine and the officers. Beecher also handled liaison with newsreel companies and the still picture organizations. Miss Helene Philibert, with the experience of twenty years in the Navy Press Room, brought to light the faded, tragic files of the S-4, the S-51, and other disasters for newspaper background. Public Relations swung into action as they are trained to do in an emergency, and under heavy pressure did their share to keep a waiting world informed of every development to rescue the entombed men.

There were sighs of relief when the rescue chamber made the first contact with the survivors. The manifestation of man's sympathy for man was clearly portrayed by the personal remarks of the press. Then the suspense of the delay with the last trip of survivors. Now the bravery and skill of the divers was stressed by the Press. The news men took the angle of giving emphasis to the years of scientific work by the Bureau of Construction and Repair and the submarine service to perfect the rescue chamber and run tests with the "lung."

All news was given out as soon as received. Hope was never given up for all men until it was definitely learned that the engine room and after torpedo compartment were flooded. Many disquieting rumors were dispelled. Public Relations Section ran night and day.

Admiral Cole issued a statement that told the story from the Public Relations point of view: "Realizing the tremendous interest of our people in their Navy and the general humanitarian temper of the nation, I have endeavored to keep the press informed of every event as it occurred. The press has cooperated magnificently and I know our people join with us in appreciation of their efforts."

Newspapermen scrupulously fulfilled the letter and spirit of article 1, of the Code of Ethics adopted by the American Newspaper Guild: "1. That the newspaperman's first duty is to give the public accurate and unbiased news reports, and that he be guided in his contact with the public by a decent respect for the rights of individuals and groups."

Of course nothing can assuage the grief of the families who lost their loved ones. The Navy will not soon forget those brave men who died in line of duty. Their death may well be the price of progress. The world salutes Lieut.

O. A. Naquin and the survivors. Naquin and Maness demonstrated how courage and discipline carry men through in the very face of death. The crew of the SQUALUS, alive and dead, upheld the the country. The men of the SQUALUS great traditions of our Navy. They made will not have died in vain if their great tradition.

This tragic disaster showed conclusively how proud the American people are of their Navy, its officers, men, and the scientific development in the rescue field. The press gave unstinted praise to those who by patient research and experimentation made the rescue apparatus possible. It is not too much to say that Admiral Cole, Captain Edwards, and the expert staff of commissioned and enlisted assistants who so expeditiously performed the rescue work have earned the gratitude of the nation.

Those June Week Army-Navy Gaines Well, as usual, the fur flew in the "June Week" Army-Navy battles and when all had been said and done. Navy had won Lacrosse—which put them on the top of the Intercollegiate heap with Maryland, and Golf. Army had the edge in Baseball, Track and Tennis.

The Lacrosse, Golf and Tennis contests took place at the Naval Academy, the others being played at West Point, all contests having taken place on Saturday, May 26th.

The Lacrosse game was a close, hardfought match, played on a hot, humid day. Close to 15,000 fans had gathered to watch the game in Thompson Stadium.

To many in the stands the game's chief color was that both the rival captains were playing in their home town. Captain Jimmy Keller, of Army, and Captain Nat James, of Navy.

Navy scored twice in the 3rd period to increase their lead to 5-2. Miller scored the first goal in this period when he dodged past Edwards and took a pass from Hendrix to score. Mason scored the last Navy goal on a fine pass from Miller with 1 minute and 2 seconds to go in that period.

Navy's three-goal edge seemed unsurmountable as the 4th period opened. But Army came out determined and opened up. Bollard scored the first Army goal in that period, 1 minute and 45 seconds after it opened. Navy was over-zealous and two Navy men were sent to the sidelines for slashing. Army was over-anxious with that advantage and their shots at the goal were wild.

Navy Golf Team Wins In the first Golf match ever held between Army and Navy, Navy won.

Jack Pye defeated Pete Clifford, Army's Captain, 3 and 2. In the same foursome, however. Bill Garnett, Army, defeated Harry Helfrich 1 up and the Army pair won the foursome best ball after two extra holes.

Bill Lamb, Navy, outdrove and outputted Army's Moore to win 2 and 1, while Navy's Captain, Larry Geis, nipped Howard Penny, 4 and 3. The Navy pair won the best ball, 3 and 1.

The best match of the day was that between Ben Mayo, Army, and Bob Startzell, which Army won 1 up at the 20th. The match was sewed up for Navy when Carry Baldwin won 7 and 6 from Joe Hardin, Army. The Navy pair won the best ball, 5 and 4.

Navy Racqueteers Lose In the Tennis matches. Army won the first five singles matches to gain an almost unbeatable lead. Navy then rallied but the lead was too much. The day's results were. Army 7, Navy 5. This meeting marked the fourth meeting between Army and Navy, each having won 2.

Army Nine Comes from Behind to Win Trailing with the score 1 to 0 in the 5th, Army's Baseball Team got going and won the 32nd clash between Army and Navy. The score in the series is now Army 19, Navy 13.

Tom Davis, Army's pitcher, was the star of the game. He allowed but 6 hits, struck out 5, and then helped to win his own game by getting a double and 2 singles in his 4 trips to the plate. He scored the first Army run in the 5 th and brought in another with his double in the 8th inning.

Both teams played errorless ball. Navy made two snappy double plays and Army one. Cooke and Niles each hit a twobagger for Navy, while Kasper and Davis, of Army, each did the same thing.

The first three innings were scoreless.

Then, in the fourth. Navy broke the ice and scored what turned out later to be their only run of the game. Davis walked

Mann, the only free transportation he allowed in the game. Mann stole second and came home on Niles' double to right field.

Army got going in their half of the 5 th when Davis singled. Kasper followed with a single and Polk sacrificed. Gilbert then singled to score both Davis and Kasper.

In rhe seventh, Kasper doubled and moved to third on Polk's sacrifice. He scored on Gilbert's single.

The final score of the game came in the 8th inning. Clement walked and went to third on Ahern's bunt. Davis brought him home with a double to centerfield.

Three Navy pitchers faced the Army.

Howard Schoenbaum, southpaw youngster, started for Navy and was relieved by Jim Madison in the first part of the 5th inning after allowing three Army hits, a walk and a sacrifice. In the 8th inning, Jerry Bruckel took over from Madison.

The outstanding play of the game was Clement's catch of McGuinness' hard drive in the 8th, which resulted in a double play.

Army Track Team Wins Navy ran into a hot Army Track team who had been smarting under two straight meetings and came out on the small end of an 81-45 score.

The record of meets in Track is now, Army 9—Navy 4.

Army's team, a well-balanced outfit, scored in every event and shut the Navy out in the broad jump and 220. Leon Chabot, Navy's sprinting ace, could not

repeat his winning performance in 100 in the longer sprint. Every event except the two-mile run was hotly contested all the way and many of the finishes were of the "photo" variety.

For a brief time, Navy was out in front with Chabot's win in the 100 and Captain Oldfield's first and Harby's third in the mile. Eaton won the 440 from Bunting, who had spent the last four days of the week in the hospital fighting an ankle infection. The race was a scorcher all the way with the Army man winning by a scant foot.

In the half mile de Latour, Army, stayed off the pace for the first threequarters of the race and then moved up with power to spare and won in the record time of 1:54.9, clipping better than two seconds from his previous record. Navy uncovered a new 880 man in this race in Bob Kirkpatrick, who took second place in 1:56.5.

Both hurdles were close. Hart was second by about a foot in the high hurdles, while Bunting came in second, inches behind Army's Gillis in the low hurdles.

In the field events, Swede Hansen gave the boys something to shoot at in his first heave in the discus throw. His heave was 147 feet 3M inches, ten feet better than his best previous mark and the best ever tossed by a Navy Varsity man.

The score in meets now is Army 9, Navy 4.

In the jayvee race, Syracuse, with a great spurt in the last half mile, overtook Washington to win by about a quarter of a length. California was about two lengths behind Washington with Navy, Cornell and Columbia trailing in that order.

In the freshman race in which Navy did not enter a crew, Washington won.

The Columbia crew staged a great rally but failed bv a quarter of a length to overtake Washington. Cornell, Syracuse, California and Wisconsin finished behind Columbia in that order.

Guam the Second Garden of Allah

The first month we were in Guam we had twenty-two earthquakes, about half of which were discernible. The other half although plainly felt did no damage.

It was however a fine initiation to Guam.

In a land where five inches of rain in fifteen hours does not even set a record, anything can happen and often does, but more often you sit around at home or at the club wishing you were somewhere else.

Not by any means that Guam doesn't have its advantages for it does. From a point of sheer beauty it has it all over Hawaii or any place that I have ever seen, but it takes heat and quite a bit of water in the form of rain to produce that beauty. Top price for rent is $30 a month and for that price the quarters are far superior to what could be found on the East Coast of the States. It takes about a month to get used to shaving in cold water and taking a shower in the same medium, but once broken in the world seems considerably brighter. Here and there a few houses can be found with a solar or an oil heater installed but they are exceptional.

The usual run of tropical fruits and vegetables grows with little difficulty although the roots in the ground, I strongly suspect, have some little competition with the hookworms (page Bill White in '26), roundworms, ringworms, threadworms and the other fifty-seven varieties which appear to thrive as readily as the fruits and vegetables. Strictly aside from all this Guam is in reality a fine place and the duty is quite fascinating. The collateral duties which are assigned practically every officer are what makes life interesting. All the following jobs are held by officers either as full time or collateral duties: Chief Justice, Associate Justice, Police Magistrate, Chief of Police, Commissioner of Customs, Treasurer of the Island, Cashier of the Bank, Immigration Inspector, Sanitation Officer, Highway Construction, Head of the Department of Education, etc.

Nowadays with some hundred odd miles of improved roads the automobile runs strong competition with the carabao and ox cart although the latter are still plentiful and in some parts of the Island necessary. The natives are fine people and this statement is borne out by the record the Chamorro mess attendants 14

are carving for themselves in the Fleet.

Incidentally the chief ambition of every native boy from the time he is old enough to think is to be a mess attendant in the Navy and many a heartbreak is suffered by those found physically disqualified.

Guam is a second Garden of Allah when it comes to flowers. Unfortunately I am not much of an authority on the subject but I do know a gardenia when I see and smell it and have learned to know the ylang-ylang, which, if they ever get around to making perfume, would cause the French to sit up and take notice. The Chamorro word for bougainvillea, when translated back into English amounts to "I ain't got no boy friend."

I have never been able to find out whether the girls use it to advantage or not.

The native weddings are quite an event, being preceded by an all night fandango, and if it is one of the neighbors who is getting married, it is just as well to become reconciled to a very small amount of sleep. The special three or four piece band has a special tune for such occasions which sounds very much as though it might have been cribbed from a German beer hall. The fandango culminates in the wedding ceremony at five a. m. after which the bride and groom parade all over town on foot looking somewhat sheepish and after ten o'clock in the morning somewhat wilted as well.

The local demon is one Tatamona to whom is attributed the fact that no matter how hot the night the native huts are tightly shuttered. To the best of my knowledge the only damage he does is to be accused occasionally of causing an unmarried girl to become pregnant. A former exec had a houseboy named Tony who had traveled about the world quite a bit in the capacity of houseboy to several officers. One afternoon when he was setting the table, the boy was questioned by the exec: "Tony, you have traveled around quite a bit—you don't believe in Tatamona, do you?" Tony laughed and said that he didn't and continued setting the table. After a minute he looked up and said, "But 1 have a friend who has seen him."

Insect life is both proliferous and ubiquitous if you get what I mean. Most annoying is the mosquito which flourishes twelve months out of twelve months. Guam eagles (flying cockroaches to Southerners) attain a size of a couple of inches and have an annoying habit of zooming into your face when walking in the dark. Flies, ants, flying ants and what not are all in evidence.

Feniji, or flying fox, (just plain, old large size bat) is quite a delicacy among the natives. We tried it shortly after we arrived. I ate mine with good cheer and a strong stomach, but my wife complained that it smelled like polecat and then that it also tasted like polecat and shortly afterwards got quite seasick. I never tasted polecat though so I wouldn't know. If you ever come to Guam, try a dish of it on your own hook. Five or six swigs of native distilled agi ten minutes before eating will guarantee your not tasting anything—six or seven swigs and I'll guarantee you'll feel nothing.

T h e selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, this triology should prove interesting to anyone who enjoys a well written story of the sea and while it is reminiscent of a day in which Yankee sailors daily fell victim to British "press gangs," the subjea is treated in a manner that is enlightening. British merchantmen were themselves victims of the practice, according to Mr. Forester.

Obviously the product of considerable research, the accounts of naval engagements with each moment of the fierce struggles are made more vivid through a clarity of language possessed by few modern writers: this log of Captain Horatio Hornblower will appeal to many.

In each of the separate tales — "Beat to Quarters"—"Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colors," the dauntless Captain proves himself not only an able officer, but also a rather consistent charmer of the fair sex.

It is p t e d i a e d Hollywood will be bidding for movie rights of the book and when the screen portrays this gallant captain it is to be hoped they do not mutilate a grand epic of the days when iron men sailed wooden ships.

A motion picture made from the triology will stand on a par with "Mutiny on the Bounty," and other such exciting tales of the sea.

Captain Hornblower is highly recommended to those who enjoy splendid reading.

AKRON, OHIO On May 26th, nineteen members of the Akron Branch and their guests met at City Hall to inaugurate their "Annual Sports R o u n d u p " and to tender a farewell party to Comdr. Walter E. (Heinie) Zimmerman, '22, who had been ordered to the U. S. S. ARKANSAS as Navigator.

The meeting was very successful. T h e purpose of the "Sports Roundup" is to help those boys who have decided to try for the Naval Academy. Coaches and interested boys were their guests.

DETROIT, MICH. There was held this date a luncheon and regularly scheduled meeting of the Detroit chapter of the Detroit Naval Academy Alumni Association in the wardroom of the Naval Armory. Dan C. Wilkerson, President, presided. There were present Messrs. Netting, Leverenz, Atkinson, Jacobi, Schulte, W u n c h , Beltz, and Wilkerson.

The committee, consisting of Jacobi as chairman and Atkinson and Leverenz as members, reported the progress made in drawing up a tentative constitution. T h e constitution as proposed followed very closely to that adopted by the national organization of the U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association, with the following outstanding changes: 1. T h e local organization will be known as the "Naval Academy Association of Michi-

gan," affiliated with the U. S. Naval Academy Alumni Association; 2. Full membership shall be extended to anybody who ever attended the U. S. Naval Academy at Annaoolis and left that institution under honorable circumstances; 3. T h e associate membership shall be extended to anyone other than former students of the Naval Academy who shows a positive active interest in the oromotion and welfare of the U. S. Naval Service.

The constitution and by-laws when drawn up will be submitted to the present members of the local association for comment and adoption.

It was agreed that our association make a proper and fitting testimonial towards those who lost their lives aboard the U. S. S. SQUALIS. Ralph Netting, as a committee of one, was appointed by the president to decide in what form or fashion we would express ourselves and to promulgate that expression.

It was decided that the president of the as.^ociation would in the near future appoint a "ways and means" committee to take charge of the plans and preparations for the Navy-Notre Dame game to be held in Cleveland, October 21.

The president advised us that in the near future Rip Miller, assistant football coach at the Naval Academy, would be in Detroit. As soon as he knows definitely what date, a special meeting will be called and the secretary will issue notices to all members of the association.

It was agreed that the regular meeting scheduled for the last Saturday of each month would be cancelled for the months of June, July and August. Thus, the next regular scheduled meeting will be September 2 3 , 1939.

NEW YORK, A. Y. Speaking before a large throng of 75 at the N e w York Branch Luncheon held at the Downtown Athletic Club on Tuesday, June 13th, Major Eliot, the distinguished speaker, predicted that the United States was to become the next or third world power of history, the other two having been the Roman Empire and the British Empire. In general he discussed a National Defense Policy for our country.

Major Eliot is probably better known through the media of three books: / / War Comes, of which he was co-author; Bombs Bursting in Air, and The Ramparts We Watch, both of which he wrote.

The Association is holding a buffet beer supper on the Roof Garden of the New York Athletic Club, Tuesday evening, June 27th, at 7:30 p. m.

They are also holding their Summer Outing for the golfers at the Ardsley Club, Ardsley-on-Hudson, Saturday, July 8th. At this outing there will be an 18-hole golf match with four prizes for the four best performances. Tennis courts and the swimming pool will also be available. T h e all-day affair is planned, beginning at 10 a. m. and winding up with a stag beefsteak and beer party. T h e price for the day is 15.00 per person and members can bring guests. Those who wish

to come for the supper only may do so at $2.00 per person.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. It was the experience of the members of the Philadelphia Branch to hear expressed, the opinions of a former officer of the Imperial Russian Navy regarding the American Navy.

The occasion: the last dinner of the 1939 season. T h e speaker: Lieut. Comdr. Dimitri Fedotcfl White, formerly of the Imperial Russian Naval Guards and one-time Naval Attache at the Russian Embassy in Washington.

If an American Naval officer were to consider as part of his routine, the drill for the suppression of mutiny, he would probably think someone had a distorted sense of humor.

The officer of the Russian Navy expected such a drill. It was Commander White's first drill when he was assigned to the fleet after graduating from the Russian "Annapolis" in 1910.

Infrequent shore leaves among the "enlisted" personnel were responsible for the development of many cases of neurosis, he said, and while there were not as many cases as some historians would have the world believe, the Russian officer was always on the alert for trouble.

The settlement of differences according to the code of the Marquis of Queensbury being unknown in the fleet that sailed out of the Baltic, the more headstrong seamen resorted to the Continental methods when they had an imagined grievanceâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they challenged the officer involved to a duel. As the officer was the more familiar with small arms, the challenger was usually at a disadvantage.

W i t h a twinkle in his eye. Commander W h i t e explained that for such differences to be settled on a "field of honor," were rare indeed. H e went on to explain that only a few of the Russian officers were mistreated by their men when the Russian Fleet mutinied. Any mistreatment of officers, he said, came as the result of direct orders from civil authorities.

It was brought out also, that in virtually all cases, news of the outbieak of the revolution came to the non-commissioned personnel before the news reached the officers, the information coming over the wireless which was handled by the men rather than the officers. In one case, a Russian warship on duty at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station when the revolt came was suddenly put under the command of an orderly.

Fleeing the revolutionists, Commander W h i t e served with Admiral Kolchak in the illfated ladivostok expedition and later, with the High Seas Fleet of Great Britain.

At the conclusion of his talk, he was crossquestioned by a number of the men, some seriously, others in a lighter vein. In reply, he spoke of his service under the then Captain Glennon, who he said, seemed to enjoy "pulling my leg, frequently."

As a contributor to the Naval Institute Proceedings, Commander White's name is known to many American Navy men. His works have been recently augmented by the publishing of his history as a Russian Officer in the book, "Survival."
