SHIPMATE has checked up and finds that in the present day set-up the Navy Athletic Association pays all the bills for athlaic coaches at the Naval Academy and pays ail expenses incidHital to the carrying on of all seventeen sports—intercollegiate and intramuraL Some alumni, too, have at times expressed the thought that Congressional appropriations help in some way to defray these expenses. But—regardless of how they think it was "When I was a midshipman" the Navy Athletic Association now foots all the bills in total!

THE ASSOCIATION Much has been said of the esprit de corps of the Navy.

For reasons not explained in simple terms, many are prone to wear this spirit as a cloak, shedding it when they remove their uniforms for the last time. Thus, it is left to a comparatively small group to keep alive the ideas and aims of a large alumni.

Such a condition were better overcome at once lest it spread and ultimately destroy a fine organization. To ask "Why.''" is as tho that one word also asked, "Who cares?"

Our Associate Editors The Trustees are pleased to announce the appointment of Victor F. (Vic) Blakeslee, '20; C. William (Bill) Duncan, '21; and Robert C. Conrad, '25, as Associate Editors of SHIPMATE. "Vic" Blakeslee was Captain of the Naval Academy Baseball Team in 1919.

In 1922 and 1923 he was Head Coach of Baseball at the Naval Academy. He retired in 1924.

The justification for solidarity is not a "bill of goods" that must be sold. Like the service the Naval Academy Alumni Association represents, the Association is an integral part of national defense. Just as it was, in the World War, necessary to have several men backing up one soldier in the line,—it is also true that the real future of the Navy depends to a great extent upon those of us who now call ourselves civilians.

But we are not civilians.

The day we stood before the flag, solemnly pledging our lives, if need be, to our country,—the day we first knew the true meaning of "Shipmate"—we forged an enduring bond. It is a brand, so to speak, upon our soul.

Not one which we need feel shame, but instead, one we may justly wear with honor.

The aims and purposes of our Association are clear.

At present, we are advancing toward the realization of a fine purpose.

Unified, we hold within our ranks, the power of accomplishment. Divided we shall never rise above mediocrity.

In ten years many advances have been gained. A few— not a chosen few—but a small sincere group made personal sacrifices that these gains be held. It is essential that others work tirelessly even though they do so without recognition.

The most gratifying reward has always, and ever shall be in the attainment of purpose.

Let us then strive for our common desire: That we may ever proudly carry on Navy traditions in whatever humble way we labor, still let us serve.

railroad equipment business and in 1927 joined the financial staff of Stone and Webster & Blodget. In 1932, he spent several months abroad and contributed to "First to go Back," a best selling book on Russia by his wife, Irina Skariatina.

Since that time they have spent considerable time in Europe and Asia. "Vic" is co-author with his wife of the book.

"New Worlds for Old." In 1935 they again toured around the world and upon returning, "Vic" became Editor and publisher of the Delaware County Post. At

present he is working on a novel of his own which has to do with Navy life. He has also done considerable lecturing on current conditions in Europe and Asia.

"Bill" Duncan has been a newspaperman eighteen years, spending the last fourteen on the Philadelphia Evening Ledger where he conducts a column of interviews on the editorial page. He has also been a public speaker for eight years, addressing nearly 500 groups in 15 states on "Famous People in the News."

"Bill" has interviewed many famous people who have visited Philadelphia in those years. His interviews, as written in the Ledger, have long been famous and have contributed much to the popularity of his paper.

"Bob" Conrad was appointed to the Naval Academy by the Secretary of the Navy. Was struck by "an academic Torpedo" in his youngster Semi-Anns. Then completed an Engineering course at Temple University.

"Bob" spent several years on the Editorial Staff of the Pittsburgh Gazette Times, "pounding a beat," in the toughest seaion of Pittsburgh. He left that paper to become Editor of the River News. Has also written for several trade journals but finally left newspaper work to enter sales engineering work where he now is. In this field, he collaborated in the design of some of the largest rolling mill drives used in Pittsburgh Steel Mills.

A writer for the last 14 years, his "Poems of a Lifetime" are scheduled for spring publication. Short stories from his typewriter have appeared in many magazines. His poems appeared in T H E

Notice A call for nominations for President, Vice President and the eleven Trustees of the Alumni Association is made in this issue of SHIPMATE in accordance with the By-Laws. These nominations will close on March 1, 1939, in order that an official ballot can be prepared and sent out to the membership.

The particular sections of the By-Laws covering the subject of nomination and election of officers and voting are given in the Trustees Notes in this issue. The Complete By-Laws can be found on pages 14 and 16 of the 1938 REGISTER OF GRADUATES. The attention of all members is invited particularly to Section 1 of Article VI, which requires that only the names of those members who have been proposed in writing by twenty-five or more members for a particular office will be submitted by the Board for balloting.

Bayly Bowl On Saturday, December 3, the "Bayly Bowl" was presented by Admiral A. J. Hepburn, '97, to the Regiment of Midshipmen. Admiral Wilson Brown, '02, the Superintendent, introduced Admiral Hepburn to the Regiment.

The "Bayly Bowl" is a silver punch bowl which was presented to the late Admiral Sir Lewis Bayly, Royal Navy, who was in command at Queenstown during the World War, by the officers of the United States Navy who served under his command. Those officers are organized in a group known as the "Queenstown Association." The original inscrip-. tion on the bowl is as follows: "From the Queenstown Association composed of officers of the United States Navy who served under his command during the World War to Admiral Sir Lewis Bayly, R.N., and honorary president of that Association and a master of his profession. Presented to him upon the occasion of the Association's dinner given in his honor in New "Vbrk City on February the nineteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty one as a testimonial of Loyalty and affection." The inscription of presentation to the Naval Academy reads as follows: "This cup is presented to the United States Naval Academy in memory of Admiral Sir Lewis Bayly, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., C.V.O., Royal Navy, Commander-inChief of the Western Approaches during the World War, who had under his command 10,000 officers and men of the United States Navy. In giving it into the care of the Naval Academy it is hoped that it will serve as an inspiration to all present and future midshipmen of the pull-together spirit which existed between the Royal Navy and the United States Navy at Queenstown where they served together for the common cause.

Vice Admiral Uriu

The life of the late Baron Uriu, Vice Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, class of '81, has been published in the form of a beautiful brochure. After graduation. Baron Uriu returned to Japan and became one of his country's greatest Naval Heroes. He was second in command to Admiral Togo in the decisive Battle of Tsu Shima Straits where the Russian Fleet was destroyed. In two other engagements with the Russian Navy, he was the victorious commander.

In recognition of his services, Sotokiaki Uriu was made a permanent Vice Admiral and Baron of the Empire. He died Nov. 11, 1937.

Throughout his life, he never forgot his midshipmen days and, as a Japanese Naval Officer, visited his Alma Mater at every opportunity, and on many occasions spoke publicly of the esteem he held for the Naval Academy. As a midshipman he made many friends; as an officer he was known as a gentleman and a true friend of the United States.

Copies of the biography are being sent to all ships of the Fleet and Shore Stations and to the Alumni Association.

Admiral Cluverius Briefly Recalls Career

In bringing forty eight years in the Navy to a close. Rear Admiral Wat T. Cluverius fulfills the ambitions of a father, an artillery officer in the Louisiana Tigers, who hoped his son would fight for the flag he himself fought against in the Civil War. The Admiral has done even better and is part of a big Navy family now. He married the daughter of Admiral William T. Sampson, commander of our North Atlantic forces in the SpanishAmerican war, and his two daughters married naval officers. The active career of Rear Admiral Cluverius ends with the last day of 1938.

We had lunch in October at his home in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The steward broke out a dish called tamale pie, a favorite dish of commanding officers in the North Sea when they were discussing mine laying operations for the next day. The Admiral and this interviewer had met on many occasions as he was very popular in Philadelphia and a speaker at many clubs.

He doesn't intend to be inactive after retirement.

"I am convinced the most important factor in our national future is today's youth. That is why I am going to continue my activities among young men, in Y.M.C.A., Sea Scout and college fraternity work," he said. He is a member of the National Committee of the Army and Navy Department of the

Y.M.C.A. and of the General Council of the Phi Delta Theta, national college fraternity, having joined when attending Tulane University prior to entering the Naval Academy.

Did he think the advances of the airplane in modern warfare had relegated the battleship to a secondary position?

"I do not. I believe the surface of the sea is still the spot where decisive battles are fought. The submarine beneath the sea and the air service overhead are vitally essential contributors to the success of the battle line, however. In so far as air effort is concerned I consider it a new and most important approach to warfare. Ever since wars have been fought the objeaive of the land forces has been the destruction of the enemy's land material and the objective of the fleet the destruction of the enemy's sea material. Now comes the air with a new approach toward both these objectives but does not furnish any new objective.

Admiral Dayton

Admiral James Henry Dayton, '66, who at the time of his death was the second oldest retired officer in the Navy, passed away November 15 th at South Bend, Indiana. He was in his 93rd year.

As commanding officer of the cruiser Detroit during the descent made by Admiral Sampson on San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 13, 1898, he participated in an engagement with the fortifications of that city. Laconic as are all official communications, none of the furore that swept the Atlantic Seaboard was apparent in Commander Dayton's report.

"At 5.15, the Iowa having commenced firing, opened fire with the port battery on the northern face at Morro; frequent pauses were made to allow the smoke (which was very dense) to clear. As the Iowa approached our quarter, cease firing was sounded, in order not to obscure her view. At this time guns were seen to be firing from the eastern forts, the shot dropping outside of us. When the Iowa was clear the firing was recommenced, a portion of it being directed at the eastern forts. This was continued until the fleet passed, cease firing being sounded whenever it was judged our smoke would interfere with the fire of other vessels. After the Terror passed, the ship was turned and followed her out.

By this time shot were dropping on all sides of us, but at long aim. The ship was not struck and no casualties occurred.

During the remainder of the engagement the ship remained out of range, in obedience to a signal not to follow the flagship.

"The behavior of everyone on board was excellent. The only fault I have is a tendency to fire more rapidly than the circumstances justified. From this cause and the ground swell a considerable amount of ammunition was wasted.

Glass will be seen in unusual adaptations to modern life and the increasingly important role of plastics will comprise a memorable exhibit. But the list is endless, for some 600 American business and industrial establishments will participate in this exposition area.

Cultural progress will be a feature of every national exhibit. It is noteworthy that nations and their governments turned voluntarily to this method of giving a correct impression of their national life, not in a spirit of rivalry or boastfulness but to demonstrate clearly that each had developed toward a better international goal. Every country, without exception, is making an energetic effort to attract peoples of other countries.

Architecture in the foreign zone will represent virtually a complete range from antiquity to ultra-modern. Egypt offers a temple of the Pharaohs, Rumania a lavish example of Byzantine, Italy combines Roman classic with modernism, Norway brings a replica of a 17th century royal residence, the largest wooden building in Scandinavia, Japan a structure typical of the Orient, Poland a combination of a medieval tower with a building of black glass. And so on through the list to the imposing modern pavilion of France and the equally massive Great Britain building, or the tropically-flavored Brazil pavilion.

One section, nevertheless, deserves particular mention. This is the Home Building Center, which includes "The Town of Tomorrow." The center is to occupy ten acres and cost approximately $1,500,000. The "Town," occupying a five acre segment designed for a population of 3,500 is to feature new architectural treatment and the practical employment of all types of modern housebuilding materials, methods and equipment, together with suggestions for home furnishing and decoration. A score or more of homes will be erected, full scale, and the visitor can obtain a clear idea of what to expect in construction and equipment, exclusive of furniture and decoration, for price ranges from $3,000 to $17,000 for a home. He took over the agency for the Travelers about four years ago and, since that time, knowing the requirements of the Commissioned Personnel, has worked out policies to meet those special requirements of the Service. Recently he again enlarged his office force, moved to more spacious quarters, and persuaded George P. Brewster, '16, to join his staff. Together, they handle all forms of insurance including Ship Service Store protection. Their slogan is "Insurance for Every Need."

"Charley" has recently established the first regular Travel Bureau in Annapolis.

He has agency arrangements with all the principal Steamship Companies, Airlines, American Express Company, Greyhound Bus Lines and many of the leading hotels. He is even sponsoring a conducted tour to take in the two Fairs which open next year (1939).

Earl, after his retirement in 1934, has devoted his time to painting and traveling in Europe and South America. His work is winning him wide-spread acclaim as a talented artist. He has traveled all through Mexico and the West, painting typical scenes and, of course, being a Naval Officer with many years at Sea, has painted many scenes of ships. In all his work, his interpretation of the subject has been particularly remarkable with his rich blending of color. With General Motors for 13 years, 10 of which were spent abroad, he was successively managing director of General Motors, Argentine; General Motors, Poland; General Motors G.m.b.H., Germany; and General Motors Peninsula at Barcelona, Spain. In January, 1936, he returned to the U. S. as Vice-President of the General Motors export division in charge of production and engineering with headquarters in Detroit.

B. M. Connell, '27, who retired in '32, is located in Auburn, Alabama, where he is Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at Alabama Polytechnic Institute. He takes his Seniors down to Pensacola on a week's inspection tour each March and has a grand reunion with his Navy friends.

Connell married Mary Ruth Murphey, of Chattanooga, Tenn., in June, 1937.

Those figures tabulated above indicate the superiority of Navy over Army on that eventful, frigid Saturday afternoon on November 26th, at the Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia. But, alas, he suddenly changed his course and was clear. On he raced, a brilliant 80 yard sprint to Navy's goal. He then kicked the placement and Army led, 7-0.

Twice Army rose in the shadows of their own goal to stop the savage Navy attack.

Twice Army's Sullivan booted the ball down the field. But the third time they could not deny those determined Navy Warriors. Cooke heaved another one of his beautiful passes to Powell and Pete was on Army's 2 yard line before he was run out of bounds. On the second play Cooke smashed through the left side of Army's line for the touchdown. Wood converted and the score was tied up at seven all.

As the third period opened. Navy began where they had left off and seemed headed for a touchdown. They roared down the field, their play truly brilliant.

Then a fumble on the 15 yard line! An Army recovery! "The entire complexion of the game changed so suddenly it kept the spectators gasping. Eight plays later and Wilson was over for another Army touchdown! Long's placement was again good and the score was Army 14, Navy 7.

But Navy was not defeated. That truly great team was determined. On the next kick-off Wood took the ball deep in his own end zone. Down the field he raced, Through that first pile-up, but he emerged headed for the Army goal, only Dodson kept him from scoring by spilling him on Navy's 40 yard line. It was a great thrill, one of the many the frozen crowd witnessed during^those sixty minutes of football.

Then on the next-to-last play of the game, Anderson's pass came within a few inches of landing in Whitehead's arms in the end zone. But it was not to be. It was Army's day!

This game concluded the playing days of a number of Navy's great warriors,— .men who will go down in the football annals of the Naval Academy as immortals.

Captain Powell, Navy's great end who is a great pass receiver, denied every Army thrust around his wing.

Cooke proved himself to be one of Navy's great backs. He is one of the greatest passers of the year and a fine field general. He leaves the Academy only after joining the ranks of Navy's great.

Jarvis and Hysong covered themselves with glory at their tackle posts, as did Wallace, at center, in their last game.

Baughman, Worden, Spector and Ghesquiere played their last game that day and richly deserve the plaudits of allhands for their splendid performances.

Navy's 1938 Football Team rightly deserves to be classed as one of their greatest. Their style of attack is different,—new, since last year,—something which requires practice, and consequently time, to smooth to perfection. Their attack is far more deceptive than last year. Thus, all can look for ever a better team next year when the next ArmyNavy game rolls around at Municipal Stadium on December 2nd, 1939.

Navy Football Captain for 1939 Midshipman Allen A. Bergner, '40, of Kankakee, Illinois, has been elected captain of next year's Navy football team. Bergner has been a regular on the Navy team for the past two years, playing left tackle.

In his Youngster year he played in all the games except the Army game as he had his ankle broken in the next to the last game. This past season he has played a consistently outstanding brand of football. He has been prominently mentioned as an All-American.

Bergner is the strongest man ever to enter the Academy and is an all-around athlete, having earned major awards in three sports last year. He boxed as a heavyweight last winter and last spring was a starting member of the varsity lacrosse squad, in addition to football.

This winter he plans on trying out for the Academy wrestling team.

An interesting point in connection with Bergner's election is the fact that Army's football captain-elect is also from Kankakee, Illinois. Stella and Bergner were teammates in high school, and next year they will oppose each other as captains in that great classic—the ArmyNavy game.

masters and the finest examples of seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth century painting both in the United States and in Europe. Europe now is being combed for the treasures in national and municipal museums, as well as in individual collections.

Music will find audiences in every corner of the Fair, through bands, orchestras, radio and loud speakers. But music will have its own home at the Fair. A Music Building, seating 2,500, is to be a center for the great international music festivals which are to be an outstanding feature of the exposition. The structure is 9

of latest design and equipped with the most modern acoustical and stage appliances. World-famous singers, instrumentalists and conductors will participate; compositions of every land and era will be heard. Folk festivals will have as important a place as the finest symphony orchestra.

New York State is erecting a Marine Amphitheatre at the north end of Meadow Lake which will be a permanent addition to the future park. The semicircular stadium seats 16,000 and will cost $1,700,000. The stage is set in the lake itself and is entirely surrounded by water. Instead of the customary curtain between aas, a screen of water will be shot up to conceal the stage.

Monster stage spectacles will be produced here five times daily by Billy Rose, New York impresario. Drama and comedy likewise will have their place at the Fair, with one project calling for a theater devoted entirely to Shakespeare.

An open-air plaza at the other end of the lake will be used for historical pageants and folk festivals.

Extending in a broad arc beyond the amphitheatre and along the shore of Meadow Lake is the 280-acre Amusement Zone where gaiety and novelty will be the keynote. Latest amusement devices and entertaiimient features will be legion here, an indication of this is found in the first amusement concession contract signed with the Fair. This calls for erection of a 250-foot parachute tower near the southern end of the area. Eleven gaily decorated parachutes will be operated from the top of the tower, enabling Fair visitors to experience all the thrills of "bailing out" without the usual hazards.

Vertical guide wires will prevent swaying and a metal ring will keep the chute open. Shock absorbers will all but eliminate the impact of landing.

with at least 50 incubator babies on display; a "Live Monsters" concession containing 160 kinds of reptiles, including ten giant pythons; an "Enchanted Forest" operated by Tony Sarg, and a "Laff Land," featuring mechanical animals, trick lighting, ghosts and illusions.

Ten first aid, fire and police stations are being erected on the grounds. Each will contain a waiting room, a consulting room, and a ward for men and one for women. Physicians and nurses will be on constant duty. Ten ambulances will be ready for call and two motorboat ambulances equipped with resuscitating aparatus will operate on the lakes and boat basin. Equipment of the latest description, including X-ray machines and a radiograph for recording the extent of internal injuries, is being installed.

Across Grand Central Parkway and linked to the main Fair grounds by two overpasses, the Bridge of Wheels and the Bridge of Wings, is the Transportation Zone, a vast area that is destined to attract a large share of the millions who will attend the Fair. Here will assemble those several modern means of locomotion—railroads, steamships, automobiles and airplanes.

The Railroad Building will be the largest structure at the Fair, an S-shaped building extending for a quarter of a mile. Among exhibits within will be the most complete miniature railroad ever constructed, operating for 30-minute periods at regular intervals. Tracks crossing every variety of terrain, over bridges and through tunnels, will carry miniature locomotives of different types, hauling freight and passenger trains on strict time schedules. Automatic switches and signals will control the trains. Cars will load and unload grain and coal, switch engines will shunt cars aside while tiny luxury limiteds roll through.

Whereas 800 persons can view each of these shows, more than 4,000 can witness an outdoor pageant of transportation outdoors. Every function of the railroad will be displayed on 3,600 feet of full scale tracks. {To be continued in February issue)

Yes, it's that Mohammedan again. Before you go any further I want to inform you that the editor asked for this so don't blame me for inflicting it on you.

"One of the most interesting points in a pilot's career is his first contact with the enemy. No matter how much information he may get from other pilots he still wonders just exactly what it will be like. Every new pilot has imagined himself in the midst of thrilling aerial battles with the enemy. In his mind's eye he has seen himself, time and again, getting on the tail of an enemy plane and sending him down in flames. Strangely enough, he is never the victim in any of these cranial combats.

"American pilots have an especially erroneous idea of actual conditions over the front lines. Hollywood aviation pictures; produced by people whose aviation experience has been acquired in air liners; and pulp magazine thrillers; written by non-flying authors; are largely responsible for this.

"My own first contact with enemy planes in Spain was a combination of tragedy and comedy. The manner in which our planes were conducted supplied the comedy and the outcome of the incident supplied the tragedy. As far as we were concerned the entire affair was a thorough fiasco.

"It occurred just a little over a week after I first set foot on the soil of Republican Spain; and about two weeks before I went to the Madrid Front in the Russion fighters. At the time I was stationed at the Manises Airdrome—just outside of Valencia. There were several Englishmen, an Irishman, and several other Americans on duty there besides myself.

We were supposed to be flying coast patrol—making three-hour flights up and down the coast every now and then.

"The planes we were using weren't anything to write home about. They were old 1921 model Breguet observation planes which had been converted into light bombers. We called them the "Galloping Breguets'; which describes their handling characteristics almost exactly—both on the ground and in the air. They each carried a pilot and a rear machine gunner, who also acted as

This course covers not only the radio science but also Sound. Following this curriculum are 6 Line officers and 1 Coastguard officer in their first year of instruction. In the second year are 6 Line officers and 2 Coastguard officers. In the third year, there are 5 officers at California and 2 at Harvard.

Communications is a two year curriculum, the objective being to educate competent supervisors. Both years are spent at the school, with a four week's practical course at the Navy Department between the first and second year and an equal amount of time spent in Sound at the Submarine school in New London at the end of the second year.

Ordnance Engineering is a three year curriculum and, after the first year, branches into one of the following ordnance specialties:—Aviation, Fire Control, Fuses, Explosives, Metallurgy, Mines and Torpedoes. There are 16 officers taking the first year of this curriculum, 16 taking the second, and 17 in their third year. The second year in Metallurgy is taken at Carnegie Institute of Technology and in Explosives at Michigan, and in Fire Control at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The second and third year in Torpedoes is taken at M. I. T. Those officers who take the straight ordnance engineering curriculum spend two 14

years at the P. G. School and all spend the third year in the field at such places as mine depots, gun, factory, chemical warfare school, etc.

Aeronautical Engineering (Power Plants) is a three year curriculum, with the first two years at the school. The third year is spent at M. I. T. Practical instruction is given at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia after both the first and second year. The other branch of this curriculum (Structures) is also a three year course with the third year at California Instimte of Technology. There are 7 Line officers and one Marine officer taking the first year's course and 7 Line officers taking the second. For the third year of this curriculum there are 4 at California Technology and 2 at M. I. T. The Aerological Engineering curriculum extends over a period of three years.

Two are spent at the School and the third at either M. I. T. or California Technology. Between the first and second year four weeks' practical instruction is given in the Bureau of Aeronautics while, between the second and third years, practical instruction is given at a Naval Air Station. There are six taking the first and four the second. In the third year there are 3 at California Technology and 2 at M. I. T. The Law curriculum extends over a period of three years,—all at George Washington University and in the Judge Advocate General's office in Washington.

There are 13 officers enrolled in this course, 3 of them being Marine officers.

The Naval Construction curriculum is given at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There are 23 officers enrolled, one being from the Coastguard.

The Civil Engineering curriculum which extends over a period of three years is given at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Fifteen officers are enrolled in this curriculum.

For Ensigns who wish to go into the Supply Corps, the Finance and Supply School is operated at the Navy Yard, Philadelphia, and is a one year course.

There are 41 officers now enrolled in this course of study.

The Business Administration curriculum extends over a period of two years.

The student officers are sent to either Babson Institute or to Harvard University. Three officers are now in their first year and two in their second year.

Another course available to officers of the Supply Corps is Textile Engineering which is given at Lowell Textile and is a two year course. Two officers are now enrolled.

A Transport Story Many humorous stories of the colored troops of the American Expeditionary Forces came from the Army. A Navy contribution to this group came from Admiral Douglas E. Dismukes. '"Suddenly, a terrific explosion shook the vessel. A German submarine has scored a hit. Daily 'abandon ship' practice became a stark reality. "General Quarters' was sounded, and in the breath taking moments that followed, scurrying feet brought the men into formation top side. ""Outwardly calm, the silent ranks awaited orders from the bridge. Captain Dismukes said: "You could have heard a pin drop when suddenly, one colored trooper stepped from the rank and said: "'Does anybody want to buy a gold watch and chain.''"

Anyway it was a very pleasant party and weather conditions in the Old Dutch Room at the La Salle Hotel were perfect for an Army-Navy Game. The local West Pointers graciously accepted our invitation to be present and at the kickoff both sides were receiving.

There were several speaacular completed forward passes at one or two tables, with such equipment as the management had provided, and some very good running, although the stone floor was rather slippery in spots. At the final whistle both sides were still receiving and continued to play for an extended period.

Everybody is trying to think of some way to get next fall's game signed up for Chicago.

The Treasurer of the local Naval Academy Association is ready to put its entire financial resources behind the thing, but was discouraged from taking action at this time upon being assured that a much larger guaranty than 5114.52 would be required.

It seems unfair to come in so far down the line with a reference to the dinner on November 18th at which Carl E. Dreutzer of the Class of 1929 spoke, for it was a very interesting, well attended meeting. Mr. Dreutzer spoke on "Alaska and My Eskimo Friends" and exhibited some excellent colored moving pictures of a recent journey into the Arctic.

The next meeting will be held during the Christmas holidays at a time and place to be announced later, at which, it is hoped, the Navy coaches, who will be in Chicago at that time, can be present.

Cord who from Grand Coulee, Washington, signified his coming to the broadcast by airplane if weather conditions permitted. Those who did not respond on the card which was provided for that purpose were not notified of the cancellation of our broadcast, but those who did signify their intentions of coming were all notified of the cancellation promptly.

The Army and Navy Club, however, expressed their willingness and their pleasure to afford the facilities of their broadcast to any of our group who would like to attend.

At our previous meeting Admiral Osterhaus presided in the absence of Commander Graham, and the petition for a change in some of the by-laws of the National Body which was forwarded to us from Southern California was endorsed with approximately 28 additional signatures.

Captain Ross Culp has recently been made a director of the Army and Navy Club and he is also chairman of our Entertainment Committee. He created a pool for the ArmyNavy Game, and, as always with everything he does, caused us to catch the spirit enthusiastically as the long line up of customers testified. Commander La Frenz suggested that each year the Navy and West Pointers get together on the occasion of the Army-Navy Game broadcast, and further suggested that alternately the Army and Navy a a as host. He pointed out the desirability of having our meeting next year held at Yerba Buena Island which is contiguous to our World's Fair and, as we all know, is also a Naval Station.

Captain Ogan sent word from his new post in Shanghai that he would like to be with us but that time and distance precluded.

William Poner, another of our members, signed off on account of being on an inspection trip. Three new members, Lt. Commanders James H. Taylor and F. K. Libenon, as well as Lloyd E. Clifford, were unanimously eleaed to membership.

Captain Gleason was not present due to his being in the East, but as chairman of our Employment Committee he left a number of typewritten forms which in the future will be filled out by applicants and the Committee will then have in possession all pertinent information which will enable them to more satisfaaorily place the petitioners.

From far away Hawaii we just learn that Ken Carney and his bride have arrived there safely. Ken is Manager of the Radio Department of Bowman Hoist MacFarlane Matson Ltd. He did a great job on this coast in radio and now is embarking on an equally active and successful career in the Islands. He recently completed a week's visit to the Island of Hawaii where he staged the N.B.C. broadcast from the volcano. The Association wishes Ken and his bride the fullest measure of all good things, and though Ken is in the Islands his name remains on our books as a constant, aaive, and loyal member. He further reports that among those with him in the Islands are Boynton, '08; Sam King, '10, who is the newly re-elected Delegate from the Islands; Frank Connell; Pete Harrison, '18; Addison Kirk, '21; and Jack Cooper, '23.

It is with regret that we have just learned that one of our staunch members, W. T. Boyd of Berkeley, passed away suddenly on the night of August 24th; and the Association has already forwarded to his widow the sympathy which each one of us feels for her in the hour of her loss as well as the loss which our Association has suffered.

The Los Angeles Association through their Secretary, V. Wood, forwarded a notice that their broadcast of the Army-Navy Game would be held in the ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel jointly with the West Pointers.

It also bore a footnote to remind any of out number going South to drop in as they would be most welcome.

Let's get together Monday and make the last meeting of 1938 a good one.

ST. LOUIS, MO. The St. Louis Chapter of the Alumni Association got together for the annual Army-Navy Game broadcast at the Naval Reserve Armory in St. Louis. Thirty-six officers and wives attended the meeting.

Lieutenant Beckman and Charles Ashley did a fine job of taking care of the solid and liquid refreshments, and the sting of defeat was thoroughly drowned.

TULSA, OKLA. The Naval Academy men of Tulsa had their annual dinner on NAVY DAY and had as their guests four visiting aviators from Pensacola: H. W. Taylor, '21; P. R. Coffin, '23; I. B. Monahan, '28 and P. K. Will, '31.

The Annual Army-Navy game listening-in conference was held and well attended BUT. . .

The Tulsa Branch is now holding informal luncheons at the Tulsa Hotel on the first Friday in each month.

WASHINGTON, D. C. The Washington Branch met at the ArmyNavy Club on Friday Evening, December 2nd.

Mr. "Buck" Oneal, Sports Editor of the WASHINGTON POST, was the Speaker and gave a highly interesting talk. Mr. Oneal has been a Spons Writer of note for many years.

He reviewed the recent football season in detail, commenting particularly on the NAVY Team. He gave his opinion that the NAVY Team was a fine one, particularly considering the age of the material. He further pointed out the great advantage the ARMY has over the NAVY in that respect with ARMY's material averaging 2 years older. He said that in his opinion that difference played a far greater part in the success of Navy Teams than the "Graduate system of Coaching" at the Naval Academy did.

Captain Chester Wells, President of the Washington Branch, could not attend the meeting and "Bill" Bullis, the affable and energetic Secretary, presided. Captain Wells was injured in an automobile accident the latter part of November and has been laid up.

He is up and around now and apparently feels no serious effects of the accident.

"Johnny" Johnson, the Vice President of the Branch, recently resigned his office.

"Johnny" has recently enrolled in the law course of George Washington University and, with his business and studies, could not attend the meetings regularly.
